Join a technicalcommittee; keep upto date Joining an ISA committee is a great wayof keeping yourself up-to-date with the latestISA standards changes. Choose from a list ofcommittees relating to your industries. There are two types of membership statusfor each ISA committee: voting members andinformation members. Voting members areresponsible for attending meetings, communicating with the chairpersons, andcommenting on draft standards. Informationmembers receive committee mailings andmay submit draft comments, but they do notvote. To join and to see a list of availablecommittees, visit https://www.isa.org/forms/join-a-standards-committee. For example, I’m currently enrolled asan Information Member on Control ValvesTesting, Valve actuators, and Valve sizing. Asa result, I receive updates on potentialchanges and on new standards relating to thisindustry prior to the official release. Just last month, I learned of at least threedrafts standards in development in the valveindustries including ISA-96.02.01, Guidelinesfor the Specification of Electric ValveActuators, ISA-75.08.05, and ISA-75.08.08,both relating to face to face dimensions ofvalves. As a reminder, current members can viewmost ISA standards, Recommended Practice, and Technical Reports free at https://www.isa.org/standards-and-publications/isa-standards/member-access-to-standards/ afteryou login. Greetings ISA District-11 Members,
I want to wish everyone a Prosperous New Year.
Wow, 2016 has arrived. It was 40 years ago (circa 1976) that Igraduated Dayton High School, started Lee College, Baytown, TXand became a student member of ISA and attended my very first ISAshow in Houston Texas. I have been a regular member for over 25years now, how time flies.
I have been fortunate to be able to work in an industry where Iwitnessed the first computer controlled system put in action on theHouston Ship channel and where an A/D converter was the size of ashoe box which was calibrated using a DVM and a signal generator. Ihave also seen the decline of complete pneumatic control systemsand the advent of the DCS using intrinsic safety barriers in the petro-chemical industries. I have seen the PLC go from a discrete batch
process system to the manufacturing sector using robotics, high speed image processing controls, and the continuous process automation control (PAC) system integrated into service today.Control Panels and Graphics went from MIMIC Boards to high speed monitors and HMIdisplays. Having worked in the chemical, refining, power and water industries and I haveexperienced the control systems migration from analog signals to digital with the numerouscommunications protocols designed to reduce the volume of wires and cables in a controlsystems. That was a very good thing, until the cyber hackers became a challenge, but ISAresponded with a standard for that.
I have volunteered to support ISA at the Section level for the last 15 years and will continueto do so. A couple of years ago I was approached by the D-11 nominator to become the DVP-11Elect and accepted, which means as of January 1, 2016, I have the honor and a distinct pleasureto be your ISA Disctict-11 Vice President from 2016 1nd 2017. Please join me to give a big thankyou to Rafael Agrazsanchez for his service while leading us through the first two years as part ofthe new Geographical Assembly.
I announced at last year’s DLC that the next District-11 Leaders Conference will be in Vegasin 2016, but since then, an opportunity to have our DLC 2016 in Newport Beach, CA onSeptember 23, 2016 has presented itself and it makes economic and logistical sense to takeadvantage of the ISA FLM venue for our DLC. The District and Section Leaders are encouragedto join the Fall Leaders Meeting on 24 – 27 September, 2016 at the Newport Beach MarriottHotel & Spa, in Newport Beach, CA . “The Fall Leaders Meeting begins with a Kick-off Sessionwhere information about Society initiatives is shared and ends with a Wrap-up Session where keydecisions are announced. All attendees should participate in the Kick Off and Wrap Up sessions.Leadership training is integrated throughout the schedule. The meeting flow minimizes conflicts, enables cross-pollination, and provides time for discussion and networking during breaks, lunches, and receptions to strengthen relationships. It is anticipated that many incoming leaders(first timers) will attend this meeting so Districts are encouraged to schedule their DistrictLeadership Conferences in conjunction with the FLM. “ Please make plans to attend.
On a personal note about District-11, we have lost some very dear friends during the pastyear, but we have also seen some new faces join the leadership, so as the year starts anew, I amlooking forward serving all of our District-11 Sections. I will make myself available to you viaemail ([email protected]) or Cell Phone (702) 249-1156 if you need get in touch with me.
Thank you for allowing me the honor to serve.
