Aside from hosting the national 2014 Regional Arts Australia Summit in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, this is our first statewide regional arts gathering since Geraldton’s Open Your Eyes in 2011.

In those six years the most significant change has been the introduction of the Creative Regions program, and the income, jobs, arts projects and social impact this has helped create. It’s important we continue to tell the story of the success of this investment and advocate for its continuation.

The many performances, activities and speakers you will enjoy over the next 4 days will highlight this creative output and hopefully inspire new works and build better communities.

We are delighted to be presenting the 2017 WA Regional Arts Summit in Mandurah, celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre and its success in developing as an artistic hub for the region with strong connections to local government and local arts organisations.

While we celebrate what is great within our sector, we also need to constantly question our practice and challenge ourselves to continually improve. As your peak body, we are keen to hear from you about our focus for the next three years and the key messages you will take home to your communities.

It is my great pleasure to welcome you all to the 2017 WA Regional Arts Summit in Mandurah. Mandurah is a place with a rich cultural tradition and natural beauty; acknowledged as a regional city with a bright future and a place that I am fortunate to call home.

The region is the traditional home to the Noongar people, who generously share so much of their culture and stories with us; it is a unique cultural tourism destination with magnificent coastal and bush ecologies and world famous ancient formations attracting people from across the globe.

You have travelled from far and wide, gathering to share your stories, to celebrate your achievements and inspire each other by connecting with something that is bigger than its parts.

Culture and arts are an essential and powerful connector contributing to a community’s wellbeing and social cohesion, and plays a vital role in building and strengthening communities in regional Western Australia. Regional artists and communities in WA continue to show their innovative and inspired approaches to telling our unique stories, and to making, participating and celebrating the arts across this state.

We’re excited to be jointly hosting the Summit with the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre, as it will provide us a unique opportunity to show the vibrancy and depth of artistic talent locally and across regional WA.

I’d like to thank the Board of Country Arts WA for bringing this conference to Mandurah. I’d also like to acknowledge and pay respects to the Bindjareb people for the contribution they make to the life of this City and the region.

We’re very fortunate to have a wealth of talent across a number of artistic pursuits in Mandurah and the region, which we aim to highlight in our annual events and programs.

The Summit program will also allow the City to showcase its leadership role in arts, culture and heritage, which we know is very important to our community.

Our ongoing investment in arts and culture reinforces Mandurah’s place as a tourist destination and as an exemplar of innovative arts and culture practices.

Wearable Art Wearable Art Mandurah invites local, national and international artists to create extravagant, revolutionary and provocative works of art on the body. Featuring 2017’s spectacular winning wearable art garments, Artistic Director Tash Kennedy, Principal of DTX Studios in Mandurah, has created a show exclusively for the Summit incorporating a sense of drama, musicality and theatricality.

Fearless Fearless is an action packed, exciting and magical show. Featuring daring aerials, suspension, flying and falling, hold onto your breath and enjoy watching the world class performers as they face their inner fears to emerge joyously unafraid of this crazy, wild and wonderful thing called life!

Created by MAXIMA in co-production with Mandurah Performing Arts Centre. This presentation will also feature emerging artists from Pulse Productions & the Mandurah community.

Riptide Youth Theatre Take a short audio adventure Walk With Me with Mandurah’s premiere youth performance company.

HydroDome Films The HydroDome focuses on our community’s connection to our waterways from Mandurah’s ancient Bindjareb heritage to 21st century recreation. Internationally recognised digital artist, Dave Carson, UK based sound artist, Justin Wiggan, and award- winning choreographer, Bernadette Lewis, are capturing the sights, sounds and movements of Mandurah and Peel’s community’s interaction with its precious waterways.

Mandjar Tumbles “The Art of Taking Healthy Risks” Circus program featuring Pulse Circus and students from local Peel high schools tumbling, trapezing and taking awesome risks in this circus extravaganza.

Mandjar Dances Enjoy the resurgence of traditional Bindjareb dance with performances by several local dance groups including Kongal Marawar Ngoon Dancers and Wardong Dancers.

Regional Development Australia Peel and The Makers welcome you to Make Place as the Summit’s After Hours Venue. A place to unwind, eat, enjoy the Peel’s musical talent and carry on the conversations started during the day.

Regional Development Australia Peel and The Makers have been holding arts events at Make Place in an attempt to activate Mandurah’s city centre in the evenings - an important outcome of the Peel Regional Arts and Culture Strategy. These events have been as diverse as the Tiny Shops on Wheels, stand-up comedy, song writing workshops, artist networking... and of course music.

