1. Welcome Note //////////////////////////////

Dear media representatives,

Welcome to adidas ROCKSTARS 2014! We are thrilled to host the fourth edition of

our boulder invitational contest in Stuttgart’s beautiful Porsche-Arena, one of the

most modern sports arenas in Europe.

This year’s event sees 70 top class athletes from 21 different countries,

including multiple Bouldering World Champions, the overall winners of the 2014

Bouldering World Cup, the overall winners of the 2012 and 2013 Lead World Cup

as well as the 2012 Climbing World Champion Overall (Boulder/Lead/Speed).

So you can look forward to a top-notch competition – powerful, dynamic moves and

spectacular jumps are guaranteed.

When we first came up with the idea for adidas ROCKSTARS, nearly every single

athlete we talked to mentioned that the best competitions are the ones with a great

atmosphere and good music. That input encouraged us to implement our idea of

combining rock climbing with rock music live on stage. This year, the Stuttgart-

based band Badasstics, the European Beatbox Champion Robeat and the

extreme sports DJs Chainsaw and Sungod will accompany the final.

However, this weekend the focus is not only on professional bouldering athle-

tes. One hundred talented and aspiring amateur climbers from 11 different

countries have signed up for the ”GORE-TEX® Be a Rockstar“ contest to win

a wildcard for the pro competition. Six of them will be in the limelight during the

“Build your Boulder” final on Saturday afternoon, when they share the stage with

climbing legends like Thomas Huber, Barbara Zangerl, Mayan Smith-Gobat and

Ben Rueck.

With this adidas ROCKSTARS Media Guide we want to provide you with all neces-

sary background information you may need for your report. Don’t hesitate to contact

us, if you have any queries or would like to interview an athlete or a member of the

organisation.

Warm Regards

Sonja Güldner-Hamel

4. adidas ROCKSTARS //////////////////////////////

4.1 General Information

adidas ROCKSTARS at the Porsche-Arena in Stuttgart is a top-class invitational competition for the world’s best bouldering athletes. The event uniquely combines elite sports with live music turning a climbing competition into a true „rock show“. Bouldering is a style of rock climbing undertaken without a rope over a crash pad. In terms of coordination, acrobatics and athleticism it is certainly the most demanding discipline in competition climbing. The goal of competitive bouldering is to reach a hold that is marked as ‘top’ using as few attempts as possible.

Climbing meets Music

Nearly everyone has experienced the motivating power of music over our body and soul. Music can release emotions within seconds; the right beat encourages us to tap our feet or clap our hands; a familiar tune invites us to sing along. Music drives us and makes emotional moments unfor-gettable. It is no secret that many bouldering athletes name their routes after songs they listen to when mastering a project.

Music is also an integral part of a good sporting event, because it puts heroes in the spotlight, creates excitement and entertains the crowds. Intoxicating music and a great atmosphere encourage athletes to compete at their physical best. For this reason, adidas ROCKSTARS combines high perfor-mance sport with live music, transforming a climbing competition into an elaborately staged show. Heated up by Stuttgart’s punkrock band Badasstics, European Beatbox Champion Robeat and the DJs Chainsaw and Sungod, the world’s best competition climbers will rock the walls.

Invitational Competition

The stand-alone competition is geared to the top bouldering athletes of the IFSC world ranking (International Federation of Sport Climbing). 70 athletes from 20 different countries have been invited to Stuttgart, including the Top 3 of the European Youth Cup as well as national and continental champions. 20 men and women can qualify on Friday for the semifinal on Saturday. In the qualifi-cation round the athletes have a window of four and in the semifinal of five minutes, respectively, on each of four different boulders.

The top 6 men and women advance to the final on Saturday evening. The finalists first climb on two boulders, one after another. Then the top three advance to the next round, in which they compete on a third boulder problem for the superfinal. In the superfinal, the Top 2 compete in direct comparison on a so-called “super boulder”, which was specifically created for the event. They climb simultane-ously an identical route on two sides of the same boulder. In the superfinal it’s not sufficient to hold the top grip for three seconds like in the previous rounds. As it is custom when bouldering outdoors on natural rock, the athletes must stand with both feet on top of the boulder block and in addition

touch a buzzer, which will determine the winner in case of a hairbreadth finish. In this thrilling duel the two superfinalists need both, excellent skills and good nerves. Although the climbers cannot see each other, the beat of the music and the cheers of the crowd will reflect what is happening on the other side. The person who first stands upright on the super boulder is the merited adidas ROCKSTAR 2014 and wins 4000 Euros.

