Presidents Report
This will be my final report as President and Board Member of Hockey ACT. It has been a great privilege and
honour to serve the Hockey Community for the last 8 years and to see how far the organisation has come.
The coming year will be challenging for the organisation, as it will be for the ACT Community as a whole,
but I am extremely confident that the current Board have the necessary skills and determination to get us
through this difficult time.
The HACT Board continues to remain strategically focused and continues to implement strategies to
increase participation, better utilise our facilities and ensure the financial sustainability of Hockey ACT and
hockey as a sport in the region into the future. The major change to be noted is that all aspects of this
report cover a 15 month period from 1 October 2018 – 31 December 2019. Moving forward Hockey ACT’s
financial year will operate in line with a regular calendar year.
As an organisation we have a continued focus to ensure we instil good governance, financial sustainability
and a future focus not only in ourselves but in all our member clubs. This in turn will continue to provide
for a strong hockey community in the ACT and surrounds.
I would like to thank the HACT Board who continue to go above and beyond in their tireless work to ensure
a strong future for the Association. I would like to acknowledge and thank Deb Bowden who resigned in
November 2019 for personal reasons and her commitment to the Board and welcome Peta Derham who
commenced in December 2019.
On behalf of Hockey ACT I would also like to thank all those who have contributed to the continued success
of hockey in the ACT over the past 15 months. I would like to acknowledge and thank our former CEO
Gavin Hunt who finished with Hockey ACT in June 2019 after 5 years with the organisation. Gavin has been
instrumental in the reshaping of the Hockey ACT business model and leaves the organisation stronger than
it was when he commenced. Rob Sheekey who has been the General Manager commenced as the new
CEO on a full time basis in December 2019 after filling the role on an interim basis since June.
Hockey ACT is exceptionally fortunate to have a highly committed staff that are supported by an army of
volunteers and committee members that continue to drive the Hockey in the ACT forward. Hockey ACT is
reliant upon your strong contribution and we are very appreciative for your support of the Association and
its affiliated clubs to remain a top performing sport in the ACT.
Hockey is also reliant on the valuable contribution from the ACT Government and our numerous sponsors. I
thank these key stakeholders for their continued support of hockey as without them we would not be able
to deliver the programs and services we currently enjoy.
In conclusion, I record my sincere appreciation of all members of the Hockey ACT team who have
contributed to the record of achievement outlined in this report.

CEO Report
Well, what a year it has been for hockey in the ACT region. With terrific numbers participating in our sport
over both our Winter competition, Summer indoor and outdoor social competitions.
A special mention and huge thanks must go to everyone involved with the seventh annual Chris MacKinnon
Memorial Weekend – which this year raised $12,600 in support of the National Breast Cancer Foundation
(NBCF). This brings the contribution made to the NBCF to well over $100,000 in just seven years and sees
the Chris MacKinnon Memorial weekend become the largest community contributor to the NBCF.
Some numbers of note from the past 12 months:
• This winter season has seen 3,300 club members participate in the winter season;
• 422 participants registered in 10 Hookin2Hockey centres run across Canberra and Queanbeyan;
• An estimated 10,000 people participated in some form of hockey in 2018/19.
The Winter season culminated in the Canberra Labor Club Capital League 1 women’s finals being a case of
déjà-vu, with ANUWHC defeating TVHC in a shootout for the second time in as many years. In the Duncan’s
Plumbing Capital League 1 Men’s grand final we saw minor premiers Wests defeat Central to make it back
to back titles. A huge congratulations to all of our teams across the Men’s, Women’s, Boy’s and Girl’s
competitions who were successful and a huge thank you to all the members that participated in 2019.
Thank you for making hockey your sport of choice!
The Super Indoor competitions again showcased Canberra’s immense Indoor Hockey talent in 2019. The
women’s competition saw a dominant St. Patrick’s side defeat United 4 – 1 and in the men’s competition
Wests were able to claim both the indoor and outdoor title in one calendar year with their 5 – 3 defeat
over Central. It was great to see the indoor competitions continue to grow and congratulations to all the
teams and players for their support of indoor hockey in the ACT.
I would also like to acknowledge some wonderful achievements and milestones in the broader hockey
community over the past 15 months:
• Life member Max Hill celebrated his 100th birthday;
• Peter Funnell awarded an OAM for his 50+ years of service to hockey in the ACT;
• Jenny Feltham played her 500th first grade game and is also closing in on 1000 senior games;
• Janette Marskell played her 900th senior game;
• Margaret McCaskie played her 700th senior game;
• Emma Taylor, Tonina Staunton (both played over 50 AHL Games), Seyi Onitiri (121 AHL Games) played their 400th first grade games;
• Kate O’Keefe, Garry Backhus and Matt McLaughlin all played their 300th first grade games.
Our many talented officials have continued to gain national and international recognition for their efforts in
the past 12 months:

In late 2018 the Canberra Lakers and Strikers both made the semifinals at the final AHL event with the
Strikers finishing with the bronze and the Lakers in 4th. Irish import Lena Tice was awarded the AHL
Womens’ player of the tournament.
2019 saw the launch of the new Sultana Bran Hockey One League and the launch of Hockey ACT’s new
franchise, The Canberra Chill. It was great to have both sides competing under one banner in an exciting
new franchise-based league being televised across the country. The Canberra Chill women performed
strongly throughout the league but lost their semi-final in a heartbreaking penalty shootout. A very young
Canberra Chill men’s side performed gallantly finishing 5th and narrowly missing out on a semi-final berth.
Japanese import Shihori Oikawa was awarded Player of the Tournament for the women.
Once again ACT continued to perform strongly at the 2019 Indoor Nationals with 5 of the 10 teams making
it through to the semi-finals with the Open Men and the U21 Women finishing with silver medals.
On an individual front Taylor Thomson was recognized as the U21 Indoor player of the tournament, Aiden
Dooley U15 indoor player of the tournament.
Talei Forrest was awarded goal keeper of the tournament at the U21 Women’s outdoor National
Championships.
Andrew Charter has continued his stellar career with the Kookaburras. He is now the highest capped
Kookaburras goal keeper of all time. He represented Australia at the 2018 World Cup where the
Kookaburras claimed bronze. He was also a vital part of the side that recently claimed the first ever Pro
League title in the Netherlands.

Edwina Bone and Kalindi Commerford have had continued success with Hockeyroos. Both were selected
for the 2018 World Cup where Australia narrowly missed a medal finishing 4th. Both were also involved in
the first year of the Pro League Series where Australia finished second.
Hockey ACT continued to provide players into Australian programs at all levels from Masters through to
Futures and every level in between. To all of those players too numerous to mention congratulations on
obtaining the highest honour possible having been selected to represent your country.
On a special note I would like to take this opportunity to thank Hockey ACT President Peter Martens for his
8 years of service as the President of Hockey ACT. At the next AGM Peter’s time on the Hockey ACT Board
having served his maximum term. Peter has overseen many changes in his time. The addition of the Taylor
Field and the redevelopment of the Hockey Centre. On behalf of everyone at Hockey ACT I thank Peter for
his dedication to the association and to the sport of hockey.
It would be remiss also to not acknowledge the work of former CEO Gavin Hunt who finished with Hockey
ACT in June 2019. Gavin’s achievements are plentiful, you only need to walk into the facilities to see what
impact he has had. I would like to publicly acknowledge Gavin for his dedication over his 5 years with
Hockey ACT.
To the staff of Hockey ACT; the association is exceptionally lucky to have a small staff of such dedicated
individuals who are willing to go above and beyond in their workplace to make a difference and try and
better the sport. Your attitude and effort make you a pleasure to work with each and every day and thank
you for your contribution to the sport.
I would like to acknowledge and thank the ACT Government for their continued support of hockey in the
ACT through both the generous support of both the ACTAS program and Sport and Recreation services for
their continued funding support and advice.
I would also like to acknowledge the generous support of Hockey ACT’s sponsors: The Canberra Labor Club
who are the proud sponsor of our CL1 Women’s competition; Duncan’s Plumbing Services who are the
proud sponsor of our CL1 Men’s competitions; Capital Chemist as the sponsor of our Junior Competition;
FI-TA; Just Hockey; Stage and Screen Travel Services; Sportslink Travel; Canberra FM; Capital Trophies and
Sportswear.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge the dedication of the club committees, volunteers and the Board of
Hockey ACT who all work tirelessly for the betterment of the sport of Hockey in the ACT. These volunteers
and the hours of thankless effort are the cog that makes our sport go around. Nothing would be possible
without your efforts, and the sport thanks you.

