Employability and Industry AccessCo-created programmes of learning with a focus on transferable skills demanded by employers and unprecedented industry access to local, national and international businesses.

We have spent a long time building relationships with employers and working with them to create the best possible opportunities for you to really explore the industry you’re interested in.

The partnerships we have created are unlike any you’ll find elsewhere and we know they will set you up, with inside knowledge and the skills you’ll need to succeed.

One example of this is our partnership with Oxford United Football Club and Oxford United Community Trust. Working together, students studying a whole host of our courses will hear from leaders in their field; sports journalists, sports event managers, grounds maintenance professionals and of course coaches, managers and referees.

We also have excellent working partnerships with organisations such as VLUK, Oxford Brookes University, Hinksey Heights and The

Jack Peers Centre enabling us to offer a diverse range of high quality real vocational courses. These partnerships mean we will give access to different industries and provide you with real role models, a support network of professionals and opportunities to gain real life work experience.

All of this will be supported by personal careers information and guidance delivered by an excellent team. We have a great partnership with Oxford Brookes University and a calendar of events and activities that will not only help you understand what you really can achieve, but will also help you understand what it really means to go to university.

And if university isn’t for you, there are a wide range of apprenticeship opportunities just waiting for you. Or of course, if you pick up any tips from our Enterprise and Entrepreneurship course, you could start your own business and we’ll help you with that too.

EnvironmentWe all know it’s not just about what you learn, it’s about how you learn and where.

With that in mind, we have created a dedicated Advance Centre which includes its own common room, refectory and study area, just for sixth formers. This gives you the space you need to do joint work, get creative or just have a break.

You will also have access to the brilliant library with its specific section for careers and higher education, as well as all the resources you’ll need for your courses.

You will be able to use all of our sports facilities, regardless of whether you’re studying a sports related course or not. These include:

• Sports Hall for futsal, basketball, netball, volleyball, trampolining… anything you want to do indoors• 3G Dome – the only covered 3G in the county• Astro pitch for hockey and football

• Multi Use Games Area so you can do a whole host of things here; tennis, netball, table tennis• Grass pitches for rugby, football, lacrosse • Physiotherapy room with physio support available by appointment from Oxford United physios just in case you need help with an injury• Dance studio• Fitness studio• Cricket nets

We also have art rooms, a food technology room, a fully functioning theatre and drama studio, recording studio and a hair and beauty salon with treatments available from students studying Beauty.

When you’re not studying there’s plenty of other activities you can be doing in state of the art facilities. Advance isn’t just about helping you pass your exams, it’s about helping you become the best person you can be and that means you’ve used the space to explore what you love.

A football training and match programme will be delivered by Oxford United. Mentoring by the OUFC coaches and players is also available as well as access to bespoke study sessions.

If it’s not sport then don’t worry, you will have time to explore your creative side in our music, dance or drama studios with links to professional theatre, music and art practitioners to support you to push your creative boundaries.

And if you’ve got a passion we can’t cater for on campus, we’ll help you find out how to take it to the next level.

There is also the option to use this time to catch up on coursework, do some extra research or work with some of our business links, increasing your insight into your chosen industry with some of the businesses we’ve linked with, increasing your insight into your chosen industry.

Football at AdvanceOur partnership with Oxford United means that Advance is now the provider of education for both male and female players between 16 and 19.

This partnership will support players to excel on the pitch, and also improve your educational outcomes.

Linking football and education like this is not new, but the way we’re doing it is, and we’re the only ones in the country doing it.

For the first time Oxford United players will be able to choose from the wide variety of courses, rather than only ever having the choice of sports courses. You can still play football and study chemistry, business or creative digital media. In fact, one of our young players who has recently signed a contract with us, has a physics degree, and another is currently doing a degree in marketing and our Manager, Michael Appleton is studying for a degree too.

These are some clear and current examples of footballers who have pursued the dream of being a professional footballer or manager while also taking their education seriously, proving it is possible to do both. Studying and playing with us will give you the best possible chance to succeed both on and off the field.