World-class field lined up

The start list reads like the who‘s who in bouldering: the field includes the previous three adidas ROCKSTARS champions, triple Bouldering World Champion and Overall World Cup winner 2013, Dmitrii Sharafutdinov (RUS), the 2012 World Champion Overall (L/S/B), Sean McColl (CAN), and the silver medallist of the 2014 Bouldering World Championship, Jernej Kruder (SLO). This year, they are facing fierce competition from Germany. 2014 Overall World Cup winner, Jan Hojer (GER) and two-time WCH silver medallist overall Thomas „Shorty“ Tauporn (GER) are desperate to win in front of their home audience. The women’s field is headed, amongst others, by the exceptionally gifted Sasha DiGiulian (USA), the youngest and third woman in the world to climb the difficulty grade of 5.14d (9a), the 2014 Overall World Cup winner Akiyo Noguchi (JPN) and the 2014 Overall World Cup runner-up Shauna Coxsey (GBR), who was defeated in the superfinal last year. Two-time French Champion and Melloblocco winner 2014, Mélissa Le Nevé (FRA), who focuses more on outdoor projects this year, is also counted among the favourites, just like the Overall Lead World Cup Champions Sachi Amma (JPN) and Mina Marcovič (SLO). The level of performance in the IFSC World Cup has rarely been higher than this year, so spectators can look forward to a thrilling competition.

Full-service to athletes

Service to the athlete is the core philosophy of adidas at every event they organise or support. “For us athletes always take centre stage”, says Axel Burkhardt, head of Olympic Sports, Cycling and Outdoor at adidas Global Sports Marketing. “Only if the athletes feel comfortable they can surpass themselves. We’ve created an Athlete Lounge backstage, i.e. a chill zone with recovery area, a big warm-up wall, sports nutrition and athlete catering. Before and after the competition the athletes can enjoy complimentary massages, physiotherapy and sport medical consulting at our Reload Center. The better they feel the better they will perform and that makes the competition more exciting for everyone.”

Sport climbing is booming

In recent years, climbing has truly become a popular sport, not least because of numerous climbing gyms: more and more athletes are attracted by vertical challenges, both indoor and outdoor, and the trend continues. For a very good reason: climbing does not only train most of our 656 muscles, it challenges the mind, too. Especially the target group of indoor climbers is growing rapidly. In Ger-many alone, there are more than 250 climbing gyms open to the public. In the United States there are around 600. Meanwhile over 2 million Europeans climb regularly; in Germany alone there are around 300,000 climbers. Twenty-five per cent of the 892,000 members of the German Alpine Club (DAV) state that they are climbing on a regular basis. The sport also attracts many women. Around 40 per cent of German climbers are female. And that is not surprising: this sport is not only about strength, but also about body control and athleticism. And it is a mind game, too.

Competition climbing

Climbing has also become an international high-performance sport. Official competitions take place in three different disciplines: lead climbing, bouldering and speed climbing. Bouldering is also known as maximal strength discipline. The difficulties of boulder “problems” range between boulder grade 7c to 8a+ and may be compared with single moves of grade 10 or 11 lead routes. In bouldering competitions, the aim is to master four to five short boulder problems in several rounds (qualification, semi-final, final) with as few attempts as possible. For each boulder the athletes have a time frame of four or five minutes, depending on the respective round. A boulder consists of six to eight climbing moves on average and has a maximum height of 4.5 metres, which makes it possible to climb without belay ropes. Falls are absorbed by so-called crash pads, i.e. custom-built boulder mats. The climber has to put both hands on marked starting holds and climb from there to the high-est hold, the so-called top. The top hold, too, must be visibly held with both hands. The athlete who achieved the most tops with the fewest attempts is the winner of the competition. In case nobody is able to top a boulder problem the so-called bonus hold applies, meaning bonus points for a certain pre-defined zone the climber has to reach on his way to the top. To determine the ranking, the de-cisive factor is the maximum number of tops combined with the lowest number of attempts, followed by the number of bonus points and the number of attempts needed to reach those bonus holds.

