President’s Report
I am pleased to reflect on the 2012 year and present my fourth report to you as President.
The year has certainly been another busy one, with lots of things happening both on and off the court.
Our game continues to grow at all levels from grass-roots to elite, and I think during 2012, we have started to see some positive outcomes as a result of decisions we have made over the past few years.
Adelaide ThunderbirdsSeason 2012 saw the Adelaide Thunderbirds return to finals action, having missed out in 2011. It was an agonising one goal loss to the eventual competition winners The Waikato BOP Magic in the semi-final in New Zealand that ended their season.
Whilst this loss was devastating for both the team and its supporters, the enthusiasm and endeavour of the coaching staff and playing group could not be faulted. Sitting in the stands in New Zealand for that game, I could not have been prouder of our team – they gave it their all and left nothing in the tank.
I would like to thank the coach Jane Woodlands-Thompson, and her panel of Assistant Coaches, the players and all the support staff of the Adelaide Thunderbirds both on and off the court, as well as all the volunteers, for their part in ensuring we continue to be involved and competitive at this elite level.
I would also like to acknowledge and thank the Premier Partner of the Adelaide Thunderbirds in 2012, Fairmont Homes, as well as all the other sponsors that were with us this year. Their passion and enthusiasm for our team is greatly appreciated.
Rebecca Bulley capped off her debut season with the Thunderbirds by scooping the pools and winning all three awards on offer at the Adelaide Thunderbirds Gala Dinner. Rebecca has not only had an outstanding season on the court, but she is also having an impact with her off court role at Netball SA as NetSetGO! & Community Development Co-ordinator.
Australian Netball League (ANL) One of the major highlights of 2012 was the Southern Force taking out the ANL title. This competition is seen by Netball Australia as a stepping stone to the ANZ Championships. It certainly was a fantastic team effort, and the girls played an outstanding brand of netball.
I would like to congratulate the coach Tania Obst, all of the players and all of the support staff for their involvement in what was an outstanding achievement.
The team was an exciting mix of youth and experience, and they were able to overcome anything that opposition teams tried to throw at them.
A number of the members of this team will be competing for places in the Australian 21 & Under Team to play in the World Youth Championships in 2013. We wish them all the best of luck as they strive to represent their country.
Congratulations to Kate Shimmin, who won our ANL Player of the Year Award.
State Underage TeamsAgain this year, all of our Teams were competitive and competed in the finals series.
Our 21 & Under Team made it to the grand final, but finished second, the 19 & Under Team finished in third place and the 17 & Under Team finished fourth.
Congratulations to all the players in each of these teams selected to represent South Australia. I would also like to thank the Coaches and Managers for giving their time to work with these talented athletes.
We also had a number of players named in Australian Squads. Well done to all of these players!
Subway Cup State Premier Netball CompetitionSeason 2012 saw the introduction of Phoenix Netball Club into the Subway Cup Premier Netball Competitions Premier Grade for the first time, and they certainly hit the ground running. They managed to make the Grand Finals of both the Premier League and the Reserves grade, which was a credit to the club.
2
Congratulations must go to Contax Netball Club, who won the 2012 Subway Cup Grand Final in emphatic style against a gallant Phoenix.
Contax took out the double by also winning the Reserves Premiership, also with a win over Phoenix.
I would again like to thank Subway, as naming rights sponsor of our State Premier Netball Competition, for their continued involvement with our sport. We appreciate their involvement and look forward to continuing a long and successful partnership into the future.
May I congratulate all the award winners for 2012 and can I also take a moment to thank all of the players, coaches, umpires, scorers and timekeepers who have participated in the 2012 Subway Cup State Premier Netball Competition. The individual winners were:
Premier League MVP Leigh Waddington
Rookie of the Year Chelsea Lemke
Reserve Grade MVP Jasmine Lade
Umpire Achievement Natasha Trestrail
I would also like to congratulate South Australian umpire Natasha Trestrail who was awarded her A Badge in the 2012 season.