Facilities Report
National Hockey Centre, Lyneham Ray Brown Indoor Hall
HACT were successful in receiving a government grant to upgrade the lights in the indoor hall to brand new
LED fittings. This project has enabled us to reach the required LUX levels provided by FIH for both training
and competition. During the project we were also able to re-configure the way the lights were wired to
enable the lighting of each half of the hall individually.
Outdoor Facilities
As part of the grant for the indoor lights we were also able to purchase a brand new Sports Champ pitch
sweeper. This machine will allow us to now do most of our pitch maintenance in house to save a
substantial amount of money on hiring external contractors to come in and clean our pitches on a regular
basis.
Plans were finally approved to extend the spectator mound on the Carter pitch and to install a new one
almost the entire length of the Powell field. Due to some logistical delays we were only able to complete
the extension of the Carter field mound with the hope of finishing the Powell field mound some time in
2020. This will allow for some much needed more viewing space for games and events on the Powell field.
Tuggeranong Artificial turf has been laid on both sides of the clubhouse to provide a much better environment for
spectators of both the Kjar and Taylor Fields.
A new bricked in BBQ has also been installed with the generous financial support of the ACT Men’s Masters
that has also helped improve the quality of the venue.
Finally, a few bugs have been sorted out in the lighting and Alarm upgrade that was completed at the end
of the 2018 season. The building is now able to be armed and disarmed via a keypad and the lighting
system is now able to be used from a remote desktop based at Lyneham.

Competition Report
Senior Competition Advisory Committee Report The Senior Competition Advisory Committee (SCAC) is responsible for ensuring the competition by-laws and senior competition rules are applied fairly and appropriately during the men’s and women’s Winter Competitions. In 2019, the Committee members were as follows:
• Sarah Derwort (ex-officio)
• Cameron Blagdon
• Richard Black
• Kyralee Bunt
• Deborah Mackenzie
• Andrew Fisher Continuing with operations as per previous years, the majority of the SCAC’s business was carried out through email correspondence, limiting the need for the committee to meet face to face. Supporting the Membership Coordinator to undertake their role autonomously, with appropriate advice and guidance provided by the SCAC when required. Season 2019 The 2019 season commenced on Saturday 30th March, culminating to Grand Final days on Saturday 21st September and Sunday 22nd of September. Across the senior competition, in men’s we continue to see a similar number of teams participating across the grades and in women’s we have seen the addition of two 14 team grades this season. The Capital League 1 Men’s and Women’s Grand Finals were again taken out by Wests and ANU Women’s Hockey Clubs respectively for the second year in a row, with a penalty shoot-out required for ANU to take the premiership in the Women’s competition. Owen Chivers (Wests) and Jessica Smith (ANU) took out the player of the match for their respective competitions.
*All 2019 senior outdoor grand final results can be found on pages 61 and 64.
Match Recording This year, Revolutionise continued to be used after the successful implementation in 2018. Revolutionise has now also been adopted nationally. This continues to be received well by all participants in the competition and supported the duties of the SCAC. Member clubs continue to use the systems to support their own administration. The support provided by HACT enhanced this. Application of the Rules The SCAC continues to play an important role in supporting HACT to ensure that the competition rules are fit for purpose and in ensuring their consistent application across the season, for all participating clubs. In the 2019 season, there was a focus on player grading and movement across the grades. New rules were introduced to address concerns raised by member clubs, while not perfect the intent was clear and with minor modifications for the 2020 season should address concerns raised. There was also focus on the management of junior players playing seniors. Compliance by member clubs to the competition rules made the important task of finals eligibility for players a fairly streamlined process this year.

Acknowledgements As the year has come to an end, it is important to acknowledge the volunteers from across the entire
community who without, the 2019 season would not have functioned. On behalf of the SCAC, I would like
to thank the countless volunteers and club officials for their contributions to the operations of their clubs,
but also for their cooperation in working with HACT to ensure their clubs are effectively represented both
on and off the field.
The SCAC continues to play an important role in supporting the application of HACT’s rules and strategic
vision and I would like to thank all members of the SCAC for their contributions in the 2019 season,
especially given the new grading rules added this year. I would also like to thank the staff of HACT for their
ongoing assistance and support of the SCAC in addition to their advocacy and promotion of hockey in
Canberra.
I would like to recognise the ongoing commitment that the HACT leadership team have had in the
development of hockey in the Canberra region and commend them on the continued drive to improve
facilities for both players and spectators. I look forward to seeing their vision being realised in the coming
seasons.

