On behalf of the nearly 13,000 physicians, nurses and staff at Meridian Health, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your donation to our health care system during this past year. Your support is critical to our success, and it’s important to us that you know the impact your philanthropy has on Meridian Health. In addition to recognizing our donors, we hope you will gain some valuable insight from this publication on how each and every dollar we raised in 2014 was put to work to advance exceptional care within the communities we serve.

Thanks to your generosity, the Meridian Health Affiliated Foundations raised nearly $14 million in 2014. With your investment we completed three successful campaigns, supporting the new emergency departments at both Ocean Medical Center and Southern Ocean Medical Center, as well as a campaign to support cardiac services and pediatrics at Jersey Shore University Medical Center and K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital.

These are prime examples of your steadfast commitment to the health of our community and we thank you. In order to continue to provide our region with the best health care experience, a plan was launched in 2014 to invest $128 million to transform the way we treat cancer at Meridian Health. This plan will entail an unprecedented comprehensive fundraising campaign to support our clinical team, along with system-wide technology and facility upgrades to create a Cancer Care network, while also strengthening service lines at all hospitals. We are both excited and honored to begin this life-changing project.

2014 brought news that Meridian Health will grow beyond Monmouth and Ocean counties, by first merging with Raritan Bay Medical Center and then with Hackensack University Health Network. These partnerships will create one, innovative, integrated health care system focused on delivering the very best clinical care to the patients we serve at the most appropriate cost. Through these new relationships, our leadership is committed to implementing innovative models of care, advancing education and research, and transforming health care delivery to thrive in the evolving environment.

As Meridian grows to meet tomorrow’s needs and expectations, we are acutely aware that these advancements and developments would not be possible without the extraordinary support we receive from you, our donors. Your investment has a direct impact on the lives of so many and our success is credited to the generous spirit of our extended Meridian family.

It is a privilege to express my sincere thanks for your continued commitment.

Sincerely,

Joseph E. Stampe President Meridian Health Affiliated Foundations

MONEYINMOTIONWhat did you support? In 2014, Meridian’s Health System saw tremendous growth. With the help of our family of donors, Meridian Health Affiliated Foundations completed three very successful campaigns dedicated to bringing the best health care experience to the patients we serve. Two new emergency departments, growth in cardiac services, advances in pediatrics, state of the art medical equipment and dependable hospice care were all major focal points throughout the year. Though a large portion of funds was dedicated to these bigger projects, the following represents the true breadth of your generosity.

Foundation Board Leads The Next Step Campaign Over Goal

Scholarship Funded by Jersey Shore Nurse

Jersey Shore Receives $300,000 Gift from Howard Corlies Estate

Throughout his lifetime, Mr. Corlies was an active volunteer leader and donor to the Raleigh Fitkin-Paul Morgan Memorial Hospital in Neptune, New Jersey (subsequently renamed Jersey Shore University Medical Center), serving as both the president of the Board of Governors and chairman of the Executive Committee from 1936 to 1943. He made substantial gifts to support the growth of the hospital, and encouraged others to do so as well.

Mr. Corlies’ last tribute to Jersey Shore, facilitated through a family trust, was dedicated in the 1950s. As a provision in his will, Mr. Corlies, who died on September 14, 1958, provided for his two grandnephews and grandniece for the duration of their lives through a Testamentary Charitable Remainder Trust. When his last grandnephew, Corlies Clayburgh, died in 2014, the trust bequeathed $300,000 to Jersey Shore.

Jersey Shore University Medical Center Foundation Board Chairman Peter Cancro and his wife, Tatiana

Howard Corlies contributed to the early growth of Jersey Shore University Medical Center in the 1930s

The Jersey Shore University Medical Center Foundation Board of Trustees showed overwhelming support for The Next Step Campaign. The 2014 efforts were led by Peter Cancro, chairman of the Foundation Board and founder/CEO of the Jersey Mike’s Franchise Systems, Inc. Peter made a second generous commitment of $500,000 to continue his support of the next steps in Jersey Shore’s future. The Next Step Campaign provided philanthropic dollars for the recent expansion at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, as well as the new CardioVascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) that opened in early 2014. We thank Peter and the entire board for their tremendous commitment to the health of our community. With their leadership, we were able to surpass the $11 million fundraising goal of this important campaign.