As a spectator at most games over the past few years, it was clearly evident to me that the gap between top and bottom is narrowing. The Premier League Clubs are to be congratulated for the work they are doing in ensuring that the players in this competition are prepared both physically and mentally for the highest competition in our State.
The Premier grade will consist of eight teams in 2013, with the recent announcement that Tango Netball Club would be elevated in 2013. Tango have done a huge amount of work in ensuring that the Club is heading in the right direction both on and off the court, and I would like to congratulate their Management Committee for their outstanding work to date.
Country ChampionshipsThe South Australian Country Championships were again held over the June long weekend this year. It was a special occasion with the Championships celebrating their 70th Birthday.
To mark the occasion, an afternoon tea was held on the Sunday afternoon, where all of the Thunderbirds players and coaches were in attendance. It was great to see our elite players enjoying the celebrations with folk from the country and city alike.
We were also delighted that our Patron, Gwen Benzie AM was able to join us, as were many of our other Life Members. There were plenty of stories about previous Championships, and a good time was had by all.
There was some fantastic netball played over the long weekend, and the weather was even on its best behaviour.
The winners of the Country Championships were:
A Grade River Murray
B Grade Port Lincoln
17 & Under Division 1 Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara
15 & Under Division 1 Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara
13 & Under Division 1 Western Border
Congratulations to all of the players, coaches and umpires involved in the Championships.
I would also sincerely like to thank all of the Organising Committee and the Chairperson, Lorrae Lawrie, the staff at Netball SA who give up their entire weekend to help out, along the many volunteers who help make this event the success that it is.
Council Delegates & Life Members I am pleased to say that Council meetings continue to be a valuable source of information for our Association that allows us to know first hand what is happening at the grass roots level of our sport.
There has been some healthy debate this year, and it is important that we are able to continue to discuss matters that are affecting our sport in a friendly and non-threatening environment.
I have been disappointed at some meetings this year when numbers have been down. I strongly urge all Associations to ensure that their voice is heard at future Council meetings to ensure that we continue to work with a united approach and manner in all matters affecting our sport.
3
President’s Report cont.
May I thank all Delegates for giving up your time, sharing your ideas and contributing to what has become a great forum for healthy discussion and debate.
It is with sadness that I report the passing of two treasured life members, they are; Iris Rogers and Ron Blake.
Sponsors and Partners In the current economic climate, it is fair to say that sporting organisations need to work extremely hard to earn a dollar. Our organisation is no exception.
I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the South Australian Government, through the Department of Recreation and Sport, for their continued support given to netball in South Australia and in particular the SASI netball program.
I would also like to thank all of the organisations who have supported us as sponsors throughout 2012. Your contributions to our sport are very much appreciated and we trust that our partnerships can continue for many years to come.
Our relationship with Netball Australia continues to get stronger, and I would sincerely like to thank them for the assistance and support they provide us in the delivery of our sport.
Australian RepresentationThe tradition of South Australia providing outstanding leaders for our National Teams continued again this season. The three Australian teams (the Diamonds, the Australian U21 and the Australian U19 teams) all had South Australians named as captains.
Our very own Natalie von Bertouch was again named Captain of the Australian Diamonds, Madeleine Proud captained the U21 team, and Amehlia Schmidt was named Captain of the U19 team.
I would like to congratulate each of these wonderful ambassadors for their achievements and look forward to many more good things to come.
We also had four of our Adelaide Thunderbirds – Natalie von Bertouch, Erin Bell, Renae Hallinan and Rebecca Bulley – all play for the Australian Diamonds this year. Well done to
all of these players. To play for your country is something you should all be very proud of.
Another Adelaide Thunderbird – Kate Shimmin – was selected in the Australian Fast5 Team that recently competed in New Zealand.
The good news continues with the fact that we had six South Australians named in the Australian 21 and Under Team, four South Australians named in the Australian 19 and Under Team, and four players included in the Australian 17 and Under Talent ID squad.
I think this all proves the work we are doing in the player development areas, is starting to pay dividends.
Committees and Volunteers Our sport relies heavily on volunteers, who give freely of their time to make it possible for thousands of netballers throughout the State to take the court. You are an integral part of our sport, and your contribution is appreciated enormously.
