Work Area

Keep your work area clean and well lit.Cluttered benches and dark areas inviteaccidents.

Do not operate power tools in explosiveatmospheres, such as in the presence offlammable liquids, gases, or dust. Powertools create sparks which may ignite thedust or fumes.

Keep by-standers, children, and visitorsaway while operating a power tool.Distractions can cause you to lose control.

Electrical SafetyDouble Insulated tools are equipped witha polarized plug (one blade is wider thanthe other.) This plug will fit in a polarizedoutlet only one way. If the plug does notfit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If itstill does not fit, contact a qualifiedelectrician to install a polarized outlet. Donot change the plug in any way. DoubleInsulation [] eliminates the need for thethree wire grounded power cord andgrounded power supply system. Beforeplugging in the tool, be certain the outletvoltage supplied is within the voltagemarked on the nameplate. Do not use "AConly" rated tools with a DC power supply.

Avoid body contact with groundedsurfaces such as pipes, radiators, rangesand refrigerators. There is an increasedrisk of electric shock if your body isgrounded. If operating the power tool indamp locations is unavoidable, a GroundFault Circuit Interrupter must be used tosupply the power to your tool. Electrician'srubber gloves and footwear will furtherenhance your persona] safety.

Don't expose power tools to rain or wetconditions. Water entering a power toolwill increase the risk of electric shock.

Do not abuse the cord. Never use thecord to carry the tools or pull the plugfrom an outlet. Keep cord away fromheat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts.Replace damaged cords immediately.Damaged cords increase the risk of electricshock.

When operating a power tool outside, use an outdoor extension cord marked

"W-A" or "W." These cords are rated foroutaoor use and reduce the risk of electricshock. Refer to "Recommended sizes ofExtension Cords" in the Accessory sectionof this manual.

Personal SafetyStay alert, watch what you are doing anduse common sense when operating apower tool. Do not use tool while tired orunder the influence of drugs, alcohol, ormedication. A moment of inattention whileoperating power tools may result in seriouspersonal injury.

Dress properly. Do not wear looseclothing or jewelry. Contain long hair.Keep your hair, clothing, and glovesaway from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelry, or long hair can be caught inmoving parts. Keep handles dry, clean andfree from oil and grease.

Avoid accidental starting. Be sure switchis "OFF" before plugging in. Carryingtools with your finger on the switch orplugging in tools that have the switch "ON"invites accidents.

Remove adjusting keys or wrenchesbefore turning the tool "ON". A wrench ora key that is left attached to a rotating partof the tool may result in personal injury.

Do not overreach. Keep proper footingand balance at all times. Proper footingand balance enables better control of thetool in unexpected situations.

Use safety equipment. Always wear eyeprotection. Dust mask, non-skid safetyshoes, hard hat, or hearing protection mustbe used for appropriate conditions.

Tool Use and CareUse clamps or other practical way tosecure and support the workpiece to astable platform. Holding the work by handor against your body is unstable and may1end to toss of control.

Do not force tool. Use the correct tool for

your application. The correct tool will dothe job better and safer at the rate for whichit is designed.

Do not use tool if switch does not turn it

"ON" or "OFF". Any tool that cannot be

SELECTING A CONTOUR SHAPEIndividual contour shapes are available in threebasic styles. A variety of radiuses are available ineach style:

Convex shapes: 1/8", 3/16", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2",5/8"

Concave shapes: 1/8", 3/16", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2",5/8"

Angled shapes: Flat, 30°, 60°, 45 °, g0°, -90 °

The contour shapes are available in a variety ofdifferent radiuses to match commonconfigurations. Additionally, each contour canbe modified or customized by trimming orshaping the material to the desired form.

INSTALLING AND REMOVINGDETAIL PAD & SHUTTER PAD

Your sander is equipped with a quick changeclamping mechanism that allows you to easilychange accessories without additional tools.

To attach detail pad or shutter pad to thesander:

1. Disconnect sander from power source.

2. Rotate red release lever to lower the

accessory clamp holder.