Providing an opportunity for fellow nurses at Jersey Shore University Medical Center to enhance and advance their education is a cause near and dear to Quyen Tran’s heart. She became a cardiac nurse later in life and truly believes in giving back for the opportunity to help others as a registered nurse at Jersey Shore for the past decade. Quyen made a gift in 2014 to establish the Golden Rule Nursing Scholarship. This gift will support other nurses new to the field

who demonstrate an exceptional standard of patient care. In addition to a bequest to support the scholarship fund into the future, Quyen is also making annual gifts to ensure that a scholarship will be given out each year.

Quyen Tran, a nurse at Jersey Shore University Medical Center

Jersey Shore University Medical Center received a $300,000 gift in 2014 from the trust of the late Howard Corlies (1883-1958), of Spring Lake, New Jersey. The gift honors the memory of Mr. Corlies, a prominent Monmouth County resident who faithfully served the hospital and its mission to provide the best health care experience for the Jersey Shore community.

Steven G. Littleson, FACHE, executive vice president of Meridian Health, said, “Howard Corlies played an incredibly important role in the evolution of what is today known as Jersey Shore University Medical Center. The hospital’s location on Corlies Avenue reminds us every day of the significance of the historic Corlies family name, and Howard Corlies’ generous gift reflects just how much he cared for the health and future of our community.”

This painting of the late Howard Corlies still hangs in the administration offices at Jersey Shore University Medical Center

Jersey Shore University Medical Center unveiled the new CardioVascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) – a twelve-bed critical care unit providing post-operative care for cardiac surgery patients, including those who receive traditional open heart surgery and newer, complex interventional cardiovascular procedures.

their condition. Patients rest in comfortable, pressure-reducing mattresses and each private room is equipped with a spacious family seating area. Additionally, the dedicated CVICU lounge, funded through donor support

from the Women’s Heart Fund, is a welcoming and comfortable respite for families and guests.

The CVICU was designed to address all the needs of patients undergoing new, minimally invasive technologies that continue to revolutionize cardiac care, including Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), a procedure for heart failure patients with limited alternatives, and Impella – a heart pump that provides immediate circulatory support for critical patients.

“This is an exciting time for the Meridian CardioVascular Network and Jersey Shore,” notes Richard Neibart, M.D., chief of Cardiac Surgery at Jersey Shore. “With the new CVICU, we continue to set our goals higher, ensuring that our patients and the community have access to the very best heart care, right here at Jersey Shore.”

More than $250,000 was raised during Jersey Shore University Medical Center’s 17th Annual Sweetheart Ball, held last February at Ocean Place Resort & Spa in Long Branch. The event attracted nearly 450 attendees and proceeds were designated to Jersey Shore’s robust oncology research, treatment and support services, keeping the best cancer care close to home.

The ball was chaired by Ann Nahum, R.N. & Ken Nahum, D.O., Phil & Marilyn Perricone, and John & Dawn Reinhardt. Eric and Lori Kirsch were presented with the William C. Black Award of Hope for generous and steadfast support of Jersey Shore and Meridian Health.

31st Annual Sports Classic Golf Tournament Raises $280,000

On July 7, the Jersey Shore University Medical Center Foundation hosted its 31st annual Sports Classic Golf Tournament with 216 golfers and raised $280,000 in support of Jersey Shore’s cardiovascular programs. Jersey Shore, part of the Meridian Cardiovascular Network, offers the only cardiac surgery program in Monmouth and Ocean counties and has consistently achieved success rates among the nation’s best. The event committee is led by chair Peter Cancro, founder and

owner of Jersey Mike’s Franchise Systems, Inc., which is also one of the Event Sponsors.

Due to the outing’s popularity, two private courses – Deal Golf & Country Club and Hollywood Golf Club – simultaneously hosted the golfers. The tournament included a cocktail and awards reception, remarks from chief of cardiology, Dawn Calderon, D.O. and grateful patient, Kristen Filipowicz and a live and silent auction.