Netball SA has a number of committees that are staffed by volunteers, who play a significant role in the running of our sport. These include:
• Netball SA Board
• Stadium Board
• Netball Development Committee
• Umpiring and Coaching Committees
• Foundation Divisions Committees
• Country Championships Organising Committee
• Audit and Risk Committee.
I sincerely thank all those people who have volunteered their time and expertise in various roles on each of these Committees, and look forward to your continued involvement in the future.
A big thank you goes out to all coaches and umpires throughout all areas of our State. You form a vital part of our sport, and your commitment and dedication to your craft is very much appreciated. To those who aspire to greater things as either a coach or umpire, I wish you every success. I look forward to seeing the number of South Australian elite coaches and umpires continue to increase over the next few years.

Netball SA StaffThe staff of Netball SA, which includes those who work in the Stadium, work tirelessly to ensure that things run smoothly and that the needs of our members, sponsors and spectators are met.
This group of incredible staff, have, until her recent resignation, been under the guidance of our CEO, Stephanie Greene. Stephanie has been our CEO for the past three and a half years, and has had a significant impact on our organisation in that short time.
She has brought a greater level of professionalism to the way we do business, which has resulted in greater financial security. She has certainly left the organisation in a strong and secure position.
On behalf of the Board and all our members and stakeholders, I would like to sincerely thank Steph for all of the excellent work she has done for us during her tenure. We wish her all the best in her future endeavours.
The search is currently underway to find our next CEO, and a formal announcement is expected in the new year.
I thank Clare Harris for taking on the role of Acting CEO whilst this search is undertaken.
Netball SA Board I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the members of the Netball SA Board for of their valuable contributions to our Association, and for the support and loyalty they have shown to me as President.
There were two new Board members who joined the team this year – Tanya Denning and Glenn Docherty – and both have been fantastic contributors this year.
The entire Board has shown great commitment to our great sport, and have approached all tasks and duties with professionalism and enthusiasm. It has again been an extremely busy year for the Board and I congratulate them all for their dedication and the high level of integrity that they have shown in undertaking their roles.
Marlene Elliott, who has been on our Board for five years, will not be continuing in 2013. Marlene has recently accepted a transfer with her employer to Melbourne, and as such will not be seeking re-appointment. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Marlene for the valuable contribution she has made as a Board member of Netball SA
As President, I have valued her contributions, her ability to think outside the square and the passion that she has for the sport of netball, which she clearly wears on her sleeve. Her articulate and persuasive manner and her strong opinions on all matters will certainly be missed.
Conclusion There has certainly been alot happening during 2012, and from the looks of things, 2013 will be similar.
We are continuing to review the way we do things, to ensure we stay ahead of the pack. It is evident that there are some great success stories to come out of 2012. We need to sit back and reflect on these and enjoy them. We sometimes get too caught up in moving on to the next thing that we forget to look at some of the fantastic things that we have achieved.
The announcements late in the year about the establishment of a City Academy and a Northern Suburbs Academy are exciting things to look forward to in 2013, and are long overdue.
I take this opportunity to thank all of our stakeholders involved in our sport and wish all players, umpires, coaches, officials, staff, sponsors and supporters every success for 2013.

CEO Report
2012 has been a challenging and rewarding year for
Netball SA.
Over the past 12 months Netball SA has initiated objectives to continually meet the needs of its members, business and stakeholders and has performed well against the last year of the Netball SA Strategic Plan.
Internally all business units performed well with some exciting statistics in our Game Development Department, along with a strong performance in the Commercial and Stadium environments.
The development of our South Australian netballers has provided us with some great results throughout 2012 with 5 South Australian’s being offered Australian Institute of Sport Scholarships – congratulations to Madeleine Proud, Kate Shimmin, Amehlia Schmidt, Cody Lange and Chelsea Lemke. These young ladies will head to Canberra in preparation for the 2013 World Youth Cup in Glasgow.
SASI and our High Performance model have continued to be more integrated this year with further scholarship holders announced by SASI and the ANL team (now known as the Southern Force), winning the 2012 ANL Championship against the NSW Waratahs. Congratulations to Madeleine Proud on her recognition as the 21 and Under Player of the Year at the Australian Netball Awards.
What is sure to be remembered as a nail biting finish was the semi final match for our Adelaide Thunderbirds against the WBOP Magic in New Zealand. Our girls played tremendously well but came away with a 1 goal loss in the last 20 seconds leaving them in fourth position for the 2012 ANZ Championship season. Congratulations to Natalie Von Bertouch, Rebecca Bulley, Renae Hallinan and Erin Bell on their selection to the Australian Netball Diamonds Team.
Contax and Phoenix were both successful in making the Grand Final in both grades of the 2012 Subway Cup Competition. Congratulations to Contax who achieved a win in both grades.
2012 has continued to see growth through our Game Development department particularly around Net Set GO! and Coach and Umpire development. Netball SA introduced two new Academies – the Northern Suburbs Netball Academy and the Adelaide Metropolitan Academy.
Throughout 2012 Netball SA has continued its roadmap of support through its community programs and relationships across schools, indigenous and local government. A key area of focus was our Northern Suburbs activity – an outcome of the Northern Suburbs taskforce in late 2011.
Moving ForwardNetball SA will begin to form a new Strategic Plan which will ensure our approach for the coming years. Key strategic pillars will include: Vibrant Community Sport, Sustainable Business & Industry Leader, Excellence in High Performance and Stake-holder Relationships.
I would like to acknowledge and thank our two key stakeholders, firstly the South Australian Government, for their continued support particularly this year in debt relief on our stadium mortgage.
The Office for Recreation and Sport, lead by Paul Anderson and his team – Netball SA has been successful in a number of grant application bids across our community engagement activities and we thank them for their support in Netball.
Thanks also go to our Premier Partner, Fairmont Homes and Managing Director David Pickard. Their support of our business for the past 3 years has been tremendous.
Thanks also go to our committed Adelaide Thunderbirds and Netball SA Partners.
Many thanks to our fabulous volunteers who give up their time across our sport from grass roots through to the elite – we cannot thank you enough.
My thanks to the Netball SA Board who have bestowed an opportunity for me as Acting CEO and thanks to the Netball SA Leadership team – Colleen Edwards, Jane Woodlands-Thompson, Lizzie Bermingham and Nadine Hewson. These ladies drive our business and each of them I thank personally for their support and ongoing commitment.
Finally thanks to all the Netball SA staff who continue to be successful in their roles and work hard at their commitment to Netball in South Australia.
On a final note, I must acknowledge the work done by previous CEO, Stephanie Greene. Stephanie has moved our business forward strategically through this phase of growth as our sport approaches its professional peak and also allowed Netball SA to flourish across a revamped State Premier Netball Competition, sustainable business practices and an ongoing commitment to the development of netball in South Australia. We wish Stephanie well for her future endeavours.

Adelaide Thunderbirds
The Adelaide Thunderbirds rose up again to the finals of the ANZ Championship in 2012, making us the most successful Australian team in the competition to date.
In the most even year of competition in the ANZ Championships short history (where a loss could send us from top of the ladder to fifth in most weeks), the team took on a challenging travel roster which saw us make a record five International trips in a season, eventually falling one agonising goal short in the first semi-final in Hamilton to 2012 premiers, Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic.
The Adelaide Thunderbirds advanced two places on the premiership table from last year and earned the distinction of a record number of representatives in the Australian Diamonds and National 21 and Under Squads.
Once again, a South Australian rookie was selected in each playing third to accelerate their progress and give them an opportunity to become mainstream SA Thunderbirds in the near future with a view to concurrently grooming SA players for the 2013 World Youth Cup Team to compete in Glasgow.
The Adelaide Thunderbirds recruitment team secured major athlete signings, recruiting former Australian Internationals Bec Bulley and Renae Hallinan to address the gaps of 2011 across the developing half back line. Bulley and Hallinan both had outstanding seasons and were integral in the continued positive growth of the Adelaide Thunderbirds team culture. Their change to the pink dress saw them both reinstated in the Australian Diamonds Team within the calendar year and representing their country with great distinction.
