SoftStar Muse GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR ASTROLOGY SOFTWARE

AstrolDeluxe Platinum 10.0by John Halloranhttps://www.halloran.com/$300

More than three years ago, I reviewed AstrolDeluxe Platinum in the Aug./Sept. 2016 issue of The Mountain Astrologer. Since the software’s initial release, its author has continually improved it, culminating with the latest version 10. AstrolDeluxe Platinum runs on Windows 7, 8, and 10 and on a Mac using Windows emulation software (e.g., Win-dows with Bootcamp, Parallels, etc.). Don’t let the old-school graphics and interface fool you — AstrolDeluxe Platinum is a powerful astrology program packed with unique capabilities. It includes a database of 93,800 charts, categorized by vocation and other major life themes, to use with its built-in research tools. AstrolDeluxe Platinum can now import charts from Solar Fire, as well as from other astrology programs. The program can also run the company’s superlative quality add-on reports, including new reports for declination aspects and minor (45° and 135°) hard aspects (and reports on Chiron, the Black Moon, and Aspect Patterns). Many of these reports are groundbreaking, resulting from years of painstaking research by the author. Perhaps the crown jewel of the latest version is the Nested Time aspects for the year. Based upon the book of the same title by astrologer Arthur M. Young, this feature al-lows you to view a list of astrological aspects with keywords for an entire year, and click on an aspect to get an expanded interpretation. You can use the Life History feature to add life events into the right side of the screen, in order to see corre-spondences between the sky and the life. Among the techniques employed in Nested Time are Progressions, Solar Arc Directions, Ascendant Arc and Ver-tex Arc Directions, and transits by Saturn through Pluto. You can add Jupiter transits, transiting and progressed Chiron, Transits to Progressed, Classical Primary Directions,

and Minor and Tertiary Progressions. You can also turn off Ascendant Arc and Vertex Arc Directions, and use your own set of natal points and aspects. The Vocational Ranking screen is quite brilliant, determin-ing the most likely careers for a chart’s owner by comparing that person’s planetary aspects to those in the vocational chart files. The Graphic Aspectarian can create monthly and yearly graphs showing the individual and cumulative influ-ences of transits. You can select whether to create mundane (transit-to-transit) or personal (transit-to-natal) graphs, and which points to use. Anyone wishing to explore group dynamics will enjoy the Group Signatures section of the Research Charts module. You can search groups of up to 300 charts for the proportions of houses, signs, hemisphere & quadrants, house modalities & elements, and sign modalities & elements, as well as view a graph of Planetary Strengths for each group. If you click on any positive or negative part of the Planetary Strength graph, you can see which aspects comprise that part of the graph. And you can name, print, and save the results. The Map of Degree Strengths is another unique fea-ture of AstrolDeluxe Platinum 10. This generates a wheel showing the strength of every degree in a chart. The map is created by calculating how many planets will aspect each de-gree. There’s a table showing the six strongest degrees, and by clicking on one, its interpretation is displayed. Two added tables show the positive, negative, and cumulative strength of each of the houses and each of the signs. New basic capabilities include being able to view up to four Separate Wheels on one page, a detailed Aspect Grid, and the Life Diagram, a progressed graphic ephemeris screen with an adjustable harmonic and date range. The author has thoughtfully included in the new version’s program manual an essay on how and why astrology works (with an extensive bibliography); the essay is titled “Intellec-tual Astrology.” AstrolDeluxe Platinum offers a unique set of techniques and research features. It’s no wonder, given its phenomenal reports and many innovative functions, that the program has so many fans.

New Yorker Article Spotlights the New Generation of Astrologers The New Yorker magazine published an article by Chris-tine Smallwood, “Astrology in the Age of Uncertainty,” which delves into today’s approach to utilizing astrology. (Initially published online on October 21, 2019, the article was re-leased in print under a new title, “Starstruck,” on October 28, 2019.) If you’re looking for a clear, comprehensive view of the whys and wherefores of astrology’s expanding presence and acceptance, Ms. Smallwood may have created precisely what you seek. She uses the backdrop of a live-streamed Astrology 101 event, hosted by New York astrologer Aliza Kelly, to usher the reader into a meaningful narrative of the evolution of astrology’s place in society, from its early roots until now. At the core, Smallwood writes, “what attracts most people to astrology today has more to do with psychology … [with the birth chart] as the representation of the psyche.” She illustrates how the language of astrology offers a key to an individual’s self-acceptance and understanding. Also featured in this piece is an excellent review of the influence of the Internet and the widespread popularity of as-trology apps. Profiling the presence of companies such as Co-Star, the Pattern, and VICE’s Astro Guide, the author uncovers how many of these digitized information and con-nection sources operate behind the scenes. For those who wonder whether credence is given to the classes necessary for a person to develop as a professional astrologer or author, Ms. Smallwood offers a concise explanation of that experi-ence, too — sharing her observations of a class conducted by astrologers Anne Ortelee and Mark Wolz. Astrologer and social activist Chani Nicholas and several “astro-poets” are included as well. Kudos for a delightful and positively provocative read!

