Reasons to Love Adelaide
AccessibilityAdelaide is well serviced with public transport including buses, trains and trams that will take you from the heart of the Central Business District (CBD) to the suburban areas of the city and beaches. There is even a free “city loop” bus and tram that will take you around the CBD.
It’s an easy city to walk or cycle around and as long as you bring your international driver’s licence, you’ll be able to drive here too.
Need to get to the airport to catch a flight or pick up a friend? The airport is only a 15 minute drive from the city.
All international students are entitled to a concession when buying public transport tickets. All you need is your student identification card.
04 TAFE SA | COURSE GUIDE 2015
Safe, welcoming and inclusiveAdelaide has low crime rates and in 2012 it was listed as the safest city in Australia*. With more than 120 nationalities represented in South Australia, it’s a multicultural hub, accepting of all races and religions. This means you are free and encouraged to practise your culture and faith without discrimination and you’ll have the opportunity to meet and learn about people from every nation.

The best of shopping and eatingFrom leading fashion labels and international brands to designer threads and funky, handmade gifts, you can find it all and more in Adelaide’s many retail strips and shopping malls. If local art and craft markets are more your thing, you will find plenty of them too.
If you are a food lover or enjoy international cuisine, you have come to the right city. In Adelaide we are internationally known for our love of all things food. The historical Central Market is where you will find the freshest local quality produce available. We also have plenty of restaurants and cafes from just about every cuisine you can think of, plus there’s likely to be a supermarket that sells food from your home country.
Festivals and eventsSouth Australia is known as the Festival State and Adelaide is home to over 400 major events throughout the year. The Adelaide Fringe Festival, Adelaide Festival of Arts, OzAsia, Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Womadelaide and Adelaide International Guitar Festivals are amongst some of the internationally recognised arts and music events. You will find many free events and festivals to attend, particularly during summer when Adelaide is buzzing with art, culture, food and wine events taking place all over the city.
EntertainmentAdelaide has thriving local live music, theatre and arts scenes. From local bands, music festivals, street performers, and visiting international artists, there’s always something to see, hear or experience.
SportSport plays a large role in South Australian life and Adelaide’s sporting calendar is brimming with major sporting events. There is cricket, soccer, tennis, car racing, swimming and cycling just to name a few.
Ride with the Santos Tour Down Under World Tour Cycling Race, see a cricket test at the historic Adelaide Oval or learn the sport of Australian rules football. Whatever sport you enjoy playing or watching, you’ll find it in Adelaide.
EducationProducing Nobel Laureates and Rhodes Scholars, Adelaide has a long and strong history of education stemming over 130 years. As well as TAFE SA, Adelaide is home to five world class universities: The University of Adelaide; University of South Australia; Flinders University of South Australia; Carnegie Mellon University (US); University College London (UK).
Our state’s capital, Adelaide, has a vibrant culture, relaxed living and an exciting future. Voted Australia’s most liveable city for 2 years running*, Adelaide is a safe, friendly and affordable metropolis with a bustling retail hub, world-class wine, rich culinary scene and a great appreciation of theatre and art. Many TAFE SA qualifications at Certificate IV, Diploma, and Advanced Diploma level can be used to apply for university entry.
Complete your degree faster
TAFE SA offers clear pathways and generous credit arrangements thanks to its strong connections with universities.
Many of TAFE SA’s Diploma, Advanced Diploma and Associate Degree qualifications can gain you credit towards your university degree.

Successful completion of a TAFE SA Diploma usually provides up to one year credit for university study and an Advanced Diploma usually provides up to a year and a half credit. Successful completion of an Associate Degree usually provides up to 2 years credit.
Credit transfer explained
Credit transfer is the formal recognition that components of some study/training programs are equivalent in content and level to the components of other training programs. TAFE SA has formal credit transfer arrangements in place with the university sector of South Australia.
Credit transfer results in:
> Automatic status or credit for eligible students in part(s) of a course/qualification
> Exemption from that part of the course
> Shorter course duration and lower cost
Status granted through credit transfer is recorded on your Student Academic Record. There are no fees when applying for recognition through credit transfer*. For further information go to: tafesa.edu.au/international/apply-international-student/ int-credit-transfer*Application fees may be required by your intended education provider.
The competitive edge

Why Study at TAFE SA?
10 TAFE SA | COURSE GUIDE 2015
“ TAFE SA is very affordable compared to doing a university course and with the flexibility of courses; it was the obvious choice for me.”Donna Chee – Malaysia Certificate IV in Hospitality, Diploma of Human Resource Management and Diploma of Business Management
Example of savingsJackson wants to complete the Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical and Electronic) at the University of Adelaide. This will cost him around $30,000 (AUD) for each year of the four year degree or around $120,000 (AUD) for the whole degree.
Jackson has chosen to study the Associate Degree in Electronic Engineering at TAFE SA which costs around $15,400 (AUD) a year or around $30,800 (AUD) for the two year course. When Jackson completes his Associate Degree he can apply for entry to the Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical and Electronic) at Adelaide University and will gain two years credit. This means that he will begin university in the 3rd year of the degree and take just two years to complete his degree.
At the end of the four years, Jackson will have two qualifications, the Associate Degree in Electronic Engineering and the Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical and Electronic).
This is what Jackson’s dual qualification will cost him compared to if he had entered university directly:
TAFE + University University
1st year TAFE SA $15,400* 1st year university $30,000*
2nd year TAFE SA $15,400 2nd year university $30,000
3rd year university $30,000 3rd year university $30,000
4th year university $30,000 4th year university $30,000
Total $90,800 (AUD) Total $120,000 (AUD)
Indicative Saving $29,200 (AUD)
*Course costs current at time of printing. Check TAFE SA and university websites for current courses costs
Complete your degree for less
TAFE SA and Adelaide are the affordable study choice. TAFE SA tuition fees are competitive. A completed TAFE SA qualification may also help students to complete their degree faster and generally at a lower cost by providing credit toward their university degree.
The indicative cost per year for TAFE SA Diploma or Advanced Diploma courses is $12,000 ($AUD) and the indicative cost per year for most courses at South Australian universities is around $30,000 ($AUD).
This means that for every year credit is received from a university for your TAFE SA qualification, there is an indicative cost saving of around $18,000 ($AUD) per year.