Our underpinning squad, the ‘Thunderbabes’, generated great success with the entire squad plus eligible Adelaide Thunderbirds leading our ANL team, The Southern Force, to its first ever victory. Kate Shimmin was crowned the Southern Force’s Most Valuable Player, and Shimmin, Lange and Proud were leaders on and off the court in their respective court areas. Adelaide Thunderbirds underage players were released to their respective State Underage teams during the season to compete in Nationals to balance out their long term athletic development. I would like to acknowledge the fine work of the South Australian Sports Institute as well as our State Netball Premier Competition clubs and coaches in their co-management of Thunderbirds athletes during the year. Their successes are a credit to the smooth collaboration of all stakeholders.
Season highlights this year were bountiful. Our 27-goal win over the NSW Swifts in Sydney, double defeat of last year’s reining premiers the Queensland Firebirds and the gallant defeat of NZ power-house Mystics in Auckland were amongst the best. Although it was not the result we were after, turning around a 17-goal defeat three weeks prior in the semi-final to get within one against the Magic was a courageous and fearless attempt where we had to turn our game plan on its head to get there. There was not a dry eye in the room after the game as a fractured and totally spent group realised that our finals journey would end there. This experience will serve as the most potent motivation for 2013, as the team re-gathers and fights on.
Mention must be made of the fine work of our athletes in the Thunderbirds Leadership Program, and the grand achievement of three National Captains produced in 2012, with Natalie von Bertouch retaining her role as Diamonds skipper, and Maddy Proud (National 21 & Under Captain) and Amehlia Schmidt (National 19 & Under Captain) joined her to make 100% of 2012 National Captains South Australian.
The Adelaide Thunderbirds achieved another first this year not only in netball but in women’s sport by being the first female elite sports team to feature in the acclaimed production “The Code - Life With The Thunderbirds” on Fox network.

Commercial Operations Report
Throughout 2012 we have continued our support and contribution to the National Sponsorship Workgroup, an initiative established in 2010 by Netball Australia to grow our sport commercially across a national platform. This workgroup consists of key commercial managers from each state and has been successful in the delivery of over $5.4 million to netball since its inception.
As the commercial landscape continues to change, collective sponsorships are becoming more viable for large blue chip brands to buy into our sport, but they can also deliver funds from elite to grass roots. This area will be a continued focus for the commercial team as we enter what is forecast to be a difficult commercial landscape in 2013.
For our sport to remain commercially sustainable, an important part to our success is the development and implementation of the national technology platform – currently in the testing phase and due for implementation mid 2013. Key commercial strategies moving forward will include financial sustainability, a successful sport entertainment product, broadcast, digital assets and our memberships.
In 2012 we have continued to partner with strong brands and we thank them for their ongoing support of Netball SA and the Adelaide Thunderbirds.
Sadly with the current building industry climate, Fairmont Homes made the difficult decision to be prudent in their marketing spend and will not be continuing as Premier Partner in 2013. We cannot thank Managing Director, David Pickard and his team enough for their support, friendship and commitment to us over the past 3 years.
Our thanks go to our two Key Partners – Stratco and Simply Energy. Stratco’s commitment to the club is never ending and their innovation around marketing our brands is a delight to engage with.
Continued thanks and recognition must go to our State Premier Netball Competition partner – Subway. Subway has been the naming rights partner for 5 years and will continue for a 6th year in 2013.
Netball SA and the Adelaide Thunderbirds also thank the following partners for their support; Major Partners – Telstra and Holden, Team Sponsor – Jims Cleaning, Minor Partner – Foodland and our Corporate Partners – Nippy’s Fruit Juices, Schweppes, Balfours, Metro Holden, Trims, Gilbert, Under Armour, Elastoplast, Adelaide Fitness Solutions, Openbook Howden Printing, Wallis Cinemas, Sports in Focus, Kukri, Jacobs Creek, Wakefield Sports Clinic, Mini Melts and Media Partner Mix 102.3.
