Pioneer homestead, Smoky Mountains

Roads and TurnpikesRoads and Turnpikes• Base made of crushed stone• “Corduroy Roads” made of logs• National Roads approved in 1806• Went from Baltimore, MD to Vandalia, Ill• Turnpikes were built by private companies

and travelers paid fee to travel on the road• Lancaster Turnpike built in 1790’s - was

from Philly to Lancaster, PA

SteamboatsSteamboats• Originally used in 1780’s and 1790’s in quiet

rivers• 1802 Robert Livingston hired Robert Fulton to

build a more powerful engine• 1807 – Clermont ready for trial• Went from New York to Albany in 32 hours• Noisy but smooth ride that offered comfort to

passengers• Improved transportation of goods and

passengers along inland waterways• Shipping became cheaper and faster• Also contributed to growth of cities along rivers

(Cincinnati and St. Louis)

CanalsCanals• Man-made artificial waterways• Use a “lock” system to raise and lower water

levels• Lowered the cost of shipping goods and brought

prosperity to towns along the route• Did not allow steamboats because engines could

damage earth walls• Erie Canal

– was built to connect Albany with Buffalo, New York– Finished in 1825