As well as all the support you will receive from Advance through your courses, Oxford United will provide:• Two hours training, four days a week, linked to a full coaching syllabus based on the Oxford United DNA• Fixtures once a week• Ongoing feedback on player development points, linked to player development plans and targets• Physiotherapy support• Nutritional and injury prevention advice• Access to Academy and First Team training sessions supported by coaching commentary to understand the playing philosophy of Michael Appleton and the football department

We offer a whole host of courses for you to pick from.*

Every student will be supported to study the equivalent of 3 A-Levels. That means you could study a variety of subjects and mix and match to your areas of interest. We’ve provided helpful hints about which courses might go nicely together, but we’ll work with you to create a selection of courses that suit you.

We also offer English and Maths GCSE resits and functional skills just in case you need them and every student, regardless of what level you’re studying will be expected to retake English and Maths if you have not yet successfully gained a Level 4 or above.

Students of the Level 2 sport course will develop their knowledge and understanding of a range of sports and the theories behind them. The course is excellent preparation for any of the Level 3 Sport Courses on offer at The Oxford Academy.

The facilities here are excellent with a wide range of sports equipment including a fitness suite, dance studio, 3G Dome and astroturf football pitches. We play a variety of different sports throughout the academy and there are many after school clubs for you to participate in.

This is a specialist qualification for students who are interested in Sports Performance and Elite Sports. This course has nine diverse mandatory units followed by a choice of one optional unit including: Sports Leadership, Practical Sports Performance, Research Methods in Sports, Instructing Gym-Based Exercise and Circuit-Based Activity, Sports Injury Management and Rules & Regulations and Officiating in Sport.

These units are designed to allow you to move straight into a career in Sports Performance. You could also move onto further study in Sports Psychology, Coaching and Sports Performance Analysis.

The Oxford Academy has excellent facilities suited to this course, with a range of clientele to give students the opportunity to gain a diverse experience. You will have the opportunity to study other subjects

such as Business, ICT or further Level 3 qualifications in Sports.

At the Oxford Academy Advance Sixth Form, you have the opportunity to work with a variety of small animals and learn about their care requirements. This will be carried out through a variety of animal care on the school grounds and at various off site locations, such as an animal rescue centre, small farms, veterinary surgeries and animal training centres.

You will study six units over this full time, one year course, which may include:

• Maintain Animal Accommodation• Undertake Practical Animal Feeding• Maintain Animal Health and Welfare• Participating in Providing Estates Management• Conservation and Improvement of British Habitats

The animals you will be handling, caring for and learning about may include small mammals, such as rabbits, hamsters and mice, farm animals, such as goats, sheep and cows or exotic pets, such as lizards, snakes or African land snails

There are opportunities for further study on Level 3 courses including the Extended Diploma in Conservation Management or Animal Management. The Level 2 and 3 courses provide a route into apprenticeships, further education or university.

The Oxford Academy has two outdoor sites away from the main campus; a woodland site and a farm based outdoor centre to deliver this interesting course. You will develop skills working outdoors in the land based industries. You will carry out the majority of the work at the Hinksey Heights Nature Trail where you will have the opportunity to work with the site warden and our Level 3 students. You will study three units over this full time, one year course.

These will lead on to the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Countryside Management course and may include the following units: • Participating in Providing Estates Management• Animal and Plant Husbandry• Animal and Plant Biology• Conservation and Improvement of British Habitats

• Work related experience in the land based industries

At Oxford United we have to maintain our first team pitch at the Kassam in pristine condition, making sure we give our players the best possible surface to play on. We also maintain a whole host of training facilities for not only our first team but also our scholars and academy players. These facilities have to be the best they can be to reduce injuries and ensure players have the best environment in which to develop.

You will have the opportunity to explore the facilities we maintain and hear from the grounds maintenance team. There will also be opportunities for work experience with our grounds team, enabling you to get hands-on experience in a professional sporting environment.