On a final note, it was exciting to welcome Onion TV to our club whereby they filmed a behind the scenes documentary with the Adelaide Thunderbirds called The Code – Life With The Thunderbirds. This show went to air on Fox Sports on November 1st and has received rave reviews. Thanks go to Sita Bacher, Media and Communications, along with the Adelaide Thunderbirds who have made this documentary on exciting and dynamic first for netball in Australia.

The Game Development team has experienced a very successful year in the areas of coach and umpire development, community engagement, competition development and member services.
A number of new staffing appointments to the Game Development team has allowed Netball SA to better service our affiliated associations, obtain a much improved community profile, increase participation levels through the San Remo NetSetGO! program and provide increased educational opportunities for coaches and umpires.
A focus for Netball SA during 2012 was the improved delivery of service to our membership. Netball SA was proud to distribute the Netball SA Member Directory to all affiliated associations – a comprehensive information resource regarding the full Netball SA business. Netball SA also provided extensive assistance to members with respect to dispute and complaint handling, child safe environments and information on key government programs such as STARCLUB. A number of affiliated clubs and associations were successful in obtaining grant monies for facility and club development with the support of Netball SA. Most notably, the Kangaroo Island Netball Association received funding for all coaches to complete the Foundation and Development coaching accreditations and the Keith Netball Club received significant funding for a multi purpose re-development of their home courts.
There has been a significant level of activity carried out in the northern suburbs by Netball SA, in relation to the development of athletes, coaches, umpires and administrators in response to the release of the Northern Suburbs Taskforce Report in 2011. In particular, Netball SA is very excited about the implementation of the Northern Metropolitan Netball Academy which will support development within the two key northern associations in the Elizabeth Netball Association and the South Australian Districts Netball Association (SADNA). Under the stewardship of Margaret Angove, OAM and Netball SA Coach Consultant, the Northern Metropolitan Academy will be operational in 2013 and will mirror the highly successful Netball SA Regional Academy format.
The Adelaide Metropolitan Netball Academy was also established in 2012 to develop metropolitan athletes in the 11-13 and 14-16 age groups. This Academy competes in the City Night competition and will follow the Netball Australia Dare to Develop a Diamond program. This represents a fantastic opportunity to develop metropolitan based athletes, coaches and umpires.
Netball SA is incredibly proud of the success of the Southern Force team who, under Head Coach Tania Obst, won the 2012 Australian Netball League competition against the NSW Waratahs. This is an outstanding result for the Southern Force given that this team finished in sixth place in 2011.
The Competitions team has experienced a highly successful year as administrators of the Subway Cup – the second year of this reformed competition. In 2013 Netball SA will welcome Tango Netball Club into the Subway Cup to compete in the Premier Grade in 2013 – a position which was earned by Tango through the submission of an Expression of Interest to an independent panel. The Competitions team were also responsible for administering a highly successful 70th Anniversary Country Championships in which 97 teams participated and which featured an A grade curtain-raiser match between Western Border and North Eastern held prior to the Adelaide Thunderbirds v QLD Firebirds ANZ Championship match.
The Community Development team has focussed efforts in 2012 on increasing our community profile by building relationships with schools, key community groups and government, in particular; the Office for Recreation and Sport, Multicultural Youth South Australia, the South Australian Aboriginal Sports Training Academy and SASRAPID. It has been a key priority for Netball SA to gain increased exposure for our game through these community groups who service Indigenous Australians, youths with integration difficulties, refugees and youth of a culturally and linguistically diverse background.

The Community Development team has also focussed on improving the NetSetGO! program and establishing a strong netball presence in schools. In 2012 Netball SA has achieved record figures in NetSetGO! with over 7,500 participants – more than double the number of participants than 2011. Netball SA has also generated a greater profile in schools in the form of the Schools Information Booklet, the Thunderbirds Cup, school netball clinics, the implementation of the NSA School Ambassadors Program and participation on the Netball Australian School Strategy Workgroup. A strong presence in South Australian schools, coupled with an excellent NetSetGO! program is critical to ensuring participation levels in netball continue to grow. Our engagement with community groups and schools as well as continual improvement to the NetSetGO! program will be an ongoing priority in 2013.