Here is an example from the result list: Juliane Wurm had 4 tops (T) in the semifinal and needed 9 attempts (AT) for that. Akiyo Noguchi only needed 7 tries for 4 tops. If both had topped the same number of boulders with the same number of attempts, the bonus evaluation would apply – in that case Juliane Wurm would have been ranked higher, because she only needed 6 attempts (AB) for 4 bonus holds (B).

4.3. Regulations*

* This is just an abstract of the most important rules. For the complete body of regulations please go to adidas-rockstars.com

General

The boulder competition adidas ROCKSTARS consists of • a qualification• a semifinal • a final• and a superfinal

Each boulder includes a clear and defined starting point from which all attempts must be started.• This starting point consists of a clearly defined position for both hands and for one foot or both feet.• The starting point is for all boulder problems identically marked.

Each boulder problem is equipped with a “zone” hold, i.e. holding of a specific handle for extra points (even without completing the problem). • The Chief Route Setter determines the exact position of this hold.• The marking of this hold is clearly highlighted and differs from the marking of the starting position.• The marking of this hold is identical for all boulder problems.• The zone bonus is also awarded once a competitor has successfully climbed the boulder without reaching the zone hold.

A boulder problem is counted as “top“ once the competitor has reached the designated top hold with both hands holding it for at least 3 seconds. This position needs to be confirmed by the respective Boulder Referee with a clear “OK“ and by raising the official green card.

Equipment

Athletes are only allowed to compete in the following equipment:• climbing shoes• sports top• sports pants• chalk bag (dry and liquid magnesia)

Boulder Wall

The boulder wall is only open for bouldering• once the Boulder Referee has explained the problem to the competitor in advance.• the competitor is allowed to use the designated holds for his/her attempt as long as not marked otherwise.• screw holes within the boulder wall are prohibited for holding but permitted for stepping.• as long as the side edges of the boulder wall are not used except it has been specifically allowed.

Registration & Preparation

Each competitor has to be ready to leave the lounge/ transit area and enter the competition arena, when instructed to do so. Any delay in this regard leads to a warning. Any further delay might lead to disqualification.

Procedure

During the qualification (40+x men and 30+x women are permitted) and semifinal (20 men and 20 women + 2 Wildcards) round each competitor has to attempt the four boulder problems in a given order. After each boulder, the competitor gets a recreational break of 4 minutes during qualification and 5 minutes during the semifinal.

During the final round (6 men and 6 women) the boulder problems also have to be attempted in a given order and with a rotation period of 4+ minutes. The athlete is allowed to make her/his last attempt by finishing her/his 5th minute.

During the final round, the 6 finalists climb two different boulders. The best 3 finalists of this round fight on a third boulder problem for the superfinal.

The start and finish of each rotation period are announced by • a clear and acoustic sound • the emcee• the starting of the stopwatch

Page 8: CONTENTS...Passwort: media2014 link for our documentation to: Sonja Güldner-Hamel Planet Talk GmbH Spinnereiinsel 3A 83059 Kolbermoor Germany Email: sonja.hamel@planettalk.de Up-to-date

1514

Within the superfinal the last 2 finalists (men and women separately) compete simultaneously on the same boulder (super boulder) climbing identical routes. The athlete who makes it first to the top wins the title. The boulder is counted as “top“ once the competitor has reached a standing position on top of the boulder and hits the buzzer.

Before a competitor starts his/her attempt, all holds and steps have to be cleaned by the Boulder Referee or his assistant. The competitor is allowed to ask for a specific cleaning prior to his/her attempt. Only cleaning materials provided by the organizer may be used during the competition. The athlete may also clean holds and steps him/herself.

An attempt is regarded as started and counted • once both feet have left the ground from the starting position.• once hands and feet have touched other holds than the starting holds.