Junior Competition Advisory Committee Report The Junior Competitions Advisory Committee (JCAC) is responsible for ensuring the competition by-laws
and junior competition rules are applied fairly and appropriately during the girls and boys winter
competition. 2019 committee members were as follows:
• Shane Crossman
• Michael Young
• Jodi Bingley
• Andrew Sutton
• Michael Plenty
• Sarah Derwort (ex-officio)
2019 Season
The season commenced on May 3rd and concluded with grand finals being played on September 13th-15th, 2019. A number of measures were implemented which saw a minimum amount of clearances and issues related to the competition for the 2019 Season. The under 11’s competition continued to be played at the ANU Willows complex. The modified rules for this age group continues to be implemented across the boys and girls competition including combining the boys and girls competition. The regional carnivals such as the June Long Weekend carnival is still successful. The under 11’s competition continues to provide a good environment for learning basics and transition to the under 13 age group. HACT continues to struggle with juniors playing outside of their representative age groups, weakening these competitions. A restriction on players playing more than two age groups higher was implemented with only few discussed at the JCAC for clearances during the season, mostly around the final times. Clubs have accepted the rule and mostly welcome the outcomes. This issue continues to create concern within the JCAC which it will continue to monitor closely in 2019. The overall team numbers for this season remained about the same, with the usual variation in numbers within each age group.
Club Champions 2019
• Junior Girls Club Champion - Central Hockey Club
• Junior Boys Club Champion - St Patricks Hockey Club
Umpiring
The Umpiring Technical Committee again facilitated an expanded JOEY program. Nominations for JOEYS totalled 68 participants for the 2019 season. For this type of program to be successful clubs and experienced umpires must be prepared to assist. It is important that clubs take some responsibility for the development of umpires, for without suitable umpires the junior competition runs the risk of failing. The standard of umpiring in the junior competition has improved with many of the representative boys and girls taking on JOEY’s resulting in a number being asked to umpire at state level championships. The clubs have been very supportive of the JOEY’s program. Thank you to all the mentors who provided leadership and support. The benefit of the JOEY's program is now starting to be felt in the senior competition.
Hockey ACT Annual Report – Oct 2018 to Dec 2019

Participation
Participation is always is a major concern for the JCAC. It is great to see some clubs working hard on their junior program and either maintaining close to their numbers each year or increasing. The concern is the other clubs continue to struggle with numbers or who have lost their juniors altogether. This year saw a number of clubs combine to enter teams which delivered successful results. A strong junior competition will lead to a strong senior competition and all clubs need to recruit and attract juniors to the sport for this to happen. There were some issues within the season that needed to be dealt with and were managed effectively through the clearance review process. Those particularly in regards to players playing between age groups, of which The JCAC will need to continue to monitor this going forward.
Acknowledgements
My thanks to all committee members for their contribution, advice and opinions all of which help to ensure that the competition ran smoothly throughout the season. Thanks to James Tough who supervised the under 11 competitions at the Willows. Special thanks to HACT staff, especially Sarah Derwort in her first year of looking after the competition for their assistance. Thanks to all the clubs, coaches, managers, parents, umpires and the players who strive to make ACT junior hockey, a successful competition. Indoor Competition Advisory Committee Report The Indoor Competition Advisory Committee (ICAC) is responsible for ensuring the competition
bylaws and indoor competition rules are applied fairly and appropriately during all indoor
competitions, both senior and junior. 2018/19 committee members were as follows:
• Sarah Derwort (ex-officio)
• Sean Willis(ex-officio)
• Maryanne Ellem
• Andrew Sutton

