Vladimir Horowitz (1903-1989) recorded his famous Carmen Variations twice on piano roll, for the Welte- Mignon in 1926 and for the Duo-Art in 1927-28. Both versions are different, and Horowitz never published the work. Scholars have since produced a score using the piano roll recordings. 2. Ralph Leopold (1884-1955) studied piano in Berlin where he made his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, appearing first in America in 1919. He made a specialty of giving lecture-recitals on Wagner’s operas. 3. Hans Hofmann was a Bayreuth pianist who recorded the piano selections on a set of five rolls produced for the Duo-Art about Richard Wagner. Called Audiographic Biographical rolls, the notes on these rolls were written by Wagner’s son Siegfried, who required that a Bayreuth pianist make the roll recordings. 4. Ferruccio Busoni (1866-1924) had three Welte-Mignon recording sessions in 1905 to record the Rigoletto Paraphrase by Verdi-Lizst. It was Welte’s practice that if an artist did not like their recording, it would be done again, despite the effort needed each time to produce the roll recording. The final recording was made on November 11, 1905. 5. Cornelius Rybner (1855-1929) recorded his transcriptions for the Welte-Mignon (1913) and the Ampico (1920s), recording similar works for both systems. According to the November 1921 issue of Ampico Recordings, Rybner’s “Transcriptions of Wagner have been honoured by the commendation of Franz Liszt.” Rybner was made head of the music department at Columbia University in 1904, replacing an ailing Edward MacDowell. 6. Pietro Mascagni (1863-1945) appears on an Ampico roll, but in fact the recording he made was for the Hupfeld DEA in Leipzig. Under a deal with Hupfeld, it was also issued as an Ampico roll. There are very few operational DEA reproducing pianos, giving importance to the Ampico version.

Background stories

1. Vladimir Horowitz (1903-1989) recorded his famous Carmen Variations twice on piano roll, for the Welte-

2. Ralph Leopold (1884-1955) studied piano in Berlin where he made his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic
