Kerrang Content Page Analysis

Layout

Kerrang’s content page follows the codes and convention of magazines. We can

see that the layout is very symmetrical and well organised. The content page is

clearly ladled on top right corner, which makes it clear for the reader. On the

opposite side we can see a photo of the previous magazine, which gives an insight

to the audience to read all the editions of Kerrang.

The articles of the magazine are presented in boxes; the main article of this

magazine is presented in a bigger box to show importance.

The layout of the magazine also allows the audience to get a quick over view of

the whole magazine, the labelling is clearly set out, on the right side column.

Subscribe

There is also a possibility to subscribe to the magazine on the content page, often

offer cheaper deals than on shops and follows the codes and conventions of

Kerrang.

Lure

A quote is displayed under the content sign; this attracts the reader’s attention

and also encourages them to read the rest of the article found in the magazine.

Billboard Content Page Analysis

Layout

The content page in this magazine is divided into 3 sections, the

content page, the chart lists, and a home front section. The sections

are spread with bright blue lines that link with the blue colour in the

billboard logo. The content section is clearly labelled and photos are

used to presents different articles in the magazine with a page

reference.

Editing

A photo has been edited in the content page; this attracts the reader’s

attention by showing what is featuring in the magazine. This particular

picture has been cropped, and past on the content page.

Home Front

The home front section is part of the brand identity of Billboard; it

shows us on the content page different musical events as well as

online links to music website. This is unique to Billboard as well as the

layout and the way it is presented.

NME Content Page Analysis

Layout

The layout of the magazine is very symmetrical and well organised. The articles are

found on the right side of the content page, and are divided into different

categories such as news, radar, reviews, live, and features. This layout is good

because it allows the reader to access to what they are looking for very easily. On

the opposite side of the page there is a band index, this is useful because it allows

the reader to find a band very easily. The dominant colours in this content page are

red and black which are typical to NME magazines. This layout and the colours used

take a big part in NME’s brand identity, as it creates an iconic content layout unique

to them.

Subscription

To follow the codes and conventions of magazines, NME offers a possibility to

subscribe to their magazine on the content page. This option is presented on the

top of a dark green rectangle which is an unusual colour for NME to use. The yellow

and green colour attracts the reader’s eye, and an image of the previous front cover

is available.

Article

The story presented on this content page gives an idea of what types of articles will

be found in the magazine. The picture used to illustrate the magazine also

represents NME’s brand identity.

Drummer Content Page Analysis

Layout

The layout of this content page is well organised, it is easy for a reader to find

what there are looking for. Photos are used with a page reference to introduce

articles to the audience. We can also see on the left column the articles featuring

the magazine, on this feature column we can see a brief sum up of the article.

Masthead and Titles

The masthead is presented again on the content page in very big letters. This

follows codes and convention of the drummer magazine; it immediately tells the

audience what magazine it is even if they never read it before, it also reinforces

the name of the magazine. A photo of a drum kit is also presented next to the

title to emphasis the name and identity of the magazine. The appearance of the

masthead also creates a link with the front cover and the content page.

The content page is also presented on the top left corner as well as the date, this

is presented over a red colour and shown as the dominant colour in this page and

links with the rest of the features and articles.

Article

The main article is presented in the middle of the page, it signifies the band is

important and is used as the main selling point of the magazine.

Q Content Page Analysis

Colours and editing

The colour red is used to show headings and to introduce different sections. Red

connotes importance; therefore it will attract the reader’s attention. The colour used as

the background colour has also been chosen from the main article’s picture, it is a

greyish colour that links with the colour of the sky in the picture. The “features” and the

“review” sections are presented over a white text box to make the writing stand out.

Article

The main article is presented with a big picture that takes up most of the content page.

This shows importance in the hierarchy of articles as it is given more space. The article

presents oasis a British rock band. The choice of the picture to promote British pop rock

is very important, because it shows a typical English landscape with English weather. This

presents Q magazine as patriotic, the readers will be able to tell it promotes British rock

just from looking at the picture.

Layout

The layout of the content page is organised, the content page is clearly ladled on the top

left corner. We can also see a vertical dark line on the left side; this makes the page look

more symmetrical and adds an extra design to make the colours link with each other.

The review section is separated from the features section; it also has a picture added to

it. The photo makes the section look more independent, it also shows importance as it is

the one of the only two pictures on the page.