The areas of coach and umpire development have experienced excellent growth during 2012. Under the guidance of Roz Fraser (our newly appointed State Coach Program Manager), the processes required for the Netball Australia coach accreditations have been improved and we have recently obtained three new Advanced accredited coaches – a course which has not been run by Netball SA since 2010. We have also enjoyed record numbers attending various coach education sessions including Coaches in the Field and Dare to Develop a Diamond which is indicative of the excellent topics and informative presenters featured in 2012.
Similarly, there has been great support by the umpiring members for more development opportunities which was reflected by high attendance levels at the Level One and Rules in Action sessions across the state. The grass roots development of umpires is also very well accounted for as Netball SA and the regions continue to run a very prosperous Coloured Shirt Program. It was also a fantastic achievement for Netball SA to obtain a National A Badge during the Member Organisation Exchange with Western Australia in May 2012.

High Performance and Development Programs
National TeamsThe Australian Netball Diamonds competed in the Holden Netball Test Series and won the Quad Series against England, South Africa and New Zealand but they lost the Constellation Cup against New Zealand.
Via the Adelaide Thunderbirds, South Australia provided five Australian Squad members in Sharni Layton (withdrawn due to injury), Natalie Von Bertouch, Erin Bell, Renae Hallinan and Rebecca Bulley.
Kate Shimmin was the only South Australian to represent Australia in the Fast 5 Australian Diamonds team. The Fast5 Australian Diamonds finished 6th overall in the 2012 Fast5 Netball World Series held at Vector Arena in Auckland NZ.
Cody Lange, Chelsea Lemke, Madeleine Proud and Kate Shimmin all represented Australia in the Under 21s and Amehlia Schmidt was included in the 19/U squad.
Netball SA wishes to congratulate our South Australian Netballers who captained our national teams in 2012. Congratulations to Natalie Von Bertouch (Australian Netball Diamonds), Madeleine Proud (Australian 21 and Under) and Amehlia Schmidt (Australian 19 and Under).
South Australian Institute of Sport (SASI)Program Purpose / Aim
The SASI Netball Program caters for the development and support of SA athletes currently or identified as capable of selection to National Squads and Teams.
Program Key Objectives
• For the SASI program to identify and develop athletes who are capable of delivering skills consistently under pressure in a seamless transition through the pathway to AIS, Aust Talent Squads, ANL and ANZ Championship.
• For the SASI full scholarship holders to satisfy the criteria of ‘has genuine potential” to play for the National 19 & 21/under Teams / Australian Netball Diamonds / ANL and ANZ Championship.
• For the SASI program to utilise all available resources to produce a ‘best practice’ program incorporating the full suite of institute services individually tailored to each full scholarship holder working towards National team selection.
• For the SASI program to provide the base of talent for
the ANL Program, the underpinning program for ANZ Championship so that training can take place all year round, and give better weighting to the priority of ANL.
• For the SASI coaching program to foster positive “dual care” relationships with partner coaches of athletes participating in The Subway Cup and ANZ Championship.

New Idea Australian Netball LeagueIn 2012 the Australian Netball League(ANL) was contested by 10 teams over 6 minor rounds with the finals series taking place over 2 days at the Waverley Netball Centre on the 14th and 15th of September.
2012 saw the inclusion of the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) team in the ANL competition with 2 South Australian Athletes, Amehlia Schmidt and Laura Marslen participating as part of their year in residence at the AIS.
The ANL is the pinnacle Australian Netball Competition, and is the pathway competition to the ANZ Championship; Netball fans have the opportunity to see the country’s rising netball stars in action bridging the gap between the competitions at State League Level and the ANZ Championship.