Where to live? When deciding where to live consider:
> How far away your campus and other facilities (workplace, sport, library, shops and markets etc.) are
> Costs (rent and cost of travel)
> Lifestyle (if you would like to live in the city, suburbs or close to the beach)
> Preferred living arrangements (if you like to live alone or would like to share with other students.)
The most popular types of student accommodation are student housing (purpose-built apartments or dormitory style residences) and private rental accommodation (apartment or house)
Accommodation typesStudent housing
Adelaide has many accommodation options specifically for students. These include dormitory style accommodation, shared apartments (individual bedrooms with shared facilities) or individual studio style apartments. Most of these provide students with a private room (so you can concentrate on your studies) while sharing other facilities in a friendly environment where you can mingle with other students from all over the world.
Most student housing is located in the city or near TAFE SA campuses, saving on transport costs and placing you close to facilities.
Many of these offer inclusions such as internet access, utilities, fully furnished apartments and they may offer additional services such as meals or laundry.
AccommodationAdelaide has a diverse range of accommodation options to suit all requirements and budgets.
Regency International House, foyer
24 TAFE SA | COURSE GUIDE 2015
Regency International House
Regency International House is located on the TAFE SA Regency Campus, just 15 minutes from the Adelaide Central Business District and provides housing for international students.
Close to public transport, shopping centres and a wide variety of multicultural restaurants, it’s the perfect location for international students studying at many of TAFE SA’s metropolitan campuses.
Security
With a full-time manager overseeing all matters relating to students, and a member of staff on site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, you can be sure that there will always be someone around should an emergency arise.
Comfort
Each villa at Regency International House is light, bright and airy and comes fully furnished. Villas are more than 100 square metres in size and house four students – all with their own private bedroom including a telephone, computer and wireless internet connection. Each villa has two ensuite bathrooms, a sitting room and a kitchenette for light meals or a late-night snack. Laundry facilities are also included and are shared within each complex consisting of four villas.
Care
Included in the weekly accommodation rate are 3 meals a day which are prepared and made on-site in the commercial kitchen. Students make their selection from the cafeteria-style kitchen and eat, usually with friends, in the communal dining room, or if they study at a campus other than Regency, lunch can be packed for them to take away. The menu is varied and changes on a regular basis taking into account different tastes and cultural diversity.
Also included in the monthly rate are all utility costs (water, electricity etc.) and cleaning of the villas once a week so that students have more time to focus on what’s really important.
Lifestyle
The student common room, dining room, tutorial room and computer suite (all open 24 hours a day) are located in the main Administration block. Other facilities include a Muslim prayer room and a games room – a popular retreat for students, with a pool table, table-tennis and other activities available within it. Amongst the landscaped surrounds of Regency International House are basketball and tennis courts available for the sole use of RIH residents.
Regency International House also organises and promotes social activities and outings for students on weekends and holidays which helps to balance the demands of study and assists in building a friendly and social community amongst the residents allowing students to form friendships for life.
For further information about Regency International House visit: tafesa.edu.au/international/accommodation
Homestay
Homestay is where you live with an Australian host family. Host families are located all over Adelaide and throughout the state.
These are welcoming environments where you have the chance to really experience Australian life and practice your English language skills.
Most homestay hosts offer dining options which may mean that your meals are prepared for you or you may need to provide and prepare your own food.
As a homestay student you will have a bedroom with linen, a place to study and will share the bathroom/s, kitchen and other facilities with the homestay family.
All homestay families are different; they may be a couple, a family with children or a single person. Many Australian families have pets including dogs. You will be a part of the household and so will need to look after your own needs and may be responsible for keeping your room tidy and doing your laundry.
For further information on homestays visit:
homestaynetwork.org
studentliving.com.au
unilodge.com.au/adelaide
Private rental
A private rental allows you to choose where you want to live - in the city, near your campus, friends or work or maybe near the beach. You’ll need to pay your weekly rent and utilities such as electricity, gas, water and telephone.
The style of accommodation (house or apartment) and rent payable will vary from suburb to suburb. You may need to sign a rental agreement (lease) with the owner (landlord) and pay some rent in advance (bond). Once you have signed a lease you are a tenant of the property. As a tenant you have certain rights under Australian law and your rental bond is refundable to you at the end of your lease if the lease conditions are met. For further information about your rights as a tenant visit: cbs.sa.gov.au/wcm/rentingletting/
For a listing of rental properties visit:
realestate.com.au
domain.com.au
Students often share a house and you can expect to have a bedroom to yourself, but share the rest of the house and expenses (electricity, gas and water) with the other people living there. If you rent a room in a share house, you may pay more if the room is furnished or utilities are included in the weekly rental cost. Sharing can be the cheapest option but it is important to have a clear idea of how chores and bills will be divided. It should also be noted that share accommodation can sometimes mean you are sharing a room with someone with little to no privacy (such as a backpackers hostel).
