Introduction

Our Phonological Worksheets are designed to be used by speech and language therapists, teachers, teaching assistants and carers when working with children to target final /p/.

The Phonological Worksheets provide activities which target a particular phoneme through:

• Production in isolation

• Sound awareness

• Single word level

• Easy phrase level

• Complex sentence level/conversation

This revised pack has been fully re-drawn, and now includes extensive word lists and sets of minimal pairs that represent common phonological processes or sound substitutions. The format also allows pictures to be used for literacy targets.

Suitable for a wide age and ability range, the pack is ideal for supplementing individual therapy plans and/or providing work for home and school.

Although the Phonological Worksheets were originally designed to be used by speech and language therapists, an increasing number of teachers are finding the materials a helpful resource within the classroom.

The particular focus on an individual phoneme, and the multiple examples provided from sound to word to phrase level, make the packs an ideal bank of differentiation activities for children who require higher levels of repetition and reinforcement.

Many sheets and activities have been adapted to give children the opportunity to write the letters that correspond with the spoken sounds (phonemes). However, teachers should be aware that, in some cases, the written representation of particular phonemes will not always match the spoken sound.

Examples: ‘giant’ SOUNDS like ‘jiant’; ‘ceiling’ SOUNDS like ‘seeling’.

Please note, speech and language therapists record sounds phonetically and you will therefore see that the sound ‘p’ is referred to as /p/ throughout this pack.

The Phonological Worksheet packs link particularly well to Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the teaching programme Letters and Sounds.1