2018/19 Season
This year we again utilised the National Hockey Centre, Melrose High School and Mount Stromlo High
School for indoor competitions. HACT have been exploring the acquisition of new boards for the
National Hockey Centre with these expected to arrive for the 2019/20 indoor season.
It was pleasing to see more teams participating in the senior competitions from previous seasons Men
up 1 team from 13 to 14, Women’s 38 up from 35; while unfortunately the junior competitions saw
decreases in numbers Boys 22 teams down from 24 and Girls 38 teams down from 45. This will
remain a focus of the ICAC in conjunction with the HACT Development Officer to work towards
regaining participants in indoor hockey.
In January 2019 Hockey Australia held the third Festival of Indoor Hockey in Goulburn, a month long
session of all age groups National Indoor Championships. The location helped keep costs to a
minimum for HACT participation.
Highlights from the National Indoor Tournament – 2019
• U13s boys and girls both finished 6th in their National Indoor Competitions
• U15s were strong competitors with the boys finishing 4th and the girls finishing 6th overall
• Aiden Dooley was named Player of the Tournament at the U15 National Indoor
Championships
• U18s had great performances with the girls finishing 4th and the boys finishing 5th in their
competitions
• U21s both exceeded expectations with the girls finishing 2nd (Silver) and boys finishing 4th
• Taylor Thompson was named Player of the Tournament at the U21 National Indoor
Championship
• Open ACT Men finished their campaign with a silver medal (2nd) and the Open Women
finished up 5th overall.

Umpiring
Umpiring continues to be an area that needs improvement in future years. An improved partnership
between the ICAC and the Umpire and Technical Committee (UTC) would allow for greater
development of umpires throughout the competitions. There was another attempt to introduce a
JOEY program similar to the one in place for the outdoor season, but again the lack of mentors
ultimately saw this not get off the ground, leaving Clubs to provide umpires, with mixed results.
The Super Indoor competition saw an increased number of umpires participating in the competition
with many of these umpires also representing HACT at various national championships as both
umpires and umpire managers.

Disciplinary Report The members of the Tribunal Panel in 2019 were as follows:
• Deborah Mackenzie (Chair)
• Will Mueller
• Ron Jackson
• Rebecca Platen
• John MacKinnon
• Mark Unwin
• Neil Gaughan
• Michelle Vernon HACT continued to operate under the Disciplinary Tribunal Rules and Procedures, Disciplinary Guidelines and complaint procedures that were implemented for the 2017 Season. Since the introduction of these procedures, there has been increased understanding of the process for complaints and tribunal procedures. Deb Mackenzie was the Chair of the Disciplinary Tribunal for the 2018/2019 period and HACT would like to thank her for all her hard work and effort throughout the year. The Tribunal heard three matters throughout the course of the year, a slight increase from the previous year. Under alternate resolution procedures (early guilty plea), the HACT CEO and his delegates were able to adjudicate on thirteen further matters that were received under complaints and red cards procedures. The majority of the incidents reported were for verbal abuse of players, umpires and technical officials. Deborah Mackenzie Chair, Disciplinary Tribunal

Umpire and Technical Committee Report The Umpiring and Technical Committee (UTC) for 2019 comprised:
Mark McElligott (chair) Graham (Joe) Henstock Emily Carroll Craig Johnston Wilma Baines Stirling Sharpe (HACT – ex officio)
Key Activities
Officiating Development Plan – to begin the 2019 season the UTC presented the Officiating
Development Plan to senior competition umpires. A season launch was combined with the annual
pre-season briefing and this was attended by approximately 50 umpires and technical officials. A pizza
dinner was provided.
HockeyEd Theory Seminars – in 2019 the UTC offered several Level 1 Umpire courses. Only two of
these proceeded due to a severe lack of uptake on all offerings. A Level 1 Technical Official course was
well attended as this was run alongside an Altius RT crash course/refresher (this is the platform used
for HA events including Hockey One). A Level 1 Umpire Coach course was completed by JOEY mentors
and some senior umpires. The UTC did not present a Level 2 Umpire course this year.
Visiting Senior Official – For the 2019 season it was decided that Irene Clelland would be the visiting
senior umpire however Irene withdrew due to increasing work commitments. At this time, it was
decided to expand this program beyond the confines of hockey. The UTC agreed that five-time ICC
umpire of the year and current leadership coach – Simon Taufel – would present a two-part series to
our umpires and coaches. This came at a great expense to the UTC – approximately $2400 – and was
not well attended. The UTC is keen to engage Simon and other high-ranking officials in other sports
but will try different strategies to engage our local umpires.
Umpire Coaching and Mentoring – No UTC appointment was made in 2019 to the High-Performance
Umpire Coach position, with these duties being shared across senior umpires. The UTC maintained
progress on provision of regular umpire coaching in field hockey at CL1, CL2, and SL1 level (and lower
senior grades and juniors where requested). A significantly higher level of feedback for umpires was
maintained throughout the season. The UTC is extremely grateful to all who made themselves
available to assist. The growing willingness of umpires to seek each other out to discuss issues and
approaches to better umpiring is pleasing to see.
Hockey ACT JOEY Program - The JOEYS program (junior development) ran again in 2019. The U13/1
and U13/2 competitions for both boys and girls were officiated by two JOEY umpires and two on-field
mentors. The U15/1 and U18/1 competitions for both boys and girls were officiated by two JOEY
umpires and one off field mentor. The program was administered by Kirsty Reiter and Nicole Dos
Marcos and the UTC would like to express their deep gratitude for the efforts of both ladies
throughout the year. In total 68 junior umpires participated in the program for 2019. This number is
slightly below 2018.
Technical Officials -the UTC extended the appointment a match Technical Official to each CL1, CL2
and SL1 match in 2019. This highlighted the need for a greater number of qualified TOs to spread the
workload, and also the need to consider appointing at least one club person to assist until such time
as two qualified TOs are available for each match. Clock stopping/restarting/ handling suspensions
and bench management can overload one official.