Cultural Development Network (CDN) addresses its goal of a “culturally rich and vibrant society” by working to increase the expression of culture through the platform of the arts, libraries and heritage. They do this by building the capacity of local government across Australia to support artists and local communities and work towards integrated planning across all levels of government. This workshop is for a step by step guide for anyone to develop their own planning resource.

Experience the power of Culture Counts to use data to make better programming decisions, focus marketing efforts and grow audiences. This workshop will focus on a practical introduction to the Culture Counts system, strategic alignment of measures, survey development and delivery. See a range of examples with a focus on how smaller arts organisations can start using it and develop your evaluation approach over time.

Bindjareb Pinjarra An improvised comedy created and performed by Nyoongar and Wadjella (whitefella) actors, Bindjareb Pinjarra demonstrates extraordinary risk taking through its fusion of history, outrageous comedy and physical theatre. The catalyst for the show is the mass killing of Nyoongar people at Pinjarra on October 28, 1834 - recorded as the Battle of Pinjarra but mourned by locals as a massacre.

Sandfly Flies to Mandurah Sandfly Circus, Theatre Kimberley

From Broome, Theatre Kimberley’s Sandfly Circus is WA’s premier regional youth circus featuring gravity-defying aerials and acrobatics, mind-boggling balance and manipulation skills.

The Sandflies are joining forces with Anni Davey (Circus Oz), to create an exciting new work for a full-scale production in September. “To There And Back Again” is an exploration of travel and locomotion. See what happens when a gang of isolated Kimberley kids just have to get out of here! Excerpts of this work are being performed at the Summit in Mandurah.

The Sandfly Circus is part of the Act-Belong-Commit Theatre Kimberley Youth Theatre Program 2017-2019.

Silent Volumes Pare Randall, Artgold

Silent Volumes, a contemporary dance piece, explores Aboriginal Dreaming, Maori gods, ancestral guidance. A journey across two lands connecting two cultural identities.

Created in Kalgoorlie, Silent Volumes aims to tackle many questions of ‘belonging’: How do we transform a new country from the unfamiliar into a home? How do we maintain our heritage while we call this new place ‘home’? By discovering the existing stories before us - that is land, sea, sky and everything in between - we amazingly translate it through cultural, creative and artistic expression.

The Beauty Index Experience: Delegates Workshop Annette Carmichael

In a world destabilised by fear, can beauty be a countering force?

Experience the creative processes of choreographer and community engagement specialist, Annette Carmichael in workshops that culminate in a performance for the Summit. Men especially encouraged to participate.

In November 2017, Annette will premiere The Beauty Index, a large-scale dance performance created with local men from Denmark, WA. You have a chance to see inside this project, meet some of the team and perform with them at the closing event. These sessions offer active, experiential learning that will ensure you have a memorable conference.

Movement is suited to all abilities. Delegates must attend all sessions.

Cultural Tour Pinjarra Massacre Site

Kaya - welcome to a personal perspective of the region by local traditional owner Karrie-Anne Kearing and members of her family. Your visit will include a moving audio tour of the Pinjarra Massacre Site, location of the 1834 tragedy where white settlers killed local Aboriginal people. Discover the Murray Districts Cultural Centre with a guided tour of Bindjareb Park and learn about the bush and local Dreamtime stories. You will also enjoy a Bush Tucker morning or afternoon tea.

Be inspired by the multi-faceted approach Southern Forest Arts took to assist the Northcliffe and Windy Harbour communities in recovering from the trauma of the 2015 Bushfire including:

• Rising From the Ashes sculptural commission by Kim Perrier

Regional Produce The Comedy Emporium

Presented by regional arts producer The Comedy Emporium, Regional Produce showcases a huge variety of performers, original work, musical improvisers and ‘new on the scene’ stand-up comedians.

The all star line-up includes powerhouse duo Kellee Aberg and Rosie Sitorus from Fat Girls in Bike Shorts, a hilarious glimpse into the life of the two girls who are grabbing life by the ‘handles’ and holding on for the ride.

Also appearing is Australian/Canadian comedian Tor Snyder - star of the touring work Dating Naked and young gun trio Jackson Canny, Joseph Tanti and Tye Taylor from Smells Like Meme Spirit to name a few.

The Mandurah Performing Arts Centre - supported by Murdoch University School of the Arts, MZI Resources and Jackson Drawing Supplies present the Young Artists Perspective exhibition 2017. The program provides students with a forum to express their ambitions and apprehensions in relation to their future and that of society in expressing an insight into youth values and encouraging discussions on contemporary cultural and social issues.

