QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FOR UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI PETRONAS

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS added another milestone to its list of achievements when it became the first private university to be accredited by Standards Malaysia. It was indeed an eventful occasion when the University’s Universal Testing Machine (UTM) Laboratory was accredited under the Laboratory Accreditation Scheme of Malaysia. Ensuring that the facilities and services provided is up-to-date, relevant and consistent with the requirements of the industry, is important for the University to set it apart from its competitors.

On another note, the University was honoured to welcome YBhg Tan Sri Sidek Hassan, the new Chairman of PETRONAS to the campus. His illustrious career within the Malaysian Government administration machinery would provide immense input, guidance and counsel for the University in its pursuit of achieving research university status in Malaysia and global recognition as an institution of choice in technology education.

The period between July and September 2012 has indeed kept the University busy with meetings and visits from distinguished individuals, and experts in their respective fields and industry. Apart from the visit from YBhg Tan Sri Sidek Hassan, the University also hosted the 10th Academic Advisory Council Meeting, chaired by YABhg Tun Dr Mahathir bin Mohamed, UTP’s Chancellor. This year, the Council welcomed a new member, Prof. Dr. Haruo Takeda from Hitachi Ltd, Japan. The Council, over the years, has been instrumental in providing guidance and strategic direction for the University’s development.

Committed in its pursuit of achieving the research university status, the University lined up various activities that strengthens research and innovation culture within the campus. The activities included MOHE Research Fund Presentation and 12th Technology, Education and Career 2012. Also in connection to ensuring academic and R&D excellence, the University established collaborations by signing MOUs with three institutions from Korea. Apart from MOUs signing, the University also participated in the Symposium and round-table discussions with Prof. Ir. Dr. Ahmad Fadzil Mohd Hani leading the delegates.

Apart from the academic faculty and the management, the student community also experienced many eventful moments. The students were exposed to various writing techniques from journalistic perspective. Also, the students competed at the intervarsity level to win the coveted Rector’s Cup for debate and public speaking.

On the CSR front, the University continued making impactful changes to life by hosting students from the University of Tokyo under the UTP-UT Summer Programme 2012. The programme yielded bilateral benefits to both universities in various aspects – cultural exchange, diversity understanding and networking. In the month of Ramadhan, the University practiced the concept of ibadah through sharing by hosting Iftar. This year, His Royal Highness Raja DiHilir Perak, Raja Jaafar Raja Muda Musa blessed the occasion with his presence.

All in all, the quarter has kept everyone on his/her toes. The University was kept busy with activities that we hope would bring us closer to achieving our vision. It was a “busy-ness” that was truly productive!