In appreciation of outstanding care provided to friends and family members, Cedar Village at Ocean, located in Ocean Township, walked for Jersey Shore University Medical Center again in 2014. For the past five years, this generous group of community members dedicated their Breast Cancer Walk proceeds to aid the fight against breast cancer in our region, generously choosing

Jersey Shore as the benefactor of their support and hard work. We thank Cedar Village at Ocean for their philanthropic commitment. IfyouareamemberofacommunityorganizationthatisinterestedinsupportingJerseyShoreUniversityMedicalCenter,[email protected].

From 2009 to 2013, the number of births at Jersey Shore increased by 18%. During the same time period, the NICU volume increased 42%, making both of these expansion projects necessary to provide programs and services close to home for the health of our region.

Toy Drive Raises Funds and Holiday SpiritMany of our region’s smallest patients receive care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital

Providing the best health care experience for our youngest patients and their families is the priority for the team at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

To provide the most advanced, compassionate care from birth, we are focused this year on expanding our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and our maternity unit. Construction will begin on a new 13 bassinet unit featuring nine private rooms and two twin rooms for a total neonatal intensive care capacity of 34 bassinets. Plans are also in the works to increase maternity by nine rooms.

Teen’s Spirit Inspires GiftAs a brave cancer patient, teenager Ezra Abraham faced his fears and transcended his illness by thinking of ways to help others his age with cancer. By embracing the philosophy of living every day to its fullest, Ezra truly embodied every meaning of the word “life”.

In this inspiring spirit, the Ezra Abraham to Life Foundation made a generous gift to renovate the teen lounge at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital. The finished product was enjoyed by many patients when it opened last year, providing a much needed space for teens and their visiting friends to enjoy some of the comforts of home while at the hospital.

Jersey Mike’s Continues Tradition of Giving Back

Jersey Mike’s Subs Monmouth and Ocean County Franchise Owners once again donated the proceeds of their annual Month of Giving in March 2014 to K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital.

The event raised over $50,000 which has been designated to the St. Nicholas Pediatric Patient Comfort Fund. Thanks to this contribution, the children’s hospital team is able to provide the little extras that our patients and their family members might need when they are staying with us. From cab fare to toothbrushes, pajamas or a stuffed animal, these items are used to help make their stay a little easier. We are truly grateful for the loyal philanthropic support of Jersey Mike’s Franchise Systems, Inc.

Expansion Supported by Family Foundation

Keeping their annual tradition, David and Christine Indursky of Freehold opened their home again to host a successful toy drive for patients at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital. The reception brought in an overwhelming amount of toys for children of all ages, along with a healthy dose of holiday spirit. In addition to providing toys, guests made monetary donations to support specific hospital needs from a “Giving Tree” during the event. The Giving Tree portion of the event brought in close to $13,000, more than double the amount from the year before.

After more than a decade of loyal support to numerous Meridian Health hospitals and programs, Jersey Shore University Medical Center Foundation would like to thank the Morris and Clara Weshnak Family Foundation for its most recent gift. In 2014, this generous family foundation invested in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) expansion project at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital.

We sincerely thank the Federation and its membership for being everyday heroes by making the health of our patients their mission.

Part of Our History, Supporting Our Future...

The Goldblatt Family

As a member of the Jersey Shore University Medical Center Foundation Board of Trustees and the Women’s Philanthropic Fund, Karen Goldblatt has made a generous investment in the future of the health of her community.

However, her most recent generous gift in support of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital was motivated by more than her history with Meridian Health.

“I am a proud grandma to three beautiful children, two of which were born at Jersey Shore,” Karen said. “I am always mindful of the importance of excellent health care and now, as a grandmother, it is more important than ever to me that the best health care is available for all children close to home when they need it most.”

Child Life team member April Slowenski uses the puppet to put a child at ease The patient puppet machine is used to demonstrate procedures like an MRI to make it less frightening for children

Thanks to the generous support of the George Link Jr. Charitable Trust, the K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital Child Life Program continues to grow and meet the needs of hospitalized children and

their families. Most recently, these funds were used to purchase a patient puppet machine to help children and their families understand testing, surgeries and other medical procedures.

