As of June 9, 434 homes (59.3%) had contributed to support of the 2009 Deputy Constable Program—we appreciate your contribution to our neighborhood security! And a special thanks to the 138 homes (19%) that have paid already for the 2010 Deputy Constable Program; this facilitates the planning process for 2010 since the decision to participate in 2010 must be made this year. It’s not too late to send in your payment to support our constable program. Our suggested contribution is $175/home, but contributions in any amount are welcome, so please give what you can. We have recently had numerous burglaries of cars, backyards and attempted break-ins at homes, so the more security we have, the better. For information about making a Constable contribution, contact Jim Worthing at 713-688-4315 or [email protected] or log on to www.shepherdparkplaza.com to download a contribution form. Report Any Problems—Even if you experience a small crime, it’s important that all problems be reported to the constable so that they can be aware of issues in our area. Even if you contact HPD, you should also contact the constable to make a report. You may also wish to change your alarm system call number to the Constable Dispatch. Use Vacation Watch—Constable contributors can put their homes on Vacation Watch with our deputy by using the form found at www.shepherdparkplaza.com. Our deputy and other officers will keep a special eye out on your home while you are away. Try to get the form in several days before you plan to leave so you can be put on the patrol schedule.

Men’s Group to Meet July 9 by Chuck Blesener

The SPP Men’s Group will meet again for their regularly scheduled luncheon at 11:30 am on Thursday, July 9 at Yank Sing Chinese Buffet. The luncheons are open to all men of the neighborhood with no rules, dues or officers—just a friendly bunch of guys getting together for lunch and conversation. The group will take their annual summer museum bus trip on Thursday, July 30, with lunch at Brady’s Landing. All trips are open to both men and women of the neighborhood over age 50 as space is available.

Support SPP with Annual Dues! By Jim Worthing, Membership Coordinator THANK YOU to the 397 (54.2%) homes that have paid their 2009/10 SPPCC dues.Your $25.00 dues payment helps maintain the

outstanding neighborhood we all call home. The Shepherd Park Plaza Civic Club is comprised of residents who generously volunteer their time and talents to help preserve the quality of life we’ve come to enjoy. While our association is volunteer-run, it does take money to make some things happen. A review of past patterns of dues payment participation indicates there are 173 homes that usually support the SPPCC who have not yet sent in their payments. PLEASE keep me busy this summer by sending in those payments. If you’ve not yet paid your dues, you can download an application at www.shepherdparkplaza.com. If you have questions, please contact Jim Worthing at 713-688-4315 or [email protected].

Automated Recycling Coming to SPP SPP will join the City of Houston’s automated recycling pilot program and transition from manual to automated curbside collection. Each home will receive one 96-gallon green automated cart similar to the black automated garbage can. Residents will be able to put all of their unsorted recyclables into one city-provided container. While we cannot provide a specific date on which our participation will begin, the City has indicated that the transition will occur in July.

Although the new cart is much bigger than the current 18-gallon green bin, it has wheels, making it much easier to move to the curb. The cart also has a lid, which contains the recyclables and keeps them from getting wet. A list of items that can go in the cart is printed on the lid. This new service allows participants to recycle glass, which was not previously collected curbside. The recyclables will be taken to the Abitibi Bowater facility that has automated sorting capabilities.

This new service makes it easier for residents to recycle; thereby increasing recycling and helping the City divert waste from landfills. Collection costs are reduced because collection is automated, collection routes are serviced more efficiently and worker injuries are expected to decrease because of automated collection.

The green recycling cart must not be used as a trash can. No garbage, yard trimmings, trash, food or hazardous waste should be placed in the cart. No plastic bags, meat trays, pizza boxes, Styrofoam or broken glass can be accepted because of contamination. The following items can be placed in the green cart:

Police Beat By Ted Dwigans & Chuck Blesener Taking Count—The April Positive Interaction Program (PIP) meeting focused on the 2010 Census. The Census is mandated by the Constitution and is instrumental in redistricting, apportionment and distribution of federal funds. Approximately 300 billion dollars are spent annually and the Census determines how much and where these monies are spent. The data collected helps to get resources for city and county projects such as roads, freeways, healthcare, schools, special education, to name a few. By law, the Census Bureau cannot share an individual’s census questionnaire responses with anyone, including other federal agencies and law enforcement entities. All U.S. residents must be counted – people of all races and ethnic groups, both citizens and non-citizens. Preventing Gangs—In May, the PIP meeting featured an explanation of the G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training) Program. Officers Paul Augustine and Jason Goldwater teach this program in some of our middle schools. Directed toward the 5th and 6th graders, this program was originally started in the 7th grade, but officers soon learned that by this grade, too many students were already involved in gang

City Project Approved to Alleviate SPP Flooding On May 20, SPP President Tom Dornak attended a meeting at City Hall called by District A City Council member Toni Lawrence to discuss flooding incidents in subdivisions in her District. Representatives from City of Houston, Public Works Department, Maintenance and Engineering Divisions were in attendance as well as representatives from approximately 20 subdivisions. All subdivision representatives were able to air their concerns about recent flooding in their neighborhoods. Tom spoke and presented a subdivision plat indicating flooding reports gathered from resident input along with photos and copies of all the emails and CIPs (Capital Improvement Plans) residents provided. During the meeting, Daniel Menendez, Deputy Director of Public Works, Engineering & Construction, announced that SPP is a part of a recently approved CIP (Capital Improvement Project) for year 2010 to address flooding in our area. Design begins in July 2009. The Project Number, also referred to as the CIP number is M-0285. While this project will not begin in earnest for some time, we hope that it will generate the attention that our area deserves. We will continue to monitor the project and provide you with updates as they become available.