An attempt is regarded as completed once• the boulder problem has been successfully topped• the competitor has touched the ground with any of his body parts. • the competitor has not completed his/her attempts within the rotation period. • the competitor has not started as demonstrated by the Boulder Referee.• the competitor has used any part of the wall that is not open for bouldering.

Points System

After each boulder round, the competitors are rated according to the following primary ranking criteria* in the exact given order:

• number of tops reached. • number of attempts reaching that top. • number of zone holds (bonus) reached. • number of attempts reaching these zone holds.

*During the final round, the highest hold controlled on each boulder problem will be recorded, as a secondary criterion for ranking.

In case more than three competitors are ranked among the top three after the first two boulders of the final round, all competitors who are in the top three advance to the third boulder of the final round. In case more than two competitors are ranked among the top two after the third boulder of the final round, based on the primary ranking criteria, the secondary criterion will be applied to select the top two competitors to advance to the superfinal. If competitors are still tied after ranking by this secondary criterion, advancement to the superfinal will be based by a “count-back” to the previous round(s). If competitors are still tied, a tie-break is carried out on one additional boulder, which has been prepared in advance by the route setters, complying with the following rules:

• Each competitor has only one attempt according to the same starting order as in the final round. • A specific boulder time is defined. • This boulder attempt has to start within 40 seconds. • If no finalist has reached the top and the results remain unchanged another attempt is conducted until the finalists are separated with maximum of 3 attempts.

If after the tie-break boulder, competitors are still tied, then a coin flip will decide the climber(s) who will advance to the superfinal.

In case both finalists reach the top at the same time during the superfinal, both athletes are ranked first, considered as equally strong and the prize/ prize money is equally divided.

4.4 Head Referee

adidas ROCKSTARS head referee Johannes Altner (GER) started climbing at the age of 12 and has experienced the sport from various angles in the past 33 years of his climbing career: as competition climber, as route setter on national level, as climbing coach and adventure educator, and since 2000 also as referee. In 2005 Hannes started working at international competitions and since 2008 he is managing the referee team at World Cup events as head referee. His preference are boulder comps, because „there is always such a familiar atmosphere despite being a highly professional elite sport. The athletes are not opponents but friends, who get on well no matter where they are from.“ His aim as head referee is to facilitate a fair, good and enjoyable competition for the athletes.

5. GORE-TEX® //////////////////////////////////////////// Be a Rockstar Amateur Competition ///////GORE-TEX® Be a Rockstar is a stepping-stone for enthusiastic amateurs aged 16 and over, who would like to compete at least once with the world’s best bouldering athletes. A total of 100 par-ticipants (men and women) are permitted to this contest. They compete in a jam session format, which means that they must climb 8 different boulder problems in a random order within a given time frame. The winners of the jam session receive a wildcard for the adidas ROCKSTARS pro competition and enter the semifinal round on Saturday afternoon. There they compete alongside the top stars of the international bouldering community for a place in the final.

In addition, the top three men and women of the GORE-TEX® Be a Rockstar qualification spend one afternoon in the limelight in their very own final: a “Build your Boulder” contest. Here the finalists form a team with a top athlete drawn by lot. With he help of climbing legends like Thomas Huber, Babsi Zangerl, Mayan Smith-Gobat or Ben Rueck they have to set their own route within one hour. Each finalist must climb all three self-built problems as well as a fourth boulder set by the route setters. In order to claim victory, the finalists need creativity, speed, and self-evaluation, because only by topping their own boulder problem they have a chance to win. The competitor who tops the most boulders with the least number of attempts claims the GORE-TEX® Be a Rockstar crown and will be invited to the adidas ROCKSTARS pro competition in the following year.

7. Route Setters ////////////////////////////////////////The quality of the routes is vital for a good competition. After all, adidas ROCKSTARS wants to highlight the skills of the international bouldering elite. At the same time, the route setters try to live up to the interests of spectators and the media. That asks for instinct feel. Boul-ders have to be set in a fair way with equal opportunities for all athletes. Nevertheless they should severely test the skills of the competitors: flexibility, dynamics, strength, endurance, creativity, and orientation. In the best of cases, only one athlete masters the most difficult problem. But if the boulders are too tough, it could backfire. This is when the 68 years of competition experience of the adidas ROCKSTARS route setting team come into play.

