Thanksgiving is a national holiday which is celebrated mainly in the USA and Canada. The custom began as a way to give thanks for a plentiful harvest. On Thanksgiving, which is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States, families traditionally get together and share a wonderful feast. This is a big part of American culture, so if you have any American friends, they would no doubt appreciate a good wish from you at this time of year.

Before a meal

Perhaps your colleague is about to head out to lunch. You aren’t able to join them, but you want to be friendly and polite, so you might say one of the following:

当同事们正要外出午餐,你不能一起

去,但又想表示友好且有礼貌,就可以

像下面这样说:

• “Enjoy your lunch”

“愿你好好享用午餐”

• “Have a nice lunch”

“祝午餐愉快”

If you are actually eating together, a popular phrase is “Bon appetit”, which means, “enjoy your meal”.

This is a French phrase, but it is also commonly used by English speakers.

如果你们是在一起用餐,一个常用的句

子是“Bon appetit(祝好胃口)”,

意思是“愿你好好享用”。这句是法

语,但说英语的人也经常使用。

Before doing an important task

在处理重要的事务以前

There are so many daily tasks that we get nervous or apprehensive about. It could be a job interview, a presentation at work or an exam; whatever it is, friends and colleagues always appreciate a kind word or two beforehand. The following phrases always work well in these situations:

有很多日常生活中的事务会让我们紧张

或忧虑。可能是一次工作面试、工作上

的一次演讲或是考试;不论是哪样,朋

友和同事总会对事前的一两句鼓励的话

表示感激。下面的句子就很适用于这些

场合:

• “Good luck”

(祝你)好运

• “Lots of luck”

好运连连

• “I wish you luck, but I’m sure you won’t need it.”

祝你好运,但我确信你根本不需要运

气。

There are also some popular idioms for wishing people luck. One of the most commonly used is “fingers crossed”. Crossing one’s fingers for good luck is believed to be religious in origin, and is most likely based on the Christian or pagan beliefs in the important symbolism of the cross. In the short conversation below, Michael uses this idiom to wish his friend luck.

还有一些流行的、表示祝别人好运的

俗语。最常用的之一就是“ f ingers crossed(祈祷)”。用交叉手指来祈

祷好运通常被认为起源于宗教,并很有

可能是来自基督教及其分支教义对十字

架的重要象征意义的信仰。在下面的简

短对话中,Michael就用了这个俗语来

祝朋友好运。

Michael: When is your exam?

你的考试是什么时候?

Tom: On Friday. I’m a little nervous. I don’t think I have studied enough.

周五。我有点紧张。我觉得我学得不够啊。

Page 13: CONTENTS...When wishing someone a good Thanksgiving in person, you will probably say something simple, like “Happy Thanksgiving!” or “Have a great Thanksgiving day!”. However,

Michael: I’m sure you’ll be ok. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you.

我肯定你没问题啦。我会一直为你祈祷

好运的。

Tom: Thanks.

多谢啦。

Crossing one’s fingers can have another meaning, which is not so good-natured. Sometimes, children cross their fingers when telling a lie, in the belief that doing so will excuse their dishonest act. Similarly, children might cross their fingers when making a promise, as they believe that it will invalidate the promise and they will therefore be under no obligation to keep it.

手指交叉还有另外一层不那么好的含

义。有时,小孩在说谎时会交叉手指,

他们相信这样做会使他们不诚实的行为

得到宽恕。类似地,小孩在许下承诺时

也可能会交叉手指,因为他们认为这样

会使承诺失效,那么他们也就因此没有

守信的义务了。

Another popular idiom for wishing someone good luck is “break a leg”. It is believed that this phrase originated in the world of theatre. Actors, who are known for their superstitious tendencies,

believed that wishing someone “good luck” would actually result in bad luck. Therefore, the phrase “break a leg” was sometimes used instead before the actors took the stage. Nowadays, this phrase is commonly used in many different contexts. Let’s take a look at the short conversation below.

祝 某 人 好 运 的 另 一 个 常 用 的 俗 语 是

“break a leg(祝断腿)”。这句话

通常被认为是源自于戏剧这一行。一些

因迷信而出名的演员认为祝某人“好

运”实际会导致坏运气降临。因此,在

演员登台前,有时会用“祝断腿”这句

话来代替(祝好运)。如今,这句俗语

已经广泛使用于很多不同的场合。咱们

看看下面这段短篇对话。

Michael: My job interview is this afternoon.

我的工作面试就在今天下午。

Tom: Oh really? Well, break a leg.

哦真的吗?那么,祝你好运。

Michael: Thank you. I’m pretty nervous.

谢谢。我特别紧张。

Tom: You’ll be fine.

你会没事的。

Page 14: CONTENTS...When wishing someone a good Thanksgiving in person, you will probably say something simple, like “Happy Thanksgiving!” or “Have a great Thanksgiving day!”. However,

Sometimes, what we want in life is simply too far beyond our reach. Perhaps you would rather be relaxing on a tropical beach instead of slaving away in your office today, or maybe you’d prefer it if you never had to work again. It is when speaking of these unlikely dreams when “wish” serves one of its main functions in the English language. In this section, we will go through how to use the word “wish” when describing what we want but unfortunately cannot have.

