Secondary HSIE eNewsletter October-November, 2015

Dear colleagues,

Welcome to Term 4. We hope you have had a lovely break. We hope you are having a great term.

The next NSW HSIE State-wide Faculty Meeting held via Adobe Connect is scheduled for Tuesday, 24 November 2015, 4:00-4:30pm. These meetings are a quick snapshot of the support being provided by the Secondary Education team, an update from BOSTES, and a chance to ask questions to State Office advisers (that we may answer live or research and get back to you). Whilst it will be same address that we always have had, we will send you the link for this closer to the date.

We are underway with the second draft of the Stage 4-5 Geography K-10 teaching and learning sequence. This document has been written by a rural community of schools and edited by another community of schools. It is hoped that the next draft of this document will be released for you to consider as part of your Geography K-10 implementation process at our staff meeting in Week 8 of this term. It is a substantial document of some 70 pages, is a non-text book specific approach to teaching the Geography K-10 syllabus document, and includes the teaching and learning sequence, and assessment tasks and associated marking criteria. It is, and will remain, in a word format for you to amend, adapt and use as required.

Geography K-10

A reminder that the Geography K-10 syllabus is out and we are now in the mandatory familiarisation stage of implementation. Secondary schools are not to implement the new Geography K-10 syllabus until 2017. Please see the BOSTES website for further information.

Geography in a Billabong is, however, a PowerPoint presentation that we urge all teachers to look at. If you were not at the Adobe session for this session, please don’t hesitate to email me and I will forward you the presentation as a starting point.

Lesson ideasBlown Away

‘Blown Away’ a documentary about Cyclone Tracy that has been shown on ABC1. It is accompanied by an extensive study guide – hyperlinked in the title above. It is based on in-depth eyewitness interviews, immersive animation, and extensive archival material including extraordinary newsreel and stunning photographs, intensified by an evocative musical score. It has syllabus links to geography and history, which are spelled out in the study guide.

Stage 5 History – The Modern World and Australia: Core Study Depth Study 4: Rights and Freedoms

This unit of work was written for Inverell High School by Cath Jeffrey. It is to be used as a guide to the teaching of Aboriginal history using a local resources model. It is published on www.hsiensw.com under Latest News.

Sydney Jewish Museum 2106 Exhibitions

The following exhibitions are scheduled for 2016 and may be of interest to you, particularly for History 7-10.

1. Anne Frank: Let Me Be Myself - examining the life of Anne Frank, which includes an overview of the history of Nazism as well as a particular focus on the Frank family's plight.

2. Signs of Life: showcasing the letters and postcards sent by those destined for the 'Final Solution'. This collection reveals the personal dimension of the Jewish experience during the Holocaust and illustrates that even through the darkest tragedies, hope and humanity remain.

Professional learning opportunities

2015 Aboriginal Studies Association Teachers Conference Friday 4 December 2015The Big Dig Archaeology Education Centre. The conference includes a Tribal Warrior Cultural harbor Experience as well as a Keynote address on Global Perspectives. A Connecting to Country cultural experience will be a highlight. Teacher relief may be provided. This course has been accredited. In collaboration with the teachers conference is an HSC student conference ($40/student). Connecting students to the world - Asia Education Foundation (AEF) Monday 19 October 2015This conference explores how to use technologies to connect your classroom to the world; to plan global projects for students to develop intercultural understanding and 21st century capabilities and to build your knowledge of why and how students can develop global connections. It is a one-day professional learning opportunity for New South Wales teachers through the AEF’s BRIDGE School Partnerships Project

Australian Museum Teacher Open Night Thursday 22 October 2015Teachers are invited to an exclusive viewing of the museums new Crystal Hall and their three new exhibitions:

Bayala Nura: Yarning Country - celebrates the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures Garrigarrang: Sea Country - explores the special relationship that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have with water Wild Planet - stimulates thought about themes of global biodiversity, evolution, extinction and conservation.

Teaching the HSC course (Year 12) in Business Studies of Legal Studies for the first time?October 24, 2015 9:ooam – 3:15pm Kooringal High School This course will be presented by experiences teachers for:

beginning teachers and experienced teachers who are teaching the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards NSW (BOSTES NSW) HSC Course (Year 12) in Business Studies or Legal Studies for the first time.

teachers who may have already taught one of these courses in the past but who need a refresher course. teachers who intend to teach one of these courses in the near future.

The Business Studies and Legal Studies courses will be run concurrently at the same venue. Cost is free for members of EBE or RivSSTA or $100 for non-members. For further details and an enrolment form, please email admin@ebe.nsw.edu.au

Refugees from Syria – Cultural Orientation Resource Centre (COR)

The COR Center is a non-government organisation that focusses on information about refugee education. It is funded by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration. The COR Center works closely with U.S. government agencies, international organisations, U.S. refugee resettlement agencies, formerly resettled refugees, Technical Assistance providers, community partners, mainstream service providers, and area specialists to assess needs and develop relevant and timely online and hard-copy orientation resources and group-specific materials. The COR Center has published background information on Syrian refugees and other cultural groups.

Honouring Australian Vietnam Veterans Competition

On 18 August 2016, Australia will commemorate Vietnam Veterans’ Day and the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. Some 60,000 servicemen and women were deployed overseas and over 500 died in what was the longest conflict of the twentieth century in which our nation participated.

In recognition of this significant anniversary, the Australian Government will honour the service and sacrifice of our Vietnam veterans through a range of commemorative initiatives including a one-off competition for Years 9 and 10 students, Honouring Australian Vietnam Veterans. This competition, which is now open for entries, encourages students to investigate the contribution of Australians who served during the Vietnam War and reflect on the importance of remembering their service.

NSW DoE HSIE K-12 Yammer

Do have a look at, ask a question or post a comment on the HSIE K-12 Yammer group – for both primary and secondary teachers of HSIE (inclusive of history and geography). We decided that there was great value in primary and secondary teachers contributing to this

discussion forum as there is a great deal we can learn from each other, with the K-10 History and Geography syllabus continuums. Back to top