3. Apply hook and loop backed sandpaper topad.

4. Insert pad completely into the top and backof the holder until it reaches the rear "stop".

HINT: Make sure the small grip dimples havefirmly secured the rubber grip ring (Fig. 1).

5. Press holder firmly back up into place untilthe pad "snaps" into position.

To remove pad, rotate lever to release andlower the clamp holder. Remove the padfrom the holder. You are now ready to installanother pad or contour shape.

When using detail sanding pads, regularlyrotate the pad 180 degrees to maximize ai!surfaces for longer, more efficient use.

INSTALLING AND REMOVINGCONTOURSTo attach a contour shape to the sander:

4. Insert contour completely into the top andback of the holder until it reaches the rear"stop" (Fig. 2).

HINT: make sure the small grip dimples havefirmly secured the sandpatuer surface.

5. Press holder firmly back up into place untilthe contour "snaps" in place,

To remove contour, rotate lever to releaseand lower the clamp holder. You are nowready to install another contour shape ordetail pad.

When using sanding tubes, rotate them

regularly to maximize all surfaces for longermore efficient use.

HINT: When reaching into extremely tightplaces, the contour can be extended beycnthe front of the tool.

NOTE: Do not apply excessive pressure to th_tool while in use. A!low the speed of the tooland the accessory to do the work. Applyingunnecessary pressure wil! cause the accessorto wear unevenly - it will not serve to performthe work more quickly.

Contours: Use sanding tubes that are !onglasting, reusable and easy to install. Toinstall, slide tube completely over desiredcontour, and shape paper to contour.Contour abrasive tubes can also be rotatedon the contour, to maximize the use of theabrasive surface.

PSA Rolls: Rolls with pressure sensitiveadhesive can also be used with individualcontours. Unroll a strip of abrasive to fit theparticular contour, and cut to length withscissors, When using pressure sensitiveadhesive, optimal clamping can be obtainedif the entire contour surface is wrapped withpaper. Firmly press the abrasive in place onthe contour. To remove abrasive, lift acorner of the sheet with your fingernail andpeel it off. Dispose of the used abrasives, they are not reusable.

HINT: When using 1/8" and 3/16" concavecontours with sanding tubes, it will be easier toconform the abrasive to the workpiece if a finergrit paper is used.

NOTE: The contour shapes have beenextruded to the dimension indicated on theshape. When doing exacting work, it will benecessary' to provide an allowance for thesandpaper being used. Heavier/coarser gritpapers require a greater allowance.

PSA Adhesives work best at temperaturesabove 25 degrees F. If PS& abrasives andpads are stored at lower temperatures, it maybe necessary to allow them to come to roomtemperature before use.

PSA Rolls must be stored in a dust-freeenvwonment to prevent contamination ofadhesive.

After considerable use. the detail pad backingsudace may become worn. The backing padmust be replaced when it no longer offers afirm grip. If you are experiencing prematurewearout of the backing pad facing, decreasethe amount of pressure you are applyingduring operation of the tool.

This machine is particularly suitable for accessto corners and edges that are otherwisedifficult to reach cr require hand sanding.Profiles and grooves may be finished using thetip or edge of the selected accessory, whichshould occasionally be rotated during use todistribute the wear on the accessory orbacking pad surface.

Always be ceRain that smaller workpieces aresecurely fastened to a bench or other suppcr:Larger panels may be held in place by hand oa bench or sawhorse.

SANDING: Open-coat aluminum oxide sandirsheets are recommended for mos: wood cr

metal sanding applications, as this synthetlcmateria! cuts quic'.d'! and _vears well.

SELECTINGABRASIVESThefollowingsuggestionsmaybeusedasageneralguideforabrasiveselection,butthebestresultswillbeobtainedbysandingatestsampleoftheworkpiecefirst.

Gdtt A__licationCoarse

80 gritFor rough wood, metal sanding, rust, paint, or old material removal.

Medium For general wood or metal sanding,120 grit

Extra fine For final sanding of bare wood,220 grit smoothing old paint, or preparing a

finished surface for recoating.

With the workpiece firmly secured, turn tool"ON." Contact the work with the tool after thesander has reached the selected speed, andremove it from the work before switching thetoo! "OFF." Operating your sander in thismanner will prolong switch and motor life, andgreatly increase the quality of your work.

