NEW Introduction to Pine Needle Basket WeavingPine needle art is one of the oldest crafts known. It dates back some 9,000 years, even before pottery, which was made by lining twig baskets with clay. The indigenous people were the first to make pine needle baskets. They used a sharp piece of sea shell or bone as a needle. Some of the baskets were used for carting water, also for winnowing seeds or as feed baskets. Today, the art of pine needle basketry is still being done by a few creative people. There is no limit to what one can do with pine needles and a little imagination and skills, which will come with patience and practice. Instructor: Theresa Shortman.

The past year has provided small business owners with challenges beyond anything previously experienced or imagined.

Those challenges include mandated business closures, lack of cash flow, increased costs associated with new and changing regulations, and re-opening strategies and processes. To put it simply, it has been a difficult time to be a small business owner.

In response to this, Centralia College East has created a three-part virtual workshop - Building Small Business Resiliency - to help small businesses navigate these changing times and be better prepared for future challenges.

Virtual workshop sessions are scheduled for Jan. 12, 19 and 26, from 5:30-8 p.m. This continuing education class is being taught by Regina King, small business owner and Centralia College instructor.

The following topics will be covered:• Assessing your current situation;• Analyzing strengths & weaknesses

– identifying what is currently working for your business and areas where you need support;

• Developing a positive mindset – the power of choosing and designing your own path forward;

• Applying creative problem solving and business design thinking;

• Developing working strategies within a new business plan.

According to King, the workshop will provide the business owner information, resources, and best practices, and will also create a cohort of small businesses that will help reinforce the feeling of “I am not alone.”

The class will be taught virtually via Zoom. Online resources will be provided to registered participants. Multiple people from the same business may participate through a single registration. The fee for the three-part workshop is $145. (Scholarships – full or partial – may be available.)

For more information or to register, call Centralia College East at 360-496-5022.