Students of Level 2 Beauty Therapy will develop a range of skills including facial skin care treatment, manicure and pedicure services, health and safety, eyebrow and eyelashes and waxing services. There are further optional units relating to the Beauty industry. There is continuous assessment throughout the course through a portfolio of evidence.

The Level 3 course is a demanding course that extends the knowledge and practical skills covered in the Level 2 course looking in further detail at both the theory and practical aspects required to practice as a beauty therapist. A wide variety of teaching methods will be used throughout the course to support your growing understanding of:• Monitoring and maintaining health and safety practice in the salon

• Providing facial skin care• Application of make-up• Providing spa treatments• Indian head massage• Hair removal using wax techniques

The Oxford Academy has its own well equipped Beauty Salon where we offer clients from the general public a range of different treatments. You will also have access to work placements within the community.

This is a one year course which includes both practical and written course work assessment. Throughout the course you will gain experience in the fundamental principles in running a business.

Some of the mandatory units studied in Level 2 Business are: Enterprise in the Business World, Finance for Business, Promoting a Brand, Principles of Customer Service, Sales and Personal Selling, Introducing Retail Business and Providing Business Support.

This course links to the Level 3 course where you will continue to develop your understanding of the world of business through the strong community links that we have developed over the history of running this fantastic course.

Football is a business which requires us to have people in the organisation who understand accounting, marketing, human resources, management, law, administration, retail and logistics in a sporting context. We’ll do this through:• Industry experts delivering guest workshops • Sourcing and pairing mentors both from within our own business but also with our partners• Providing an insight into top level meetings allowing a much more full understanding of how all the elements of business work together

Level 2 Health and Social Care First Award has been developed to provide an engaging introduction to the Health and Social Care sector. The course gives you the opportunity to gain a broad understanding and knowledge of the Health, Social Care and Early Years sectors. Along with the mandatory units the optional/specialist units are picked according to student’s preferences for future career pathways.

As part of this Health and Social Care Course, you will be supported by VLUK and the Buckinghamshire Care Team with real life work experience in a range of environments. This will be for two days per week throughout the course, and will be relevant to the studies, giving you a feel for the

industry. You will be paired with mentors in the Health, Social Care and Adult sectors to aid with your studies.

This Level 2 course provides you with the platform to continue onto the BTEC Level 3 Health and Social Care course or prepare you for a career within the sector.

Students of Applied Science will develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of a range of topics taken from AS Physics, Chemistry and Biology. You will have the opportunity to extend your understanding through practical activities across all three disciplines. You will become equipped with the analytical, independent and practical skills required for further study or a career in the field of science. The course balances practical investigation and content, with a focus on science in the workplace. As one of the smaller BTEC qualifications (equivalent to one A Level over two years), you can combine the extended certificate in Applied Science with other courses to suit your specific interests.

Art & DesignThe Extended Certificate or Diploma in Art and Design provides you with the theory, technical skills and experience in a wide range of media and processes. The course helps you to develop independence as well as criticality and creativity; skills which are beneficial to a range of endeavours.

You will focus on a number of project briefs through which you will create observational drawings, use research and experiment in the development of your ideas. At The Oxford Academy you will have access to a range of equipment and media through which you can create the final outcome for each project. Units to be studied by all students are:• Visual Recording in Art and Design• Materials, Techniques and Processes• Ideas and concepts in Art and Design• Communication through Art and Design• Contextual Influences The remaining units will be chosen

to suit the specific areas that you wish to study.

Oxford United Community Trust is always in need of new and exciting ways to market what we do to a huge variety of different people, across all of our programmes. This results in a large amount of graphic and web design working needing to be done. With this in mind, Oxford United Community Trust will act as a client to some students with an interest in going into these professions.

You will be given the opportunity to create marketing material and website pages that will be published and used, enabling you to create a portfolio of work to show future employers.

We will also link you with businesses we currently work with who can provide support and guidance with the potential to lead to apprenticeships or employment opportunities.