Chris Danielson (USA) has been a chief route setter for national competitions for nearly 10 years and the leading American route setter for the IFSC Boulder and Lead World Cups in the US. Since 2006, he has developed a national route setting program and is the primary instruc-tor for the US federation. Chris began climbing and route setting almost 20 years ago in his home state of New York and quickly became obsessed with bouldering after a first trip to Hueco Tanks. Playing with movement is a never-ending passion and the lens through which he thinks about and approaches climbing. With graduate studies in philosophy, Chris takes both an analytical and artistic approach to route setting, looking to always better understand climbing mechanics and build inspiring sequences. When not helping to set up competitions, Chris is an independent consultant for climbing wall businesses and representative for top climbing brands in North America, through his company Thread Climbing.

Manuel Hassler (SUI) has over 10 years of experience as route setter in boulder competi-tions. The 33-year-old Swiss worked for Boulder World Cups in Japan, the USA, Italy, France, Poland, the Netherlands, Germany, La Réunion, Russia and his home country Switzerland. He was a member of the route setter team at the World Championships in Arco and has also set the pro-blems at this year’s Boulder World Champs in Munich. In 2013, Manuel spent two months in Japan to build training boulders for the Japanese national team. He used the opportunity to repeat Tokio Muroi’s famous slab boulder Bansousha (8b) in Ogawayama. In 2012, together with Mathieu Achermann, he founded the company Flathold Sarl in Biel for which Manuel shapes a wide range of climbing holds that were also exhibited at the annual Outdoor trade show in Friedrichshafen.

Laurent „Larry“ Laporte (FRA) has more than 20 years of experience in route setting. He can’t really remember how he got into building boulders, but he knows very well why he‘s still passiona-tely doing it: he loves being creative. He enjoys trying the boulder himself, the tension during the competition and the relief afterwards. Laurent has already set four World Championships and various World Cup routes. To the frenchman each contest is a new challenge. In his opinion the biggest difficulty to set a good route is to play with the rhythm, always searching for new concepts to be able to screw a good show. In his spare time Larry carves climbing holds, listens to Nirvana and AC/DC or just surfs on the wave of his life.

Matthias Woitzuck (AUT) is the second Austrian in the team. The Viennese has been setting routes for eight years now, also likes to be creative and to express himself through climbing. Matthias enjoys meeting up with other route setters to share different styles. His most important route setting project to date was the World Cup in Vienna, where he gained a lot of experience. What matters most in com-petitions in his opinion, is to set routes that are enjoyable but also challenging enough for the athletes and entertain the crowds, of course. Matthias is a full-blooded rocker and listens to “Rage Against the Machine“. When he’s not climbing in the gym you might find him outside skydiving or speedflying.

Adam Pustelnik (POL) ) is originally from Poland but feels like he belongs everywhere and is at home anywhere. Adam has been climbing for more than 20 years and that is pretty much what his life is all about. He is currently working as route setter, translator, teacher, and writer. During the past 10 years, Adam was able to work as head route setter for national and international competitions like World Cups, Youth World Championships and the 2012 IFSC World Champion-ship in Paris. Since 2007, Adam has been instructing and managing Polish route setters. What he enhoys about route setting? „First of all the aspect of creating something new that we want to see them play with. So one of the main values is being creative. Furthermore my inspiration that climbing gives me. It‘s that kind of job that motivates you. And I really enjoy working in teams, which can be quite spiritual work as we exchange experiences.“ Route setting is just one of Adam‘s climbing activities, but it is the one he can think of as a job and, what‘s more important, it keeps him connected to the competition community. In his spare time he enjoys sport climbing, traditional and big wall climbing. And that‘s where Adam sees his climbing goals. Setting lets him see everything from a different side and a more professional angle.

8. Music Acts ////////////////////////////////////////////Sport meets Music! The Stuttgart-based punkrock band Badasstics has written a climbing-inspired song particularly for adidas ROCKSTARS. With a length of four minutes ‘No Borders’ is just as long as a climbing interval in the finals.

