Social Justice CORNER Gratefulness

During the Christmas Season we hear many heart-warming stories of people who are grateful for their many blessings. Here is one which will stay with you for a while.

Renee left a message with the coordinator for the Active Servicemen and Women Program in San Jose. She said that she had received her gifts from the Giving Tree and was just overwhelmed with our generosity. She went on to say that in order to pay bills and put food on the table, she had to forego buying herself a hairbrush – for seven years. The one she had now had few bristles left. But with the gift card she went out and bought herself a new one – full of bristles! This was her gift to herself.

That stopped me in my tracks. Who would have thought? How much do we take for granted? How many people are out there surviving on so very little? How many parents sacrifice their own needs for the needs of their children?

The generosity of this parish is well known. Thank you again for such a successful Giving Tree. And may you and your family have many blessings in the coming year.

January 10, 2016

Today is the first Sunday in Ordinary Time and the Gospel message reflects the start of Jesus’ public ministry with His Baptism. Until this time John the Baptist was the principle prophet of the time. Shortly after this story, however, John is imprisoned and eventually executed, but, as he himself said, he must decrease while Jesus must increase.

The first reading from Isaiah was addressed to the Jews in exile in Babylon. For the people then and in Jesus’s day, however, this reading did not pertain to Jesus. It is one of four songs called the “Suffering Songs.” They offer hope to the people of Israel who are suffering in slav-ery and beginning to wonder what is their relationship with the God of their Fathers. Their temple is gone so there is no place to worship Him and they fear their suffering means He has forsaken them. How often do we wonder where God is when we are suffering hardship?

Isaiah calls on his people not to forsake their faith merely because they are having difficulty. He promises their rescue and joyful triumph over their enemies. Though the people of his day did not know Jesus, today we do know this passage refers to Jesus as Messiah. His suffering redeemed us all.

Right after this story, Jesus goes into the desert to suffer several temptations from the Devil. That this happens almost immediately after the Father recognizes Him as the “Beloved Son” demonstrates to us the importance of suffering in our redemption. It purifies us and, if we let it, it makes us open to accepting a closer relationship with our Maker.

The second reading emphasizes this. We cannot on our own develop a closer relationship with God. Rather, it is through the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus that we are given the ability to come closer to God. Now if Jesus accepted suffering to accomplish the will of the Father to redeem us all, who are we to think that should not have to do some suffering of our own in order to come closer to the Father?

We have ample contemporary evidence of the Divine purpose for suffering today. In the nu-merous Twelve Step programs that bring healing, that healing comes only after much suffering and an acknowledgement of our powerlessness that we can only get there by turning our will and our lives over to the care of the God of our understanding. God bless you all.

Lanza del Vasto

Lanza del Vasto, was a Catholic in Italy in the early 1900s who with his wife formed a community devoted to peace. His community, Community of the Ark, was rec-ognized by Rome and continued to form small communi-ties in Italy during the last century. He was devoted to peace and a reduction in the arms race. He met with Ma-hatma Gandhi as well as Pope John XXIII and was awarded an advance copy of Pope John’s Pacem in Ter-ris. Until his death in 1981, he offered a witness to peace and the possibility of a healthy, whole and joyful life.

“The future must be a future of nonviolence, or else there will be no future.” Lanzo del Vasto

THE NEW CHURCH CALENDARS ARE NOW AVAILABLE IN THE CHURCH FOR YOU AND YOUR FAM-ILY TO PICK UP.

A Prayer for our Church

God, our Heavenly Father, we humbly ask you to make the doors of our Church wide enough to receive all who need human love and fellowship, and a Father’s care; narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride and un-charitableness. Make its threshold smooth enough to be no stumbling block to children, or to weak or straying feet; but rugged and strong enough to turn back the tempter’s power.

O, Heavenly Father, make the doors of our Church a gate-way to your Eternal Kingdom. Bless every member and worker in our Church. May all that we do be done to Your honor and for Your glory, and to the up-building of your parish, as an extension of Your kingdom.

Please send to us those whom You would have be a part of Your work here at our church, and may we all continue to be Yours, forever; daily increasing in Your Holy Spirit of love and in service to others. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord and our Savior. Amen.