ACT Umpires at National or International Events
ACT Umpires and Technical Officials were appointed to a number of national championships and
international events during 2019. A list of completed appointments follows on the next page.
In closing, the UTC would like to congratulate all ACT umpiring and technical officials appointed to
international fixtures, Hockey One, national championships, regional championships, country
championships and other major fixtures. In addition, the UTC thanks the umpires that turn up to all
Hockey ACT fixtures, both senior and junior
I will be stepping down from the position of Chair in 2020 and on behalf of myself and the hockey
community I would like to thank members of the UTC for their support and hard work throughout the
year.

The 2018/19 Summer Twilight competitions were again well supported by both returning members
and new participants. There was a drop in overall participation for the pre-Christmas. However, HACT
continued to operate J-Ball. Following a successful year of operation with HACT the overall
participation numbers for post-Christmas numbers grew.
J-Ball is a product aimed at participants that have not played the game previously. J-Ball aims to
provide a social product that does not require equipment to be purchased or a prior knowledge of
rules, thus reducing the barriers to participation. The game is also played on a smaller field with the
ball kept within the field of play by small barriers. This allows for continuous play but still can be
enjoyed by people with levels of fitness.

Hockey ACT Participation & Game Development Programs
Hockey ACT’s Participation and Game Development space greatly improved and expanded
throughout 2019. We experienced a steady and substantial increase in schools visited, community
events attended and holiday clinic participants throughout the year.
The greatest growth seen in 2019 was in the Hockey ACT schools program. In 2018, 1628 students
experienced hockey in their schools, some for first time. In 2019, this figure grew by over 200%, with
Hockey ACT’s Development Team delivering sessions at 29 schools, providing 3452 students with a
taste of the sport.
Our clubs’ Hookin2Hockey offerings remained steady, with equal year-on-year registrations across our
9 centers in Winter 2018 & 2019. Notable mentions to United with the expansion into their new
catchment of the Weston and Woden area, running sessions in Pearce throughout the winter season.
And Old Canberrans’ returning to its roots; moving from the Deakin playing fields to the Telopea Park
School grounds, to great success. Furthermore, two exciting Hookin2Hockey Carnivals were
successfully held during the year, bringing together all of the participants for a fun day of games and
skills.
This past year also saw the addition of one more Holiday Participation Skills Clinic, with an October
Indoor Clinic in 2019. It was taken up well by the Hockey ACT community along with all other clinics,
as seen by the registration numbers: April ‘19 Outdoor Skills Clinic (51 participants), July ‘19 Outdoor
Skills Clinic (37 participants) and October ’19 Indoor Skills Clinic (45 participants). Hockey ACT will look
to continue and expand the participation-based clinics, in a bid to bring in more keen participants,
both well-versed in hockey and those new to the game.
On the social scene, Urban Rec’s J-Ball continued along well, with consistent sessions throughout the
year. Averaging 6-8 teams per season, their numbers remained steady with no competition
cancellations due to low numbers.
All in all, 2019 was a strong year, and while great strides forward were made, Hockey ACT are always
looking for ways to expand our offerings and present hockey to the wider community. The
Participation and Game Development Team at Hockey ACT would like to send our thanks to all
volunteers, coaches, managers, club officials, administrators and schools that have assisted us in
2019, and we look forward to working with you all again to make 2020 bigger and better!