In 2012 South Australia made their mark on the ANL competition, both on and off the court. A rebranding saw the team re-named the Southern Force, a name that was
20
first suggested by the 2011 South Australian ANL team members. On the court the Southern Force dominated taking out the title of ANL Champions. Led by Captain Leigh Waddington the Southern Force dropped only 1 match in their quest for the title before taking on the NSW Waratah’s in the Championship match. The Southern Force were too strong for the 2011 ANL Champions the NSW Waratahs, and won in stand out fashion 50 – 36.
Captain Leigh Waddington has been rewarded with a berth in the 2013 Adelaide Thunderbirds team with Southern Force athletes Chelsea Lemke, Cody Lange, Maddy Proud, Amehlia Schmidt and Kate Shimmin all heading to the AIS with scholarships for the 2013 season.
Subway Cup The Subway Cup is the State Premier Netball Competition and is the pinnacle competition in South Australia, acting as a pre-elite preparation ground for players, coaches and officials.
In 2012, the Subway Cup introduced a 7th team into the Premier Grade of the Competition – Phoenix Netball Club.
The 2012 Premier Grade Teams were:
• Cougars
• Newton Jaguars
• Contax
• Matrics
• Woods Panthers
• Garville
• Phoenix
The Reserves competition remained at 10 teams.
The 2012 Reserve Grade Teams were:
• Cougars
• Newton Jaguars
• Contax
• Phoenix
• Garville
• Tango
• Harlequin
• Western Jets
• Matrics
• Woods Panthers
Contax were victorious in both the Subway Cup Premier Grade and the Reserve Grade Premiership in 2012, dominant over Phoenix in both Grand Finals.
Tango Netball Club has been successful in receiving a place in the Premier Grade for 2013.
Coach Development
2012 has been an innovative and popular year for coach development. There was an unprecedented explosion of interest in the Coaches in the Field Workshops with a 360% increase in participation year on year.
A number of specialist workshops featuring a cast of elite presenters were run with great success including: Diamonds on the Move Coaching Forum - “Attacking the Transverse Line the Australian Way”, Defenders and Shooters Coaching Forum, Selectors Workshop and a Strength and Conditioning Workshop.
Two Back Bench Coach Forums were held in 2012, the first was held at the Adelaide Thunderbirds VS Melbourne Vixens match at Netball SA Stadium and the other at the Holden Netball Test Series Quad Match held at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre. The series of workshops has been an invaluable way for South Australian Coaches to access and learn from the elite Netball environment and we look forward to the programs further growth and success in 2013.
Dare to Develop a Diamond is a ground breaking new initiative from Netball Australia. The program is targeted at coaches of 11-13 year old athletes and focuses on player development. The syllabus was launched this year and met with great enthusiasm from almost 200 participants so far.

Umpire Development In 2012 the umpiring department continued the development and progression of quality umpiring programs, courses and development opportunities for umpires across the state. The successful implementation of these programs has seen a significant increase in the Level 1 Umpires Course and Rules in Action participant numbers. This increase in participant numbers indicates strong engagement at an association level. An increase was also recorded in C badge recipients, with a focus being placed on the transition of course participants to badged umpires.
Netball SA provided a significantly increased level of support and opportunities for the associations in 2012.
The umpiring department has conducted 32 mentoring sessions and development courses across SA.
The Netball SA State Premier Netball Umpiring Squad achieved many outstanding results again in 2012 with a total of three South Australian umpires selected to Umpire at National Netball Championships including Schoolgirls, 17/U Nationals, 19/U Nationals and 21/U Nationals. Six Squad members were also given the opportunity to umpire during the Australian Netball League.

Coloured Shirt ProgramThe Coloured Shirt Program, developed and supported by the Office for Recreation and Sport, has had continued success in 2012. The program is designed to identify new officials and offer an environment free of intimidation and harassment. The program offers mentoring and assistance to new umpires to maintain interest in and develop umpiring skills while guiding them along the Netball Australia Umpiring Pathway. A number of these participants, having completed the Coloured Shirt Program, will progress further with their umpiring skills.
In 2012, Netball SA continued to facilitate the Coloured Shirt Program in 32 Netball Associations and Clubs across the state .This is an increase of five centres or 18.5 % annual growth as compared to 2011 participation rates.