BADASSTICS …hard rock beats with lasting melodies …and a „sweaty stage performance that even makes Grandma twitch“

Matze, Roland, Jordi and Tom from the Stuttgart area rush through the region since their foundation in 2009. And they delight their constantly growing audience with one catchy tune after another. The extremely positive feedback on their live shows encourages the four boys to passionately write new songs and win over new fans. Their most important mission: to introduce neo alternative punk rock to the rock ‚n‘ roll proletariat!Music style: Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Biffy Clyro.

Roland has been performing on German stages since 1995. Together with his first band, cmf - confused mindfuckers, he already played on several tours and festivals all over Germany, e.g. the „Bizarre Festival“ or the „Rheinkulturfestival“ in Bonn, and he rocked the stage alongside bands like Faith No More, Guano Apes, Rammstein, die Fantastischen 4, Farmer Boys, Such A Surge, Sodom and Wizo. A song of his band was released on the Visions Magazine sampler (music of the 90’s), which also featured the Foo Fighters and the Pixies.

Matthias has been active in several music projects since 2004 and during that time he won the first newcomer competition called „Soundtrack“ in Böblingen. He used to be a member of the bands Unfriesirt, Mr. Miller, Fonky Fonky and was teaching at the Modern School of Music in Calw. Matze was able to prove his musical talent in numerous concerts and during a tour across England. The passionate rock climber is now eager to crest the Rock Olympus with his new band Badasstics.

Jordi is bound for the rock ’n’ roll world since 1999. With his bands Jaya the Cat (USA) or Wealthy Begger (NL), he travelled all over Europe and performed at legendary festivals like „Rebellion“ (UK), „Lowlands & Pinkpop“ (NL), „Ireon“ (GR) and „Donauinselfest“ (A). At these events he shared the stage with bands like Beatsteaks, Broilers, Sublime with Rome or Frank Turner. He recently moved to Stuttgart and now rocks the world’s wide stage with Badasstics.

Tom has been playing as drummer in several bands since 2005. He started his career in the school band Strump it! and participated in Germany’s biggest contest for up-and-coming musicians, the „VIVA Schooljam 2006“. Afterwords he rocked many stages with the progressive rock band Mega-mania in the area of the Lower Rhine River. At the German „Pop and Rock Award 2009“, which has been won by bands like PUR or Luxuslärm, Tom had his big nationwide breakthrough. With Mega-mania he claimed the second place in the category „Hard n‘ Heavy“. In 2012 he worked 2 months in the studio with the German rock band Grenzenlos and played at several events in Western Germa-ny. In 2014 Tom moved to Stuttgart where he found his „new musical home“ in the band Badasstics.

BEATBOXER ROBEAT Others need drum sets, sound effects and singers to sound bold. Robeat only needs a mic – because the man is his own band. 24 years old, the European Beatbox Champion is always striving to make the fine art of oral acrobatics accessible to a large audience. His style is characterized by hard techno beats, fast drum and base rhythms, smooth hip hop beats and jazz freestyle – always peppered with humor and slapstick. At the Beatbox World Championships in Berlin Ro-beat made it into the top 10. Over 10 million fans clicked his videos on Youtube. On television, he became famous with his appearances at Stern TV with Günther Jauch, TV Total with Stefan Raab or at the RTL show „Supertalent“. He continues to show a lot of TV appearances on Kika, Nickelo-deon, ZDF, PRO7 and on the radio, for example, the WDR and SWR3. With „Cartoon Network“, he produced beatbox workshop for television. Even the big movie theatres couldn’t stop Robeat. He plays himself in „Naughty Girls 2“ and took a role in the remake of „Super Troopers“. With his new groundbreaking program „Universal Beatbox“, he is traveling and touring all over Europe.www.robeat.de

DJ CHAINSAW Chainsaw ranks among the hottest extreme sports DJs in Europe. Since 1990, the native Fran-conian spins records at Club Labyrinth in Würzburg and since 1996 he has been on tour for sporting events and club gigs all over Europe. In 2006, he was the responsible music director for the snowboard events at the Olympic Winter Games in Torino. For X-Fighters in Rome, he inspired the freestyle motocross elite. And at adidas ROCKSTARS in Stuttgart, Chainsaw wants to push the world‘s best climbers to top form.