Masters Reports
ACT Men’s Masters Report ACT Masters Hockey again recorded a successful year, continuing the same processes that have seen
us mature as an association over recent years. We are making significant progress towards our goal
of providing competition to older players who want to stay involved in the sport.
Our Monday night competition is close the capacity of the fields available, and our representative
teams provide our local players the opportunity to play at the highest level in their age group. It is
particularly gratifying to see players from the younger age groups keen to extend their involvement in
our sport and strive for Australian age based selection.
Administration
ACT Masters Hockey Inc is an incorporated association, administered by a Committee meeting
monthly to oversee our activities The AGM was held on 23 March 2019, electing the following
Committee 2019-20.
• President: Leo Clarke
• Vice President: Doug Dawson
• Secretary: Bob Parkes
• Treasurer: Warwick Bray
• Committee Members: Craig Johnston, Morris Trevethan, Derek Gawthorne, Clive Sear, Tony
Mumberson, John Michael, Ron Jackson, Mark McElligott, Ian Smith.
• Long-time Treasurer, Warwick Bray was awarded Life Membership of our Association at the
meeting.
Competition
The committee’s most significant operation is the Monday Night Masters competition, a 40 week
season divided into four quarters. The competition is well supported by our 394 members. While
the competition is arranged by the Men’s Masters, the competition welcomes both men and
women from Canberra and surrounding districts. In 2019 there were 22 teams participating in the
first quarter, 14 in quarters two and four, while the third quarter attracted 12 teams.
A key event in the Masters calendar was the Canberra Cup, this year supported by Hockey ACT
and Pick-up-Sticks. It is run over two days in March and is an important introduction to our culture
with teams from the Macarthur, Wagga, Goulburn and ACT Associations participating. ACT Gold
took out the Division 1 competition with Macarthur narrowly taking the second division from
Canberra Blue.
The Happy Hour of Hockey, played on Thursday afternoons enjoyed its third year of operation.
Each week a group of mostly retired people meet for an hour of social hockey followed by a
casual get together. The afternoon aims to keep players involved who have invested a lot of their
life in hockey. ACT Masters Hockey is grateful to Hockey ACT for their support of this program.
In 2019 we held our third charity event, appropriately called “LifeNight”. The night provides an
opportunity for both current and former players to get together socially and to contribute to local
charity organisations. This year we also included some hockey, with a mini-carnival between
Northsiders, Southsiders and the Outsiders competing for “Keeper of the Flame” Trophy. The
trophy is named in honour of Jack Thompson, a life member who was instrumental in getting

Masters Hockey in Canberra off the ground. Old-timers remember the early days on the “beach”,
where games were followed by socializing around Jack’s flaming 44 gallon drum. We were proud
to have Jack’s family with us to present the Trophy to Northside. Importantly, three local charities
involved with men’s health received $600 each from the proceeds of the night.
Carnivals and Championships
NSW State Championships
Goulburn Masters have long been a part of the ACT Masters competition. Players from our
competition participate in age championship carnivals at a state level under the leadership of our
friends from Goulburn. This year players contested the over 40, 45, 50, 55 and 65’s age groups.
Australian Men’s’ Masters Hockey Championships 2019
The tournament was played over two weeks in Bunbury and Busselton in West Australia. The ACT
nominated seven teams in the following divisions: Over 35’s, 45’s, 55’s, 60’s div 1, and 60’s div 2,
65’s and 70’s.
All teams performed creditably without bringing home the trophies. The ACT continues to
nominate Masters teams well beyond our population size. A large part of that can be directly
attributed to the band of administrators, committee workers and team managers that make the
championships happen.
The following players were selected to represent Australia in the 2020 World Cup:

The ACT Women’s Masters Committee would like to thank all players, Officials, Coaches, Managers, non-officiating volunteers and Hockey ACT. It is due to the support and commitment from all the above parties that we have the ability to host and attend the three above-mentioned events each year. Lastly, thank you to the ACT Women’s Masters Committee and Sub-committees for all the work they do behind the scenes. It would not be possible to hold any of these events without their hard work and dedication.

