Dear friends in the community,

As we look back on our third full season at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center, we are struck by

the many ways the people of Northeast Wisconsin have embraced and incorporated the Center into

their everyday lives. As a nonprofit organization, the Center was created to serve the community

at large and provide educational experiences and lasting memories to those who would not

otherwise have the opportunity. Through the Thrivent Financial Education Series, the Center is

becoming an integral part of the lives of students who are being inspired by the hands-on, real-life

cultural exploration only the performing arts can provide.

As the following 2005/06 Report to the Community demonstrates, the Center has been successful

in its ongoing efforts to fulfill its mission and will continue to expand its ability to serve the

community thanks to the support of individuals, businesses and foundations who recognize the

valuable contribution the Center makes to the enhancement and future growth of the Fox Cities.

The Fox Cities Performing Arts Center was built by the community to

serve the community, and it is a role that is played both onstage and

off. In 2005/06, the Center advanced its efforts to fulfill its mission

through an overall increase and expansion in the way that it engaged

the community. Whether it was through a continuation of collaborative

events such as the annual Shakespeare on the Fox program, or through

the establishment of preshow and postshow discussions offered in

conjunction with performances, or through the many ways the Center

has given back to the community, the level of engagement increased

substantially during the season.

One area in which the Center has been able to contribute to the

missions and efforts of other area organizations and businesses is

through the donation of tickets to be used for fundraising and other

programs. In 2005/06, ticket donations were made to 95 groups.

In addition to donating tickets, the Center also received a grant

from the Frank C. Shattuck Fund, a donor advised fund within

the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region, to set up a

scholarship program that enabled disenfranchised, at-risk and under-

served youth to attend performances at the Center.

In 2005/06 the Center continued to fulfill its mission to serve as

a gathering place by hosting 118 community use events, ranging from

corporate meetings to fundraisers and receptions. While the Center has

already established a reputation for being the premier presenter

of performing arts attractions, the building is now being recognized

as a desired location for any gathering.

Community Support

The goal of any nonprofit

organization is to provide

services – both tangible and

educational – that will enhance

the quality of life for everyone

in the community. As with all

nonprofit organizations, funds

to support these mission-based

activities are raised annually.

The relationship between

nonprofit organizations and the

communities they serve is one

of mutual giving. An investment

in the Fox Cities Performing Arts

Center is an investment in the

community.

In 2005/06, the Center received

support from many different

areas. One of the most visible

fundraising efforts was the

Center’s first-ever raffle with a

grand prize of a 2006 Cadillac

CTS donated by Bergstrom

Corporation. The money raised

— over $50,000 — was used

to support mission-based

programs and activities. The

Center also continued collecting

funds through the Annual

Partners campaign. In 2005/06,

611 Annual Partners contributed

to the Center, raising over

$1 million to help subsidize

mission-based events. The

campaign reached 90 percent of

its annual contributions goal.

While the level of Annual

Partners support is a key

indicator of how much the

Center is becoming a valued

part of the community, the

number of grants received

in 2005/06 also shows how

much local, state and federal

institutions are recognizing

the important contribution

the Center is making to

Northeast Wisconsin. The Center

received grant monies which

supported such programs as the

Scholarship Fund, the Thrivent

Financial Education Series and

the cultural programming that

makes up the Arts Alive! series.

With continued support from

all these areas the Center will

be able to maintain, grow and

expand its cultural, educational

and community programs for

generations to come.

The Arts Alive! series was supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin.

Yamato: The Drummers of Japan was supported by the Heartland Arts Fund, a program of Arts Midwest funded by the National Endowment for the Arts with additional contributions from General Mills Foundation, Land O’Lakes Foundation, Sprint Corporation and Wisconsin Arts Board.

ARTS ALIVE! AND EDUCATION GRANTS RECEIVED IN 2005/06

Shakespeare on the Fox is a collaborative community

arts effort to bring the diverse works of the great

bard to life in ways that examine his relevance

today. The consortium was the proud recipient

of the National Endowment for the Humanities

consultation grant, which funded a session in May

2006 between representatives from the Shakespeare

on the Fox partner organizations, humanities scholars

and regional community outreach directors to

increase the size and impact of this program. The

ideas explored brought forth an effort to include

an international Shakespearean company that will

perform at unique sites and engage audiences

throughout the Fox River Valley.

Partner organizations include the American Players

Theatre, the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center, the

Oshkosh Grand Opera House and the University of

Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Community Impact

Part of the mission of the Fox Cities Performing

Arts Center is to provide educational

opportunities through the creation and

presentation of the live performing arts, which is

fulfilled through Arts Alive!, the Thrivent Financial

Education Series and M&I Bank Broadway Across

America – Fox Cities.

The Arts Alive! series is a combination of drama,

dance, music and international productions

designed to offer the community the chance to

explore their culture and the cultures of others.

Productions within the Arts Alive! series are

often part of the Thrivent Financial Education

Series as well, emphasizing the educational and

inspirational aspects of the performances. Of

the shows that made up the 2005/06 season,

Yamato: The Drummers of Japan, The Mikado

and the famed Kirov Orchestra with conductor

Valery Gergiev are just a few examples of the

quality productions being brought to Northeast

Wisconsin – many for the first time.

The Thrivent Financial Education Series continues

to serve as a valued part of elementary, middle

school, high school and college programs

throughout the Fox Cities and beyond. In

2005/06, nearly 200 school groups took part in

the education series, allowing the impact of the

mission to be felt throughout the community.

The Broadway Across America – Fox Cities series

is designed to bring the best of Broadway to

the people of Northeast Wisconsin. One key

factor in the Center’s ability to attract the hottest

Broadway touring productions is the number of

season ticket holders maintained each season.

The renewal rate for 2005/06 was 80 percent, 10

percent higher than the national average. This

combined with the Center’s growing reputation

of being a first-rate facility, makes it possible to

attract top productions. That the Center will be

presenting the Wisconsin premiere of Disney’s

The Lion King in 2006/07 is one such example.

In 2005/06, the Center

focused on enhancing the

educational experience and

engagement opportunities

in conjunction with the wide

variety of productions that

appear onstage. This consisted

of preshow and postshow

discussions, artist interactions

and community learning

programs such as the Latin

social dance that took place at

the Heart of the Valley YMCA

featuring dancers from

Ballet Hispanico.

Financials

The Fox Cities Performing Arts Center is a not-for-profit organization, meaning it exists

to provide services for the community, be it through the various forms of cultural

programming seen on these stages, educational opportunities for area students or as a

sought-after venue where groups can meet. Instead of issuing stock or paying dividends

like a for-profit company, the Center’s purpose is to realize and fulfill its mission.

Not-for-profit performing arts centers nationwide look to build four strong revenue

pillars that will support and stabilize the execution of its mission:

• Earned revenue (i.e. ticket sales, concessions), helping to bring programs and

performances to the community

• Annual contributions, maintaining the Center’s first-class facilities and subsidizing

mission-based events

• Endowment, receiving gifts to be invested on a long-term basis

• Cash reserve, providing money for short-term needs

The 2005/06 season marks the fourth year of a five-year start-up phase for the Fox Cities

Performing Arts Center. By maintaining an efficient operating budget, the Center has

been able to keep the annual contribution need to 22 percent of its overall budget

— well below the national average of 45 percent for performing arts centers. By

keeping costs down while continuing to strengthen its fundraising, the Center beat its

operational budget by eight percent for the season.
