Contrast Provides Focal Point

-Where does your eye go first?

-Why is the leaf texture in focus, while the background is smooth and out of focus?

Page 4: Contrast & focal point exercise

Why is a focal point important?

- Your eye will generally need a ‘resting place’ or something of interest to really hold it.

- Where does your eye rest in this photo?

Page 5: Contrast & focal point exercise

Setting your point of interest apart from it’s surroundingsWhich advertisement holds your attention longer? A or B?

Photo A Photo B

- Photo A has smaller depth of field which allows the eye a resting point. There is also a strong contrast of colors that emphasizes the shape of the flower.

- Photo B has strong color contrast, but there’s too much repetition of shape to focus our attention. There is not one resting point for your eye.