In Brief A CBS This Morning television broadcast on November 15, 2019 aired a feature story about why millennials show such a strong interest in astrology. The segment, “Written in the Stars,” was reported by CBS News correspondent Vladi-mir Deuthiers; he spoke with a number of people whose level of interest in astrology ranged from hobbyist to dedicated devotee, sharing how they incorporate astrological informa-tion and advice into their lives. He stressed that astrology is much more than the Sun-sign columns, and described por-

tions of his interviews (and readings) with astrologers Chani Nicholas and Aliza Kelly, noting that each provided sig-nificant information they gleaned from exploring his natal astrological chart. He commented that the experience had a positive and “profound effect” on his view of astrology. Another ending to report: Editor-in-Chief Ronnie Grish-man has written that Dell Horoscope Magazine is closing its publication. The last issue will be March/April 2020. After 85 years, we will certainly miss this much-loved publication. Ms. Grishman reminds us: “To everything, turn, turn, turn, [there is a season].” Giving a clear example of utilizing the tools of the Internet filtered by astrological themes, author Alice Finn describes how she employed astrology in her romantic life. In her article, “I dated by zodiac compatibility for a month to see if my romantic destiny could be so simple,” published online, Ms. Finn shares her hopes of finding a workable re-lationship by including astrological information in her filters when using online matching. It’s an honest and informative piece! (URL: https://www.wellandgood.com/good-advice/astrology-compatibility-dating-app/amp/) Thanks to TMA reader Wendy Wywrot for providing this link.

In Memoriam Prolific writer, astrologer, and mundane astrology master André Barbault died on October 7, 2019. He was born in Champignelles, France on October 1, 1921, and de-voted his life to the study and practice of astrology. Known for his spot-on predictions of world events, he was the au-thor of more than 50 books and also created one of the earliest computer-generated astrological reports, including the well-known Astroflash. Two of his books, Planetary Cycles: Mundane Astrology and The Value of Astrology, were translated from their original French into English by the Astrological Association of Great Britain. Recently featured in TMA’s “Astrology News” (Dec. 2019/Jan. 2020), astrologer and entertainer Walter Mer-cado died in San Juan, Puerto Rico on November 2, 2019 of kidney failure, after a period of poor health. Born April 25, 1931, Mercado was known for his flamboyant presence

9. Latency is the delay it takes data to travel between its source and desti-nation, measured in milliseconds. Once a connection is made, bandwidth determines how much of the data can be transferred per second. Low latency and high bandwidth are desired in Internet connections.

10. Visible light, which is part of the electromagnetic spectrum, was known about for most of history. But it was Herschel’s measurement of the tempera-ture of infrared radiation in 1800 that showed us there was more to discover beyond visible light. His findings started a century of discovery about the var-ious frequencies of the spectrum, with the measurement of gamma rays in the early 1900s being the final discovery.

Always optimis-tic in his presentations, he was a groundbreaker in the world of the media, ultimately finding fame for his astrology segment on Spanish-language television. A tribute to Mercado, written by Susan Miller, was featured in Time Magazine (November 19, 2019). Miller wrote: “All astrologers stand on his shoul-ders, for he led the way.” When asked how he wanted to be remembered, he said: “Walter Mercado means love, peace, and understanding, means compassion.” Australian astrologer Ed Tamplin passed away on Octo-ber 7, 2019. Along with his partner, Sherrynne, he directed the Sirius School of Astrology. He was active in the Federa-tion of Australian Astrologers (FAA) in many capacities over the years, and widely known for his “Eye in the Sky” column in the FAA Journal. A sought-after speaker, his earlier life ex-perience included radio broadcasting, and he always seemed comfortable dealing with the media and the public.
