The 100 MIDI files in this category are from over 40 operas written by some 28 composers. Operatic selections on
piano roll were very popular at the time, with Wagner operas the most frequently recorded. In most cases, the selections
are arrangements or transcriptions, not just a piano score for a repetiteur. In several cases, composers are playing their
own music (marked below with *). Earliest recordings are from 1905.
Composers include d’Albert*, Bizet, Donizetti, Gounod, Humperdinck*, Leoncavallo*, Mascagni*, Puccini, Rossini,
Saint-Saens*, Verdi (10 selections) and Wagner (37 selections).
Pianists include Robert Armbruster, Wilhelm Backhaus, Ferruccio Busoni, Eugen d’Albert, Vladimir Horowitz, Ralph
Leopold, Benno Moiseiwitsch and Dr Cornelius Rybner.

Background stories
1. Vladimir Horowitz (1903-1989) recorded his famous Carmen Variations twice on piano roll, for the Welte-
Mignon in 1926 and for the Duo-Art in 1927-28. Both versions are different, and Horowitz never published the
work. Scholars have since produced a score using the piano roll recordings.
2. Ralph Leopold (1884-1955) studied piano in Berlin where he made his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic
Orchestra, appearing first in America in 1919. He made a specialty of giving lecture-recitals on Wagner’s operas.
3. Hans Hofmann was a Bayreuth pianist who recorded the piano selections on a set of five rolls produced for the
Duo-Art about Richard Wagner. Called Audiographic Biographical rolls, the notes on these rolls were written by
Wagner’s son Siegfried, who required that a Bayreuth pianist make the roll recordings.
4. Ferruccio Busoni (1866-1924) had three Welte-Mignon recording sessions in 1905 to record the Rigoletto
Paraphrase by Verdi-Lizst. It was Welte’s practice that if an artist did not like their recording, it would be done
again, despite the effort needed each time to produce the roll recording. The final recording was made on
November 11, 1905.
5. Cornelius Rybner (1855-1929) recorded his transcriptions for the Welte-Mignon (1913) and the Ampico (1920s),
recording similar works for both systems. According to the November 1921 issue of Ampico Recordings, Rybner’s
“Transcriptions of Wagner have been honoured by the commendation of Franz Liszt.” Rybner was made head of
the music department at Columbia University in 1904, replacing an ailing Edward MacDowell.
6. Pietro Mascagni (1863-1945) appears on an Ampico roll, but in fact the recording he made was for the Hupfeld
DEA in Leipzig. Under a deal with Hupfeld, it was also issued as an Ampico roll. There are very few operational
DEA reproducing pianos, giving importance to the Ampico version.