在生活中,有时候我们想要的就是那么

难以实现。或许你会幻想今天能在热带

沙滩上无所事事而不是在办公室埋头苦

干,亦或你希望永远不用再工作。在英

语中,一旦说到了这些不太可能实现的

白日梦时,“wish”就可以表达它的主

要语义之一。在这部分,我们会剖析如

何使用“wish”一词来描述我们想要却

无法拥有的东西。

Present wishes

对于当前的愿望

As you browse a local estate agent’s website and your mind fills with lofty dreams of idyllic country estates, you turn to your wife or husband and say:

在你浏览本地地产中介的网站时,你脑

海中充满的都是美妙的乡间庄园梦,这

时你对妻子或老公说:

• “I wish we had 50 million dollars so that we could buy our dream house.”

我真希望我们能有5千万美元,那样就

能买起我们梦想中的大房子了。

Grammatical structure: I wish + simple past tense. (note that we are not really talking about the past. This is something we want to have now, but it is simply impossible) Let’s check out a couple more examples…

语法结构:I wish + 一般过去时。(注

意我们并不是真的在谈论过去的事。这

时我们想现在拥有的东西,只是根本不

现实而已)让我们多看几个例子……

“I wish I am taller” (WRONG)

“I wish I were taller” (CORRECT) (note that we tend

to say “I wish I were” rather than “I wish I was”)

“我真希望我能再高一点”(正

确)(注意我们会说“ I w i s h I were”而不是“I wish I was”)

“I wish I can play the guitar as well as you.” (WRONG)

“I wish I could play the guitar as well as you.” (CORRECT)

“我真希望我能像你弹吉他弹得一样

好。”(正确)

Sentences like these are often used in desperation when complaining about things we doubt will change any time soon. For example:

这类句子往往用在无可奈何的情境下,

我们用来抱怨一些短期不会改变的事

情。例如

• “I wish it would stop raining.” (note the use of “would” instead of “will”)

要是不下雨就好了。(注意句中用了

“would”而不是“will”)

Or 或者

• “I wish my roommate would help out with the housework more often.”

Wishing for the Impossible 无法企及的愿望

Page 15: CONTENTS...When wishing someone a good Thanksgiving in person, you will probably say something simple, like “Happy Thanksgiving!” or “Have a great Thanksgiving day!”. However,

我的室友要是能多帮忙做些家务就好了。

Past wishes – regrets

对于过去的愿望——后悔

Sometimes, when looking back on our past problems and mistakes, we feel the urge to rewind our lives and do things differently. At these times, we will often say sentences such as the following:

有时候,当回想起过往遇到的问题和犯

下的错误时,我们会产生希望可以时光

倒转、重头来过的念头。这些时候,我

们会经常用下面这样的句子:

• “I wish we had taken the subway instead. This traffic is terrible! We’ll never make it in time.”

我真希望我们搭乘了地铁。交通状况太

糟糕了!我们肯定赶不及了。

Or 或者

• “I wish I hadn’t drunk so much last night! I feel like the walking dead today.”

我真希望我昨晚上没喝那么多!今天我

感觉自己像行尸走肉一般。

Grammar structure: I wish + had + past participle (the past participle is the third form of a verb. For example, for the verb “do”, “did” is

the simple past tense and “done” is the past participle”

语法结构:I wish + had + 过去分词

(过去分词是动词的第三种形式。例

如,对于动词“do”来说,“did”

是一般过去时而“done”则是过去分

词)

Below, we find Jane enjoying a leisurely stroll with her colleague in the park. In this conversation, there are some good examples of both present and past wishes.

下面,我们读到Jane正和同事在公园悠

闲地漫步。在这段对话中,有一些关于

现在和过去愿望的很好的例子。

Sam: It’s lovely here. I wish the weather was a bit better though.

这里很漂亮。不过天气要是能更好一些

就好了。

Jane: Yes, it’s very pretty here, especially when the Sun is out. Oh dear, I think it’s about to start raining again. I wish I had brought my umbrella.

是的,这里非常美,尤其是有太阳的时

候。噢天啊,我想这天又要开始下雨

了。我真希望我带了伞。

Sam: Don’t worry, it’ll probably just be some light drizzle. We’ll be

back at the office in a few minutes anyway.

别担心。可能就是一点毛毛雨。反正我

们很快就回公司了。

Jane: Yeah. I wish I didn’t have to work today. I’m feeling really lethargic. I didn’t sleep very well last night. I wish I had called in sick this morning and stayed at home.

好,我真希望今天可以不用上班。我感

觉昏昏欲睡。我昨晚没睡好。我今早要

是能请病假在家休息就好了。

Sam: Come on, it’s Friday. Just get through the day and then you’ve got the whole weekend ahead.

哎呀,都周五了。坚持过今天,整个周

末就都是你的了。