Students of Business will have the opportunity to develop their skills in preparation for the world of business. You will investigate the internal departments of business in addition to those external factors that can lead to business success or failure. This 2 year course is equivalent to either one or two A Levels. You will participate in team working activities, discussion, presentations and financial calculations using your developing ICT skills.

The course is mainly assessed through internally and externally assessed coursework, although 25% is assessed through a written exam. Through working with business partners in the community, you will be able to investigate business models of international companies and smaller local businesses. Currently we visit Thorpe Park, BMW plant Oxford and Cadbury’s World to help you to put Business Studies in context. These vocational visits look at the business environments of contrasting case studies to help you to gain a better understanding of the topics covered in the course, including:

At the Oxford Academy Advance 6th Form, the Countryside Management Extended Diploma offers students the opportunity to develop skills working outdoors in the land based industries. You will mainly work at the Hinksey Heights Nature Trail with the site warden. This site is situated just outside of Oxford, with access to the Oxford Academy Advance 6th form site for written assessment tasks.

This is a full time, largely practical course which is equivalent to three A Levels over two years. Students of Enterprise and Entrepreneurship will be learning through a practical ‘hands-on’ business course. You will be equipped in the skills and attributes to follow your own business dreams. You will be taught how to manage the day-to-day challenges of business start-up through running your own business.

All students enrolling on this course will be expected to participate in the Young Enterprise company programme, lasting one year. This is a nationally recognised project and will also contribute to your assessment.

You will also have a substantial work placement where you will be given a project to manage and will develop your employability skills. Through these activities you will gain experience in finding solutions for many issues involved in:

As a student on the Level 3 Uniform Public Services and Outdoor Adventure course you will gain invaluable experience and understanding of leadership, team work and the self-resilience skills needed to join Uniform Public Services. As a student of Drama and Theatre you will have the opportunity to extend and deepen your existing knowledge and understanding of different theatre styles from the origins of drama right up to the cutting edge of contemporary theatre. AS/ A Level History will enable students to develop their skills established in their GCSE History course. You will explore interpretations of History evaluating the value of the historical arguments in the context of the periods studied. You will analyse the long and short term reasons for the occurrence of historical events. The AS course focuses on the creation of nation states in the response to enlightenment, thought and philosophy. It then covers the conflicts that ensue as modernity, in some cases violently, replaces monarchy. This provides a broad foundation for understanding the past that can lead to university study.

In Year 13 students build on these initial units covering the same concepts in greater depth.

Unit 1 focuses on the High Water Mark of the British Empire, c1857-1914. This topic looks at the development of imperialism, imperial consolidation and liberal rule. Moving into A Level, the focus is on Imperial Retreat (1914-1967) and the Winds of Change (1947-1967).

IGCSE English ResitAQA English Language consists of two papers, both which assess reading and writing. Paper One requires students to read an extract from a fiction text and answer four questions. The skills required are retrieval, language analysis, structural analysis and critical evaluation. The writing question will be either narrative or descriptive. Paper Two requires students to read two extracts from non-fiction texts and answer four questions. The skills required are synthesis, summarising, language analysis and comparison. The writing question will be linked to the themes and ideas from the two non-fiction extracts and will require students to present a point of view. Spelling, punctuation and grammar are also assessed on both papers.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Money MattersGood news, there are no fees for our courses if you’re aged 16-19, even if you’re an international student.

Even better news, there is a Bursary Fund available for some of you too.

The Government has agreed that some students may be entitled to a bursary of £1,200 a year, if you are in one of the following categories:• Living in care or have recently left living in care• Receiving income support or universal credit or • Are disabled and receiving Employment Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance or Personal Independence Payments

If this applies to you the school will draw down the funding from the Government for you and you will be able to use it towards something that will help with your studies, for example travel to your work experience, a new laptop or towards other equipment you need to follow your passion.

There are other discretionary bursaries which Advance will offer to students most in need of support.