Input from our residents to prepare Tom for this meeting was overwhelming. It seems to be clear that flooding of streets and property has increased over the last 10 years. Thanks to all those that took the time to generate a letter to District A staff concerning your flooding experience, as this is what is required to get improvement projects approved. Approximately 80 residents contributed emails and/or project request forms to the city. Public Works Engineering & Construction Department now has this valuable data in their possession to engineer improvements.

Info from the City of Houston web site on this project is below:

Having a Say —Former SPP resident Shelley Correll, daughter of Shirley Barrett, had the honor of visiting the White House to participate in the new White House Council on Women and Girls that President Obama created. This council is headed up by Valerie Jarrett, one of Obama's senior advisors. Since Shelley is an associate professor of Sociology at Stanford University and specializes in gender studies, she was a perfect choice to be considered as part of this council. And as a bonus, during the meeting she met First Lady Michelle Obama. Keep up the good work Shelley!

Emma Langley, daughter of Robert and Greta, graduated from St. Agnes Academy in May. She will continue her education at the University of Dallas.

The Stork’s Been Busy! Jacob Michael Matula arrived on May 11. He was welcomed by parents Mike and Kelly and older sisters Macy and Margo. And Reese Louise Inderrieden made a Memorial Day to remember when she arrived on May 25. She is a sweet daughter to Creston and Holly and sister to Joshua.

Congratulations Graduates! Trevor Rubenstahl, son of George and Beverly, graduated with a BS in Biology from the University of Texas at Austin. Next fall he will pursue a Master’s in Environmental Science at Texas Christian University where he has been awarded a teaching assistantship.

On the Mend—We’re glad that Judy Bunosky has bounced back after recent surgery and is feeling better!

Centennial Celebration—Julie, Shawn & Cash Landreth just returned from Ohio where 80 friends & relatives gathered to celebrate Julie's grandmother's 100th birthday. Margaret Ann Young moved to America from Belfast as a little girl and is still totally with it, according to Julie, who hopes she's inherited some of her grandma's vitality. She's still enjoying life and flew to Texas to visit Julie and her family earlier this year.

Durham Readers Disco—Durham Elementary School students celebrated the success of reaching their reading goal for the year. Principal Dan Breiman challenged the students to read 20 million words as part of the Accelerated Reader program. The students read 24, 837,583 words and Principal Breiman disco danced on stage in full costume to “Staying Alive” as staff members joined him dressed as the Village People. The top students from each grade level participated and joined the dancing. The celebration also served as the kickoff for the HISD Millionaire Club summer reading program where all Durham students promised to read at least 5 books, working towards the district’s goal of a million books. Preliminary results indicate that Durham will receive an Exemplary ranking for 2008-2009. Way to go!

activities. The G.R.E.A.T. Program is a school-based, law enforcement officer-instructed classroom curriculum. With prevention as its primary objective, the program is intended as an immunization against delinquency, youth violence, and gang membership. G.R.E.A.T. lessons focus on providing life skills to students to help them avoid using delinquent behavior and violence to solve problems. The G.R.E.A.T. Program offers a continuum of components for students and their families. License Plate Recognition – In 2007, HPD began equipping some of its patrol units with the Automatic License Plate Recognition System. Today there are seventeen units equipped with the stand-alone systems at a cost of $20,000 per car. Each car has four infrared cameras that can read license plates even n the dark or in adjacent lanes regardless of direction of travel. The system can read four plates simultaneously on four cars. The computer controlling the system is in the trunk and data is displayed on the dash-mounted screen already in the cars. The officer is alerted immediately if a license plate is read on a vehicle with outstanding warrants or that was reported as involved in a crime. Updated software is loaded into the units at the beginning of each shift, but the driver can manually load info such as Amber alerts, crimes just committed, or partial plate numbers. The units are distributed throughout the department with all divisions having them.

What’s Happening Around Houston? By Carol Jean Hebert The Heritage Society is the city's only outdoor, interactive historic museum and park. Nestled in 10 acres of beautiful green parkland in the heart of downtown Houston, The Heritage Society boasts nine historic structures dating from 1823 to 1905. Each historic structure is authentically restored to reflect its original magnificence. Each year, The Heritage Society hosts countless school-aged children and visitors from around the world who come to learn about the families and the lifestyles that inhabited these historic homes - what life was really like in frontier times for early settlers in Houston. The mission of the Heritage Society is to preserve the complete history of the community and region through preservation and restoration of historic struc-tures, exhibition of historical artifacts and presentation of education programs which focus on Houston and Harris County's diverse past and its relation-ship to the present and future. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm and on Sundays from 1pm to 4 pm. Admission to the museum is free.
