4.1 Color Choice for all Skin Tones

Just like it was important to understand and identify undertones in our natural skin when choosing

foundation (see Module 1), we have to consider undertones when selecting highlighter colors. The exact

same principles apply, only now the goal isn’t to match our skin tone, it’s to find lighter shades to

complement the foundation you’ve chosen. For the most natural look, contour colors should be 1-2

shades darker than foundation, and highlight color should be 1-2 shades lighter than foundation. For

highlighters, you have to be careful about getting an ashy effect - this basically means the color is too dull

and grey for the skin tone. Highlighter should be bright, but not stark white - it should look like a natural light

bouncing off skin, not like the skin itself is emitting a white light. A general tip that works for most skin types,

is to mix a bright yellow cream highlighter with the concealer you've chosen - in most cases you'll get the

perfect highlighter shade that will play off your base makeup for a flawless natural look.

4.2 Applying Cream Highlighter

Start with the under-eye area, as the eyes are an ideal focal point for just about any face. Using a contour

brush, pack your highlighter in along the lashline and in a triangle shape under the eyes. Other placement

will be determined by your face shape, features and zone map, but be careful about applying too much

highlighter. It's very easy to veer into "disco ball" territory, and that's not the look we want! the key is in

blending your product and staying within your "highlighting zone". If you have already applied contour

makeup, you don't want to mix the two, as the colors will get muddy, and you'll lose your definition. Always

press creams into the skin, so they "melt" into the skin and won't feel heavy or thick.

4.2.1 Applying Cream Highlighter – Where and How

Begin by highlighting the under eye area in an upside-down triangle shape, and along the lashline. Applying

cream under the eyes first will allow the product to absorb and set into the skin and prevent creasing.

Highlight a thin line down the nose and into the center of the forehead. If your face shape requires, you can

apply highlighter on the chin and top of the lip. If you want to give added the face a more radiant look, you

can use a shimmering cream highlighter, but this should only be applied to the top of the cheekbones.

If you’re not sure how much product to use, start with small dabs and then build coverage if you feel you’re

not achieving the right look. Remember – you can always add more, but taking away too much product can

result in starting over. Also, keep in mind that the contrast of dark shadow will make the highlights appear

even brighter, so resist the urge to apply more product or lighter shades until you see how the face looks

with the addition of contouring.

4.2.2 Creating a Dewy Look

First, a fresh “dewy” look requires clean skin. Make sure to exfoliate to remove any dull skin, and then

continue with your skin care routine. Applying a hydrating serum and cream will make a world of difference!

Once your skin is healthy and glowing, you can lock it in with these 5 simple makeup steps:

Prime the face with an illuminating primer

Apply concealer and a water based foundation with a damp sponge

Choose your cream or liquid highlighter

Apply the highlighter to the tops of the cheekbones with your fingers or a damp sponge

Set the face with a dewy makeup setting spray

Spray the setting spray directly on the brush, and then dip it into your powder highlight for a lighter finish

with a dewy, reflective finish!