Your contour sander uses an in-line sandingmotion. The best surface finish will be

achieved while operating the sander in-linewith the wood grain. Faster stock removal canbe achieved by operating the sander acrossthe grain when working out rough areas, thenfinishing by sanding with the grain.

Do not apply excessive pressure -- let the tooldo the work. Excessive pressure will result inpoor handling, vibration, and unwantedsanding marks.

If the surface is rough, begin with coarser gritsand then complete the surfacing with mediumand fine abrasives. To avoid uneven results, donot skip more than one grit size when goingfrom coarser to finer, and do not sand in onearea for too long. When the job is completed, gently !ift the tool from the work surface andslide switch to the "OFF" position.

To ensure longer life and even wear, lightlybrush any residue or clogged materials fromsandpaper surface prior to each use.

Do not wet sand with thissander.

ServicePreventive maintenance per-formed by unauthorized per-

sonnel may result in misplacing of internalwires and components which could causeserious hazard. We recommend that all toolservice be performed by a Sears ServiceFacility.

CARBON BRUSHESThe brushes and commutator in your tool havebeen engineered for many hours ofdependable service. To maintain peakefficiency of the motor, we recommend everytwo to six months the brushes be examined.

Only genuine Sears replacement brushesspecially designed for your tool should beused.

MAINTENANCE OFREPLACEABLE BRUSHES#9-53140

The brushes should be inspected frequentlywhen tools are used continuously, if your toolruns sporadically, loses power, makesunusual noises or runs at a reduced speed, check the brushes. To continue using the too!

in this condition wil! permanently damageyour toot.

With the cord unplugged, remove the brushcaps one at a time with a small screwdriverby rotating cap counter-clockwise and checkeach brush.

If the brush is less than 1/8" long and the endsurface of the brush that contacts thecommutator is rough and/or pitted, theyshould be replaced. Check both brushes.Usually the brushes will not wear out simul-taneously. If one brush is worn out, replaceboth brushes. Make sure the brushes areinstalled as illustrated. The curved surface ofthe brush must match the curvature of thecommutator.

After replacing brushes the tool should be runat no-load; place on a clean surface and runfreely for 5 minutes before loading (or using)the tool. This will allow the brushes to "seat"properly and will give you more hours of lifefrom each set of brushes. This will alsoextend the total life of your tool since thecommutator surface wiil "wear" longer.

BEARINGS

Model 572.11629 has ball bearingconstruction, Under normal use no additionallubrication is required.

CleaningTo avoid accidents alwaysdisconnect the tool from the

power supply before cleaning or performingany maintenance. The tool may be cleanedmost effectively with compressed dry air.Always wear safety goggles when cleaningtools with compressed air.

Ventilation openings and switch levers mustbe kept clean and free of foreign matter. Donot attempt to clean by inserting pointedobjects through openings.

Certain cleaning agents andsolvents damage plastic

parts. Some of these are: gasoline, carbontetrachloride, chlorinated cleaning solvents, ammonia and household detergents thatcontain ammonia.

DUST COLLECTION WANDYour Contour Sander can be equipped withan optional Dust Collection Wand forcollecting dust from the sanding pad. Ashop vacuum hose of ID 1-1/2" or OD 1-3/8"will fit directly onto the wand, or use anadapter to make it fit. (See diagram inset onpage 11). For proper wand functioning, besure to align the sanding sheet holes withthe holes in the sanding pad.

The detail pad and shutter pad can be usedwith hooWIoop sandpaper with or withoutholes for dust collection. If you've purchasedsandpaper without holes, holes can bepunched manually for use with the dustwand,

Using sandpaper with holes - while not usingthe dust wand - will not harm or damageyour work. This sander will operateeffectively with or without the dust collectionsystem.

If an extension cord is necessary, a cord with adequate size conductorsthat is capable of carrying the current necessary for your tool must be

used. This will prevent excessive voltage drop, loss of power or overheating. Groundedtools must use 3-wire extension cords that have 3-prong plugs and receptacles.
