THE HEADMASTER’S DESK

The rights and needs of women have been seriously neglected over the centuries. Society today is rightly focussing on redressing this injustice of the past. This emphasis however is creating a new imbalance. The boy is in danger of becoming somewhat of a threatened species. My experience in the co-ed system seems to be matched by other heads in both independent and state schools. In the co-ed school I ran for 11 years it was extremely rare for boys to feature prominently in the top 10 academic awards. It seems to be a common experience that only one or two boys are able to match the girls in this area. So much so that staff members in the co-ed environment are sometimes concerned about the diminishing self confidence and self image of boys. It does not make it any easier for boys when one considers that the curriculum in the western world is being rewritten by women to the advantage of the girl child. Christina Sommers presents some startling statistics on boys’ performance at co-ed schools in her book The War against Boys.

Boys, more than girls, say they are less committed to school.

Boys don’t read as many books as girls.

Boys’ writing skills are far below those of girls.

Boys don’t score as well as girls on tests of ability in art and music.

Boys are more likely to be suspended from school.

Boys are more likely to be held back in school and to drop out prematurely.

Boys are three times more likely than girls to be in special education programs.

Boys are four times more likely than girls to be diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).

Boys are more likely to be involved in crime, to drink alcohol, and to take drugs.

Boys are more successful than girls at committing suicide, even though more girls make the attempt.

90 percent of the approximately three million children taking Ritalin (a drug that treats ADHD) are boys.

This information emphasises the need for us to pay very careful attention to the needs of the boy child. It is essential that we prepare him for success in today’s world. I would like to take some time over the course of the next few weeks to highlight certain aspects which will perhaps help us as a school to emphasise a positive way in affirming and developing our boys.

RUGBY FRIDAY

RUGBY FRIDAY STARTS ON FRIDAY, 15 MARCH 2019

Pridwin Rugby 7s Festival, Friday 10 May 2019 from 14h00-18h00 and Saturday 11 May 2019 from 09h00 -14h00.

It is time to encourage rugby “Gees” or rugby spirit and will be continuing with “Rugby Fridays” leading up to the event. A reminder, boys may come to school dressed in black rugby shorts, a Pridwin or 7s rugby jersey, or the Pridwin maroon golf shirts for the younger boys. No blazers will be required for Chapel during “Rugby Fridays” and the boys may wear their black Pridwin fleece should they be cold. Fun prizes will be handed out at Chapel during this period.

Pridwin Rugby 7s jerseys are available at the school shop.

This year promises to be another dynamic event as we have had tremendous sponsorship interest and participation from our Pridwin Parent body allowing us to grow and enhance the 7s event. We are proud to have Air France on board as our major sponsor for the 3rd year in a row. They have generously sponsored a Prize of 2 air tickets to Europe. All you need to do to enter is come to the event and fill in your entry form at the gate on entrance. (T&C apply)

All Grade 0, 1 and 2 boys take part in this morning and you are invited to support them from the bleachers. Mothers’, fathers’, and siblings’ races are also on the programme, providing much excitement for the boys as they learn a little more from the example of parents who risk, strive and push themselves! Boys are to arrive at school in their sports clothes – black shorts, house t-shirt, takkies and hat. House t-shirts are plain shirts in the colour of the house. These can be purchased from the school shop. The boys will be given a lunch break from 11h25 to 11h55 and can partake in hot lunch at this time. We aim to be finished by 14h00.