MixMag Content Page Analysis

Layout

The content page mix mag magazine uses 3 pictures to promote their articles. It uses the

codes and conventions of magazines to attract readers. It is well organised and page

references are found on the pictures to show the readers what every article would

“look” like. The numbers on the pictures are also all written in the same format which is

cool and more relaxed that normal formal numbers. The content page references are

found on the left side of the page, this also follows codes and conventions of magazine

as it is the typical content page layout. The original features of this magazine are the big

pictures and numbers reference. The size of the reference and the pictures shows

importance as it is given more space. A picture of the front cover is shown under the

content page title; this reminds the audience what kind of magazine and what articles

are featuring.

Colours

The colours used in this content page are dark; the dominant colour is black, which

creates a contrast with the white content features section. The colour pink is also used

to presents different chapters of the magazine, which makes a change from the dark

colours

Pictures

The photos used to promote the articles are also used to show what kind of genre of

magazine is. The biggest photo shows an artist drinking beer; this creates a rebellious

attitude which many music magazines are trying to create.

Mojo Content Page Analysis

Colours

This content page is very colourful, this also determinates the genre of the

magazine. All the pictures used are very colour which attracts the reader’s eye,

but also creates a contrast with the reference section. Red headlines are used

over the white section to stand out and present different chapters, articles on

the other hand are in bold to make them stand out from the description.

However we can see a section called the moths contributor, in this case the

photos are in black and white, it creates a classier and , more official

presentation.

Layout

The name of the magazine is shown on the top right corner, it is written in a

very big font with nothing blocking it. This immediately tells use what

magazine we are reading. One of the unique features of this content page is

the “month’s contributors include” section, it is unique to Mojo magazine’s

codes and convention. Another unusual feature in this content page, is the

content section on the right side. In many content pages the reference section

is found on the left side. This changes creates a unique feature for Mojo

magazine.

Rolling Stones Content Page Analysis

Layout

In this content page we can see a yellow box on the top of the page. This is sued to

attract the readers eye, the box is labelled with “in this issue”. The content section

is found on the right and left side of the page. There are small descriptions of the

articles as well as a page reference. The supporting photos are found in the centre of

the page, and are overlapping each over to create a more lifelike and realistic effect.

Because the photos are colourful and centre framed they immediately attract

reader’s attention.

Colours/Editing

The design is also unique itself, we can observe on the pictures and the title of the

page circles. This creates a pop art/cartoon like effect; it also makes the page look

more retro. However the page itself is not very colourful, but the attention is

centred in the middle of the page where the pictures are.

Articles

The references are a shorted but well detailed version of the articles with page

reference. It is also well presented, the headings and page reference are written in

bold, and this makes it stand out from the rest of the page.

Rolling Stones Content Page Analysis

Layout

This content page has a very simple layout, we can see the featuring list on the right

side with a description of the articles followed by a page reference. The page

reference numbers are written in red which stands out from the simple white

background. The titles of the articles are written in bold to make them stand out,

from the descriptions and the white background. The heading is found on the top

right corner over a red box, we can see the name of the magazine “in the mix” which

reminds us of what magazine it is. There is nothing telling us this is then content

page apart from the “features” heading.

Colours

This content page is very simple and monotone, this makes everything in the content

page stand out. Red is also used to present the page references; it stands out and

attracts reader’s attention.

Photo

The photo of 50cent on the content page is the only one in the content page, it is

therefore important. The photo also stands out from the white background which

attracts the reader’s attention. The page reference under the photo is bigger than

other page references as it shows importance. It is the only picture in the whole

content page, it is therefore important, this shown by the size of the number

reference.

NME Content Page Analysis

Layout

NME follows the codes and conventions of magazines, the content page is well organised,

symmetrical and a main article is put forward. The heading immediately stands out from

the rest of the page; the use of the masthead in the content page also confirms what

magazine this is. A subscribe section is also available to promote the magazine and

introduce the readers with cheaper deals.

Articles

The content is found on the left side, but the main article is presented on the right with a

supporting picture. We tell this is the main article because it is the only one featuring a

picture and the font of the writing is bigger. This shows the hierarchy between different

articles. The content section is also divided into subsections “news, radar, live, and features”

Those sections are presented over a black box to make it stand out.

Colours

The heading in the content section are presented in white over a black box which makes it

stand out. This makes it easier for the reader to find what they are looking for. The colour

red is also used a lot in this page; this connotes importance and therefore attracts the

reader’s attention. A red sticker like shape is found on the photo presented; this attracts

attention and gives out information very well.