Hockey One Canberra Chill
The Sultana Bran Hockey One League is Australia’s new national league hockey, with the introduction
of the Canberra Chill – the ACT’s newest franchise. The Lakers and Strikers have been merged to form
one large male and female squad playing under one team name. All teams in the competition hosted
at least three home games with finals being determined by the highest finishing female team. Each
team were only able to select 14 players for each round game, limiting the amount of games
accumulated by the players.
Canberra Chill - Men
The 2019 Canberra Chill Men attempted built on their positive performances in 2018 to move into the
new Hockey One League. Three Japanese imports (including two returning athletes) boosted the team
along with two debutants. The boys had a tough start to the season but finished strong to finish just

Canberra Chill - Women
The 2019 Canberra Chill Women were looking to build on their successful third place finish in 2018 to
move into the Hockey One League with momentum. The Women’s team had nine debutants that all
played at least one game in the tournament showing the depth of the squad, as well as having three
Japanese imports and the return of our British import. The Canberra Chill Women played their finest
hockey in front of a home crowd where they won all three games. The women finished fourth which
gave them a finals birth, where they lost to HC Melbourne in shoot-outs. Sakiyo Asano (Japanese
Import) was named Player of the Tournament.

Brophy Medal History
This award was created in 1961 and named in honour of the Association’s long serving President Mr
James Brophy. Jim Brophy first became involved in hockey in the early 1940’s and served as President
of the ACT Hockey Association from 1944 to 1964. It is interesting to note that Jim Brophy never
played hockey and was never affiliated with any hockey club, but wrote the game reports each
Saturday for the Canberra Times right up until his death in 1969.
The Brophy Medal is awarded to the player who is the competition’s best and fairest with points
awarded on a 5, 3, 1 system for best and fairest on field at the end of each game.

McKay Medal History
This award was instituted in 1992 and named after Heather McKay (nee Blundell). Heather was born
in Queanbeyan and began playing hockey at a young age with her sisters. She then took up squash to
keep fit for hockey. She was a member of the formidable women’s first grade team, the Evergreens
who won 10 premierships from 1955-1967. She was regarded as one of the greatest female player’s
in the history of Squash, and possibly Australia's greatest-ever sportswoman. She was undefeated in
competitive squash matches between 1962 and 1981 and won the British Women’s Squash
Championship a record 16 times. In addition to her National representative career in Squash, she was
selected as a member of the Australian Women's Hockey Team in 1967 and 1971 and maintains her
competitive spirit these days on the tennis court.
The McKay Medal is awarded to the player who is the competition’s best and fairest. Points are
awarded based on a 5, 3, 1 system for best and fairest on field at the end of each game.

Financial Statements
Directors Report
The members of the Board submit to you the attached extract from the consolidated financial accounts.
The complete audited financial statements are available, upon request, from the Hockey Office.
At the AGM in February 2019 members of the Association agreed to change the financial year from
September to December – the rationale being that the altered financial year better meets the
Association’s budget and reporting needs. For the initial year (this one) this necessitated a financial year
representing 15 months. Future accounts will revert to the 12-month calendar year (January-December).
Principal activity
The principal activity of the Association during the year was to operate and promote the sport of hockey.
Review and results of operations
Team numbers, both outdoor and indoor, were in line with past figures. Club fees and field hire rates
were again kept at 2014/15 levels.
The Association had a trading deficit from ordinary activities, of $665,000 (2018 deficit $275,000). Much
of the increased deficit can be attributed to the additional 3 months of expenses (wages, depreciation,
utilities, etc) against a traditional lower revenue period.
State of affairs
Hockey ACT had a net asset position of $8.3 million at 31 December 2019 (2018: $8.9 million).
Events subsequent to reporting date
No material events occurred after the reporting period.
Directors’ interests
Since the beginning of the financial period, no director has received or become entitled to receive a
benefit, by reason of a contract made by the Association or a related corporation with the director, or
with a firm of which they are a member, or with a company in which they have a substantial financial
interest.
Indemnification and insurance of officers and auditors
Since the beginning of the financial period, the Association has not indemnified or made a relevant
agreement indemnifying against a liability any person who is or has been an officer or auditor of the
Association.
