Page 2: Contents page research

Issue date and number: this is suitable especially for big well known magazines, as it allows readers who are subscribed to the magazine to quickly identify which edition of the magazine this Is and prevents confusion between the different issues. This is great for readers who have a great collection of magazines.

Main Image: this is the focal point of the magazine, even though it is not the only image on the page, it is placed in a centralised position and is much bigger than the other image.. This draws attention to the image, and suggest/ connotes that the main story is also related to this image..

The features column: this isolates the main or most important stories from the others, allowing the reader to quickly scan the most important stories that they want to read.

The page numbers of the articles are in red, standing out against the black font and grey background to emphasise and allow clarity of information preventing the reader from getting confused and allowing them to find out which page the desired article is on quickly and efficiently

Logo is placed repeatedly on the front cover and in the contents page to create a sense of continuity and consistency. It also creates some sort of brand recognition, reminding the reader that this is the magazine they are reading and creating a sense of loyalty from the readers. It creates a sense of consistency as the readers see the same thing over and over again, rather than having completely different designs and logos on different pages creating a sense of confusion.

There is another image placed here, although it is much smaller than the main image, it is still successful in diverting the audiences attention to the review section at the bottom of the magazine.

Issue number, this is placed in a similar position as that of the magazine I researched before, in the top corner. This issue number allows clarity and prevents collectors or subscribers of the magazine from getting confused as to which issue contains what..

This is the main image, it is much larger than all the other ones on the page, connoting the importance of the people in it. This also suggests that the main article will be about these artists, prompting readers to go and discover what the article is about.

The page number here is big and white, standing out from the greys and blacks in the background. There are no headlines or information as to what will be on this page apart from the image, creating a sense of curiosity among the readers, and leading them to that page.,

Magazine logo- reminds the reader what magazine they are reading, and creating a sense of brand familiarity as well as some loyalty. Also creates consistency as the same logo is in the same place on the front cover.

Contents- the black contrasts with the red and goes well with the common colour theme of the mag. It also guides the reader and clarifies what page it is they are reading in case there is any confusion or miscommunication.

This is the features column. The white font contrasts with the red background and also obeys the general theme of the magazine (black, red and white). The features make it easier for the audience to quickly skim over and identify what the latest ‘news’ is and find what will interest them as fast as possible. This is as opposed to flicking through the entire magazine where the ‘filler articles’ which may not interest the reader as much as the highlights, so rather than increasing reader frustration of having to flick through the hundreds of articles in well established magazines such as this one, they can easily find them in a much easier faster way.

The logo of the magazine is placed again in the contents page of the magazine to act as a constant reminder for the reader- telling them they are reading this magazine, creating a sense of brand recognition and also building up loyalty.

The features subheading separates the main stories from other less important ‘filler stories’ allowing the reader to easily identify the main stories easily. This is as opposed to flicking through the entire magazine where the ‘filler articles’ which may not interest the reader as much as the highlights, so rather than increasing reader frustration of having to flick through the hundreds of articles in well established magazines such as this one, they can easily find them in a much easier faster way

The online section prompts the reader to visit the magazines website, also stating that there are other exclusive stories which may not be found in the magazine here, on the website. This in turn also prompts the reader to find out more and by visiting the website it allows the mag to benefit from the added web views, as we now live in a digital era where everything is done electronically.

The main image is the focal point. Although there are various other images on the page, the size and positioning make it the focal point. Her black clothes contrast with the blues and whites on the page, again adding to the fact that this main image is the focal point on the page.

The header –contents in black bold lettering draws attention and identifies this page to the audience as the contents page avoiding confusion or miscommunications.
