Course Level 2 Media Studies – 12MES

Course Entry (Prerequisites) Year 10 English Achievement Standard credits – includes History or Geography Achievement Standards.

Course Overview This course is ideally suited to students who are interested in the arts, Film/Television Industry, communication, and society. The course looks at the ways in which the media are influential in society, and how students can contribute positively as both consumers and creators of media products. This course works with students’ strengths in writing, design, research, and uses their existing experiences with the media. There is a strong focus on filmmaking, as students will write a script, shoot, and produce a film. This will involve creative and critical thinking, as well as the ability to problem solve. Students will have a go at editing in Adobe Premiere Pro, so some familiarity with Adobe suites would be beneficial but not a requirement to take this course. Students will learn that in all walks of life, some knowledge of how to deal with the media is essential.

Course Overview This English course is an in-depth study of visual language. Most of the credits gained will be through internal assessments that allow the students to explore the world of film. The main focus of this course is for students to gain all their University Entrance Reading and Writing credits through internal assessment. Student will also be entered into one External Achievement Standard based on their film study.

Course Entry (Prerequisites) Pre –Intermediate level English Language Common European Framework level A2 The Oxford Placement Test, along with other written and oral testing during orientation, will determine the level at which the student will be placed for study, and how many periods of EL the student will require per day.

Course Overview This course is for people for whom English an additional language. Course work includes reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar and vocabulary in English. Particular emphasis is placed on reading and writing, which are major components of mainstream subjects and future tertiary study. English Language has Unit Standards, which are endorsed as Achieved or Not Achieved.

At least 12 credits in NCEA Level One Mathematics, with at least 4 being from externally assessed standards. The Algebra Achievement Standards 92147 will be required.

Course Overview This course continues to develop the mathematical skills and understanding from the previous year's work. This course includes new concepts such as Probability Distributions. This course will continue to develop your problem solving and logical thinking skills, which are needed to be able to solve unfamiliar practical and mathematical problems. This course covers all the strands of Mathematics Number, Measurement, Geometry, Algebra, Statistics and Mathematical Processes. The course will be accessed by internal assessment. Entry into this course is at the discretion of the Head of Mathematics.

Course Overview We live in a world of amazing beauty, infinite complexity and rigorous challenge. Geography opens the door to this dynamic world.

This course is ideally suited to students with a strong interest in environmental issues and geological science. It explores:

the pattern of crime in Chicago and how this is linked to the economy

the natural features of the Amazon basin which are threatened by oil companies

the impacts of coastal erosion around New Zealand

the current resource consent issues for opencast and underground mining in Waihi

designing and carrying out group research projects

Geography compliments other curriculum subject areas such as; Economics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, History, Tourism

Course Overview The main reason to study hospitality, travel and tourism is to work in this significant industry. Hotels, airlines, destinations, attractions, transportation, cruises, events, activity providers, shopping centres, tourist services, travel agents, tour operators and many others together form a huge industry. It is in constant growth and needs more and more skilled workers and innovators every year. Tourism is such a large employer locally and nationally this course is a great introduction to the industry.

Course Overview The Level 2 Chemistry course introduces students to the wider world of Chemistry. It explores the basic fundamentals of Chemistry and how chemistry it is used in society to meet needs, resolve issues and develop new technologies. It is a full academic programme comprising a combination of internal and external Achievement Standards. The internal component is practical orientated with assessments that reflect this. Level 2 Chemistry provides the basis for study at Level 3 and aims to prepare students considering careers in areas including Health Sciences, Engineering and Science.

Course Overview The focus in this course is on practical activities as well as research and the application of Science concepts across various Science strands. Course Overview In Level 2 Applied Outdoor Education you will be working towards Level 2 and Level 3 NZQA unit and Achievement Standard credits. This will count towards a National Certificate in Outdoor Recreation (Leadership) (Level 3) as well as the National Certificate of Achievement in Education (NCEA). This course is designed to give students access and skills in various recreational settings. It will benefit students who wish to go into the adventure tourism industry, the services and those who wish to learn about themselves when faced with a challenge.

Course Level 2 Childcare – 12CHC Course Entry (Prerequisites) Nil

Course Overview This course has a strong emphasis on developing knowledge and skills about positive parenting, child development, child-rearing practices and communication skills. Students have the opportunity to explore a variety of careers such as teaching, early childhood education, midwifery, nanny work, social work and nursing. During this course students are assessed by completing unit standards at level two from the following possibilities. A number of the units are provided and moderated by the Royal NZ Plunket Society. The Plunket Unit Standards contribute towards the National Certificate in Early Childhood Education and Care Level 3.

Course Overview The idea behind this course is to target students who have an interest in being active and getting fit. For some it might be because they have a strong interest in the Sport & Fitness industry, Military or other Public Services. For others this may be the catalyst for them to start thinking about their own physical wellbeing, getting more active and reaping the benefits. It is also an avenue for students who play sport and want to learn more about getting fit for their sport and becoming a more competitive player on the sports field. Students will be encouraged to develop knowledge and skills that will lead them to be more resourceful, self-reliant and responsible. This is a practical based course with opportunities to develop relationships with the Rotorua Police, Rotorua Fire Services, and local gym businesses.

Course Level 2 Music – 12MUS Course Entry (Prerequisites) The prerequisite for 12 Music is at least achieving the performance

Course Level 2 Photography – 12PHO Course Entry

Course Overview The work developed for assessment for both internal and external assessments will be project based investigations around themes. These themes will centre on various photographic conventions and use a variety of interesting established artist models to help guide students to a successful body of practical work in each unit. In this course students will learn to use a Digital camera with manual controls. The course is taught in a Fine Arts context using professional artist models as a method of study and a means of developing a body of original works in series towards assessment. Students will also be taught Digital Photography and Photoshop manipulation, for beginners or advanced students. Course Overview If you are considering studying to work in the Film and Television Industry, Animation, 3-D modelling, Architecture, or Graphic/Web Design, you will benefit from this course. Course Level 2 Visual Arts Painting – 12ART Course Entry (Prerequisites) Either Level 1 Visual Arts, Photography, Sculpture or Graphic Novel are

required, Digital Visual Communication or Digital Design are helpful.

Course Overview This course is designed to guide students to realising their creative potential and confidence through Fine Arts practices, using a variety of painting, drawing and image making processes and materials. Emphasis will be on exploration and experimentation, and based on the study of professional contemporary artists. The assessment units will be fun projects that are easy for students to engage in, based around the students’ choice of themes and to suit their style of working. A range of painting styles will be explored including Expressionism and Realism, Graphic Art and Abstraction. Drawing tuition is provided throughout the course. A field trip will start the year off to gather visual information, based on the students themes and choices. Students have the opportunity to include Printmaking or Art History standards during the year if appropriate.

Course Overview In NCEA Level 2 Spanish, students will learn language and skills required to communicate with Spanish-speaking people, expressing their own ideas and opinions on topics of immediate interest to them, and the world around them, using a range of tenses and language features.

From running cleaning and/or construction crews, childcare, call centres and working in the travel industry to international trade, diplomacy, engineering and law, many career pathways are enhanced due to being able to speak a second language. In today’s global village with its cross-national workforce, never has being bilingual been a more valuable asset. Being able to understand and to speak Spanish also enhances international travel and study experiences.

Course Overview This course is for those students who wish to extend and develop their skills in Whakarongo, Pānui, Kōrero and Tuhituhi.

This course will cover topics aligned to the external NCEA Level 2 Te Reo Māori . The topics may include Te Marae – Tikanga, Kawa, Hui - Pohiri, Tangihanga, Sports and Recreation today, traditional Māori games and Pastimes, Ko ngā tūmanako, Ko ngā Kōrero Pūrākau me ngā Pakiwaitara.

Course Overview The Primary ITO Trade Academy is a unique partnership between Rotorua Lakes High, Primary ITO, and primary industry employers. Blending classroom study with on-job learning and one day per week industry placement in Year 12. Students specialise in an area of the Primary ITO and complete standards in that Industry’s chosen discipline.