“Our patient puppet ‘Monte’ is a great new addition to the Child Life Team. Monte helps our patients to explore the medical procedures and treatments that they are undergoing in a non-threatening, child friendly way during a medical play session with their Child Life Specialist. Monte has multiple adaptions, including removable tonsils, feeding tube access, breathing tube access and EEG leads,” said Sara Auerbach, BA, CCLS, CPMT, Certified Child Life Specialist at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital.

known as Michael’s Feat, is a nonprofit named in memory of Michael Gerard Puharic, born on July 29, 2000. Michael battled a serious health crisis for 83 hours, and passed away on August 1, 2000. Over the past 15 years Michael’s Feat has partnered with K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital to support its NICU families.

“Our son Michael’s legacy lives on and serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration to countless other parents like us, dealing with seriously ill newborns. We know he is with us each day, continuing

to touch hundreds of lives and helping to drive the spirit that is Michael’s Feat,” said Adam and Dana Puharic, Michael’s parents.

K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital at Jersey Shore University Medical Center is pleased to announce a gift that will create the Michael’s Feat Family room. A ‘living room away from home’ for parents of newborns, the Michael’s Feat Family Room will be located near the hospital’s soon to be expanded Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and will offer parents, grandparents and other family members a calm, peaceful setting in which to take a break and relax.

Superhero Soiree Supports K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital Supportive Community Rallies Behind K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital

Inspired by the everyday heroes at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital – including kids, families and caregivers – the 2014 Superhero Soiree was a fun evening with a serious mission. Generously sponsored by Ralph Clayton & Sons and QualCare, Inc., the event raised more than $125,000 to support pediatric patient care and attracted over 215 guests to the Oyster Point Hotel in Red Bank.

At the event, local singing sensation Jacquie Lee, from NBC’s television program The Voice, received K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital’s inaugural Hometown Hero Award – a fitting accolade for the 16 year-old pop star from Colts Neck, NJ who motivates kids everywhere to follow their dreams.

“My community has given me so much support over the years, and it means a lot to me to return that support whenever I have the opportunity. It was an honor to take part in an evening that will further enhance the incredible care that K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital delivers to pediatric patients every day,” says Jacquie Lee.

Foundation Board of Trustees

Thank you to the Guild of Ocean Medical Center and The Ocean Medical Center Association, our two auxiliary groups, for continuing a legacy of significant philanthropy.

The Guild of Ocean Medical Center’s generous commitment continued throughout 2014. In addition to support of the new Emergency Department, the Guild also funded a neoBLUE® LED Phototherapy System for newborns at the Hospital. A special thank you to Susan Scherler, chair of the Guild, and all of its members for making a substantial impact.

Ocean Medical Center Foundation is proud to have the Lucas family join its circle of donors, with their significant support of its Emergency Services campaign. Now third-generation seasonal residents of Bay Head/Mantoloking, they appreciate having top-rate medical care close to home as they enjoy time in the area that has been a respite for their family for so long. George and Patty Lucas, as well as their son Russell and daughter-in-law Kristina, committed a generous family gift in recognition of Ocean Medical Center’s ability to deliver excellent care. George stated, “I am proud to become

involved with the hospital and champion its many services that benefit the entire area, including the communities so dear to us.”

The family not only provided generous financial support in 2014, but the foundation board of trustees also welcomed Russ as a member. “Given that my family has been established in the area for generations, I look forward to championing Ocean Medical Center’s services to family friends and helping to attract the support that keeps it as a strong center for care,” Russ said.

Thank you to long-time Ocean Medical Center supporters Ruth & George Harms of Brielle and their entire family for continuing their philanthropic investment in 2014.

To supplement a lead campaign gift made in 2013, the Harms family made another generous contribution last year in support of the Hirair and Anna Hovnanian Emergency Care Center at Ocean Medical Center, a valuable resource for their community.

Helps Ocean Medical Center Grow and Thrive

Bud Mayo is a generous, annual donor and consistent champion for Ocean Medical Center’s top-rate care. A resident of Bay Point Harbour, Bud and his wife Sudy can attest to the importance of a strong medical center close to home. “My family uses Ocean Medical Center’s myriad services, as have several of my dear friends in recent years, and the quality of care is very impressive,” says Bud.

