Support
The design, specification, manufacture and installation of metal doorsets is a complex and technical process. Fitzpatrick can offer assistance to specifiers and architects to ensure that products meet expectations. Expert technical support and a full NBS-based specification facility is available, supported by a team of specification managers and our project management service provides a single point of contact at all stages.
The Fitzpatrick installation service includes on-site survey, measurement and installation. This helps to maintain quality from commissioning to manufacture and ensures that there are no issues with certification.
Environmental
Fitzpatrick has implemented a comprehensive environmental policy and is committed to a programme of continuous improvement implementing better working practices and has achieved ISO 14001 compliance with relevant environmental legislation as a minimum level of achievement.
Certification
All our doorsets and frames are fully certified to recognised performance standards. The company is accredited to BS EN ISO 9001: 2000 quality standard. All fire resisting doorsets are manufactured under the intensive CERTIFIRE independent product conformity scheme. Every fire resistant doorset carries a tamper evident and fully traceable label with clear, essential information. The CERTIFIRE scheme is recognised by regulatory authorities both in the UK and overseas and is designed to give confidence to specifiers, enforcement authorities, building owners and occupiers. When procuring metal frames for timber doors the certification of the complete doorset is attributed to the timber leaf manufacturer.

As part of Leaderflush Shapland, the UK’s leading performance doorset manufacturer, Fitzpatrick can draw on many years’ experience of legislative issues and the expertise of influential members of advisory committees and panels which have helped to inform major initiatives such as Approved Document M/BS8300 for accessibility and standard specifications, layouts and dimensions for school buildings as set out by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF).
Legislation and Building Regulations surrounding the specification of doorsets is wide and varied. Using our knowledge we have reviewed all relevant documentation to highlight any areas required for special consideration by specifiers or design teams, these are as follows:
• Effective Clear Widths (ECW)
• Minimum zones of visibility
• Ironmongery positions
• Opening forces
Additionally, we realise that design guidance and Building Regulations are continually under review and are subject to change. So subsequently we monitor these changes and any effect they may have on our working practices. The following information provides an overview of the key areas considered.

‘Clear opening width’ is measured up to any projecting door item including furniture, weatherboards, etc., as shown below. A space of at least 300mm is generally required next to the leading edge of the door to enable wheelchair users to reach and grip the handle, unless the door is power operated. Door opening furniture should be operable with one hand (e.g. lever action).
Effective clear widths Minimum zones of visibility
Glazed vision panels are often used within door leaves to let light into a room, for aesthetic reasons or for safety (i.e. allowing people using the door to be seen).
Vision panels should be towards the leading edge and with vertical dimensions including at least the minimum zones shown, either with or without a horizontal rail.
All entrance doors; doors across corridors and within lobbies; and where appropriate internal doors, require vision panels for door leaves and side panels wider than 450mm.

Position of ironmongery (Approved Document Part M + BS8300).
Opening forces
When using traditional closers, every effort is made to minimise the opening forces required on the doorset through the following:
• Engineered factory tolerances• Efficient adjustable door closers• Low friction hinges• Smoke seals
However, opening forces of 30N are difficult to achieve given the requirement for smoke and acoustic seals and air pressure differentials utilising traditional overhead closers. An alternative solution would be to utilise an electro hold-open device. Electro hold-open devices are powered by 24V DC power supplies and will hold the door open until the fire alarm is activated and the power to the closer is terminated.

Extended Fire Resistance Doorsets
The Firecel range of doorsets has been specifically designed to meet the requirement for prolonged fire resistance for periods of up to 240 minutes and to be as flexible as possible to meet all the specifier’s visual requirements. The inherent properties of Firecel steel doorsets eliminate the need for intumescent seals as the metal expands with heat to seal any gaps.
Performance
Fire resistance
Firecel doorsets have been successfully subjected to BS 476: Part 22: 1987 fire testing allowing Fitzpatrick to certificate 60, 90, 120 and 240 minute assemblies. Fire rated products are manufactured strictly in accordance with the CERTIFIRE scheme.
Certification
Firecel doors are certified under the CERTIFIRE voluntary certification scheme. CERTIFIRE is independent third party product certification which is designed to enable manufacturers to demonstrate a difference between their products and those satisfying only the minimum requirement.
The scheme is designed to give confidence to specifiers, enforcement authorities and building owners and occupiers. CERTIFIRE is recognised by regulatory authorities both in the UK and overseas.
Testing
Fitzpatrick sponsors independent testing and assessment for integrity as required by British Standard 476 part 22.

Soundcel™
the control of sound
P. 11
Acoustic Doorsets
The Soundcel range of steel doorsets has been developed using mineral wool or honeycomb cores to meet specific acoustic performance requirements. The range has been independently third party tested ensuring the performance characteristics of the doorset.
Performance
The effects of acoustic privacy and nuisance noise are subjective and influenced by background noise, distance from sound source and general context, amongst others. When considering walls containing doors, it is the combined performance of both elements that is relevant, clearly the proportion of door to wall area is particularly important.
Fitzpatrick offer a total engineered metal doorset solution that provides very effective sound reduction for areas with high noise levels, such as plant or generator rooms. With complete engineered doorsets, all components are factory-assembled to the closest tolerances and thoroughly tested to ensure that required performance levels are successfully achieved. Preparation, installation and best practice on-site are also crucial elements in the process to stop sound leakage.
Acoustics is a complex field and a wide variety of performance levels sometimes referred to including NR or NC levels and dBA, DwdB and STC. Acoustic performance for doorsets should always refer to RwdB. It should be remembered that performance values quoted for products and ranges are based on laboratory test results; on-site testing will generally produce lower results.

Securicel®
security doorsets
Security Doorsets
Fitzpatrick Securicel high security steel doorsets offer a range of protection and performance characteristics. The Securicel range includes a SBD (Secured by Design) doorset for residential applications. Fire escape options are available if required and special designs can be manufactured to meet individual requirements.
Security doorsets must offer resistance to threats from petty burglars using small tools up to attempted forced entry with high powered machinery. Fitzpatrick Securicel doorsets are available in four distinct levels of security protection:
Fitzpatrick Level 1
Resistance to attack with small tools, screwdriver, small lever or wrench, pliers, spanners, etc or bodily force. These are usually relatively noiseless attempts to gain entry by opportunists.
Fitzpatrick Level 2
Resistance to attack with heavier hand tools, pipe wrench, claw hammer or hand drill where the burglar is more determined and is not afraid of creating some noise.
Fitzpatrick Level 3
Resistance to attack with more substantial and heavier tools such as a crowbar, a small cordless power drill, an axe or blowtorch. At this level the threat is a determined criminal who is not too concerned about the noise they make in their attempt to gain entry.
Fitzpatrick Level 4
At this level the threat is a determined professional who uses such tools such as heavy sledgehammers, power drilling, cutting and grinding equipment.
Note
The above levels of performance are based on in-house testing. Levels 3 and 4 have a reinforced leaf design to meet the perceived level of attack. For security reasons full details will not be published.

Framecel™
introducing our frame only offer
Framecel metal doorframes are manufactured to BS1245 and can be manufactured in stainless steel or mild steel. They are available with either a primed or powder coated finish to any BS or RAL colour and can be manufactured in many configurations or sizes.
Fixing
A full range of fixing options are available. Doorframes are prepared to receive Fitzpatrick’s standard hinges although a range of alternative hinges is available to suit special applications.
Frames can be manufactured to accommodate special ironmongery and preparations such as overhead closers, security bolts, barrel bolts, panic furniture, lock strikes, flush bolts and indicator bolts.
For ease of transport and handling, frames are normally supplied in ‘knock-down’ form for erection on site. This is particularly beneficial for large projects and for economic delivery worldwide.
The frames will be prepared for hinges, closers and other door furniture as specified and will come with the appropriate fixing lugs for the application.
The Framecel product is compatible with metal and timber doors and complement the Leaderflush Shapland Designer and Plasform range of doors. Certification is based on the evidence from the door leaf manufacturer.

construction of door leaves
technical information
Leaf construction
A honeycomb core construction can provide fire protection for up to 240 minutes and a mineral wool core can give up to 120 minutes protection yet with higher acoustic performance (up to 35 RwdB sound reduction). Core construction is determined by performance of doorset specified.
Mineral core
The void between the two skins is filled with mineral wool which has an open fibrous structure making it ideal for absorbing and regulating noise as well as having fire resistant qualities built-in. Mineral wool products reduce ear-deafening noise from machines or the activities of people, and provide ambient situations that allow normal conversation. Reinforcing pads are fitted within the leaf to suit hardware options.
Honeycomb core
The void between the two skins is filled with a bonded honeycomb core material. Honeycomb core materials are used because of their fire resistance and energy absorption properties and their ability to sustain compressive loading while being crushed. Reinforcing pads are fitted within the leaf to suit hardware options.
astragalAn Astragal is used on all double leaf, one and a half leaf doorsets and is standard on all single security doorsets where the lip goes over the frame. It can also be used on single doors but not on double action (swing) doorsets.

seal arrangements
Doorsets are supplied with all the necessary seals fitted to either door or frame, sometimes including astragals for pairs. With acoustic doors the gap between door and threshold on the floor must also be sealed with drop seals and/or thresholds, depending on performance requirements and floor finish. Special care is needed to check that doors close correctly all around, noting a slight resistance when the door closes against its seals.
• A level floor is essential to threshold sealing
• Seal under the threshold and bottom of jambs, as well as back of frame
• Plumb square and level to ensure that seals contact fully all around
• Seals must not be cut for ironmongery
• Never paint seals or close a freshly painted door onto them
• Avoid damaging all seals, particularly on the bottom edge
Best practice on site is critical, sound is like water in that all gaps must be properly sealed to stop leakage.

vision panels
Glazed vision panels are often used to let light into a room or for safety (i.e. allowing people using the door to be seen). The most popular vision panel styles are shown below, although other designs can be accommodated. All aperture dimensions shown are clear vision sizes. A selection of glazing systems is available to suit styles as shown.

