Well we are near the end of the regular season for ASHRAE Puget Sound Chapter!
We had a great May meeting which featured the installment of next year’s president, Michel Sotura. We had 11 other past presidents in attendance, and we presented the technical achievement awards to the 6 regional winners (congratulations and good luck with the Society awards!). The presentation by Therminex provided some very insightful approaches to heat reclaim for large commercial buildings.
While the season is nearly over, there are still a few things not to miss. Starting off, the TAC meeting this Thursday May 22nd will feature a program on Lab Pressurization and Fume Hood Control. Then in June 6th is the annual ASHRAE golf tournament, which raises money for Research Promotion. There are still opportunities available to sponsor a hole and to play so please sign up and encourage your colleagues to participate.
To top off the year we are excited to be hosting the ASHRAE Summer Conference. There’s still time to register, and if you want to volunteer as a monitor, your registration is free. Email [email protected] for more info. Also, we would like to encourage our YEA members to attend a technical committee meeting or two. You are welcome to sit in on the TC meetings - you do not need to be registered at the conference to attend. It’s a good opportunity to experience how ASHRAE’s technical standards are developed and to meet the members
involved in the committee, and to join a TC too!
I look forward to seeing you again soon.

Laboratories and clean rooms represent one of the most significant sources of energy consumption in today’s buildings. While it is necessary to maintain specific operating conditions in these applications to guarantee safety, there are many control options available to meet these specifications that often go unexplored. These options include anything from new energy efficient technologies, to alternative methodologies for fume hoods control, to occupancy scheduling of non-critical spaces. In order to build more successful and efficient laboratories, these topics as well as some common pit falls of laboratory design will be discussed.
Presenter: Will Kay
Will Kay serves as the Director of Manufacturing at American Auto-Matrix in their Export, PA headquarters. Over his 9 years at AAM he has held additional positions in Technical Services, Product Development, and Manufacturing Support. Prior to working for AAM, he worked for a Solution Integrator of AAM and Honeywell products as a design engineer. Over this time, he has been involved in numerous laboratory projects in the roles of project specification, engineering, device programming, and job commissioning.
Using his diverse background in BAS controls and a BS in Mechanical Engineering, he applies a wide angle approach to consider all aspects of the laboratory control industry.

Donate for Research PromotionSince 1919, ASHRAE has supported research to improve the quality of life. The Society funds thousands of projects addressing topics such as sound, duct design, the effect of oil in refrigerants, load calculations, thermal conductivity, simplified energy analysis procedures, weather data, refrigerant property data, fire and smoke control and solar design. The most significant ASHRAE research is in the areas of human comfort and the properties of materials and systems used in buildings and refrigeration systems.