After having helped lead the board through the enormously successful capital campaign for the Hirair and Anna Hovnanian Emergency Care Center, Bud has set his sights on attracting broad and deep attention for new initiatives that will further Ocean Medical Center’s ability to deliver the best care in the area.

Bud’s background provides him with plenty of insight into strategic development. A lifelong entrepreneur and former chairman of the Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown, he asserts that the same principle holds true across his endeavors. “If you deliver a top-quality experience, people will appreciate the effort and then advocate for your services.” As both a generous supporter and foundation trustee, Bud is in a unique position to help Ocean Medical Center’s foundation grow and thrive.

Scholarship Funds Benefit Ocean’s Nurses

Thanks to donor support, scholarships continued to benefit the education and development of the nursing staff at Ocean Medical Center in 2014.

The Kellogg Award for Nursing Excellence was once again awarded in 2014 along with the Barbara Forfar Nursing Scholarship. Named after Elizabeth I. Kellogg, a staunch supporter of nurses, the prestigious Kellogg scholarship has recognized professionalism and compassion since 1990 when it was set up in memory of Mrs. Kellogg by her generous family.

The Forfar Nursing Scholarship has been awarded for the past four years. Barbara Forfar was dedicated to the nursing profession for 44 years, with all but three years of her service associated with the Ocean Medical Center or its predecessor hospitals.

“Community support is an integral part of what makes Ocean Medical Center so special. In addition to donors who support facilities, programs and technologies, we are incredibly grateful for those individuals who support nursing scholarships. They are investing in the front line caregivers who are dedicated to their profession and are looking to further expand their expertise and care to the community,” said Regina Foley, newly-appointed Chief Operating Officer, Bayshore Community Hospital (former Vice President of Operations and Chief Nursing Executive at Ocean Medical Center).

A Rewarding Investment

Over the years, longtime Ocean Medical Center donor Betty Hurley has provided philanthropic support to her hospital of choice in a number of ways. The latest annuity, set up by Betty in 2014, honors Michael, and her family, in the new Hirair and Anna Hovnanian Emergency Care Center.

Students Make a Difference through School Fundraiser

Students from McKinley Avenue Elementary on Make a Difference Day

We extend a big thank you to all of the McKinley Avenue Elementary School families for choosing Southern Ocean Medical Center as the recipient of the outstanding “Make a Difference Day” campaign. Students, parents, friends and staff at the Manahawkin School truly made a difference for pediatric patients through a walk-a-thon that raised nearly $14,000 to help purchase a GlideScope. This lifesaving tool allows medical professionals to view a child’s airway, and it will be utilized in the Emergency Department.

Oncology Project Kicks Off With Leadership Gift

Benée Scola and Susan Blauvelt

Longtime supporters, Benée Scola and Susan Blauvelt, made a lead gift to kick off the campaign for oncology services at Southern Ocean Medical Center. These Long Beach Island residents feel strongly about giving back, supporting many charities throughout the country. Like many of us, cancer has touched their family. For that reason, the couple decided to invest in the health of the local community, designating their generous support to the exciting upgrades in oncology

care coming to Southern Ocean in the near future.

“Susan’s mother was treated for cancer at Southern Ocean and we really wanted to have an impact on the local community. I hope others will decide to invest in this project as well,” Benée said. “Getting quality cancer care and being able to do your treatments and follow up close to home is so important for patients and their family members.”

24th Annual Golf Outing Supports Southern Ocean

The 24th Annual Southern Ocean Medical Center Foundation Invitational Golf and Tennis Outing took place at Stockton Seaview Hotel & Golf Club in Galloway, NJ last summer. The Invitational drew a field of 116 golfers and included a tennis tournament supported by Grand Sponsor, Seacrest Village. All proceeds directly benefitted the programs and services at Southern Ocean Medical Center.

During the cocktail and awards reception, David Caldarella, Founder of David’s Dream and Believe Cancer Foundation, was honored with the Community Health and Wellness Award to acknowledge his commitment to the community.