DJ SUNGOD Since 1998, DJ Sungod has worked in his hometown Würzburg as resident DJ at the well-known Indie-disco „Labyrinth“. He’s proven his talent as rock DJ at various national and international events, e.g. at the youth fair „You“ in Dortmund, the „Up From The Ground“ festival in Gemünden or the Boarder Cross World Cup in Méribel (FRA).

9. Porsche-Arena ///////////////////////////////////////

Stuttgart’s Porsche-Arena opened in May 2006 celebrating its premiere with the German live TV show “Verstehen Sie Spaß?”. It’s the perfect venue for a diversity of events, like handball, basketball, tennis, ice hockey, boxing, music concerts or corporate events. With a capacity of 7,500 seats, the Porsche-Arena is a true “quick-change genius” and offers boundless possibilities. The Porsche-Arena was a cauldron for the Handball World Championship matches. It’s where women tennis players have had to play on ice. Obviously not directly, but the permanently installed frozen surface makes it easy to stage ice hockey matches and shows like Holiday on Ice. Thanks to its steep grandstands, all spectators are close to the action. Stars and bands are within grasp, which creates a unique atmosphere. The hall is predestined for sports. Depending on the event, different floors can be laid in the shortest possible time.

SloperClimbers must use an open hand (like palming a basketball) to grab on to these holds that have little to no difference in surface texture. That makes it pretty difficult to climb that specific hold.

Speed (competitive climbing)The goal of speed climbing is to climb a route as fast as possible. In each round two athletes are climbing identical routes next to each other. After a short brake they switch sides and climb again. The faster athlete advances to the next round.

TopOne hold on the boulder wall is marked as top. To solve the boulder probem successfully the athlete must reach that specific hold and hold it for 3 seconds.

Transit ZoneAfter his first climbing attempt the athlete must return to the transit zone, where he prepares himself for the next round. From there it is not possible to see the boulder wall or other athletes during their climb to avoid unfair advantage.

10. Glossary ////////////////////////////////////////////Bonus/ ZoneEach boulder problem is equipped with a “zone” hold, i.e. holding of a specific handle for extra points, even without completing the problem.

BoulderingIs a style of rock climbing undertaken without a rope and normally limited to very short climbs over a crash pad (called a bouldering mat) so that a fall will not result in serious injury. It is typically practi-ced on large natural boulders or artificial boulders in gyms and outdoor urban areas. The goal of competitive bouldering is to reach a hold that is marked as ‘top’ using as few attempts as possible. Therefore bouldering emphasizes power, strength, and dynamics.

Crimp(er)sA hold which is only just big enough to be grasped with the tips of the fingers.

DeadpointThe Deadpoint is basically a controlled dynamic move where you use momentum to gain a higher handhold. In a deadpoint you still maintain at least one or two points of contact with the rock.

DynoThe Dyno is similiar to a deadpoint except you leave contact with the rock while making a lunge for a higher hold.

FlashTo successfully complete a boulder problem on the first attempt.

Foot hookA climbing technique involving hooking a heel or toe against a hold in order to balance or to provide additional support.

IFSCThe International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) is the international governing body for the sport of competitive climbing, which consists of the disciplines lead climbing, speed climbing, and bouldering.

Lead (competitive climbing)Climbing discipline undertaken with a rope. The athletes have to climb a challenging route of about 15 - 20 meters height on-sight (with no prior practice). The maximum height is valuated. Athletes are allowed to study the routes from the bottom a few minutes before the competition starts.

PinchersYou grab that hold with your fingers and thumb, i.e. you must pinch it to hold on.

Route/ ProblemA route or problem is a particular sequence of a several holds and steps on a boulder wall, set by the route setter.

The new adidas climbing range is inspired by and developed with some of the world’s best female climbers - Sasha DiGiulian, Mélissa Le Nevé, Barbara Zangerl and Mayan Smith-Gobat.

They worked out a stylish and matching apparel range for women who want to climb hard and expect their gear to perform accordingly. It is made for female climbers and boulderers who want technical apparel that looks good on every occasion – from sports to chilling out to travelling.