The Young Artists Perspective exhibition showcases the art of young people from twelve high schools in our regions at Alcoa Mandurah Art Gallery this will include works created through the Visual Arts Education within the Community program giving students the opportunity to work with professional artists. The exhibition and

programs has been an annual event since 1998 and serves to support young artists in our regions to develop their creative skills, artistic perspective, conceptual ideas and presentation skills in a highly professional gallery exhibition space.

Young artists have created artworks using a variety of mediums and techniques across a broad range of artistic disciplines: painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, digital-media etc. A feature of the exhibition is a series of collaborative works between students and professional artists. The intention of this exhibition is to showcase the diverse works being made by emerging young artists in our regions and to allow us the opportunity to benefit from the exposure to their creativity.

“Hold That Thought” by Gemma Michelle Jeffrey

FacebackFaceback is an antidote to online social networking, hosted by UK artist and performance maker Katie Etheridge. Faceback is a durational live artwork that will unfold throughout the Summit. Your face is turned into a badge and worn by someone you haven’t met yet. Your mission is to get your face back! This is a great opportunity to network and create connections that go beyond our time here at the Summit.

Yamaji Art Runs throughout the whole Summit

For their Showcase exhibition ‘Our Story Through Stitches’, Yamaji Art have created a series of pieces using natural fibres such as wool into felt, natural dyes (berries, ash, turmeric, ochre) and woven onto natural materials including wood and rocks to form an installation showcasing the culture and stories unique to the Midwest/Yamaji region. The materials were gathered from local sites in and around Geraldton, Mullewa and other locations.

Pottery Exhibition by Community FirstFriday 13th October

Community First offers an innovative and individualised program for people with disabilities - Ability Arts. It offers activities which allow freedom of expression and experimentation with many different types and forms of art including pottery. Come and meet some of the potters and see works by award winning artists.

Tiny Shop on WheelsSaturday 14th October

A collective of Peel based artists, makers and creators. The concept of putting individual shops on wheels is to uniquely showcase each artist’s work in a contemporary eye-catching way. It is all about encouraging people to shop local and build a sustainable business model for artists. As a collective the Tiny Shops on Wheels roll in and activate the spaces.

The 2017 WA Regional Arts Summit is made possible by Departments of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and Primary Industries and Regional Development with funding from Creative Regions, a $24 million investment in culture and the arts across Western Australia.

Lotterywest The 2017 WA Regional Arts Summit is made possible by the

support of Lotterywest. Lotterywest supported the Summit’s program and its community engagement activities as well as the Volunteer Travel and Registration Assistance Program, supporting participation of regional volunteers from across Western Australia.

The Showcase features seven projects that were selected due to strong outcomes reflecting the identity of their local area. Wesley EnochModerator

Wesley Enoch is the Director of the Sydney Festival for 2017-2019. He has been a theatre director and writer for over 25 years specialising in Aboriginal Theatre and cultural stories. Wesley has been the Artistic Director of companies including Queensland Theatre Company, Ilbijerri and Kooemba Jdarra, as well as the Festival of Pacific Arts – Australia. As a freelance director and writer Wesley has worked with virtually all the large theatre companies, arts centres and festivals in Australia and won multiple awards including The Patrick White Playwrighting Award, Helpmann Awards for best production and best new Australian work and Matilda Awards. Wesley is currently the Chair of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Strategy Panel for the Australia Council, and sits on a number of other committees and Boards.

Sue MiddletonSynthesiser

Currently the Director of Grassroots Development, a consulting and project development business; as well as the Executive Director of the Brennan Rural Group in Wongan Hills, Sue Middleton is bringing a wealth of regional leadership and expertise to the Summit.

Sue’s current Board positions include Landcorp Board and Landcare Advisory Committee, while previously she has been the Chair of the WA Regional Development Trust (which provided advice on the allocation of the Royalties for Regions program), the Wheatbelt NRM Board and the National Rural Advisory Council.

We look forward to Sue’s unique perspectives as she identifies the key emerging issues and opportunities that arise throughout the Summit and then draws the threads together so that collectively we develop a clear sense of “where to from here”.

The organic design elements for this year’s Mandurah Summit branding are based on the distinctive markings of the Blue Manna Crab, endemic to the Peel region. Illustrated by Paula Fletcher, the pattern was hand drawn, digitised, and coloured with beautiful indigo ink. The Manna blue and Shell pink of the summit colour pallette were also inspired by the Blue Manna.