Truex Foundation Golf Outing Benefits Southern Ocean

Thank you to the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation for donating the proceeds of its 2014 golf tournament to the Martin Truex Jr. Pediatric Care Center at Southern Ocean Medical Center.

The outing provides a fun, casual and competitive way to bring together local businesses, corporate partners and residents to raise important funds to support pediatric emergency services at Southern Ocean. The Martin Truex Jr. Pediatric Care Center in the Emergency Department opened in 2013 to provide top-notch emergency care for children in southern Ocean County.

Leaving a Legacy

Longtime Southern Ocean Medical Center volunteer Marie Fields was always thinking of the future of the hospital and the patients it served. She and her husband Hartley (known as ‘Buck’), both passed away recently, but made a provision in their will to provide financial support to the hospital they loved so dearly.

Marie supported our hospital network through decades of philanthropy, which included serving as President of the SOCH Auxiliary and a member of the Foundation board of trustees. The Foundation honored Marie and Buck’s memory this past year at a special donor appreciation reception at the Hospital. “We are so thankful for this loyal commitment and for the vision of caring the Fields shared with Southern Ocean Medical Center” Joe Coyle, President of Southern Ocean Medical Center.

Made possible through a generous gift from Janice Mitchell-Vassar, Bayshore Community Hospital unveiled its Multi-Specialty Interventional Suite in early December 2014. Outfitted to perform complex minimally invasive cardiovascular, endovascular, and interventional radiology procedures, this advanced technology brings the best cardiovascular care to the local community.

“This new technology offers patients advanced diagnostic and therapeutic options,” says Shaddy Younan, M.D., medical director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory at Bayshore. “The increased detail and clarity available at Bayshore means local residents won’t have to travel to receive high quality care and they will experience shorter hospital stays, less pain and quicker recoveries.”

According to Timothy J. Hogan, FACHE, regional hospital president, Monmouth County, “The opening of the Multi-Specialty Interventional Suite provides our community with immediate access to the best cardiovascular intervention as well as a direct connection to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, the regional provider of cardiac surgery, in the event that cardiac surgery is required.”

As we move into 2015, Bayshore Community Hospital will see great advancements. Plans are in place to renovate and expand the Hospital’s busy emergency department and enhance oncology services. Though these projects are in early stages of development, we look forward to sharing the Hospital’s exciting plans for growth.

The 6th Annual Wine & Spirits Tasting, hosted at Addison Park, raised more than $59,000 and attracted a crowd of more than 215 attendees in 2014. This tasteful event has become a yearly tradition at which community leaders support the continued growth of Bayshore’s cardiovascular program.

In 2014, the Bayshore Community Hospital Foundation Board proudly welcomed three distinguished members to the Board of Trustees.

“It’s moving to see such dedicated support for Bayshore,” said Serena DiMaso, chair of Bayshore Community Hospital Foundation. “This community recognizes the exceptional care their hospital provides and will continue to support Bayshore as it grows.”

and community health programs. This educational forum enables local business leaders to learn about health care issues that have an impact on their companies and communities. The event also provides a showcase of Meridian Health’s various service lines.

This year’s keynote address, titled, “Lessons Learned from the Roll-Out of Health Reform in Massachusetts and the Nation,” was presented by Jon Kingsdale, PhD., managing director of the Boston office of Wakely Consulting Group, a national consultant on issues related to health care reform. The discussion addressed challenges and opportunities for employers, new consumer options on the Exchange and opportunities and threats for health care systems. The 2014 luncheon was generously supported by QualCare, Inc., the event sponsor, and Bank of America Merrill Lynch, networking cocktail hour sponsor.

For more than three decades, the future of Riverview Medical Center was a priority for Dr. William Matthews, who served as director of the eye, ear, nose and throat department at Riverview Medical Center, ending in the

1960s. Through his estate, Dr. Matthews’s legacy continues. The final $690,000 gift distribution from this estate will benefit vision initiatives across the Meridian Health system. We are grateful to the Matthews family

for their vision and philanthropic investment, as their generosity continues to support the latest in ophthalmology technology and critical equipment.

The Women’s Heart Fund held two successful events in 2014 to further the group’s mission of raising funds for heart programs, services and technology provided by Meridian Health, while educating Monmouth and Ocean counties on the importance of heart health.