Fitzpatrick in practice
over 60 years experience in the manufacture of performance doorsets
New Wembley Stadium, London
At almost four times the height of the original and covering twice the area, the new Wembley Stadium is the largest covered football stadium in the world.
Fitzpatrick supplied the joinery sub-contractor on this prestigious project, with 2,500 steel door frames and 600 internal and external performance metal doorsets for function rooms, player and officials areas, and the Royal Suite.
Satisfying strict security and fire criteria, the doorsets were delivered on time within an 18 month programme agreed with the main contractor. Fitzpatrick’s flexibility on door frame design was put into practice with the wide variety of configurations and sizes supplied.
projects of differing size and complexity have benefited from Fitzpatrick doorset expertise

St David’s 2, Cardiff
The St David’s 2 development will bring new stores, cafés, bars, restaurants and luxury apartments to the heart of Cardiff, as well as enhanced public areas and facilities, a new central library, and a modernisation of the existing St David’s Shopping Centre.
Fitzpatrick is supplying a package of 900 steel door frames and 300 security, fire rated and high rated acoustic external doorsets to Leaderflush Shapland for the development. This is part of a supply chain through the joinery sub-contractor.
Door frames are being designed to suit both the specifics of the openings and to meet the certification requirements of Leaderflush Shapland’s timber door leaves.
Welsh Assembly Building, Cardiff
A package of 40 special steel security, fire rated and access doorsets were supplied and installed for the joinery sub-contractor on the Welsh Assembly Building. Because of the building’s design and layout, Fitzpatrick designed the doors with specific features that allowed easy installation and movement in areas with limited access and headroom.

Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth
A major PFI redevelopment of the existing Queen Alexandra Hospital is currently being undertaken on behalf of the Portsmouth NHS Trust, with Fitzpatrick supplying over four thousand steel doorsets to all internal occupational areas of the new and refurbishment phases of the building.
All work is being sub-contracted by Fitzpatrick on a supply and installation basis, managed by Fitzpatrick’s site and head office based surveying, fitting and supervisory team.
A new frame configuration has been designed to suit specific structural arrangements; one hundred doorsets supplied and installed on the new Rehabilitation building; three hundred more for the new Pathology building; and around two thousand nine hundred have been completed so far for the new main hospital. A further one thousand similarly specified doorsets are being supplied and installed, through to 2010, on the refurbished Retained Estate part of the project.
New Schools in Peterborough and Lewisham
Fitzpatrick supplied and installed 250 external security steel doorsets for three school building projects on the Voyager programme in Peterborough, and three in the London Borough of Lewisham. The projects involved a mix of new build and refurbishment works and all doorsets were supplied and installed to tight contract programmes, with the process involving a degree of ‘to-contract’ design work, over a 24 month contract period.
Westfield Retail Development, White City, London
The £1.6bn, 1.6 million sq ft Westfield Retail Development in Shepherd’s Bush is now the biggest shopping centre in London and the third largest in the UK.
Fitzpatrick supplied a package of 1,500 steel security and/or fire rated internal back-of-house and external doorsets to the joinery sub-contractor for this project. The majority of the doorsets were provided to a short timeframe, accommodating several retail unit opening deadlines.
Flexiblity on doorframe design was critical, with all products supplied specific to individual opening dimensions and contract-specific fire rated doorsets. These were subject to independent third party fire testing to prove suitability and certification.

Innovations from Leaderflush Shapland
Hygienilac® anti-microbial finish
Leaderflush Shapland uses Hygienilac® as a standard finish for all its veneered doorsets. This revolutionary, anti-microbial wood lacquer kills most species of bacteria including C.diff, MRSA, Salmonella and E.coli making it an excellent choice for environments such as education, healthcare and care homes where there is a real need for protection from infections and cross contamination.
Hygieniform anti-microbial PVC facing option
Hygieniform PVC incorporates Hygienilac® through its complete thickness, so that even if the surface is scratched, it will still provide protection against harmful bacteria as well as being suitable for ‘Severe Duty’ applications.
Sentinel finger protection
According to ROSPA, 30,000 children trap and injure their fingers in doors every year. The Sentinel doorset incorporates a discreet and aesthetically pleasing hand and finger protection solution that allows specifiers and architects to achieve outstanding performance, without compromising design or architectural integrity.
Multisecure
Multisecure specialises in the manufacture of entry doorsets, communal entrances and screens for social housing projects including Blockade ‘Secured by Design’ accredited doorsets, or applications requiring extremely high levels of security.
