THE ASPHALT PLANT AND THE COMMUNITY:
FOSTERING CONNECTIONSBRUCE BARKEVICH, VICE PRESIDENT
NEW YORK CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS ASSOCIATION
• An asphalt mixture is a combination of approximately 95% stone, sand, or gravel bound together by approximately 5% asphalt binder, a product of crude oil.
• Aggregate is heated and mixed with liquid asphalt at an asphalt facility.
• The resulting asphalt mix is loaded into trucks for transport to the paving site. The asphalt is placed, and then compacted using rollers, which are driven over the asphalt. Traffic can be permitted on the pavement as soon as the pavement has cooled.
• 1820: John Loudon McAdam used broken stone to build roads in Scotland. Hot tar was used to reduce dust and to bond the broken stones together, producing “tarmacadam” pavements.
• Late 1860’s: The first asphalt mixtures produced in the United States were used for sidewalks, crosswalks, and even roads starting in the late 1860s.
• 1870: The first true asphalt pavement was paved in the US in front of the City Hall in Newark, New Jersey.
• 1876: Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC was paved with an asphalt mixture using Trinidad Lake Asphalt.
• 1900: Frederick J. Warren filed a patent for “Bitulithic” pavement, a mixture of bitumen and aggregate.

• 1901: The first asphalt facility to contain virtually all the basic components of those used today was built by Warren Brothers in East Cambridge, Massachusetts.
• 1907: Production of asphalt from refined crude oil replaced the use of natural asphalt.
• 1931: Sheldon G. Hayes was the first to use a Barber-Greene finisher, which consisted of a tractor unit and a screed unit with a vertical tamping bar.
• 1940’s: Marshall Mix design method developed.
• 1990’s: Superpave mix design system developed.

1. Batch plants
• Make asphalt mixture in batches of 2 to 8 tons which are typically loaded directly into a delivery truck.
• Ability to make multiple mix types in individual batches.
2. Drum plants
• Make asphalt mixture continuously and store
the asphalt for several days in heated storage
silos if needed.
• Designed for long production runs of the
same mix type to be an efficient high capacity
plant.
▪ Cold feed bins — Accurately meter the different aggregates used in the mix to the drying drum. Aggregates are usually stored in stockpiles or they may be stored in large silos or bunkers.
▪ Asphalt cement storage — Asphalt cement is stored in tanks that meet stringent regulatory guidelines for spill prevention.
▪ Dryer drum — Dries and heats aggregates by tumbling them through hot air. In a parallel-flow drum, aggregates move in the same direction as the hot air. In a counter-flow drum, aggregates move in the
opposite direction.
▪ Emission control system — System includes a cyclone or knockout box and a baghouse, this system traps and removes fine sand and dust particles and returns them to the mix.
▪ Storage silos — Drum mix plants must have silos since they produce asphalt continuously. Batch plants do not require a silo, but often have them to increase plant production. Storage silos are insulated and may be heated to prevent heat loss. A mix may be stored in a silo for days.

Americas Materials - Performance
• The Diamond Achievement process emphasizes continuous improvement. The process begins with a self-assessment of six aspects of plant/site operations: appearance, operations, environmental practices, safety, permitting and regulatory compliance, and community relations.
• The Diamond Achievement Sustainable is an optional level to the Diamond Achievement and is an expanded level that assesses the social, economic, and environmental efforts of an asphalt production facility to gauge how well it puts the principles of sustainability and community into action.
• The Diamond Quality Commendation focuses on plant practices resulting in excellent product quality. The areas evaluated include quality management, rap and aggregate handling, asphalt storage, drying and mixing, air quality, truck scales, silos, and control rooms.
Americas Materials - Performance
• The Diamond Paving Commendation recognizes, through self-assessment, a company whose paving crews demonstrate best practices that result in excellent product quality and ensure safety. Areas evaluated include training of supervisors and crew members, use of best practices in paving, and compliance.
• The Diamond Terminal Commendation recognizes asphalt terminals that demonstrate their commitment to best practices for operations; proactive environmental, health and safety compliance; and community relations.

1. Identify a newsworthy story (impact, timeliness, human interest)
2. Compile a list of relevant media personnel (paper, TV, social, etc.)
3. Create the pitch — Write a concise pitch in three to five paragraphs, offering an expert spokesperson to speak on behalf of your story/initiative.
4. Email the pitch — Send out your pitch during the first half of the week, personalizing each email to the
respective reporter / writer.
5. Email follow-up — If your pitch does not generate a response, follow-up on your initial email two to three days later.
6. Phone follow-up — If your first follow-up is unsuccessful, call the reporter directly one week after the initial
pitch, remind them of your original email and offer your spokesperson for an interview.
1. Expert on subject
2. Well spoken and experienced in answering questions
3. Be prepared
4. Expect to be interrupted
5. Remain calm
6. Be truthful always!
7. Stay focused on topic, not tangents.