Women’s Heart Fund Continues Support of Cardiac Programs and Life-saving Screenings

Members of the Women’s Heart Fund Board enjoy their successful fall event

Proceeds from the group’s spring luncheon and fall cocktail events both support the new CardioVascular Intensive Care Unit at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. This state-of-the-art facility opened in early 2014 to provide leading-edge technologies for some of the

most critically ill patients, ensuring that they receive the finest quality health care in a private, healing environment.

Each year, the Women’s Heart Fund board selects and supports one cardiac program, service, or technology provided by Meridian Health.

In addition to generous support from many individual donors, the Foundation received two $10,000 grants in 2014 to support the Meridian at Home Hospice program. The grants from Community Foundation of NJ and the Lucy & Eleanor S. Upton Charitable Trust both provide hospice care for uninsured patients and their families who cannot afford it.

Grants Secured to Benefit Meridian at Home Hospice

Meridian strives to offer compassionate hospice care and support to all patients, regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay. On average, our hospice program provides more than $100,000 in unreimbursed hospice charity care each year.

The Community Foundation of NJ grant will also implement a new volunteer training program on topics such as confidentiality, patient rights, communication, grief, and loss. Meridian Health Foundation is grateful for the ongoing support of these generous groups.

Grant Dollars in Action

A breast cancer diagnosis is never easy. But, for the uninsured and underinsured, it can lead to added anxiety of trying to figure out how to pay for treatment.

Kathleen Thorn of Brick was one of those women.

The 41-year-old mother of two young boys is thankful for the grant received by Jersey Shore University Medical Center from the Central and South Jersey (CSNJ) Affiliate of Susan G. Komen. Without it, her stage three breast cancer may not have been detected.

Thanks to the grant, Kathleen was one of 300 local women who received free screening mammograms in 2014. Six others also had a cancer diagnosis that may have gone unnoticed.

When Kathleen arrived at Jersey Shore Imaging with a referral from her gynecologist, the staff there immediately identified her as someone who would qualify for help from the Komen grant and a very fast moving process began immediately.

“I was called on St. Patrick’s Day in 2014 with the diagnosis and given the names of two breast surgeons to call. Dr. Johnson-Miller actually saw me that day. I went right to Jersey Shore from her office and everything snowballed from there. Within two weeks I had started chemotherapy,” Kathleen said.

She has been cancer-free since August 2014. In addition to her supportive family and friends, she credits Jersey Shore’s nurse navigator with aiding her recovery. “Betty set up all of my appointments for me. It was a very emotional experience and thankfully, all I had to worry about was showing up. I was afraid that my insurance status would affect my care, but I truly received the

Cancer survivor Kathleen Thorn and her Nurse Navigator Betty Moore

best care from a fabulous team. I am so thankful for this grant.”

“Kathleen’s experience is a perfect example of how the grant dollars awarded from Susan G. Komen are put to work, supporting the diverse needs of the Monmouth and Ocean County communities that Meridian serves,” said Betty Moore, MS, APN-BC, OCN, CBCN, Clinical Advocate for the Breast Center at Jersey Shore.

Jersey Shore University Medical Center received a $69,169 grant from the Central and South Jersey (CSNJ) Affiliate of Susan G. Komen to provide breast health education and mammography screenings to low-income, uninsured, and under-insured women in Monmouth County. Through the program, approximately 400 annual mammography screenings will be completed. The grant also supported the cost of diagnostic imaging tests for women whose mammograms showed abnormalities.

Additionally, a $32,539 grant was received by Ocean Medical Center to provide breast health education to 1,000 Ocean County women over the age of 65, at-risk, or uninsured/underinsured, and encourage them to complete annual mammograms.

Thanks to a generous $100,000 gift from the Nicola-Musso Charitable Foundation, the Musso-Mencel Cancer Project will provide financial support for cancer patients needing genetic testing. Named to acknowledge the work of Peter J. Mencel, M.D., of Atlantic Hematology Oncology Associates in Manasquan, the fund will be administered by a committee headed by Dr. Mencel, which will screen patients and provide the resources for important genetic testing for cancer risk that is not normally covered by insurance.
