IndustrialIT for your applications
More productivity for less cost
This requirement is ubiquitous within the indus-try. Especially over the past few years, the in-dustry has been aiming to reduce generaloperating costs in order to increase efficiencyand remain competitive.A task of this kind needs intelligent solutionsand flexible use components and systems. Theway towards further reducing engineering costsis being paved for example by componentswhich are finely tuned to one another or havealready been integrated.
It is not only the general efficiency of the sys-tem components used, in relation to handling, reliability and ease of service, but also long-term availability as well as the secured futureand safe investment of the chosen system thatplay a decisive role. ABB keeps in permanentdialogue with its customers and end custo-mers in order to satisfy these stringent require-ments.The result of this dialogue is an extensive rangeof devices which is being continuously extendedand optimized. Customer requirements are in-corporated in this and then converted into in-novative products and systems.

Control level with AC31 devices
Everything for switching and controlling
ABB provides the whole range of low-voltagedevices, from programmable controllers todevices for switching and relaying e. g. softstarters, relays, circuit breakers to the stan-dard sensors – and all from one source.
Bus connections
In an ideal situation, the programmable con-troller and field level are linked by standard fieldbuses. However in addition to this, the newABB product family of FieldBusPlugs offers anew alternative form of installation in the fieldsector. This intelligent plug is the link to a communica-tive range of switching and automation com-ponents which can be very easily combinedwith standard fieldbus systems. The interestingfeature here is that each of the modules ordevices belonging to the product family has afieldbus-neutral interface. A specially assembledconnection cable with a bus-specific pluginterface forms the communicative connection.
The FieldBusPlug connects:

Wireless proximity switch
Furthermore, through its innovative wirelessproximity switches, ABB is the first manufac-turer anywhere in the world to provide this newdevice system. In this solution, the sensors, which are energizedwith the help of an induced magnetic field, transfer their signals in a wireless manner. Theinput module belonging to the system, whichcommunicates by means of the wireless prox-imity switch fitted in a production cell, is linkedto the central AC31 units via the FieldBusPlugand a standard fieldbus. When combined, thesetherefore provide highly flexible productionsolutions.
Many ABB components are already integratedin this new kind of system concept.Examples of this include the Universal MotorController UMC22-FBP for effective motorprotection and the especially convenient motorcontrol unit, the dialogue-compatible circuitbreaker Tmax T4, T5 and the soft starter PSS.
Other devices with specially co-ordinatedfunctions and fields of application are alreadybeing developed or adapted.

Communication via fieldbus
The ideal automation solution has three com-ponents: capable and compact automationdevices, user-friendly programming softwareand appropriate operator devices. The CS31 fieldbus forms the basis of communi-cation between the AC31 components. Up to31 bus devices can be integrated in the systemvia this especially fast RS-485 two-wire buswith interference immunity.
But also other means of communication suchas: ARCNET CANopen DeviceNet Ethernet MODBUS PROFIBUS DP and RCOM data communicationcan be used with AC31 components forcommunication depending on the systemenvironment and prevailing preconditions.

Integrated information management
Automatic added value results from usingIndustrial IT-certified AC31 components:a wealth of data (aspects) which can be easilyintegrated in an electronic manner and informa-tion relating to the product and security whichcan be easily integrated in an Industrial ITsystem. This means that machine and systeminformation is made available in an especiallysimple and user-friendly manner, e.g. for diag-nosis and maintenance.
Aspects are conveniently consolidated in avirtual object (commonly referred to as theAspect Object). With the help of the
Integration in an information management system
The Aspect Object Viewer
Aspect Integrator Platform from ABB, theseaspects only need to be integrated once andthen they can be efficiently used in the entiresystem under a whole range of different systemstructures. This considerably reduces thecomplexity of a system.
But even if a certified device is not initiallyintegrated in the Aspect Integrator Platform, users can use the free-of-charge Aspect ObjectViewer from ABB to simply display all the as-sociated device information and data on theirPCs at the click of a mouse button – a simpleand time-saving way of preparing and updatinginformation.

Advant Controller 31 – the hardware
Economic and efficient
AC31 provides an extensive selection of effi-cient hardware for both machine and systemconstruction in the form of central units as wellas digital and analogue I/O modules. AC31provides these industries with appropriatesolutions in power-related grades which areadapted to different focal points of the applica-tion and therefore allow for cost-effective use inall cases.
An AC31 central unit can e. g. be operated as astandalone device as well as a master or slave. And regardless of whether an automation solu-tion covers just a few I/O signals or requires asignal scope of several 100 or 1000 inputs/outputs, the AC31 is always the right choice. Some of the AC31 central units also provide theopportunity of saving user programs or data ona plug-type Smart Media card and loading thisin the automation device.

Flexible and extendible
No matter whether tightly squeezed together orgradually extendible, I/O bus modules corres-pond to the requirement profile – AdvantController 31 provides both technologies. Theconfigurable digital and analogue input / outputdevices offer particularly high levels of flexibilityfor this. System modifications and extensionscan be undertaken very easily. Since busmodules can be replaced or added without thesupply voltage even having to be disconnectedor bus operations having to be interrupted. These are automatically detected by the systemwhereby actual component identification andaddressing takes place on the system bus viathe module address.
Depending on the module type used, the settingis undertaken either via an address switch onthe I/O devices or via system constants on auto-mation devices. The I/O devices can thereforebe addressed directly from the user program. There is no additional outlay for a bus configura-tion.
Functional and well thought-out
The system technology of Advant Controller 31provides automatic diagnosis of the CPU, thesystem bus and the connected I/O devices.Diagnosis functions, such as discontinuity, shortcircuit and overload, can be interrogated if neces-sary.All modules of the AC31 system are character-ized by excellent ease of assembly. In additionto the Slot programmable controller which issimply inserted in a free PCI slot on a PC, allother devices can be easily clipped on a 35 mmtop hat rail or secured on to an assembly platewith screws.
12
Advant Controller 31 – the control panels
Transparent man-machinecommunication
Advant Controller 31 also provides a wide rangeof products for communication between manand machine. Operators can select from anumber of displays which can be used depen-ding on the level of intervention required andthe density of information involved in the appli-cation. Regardless of whether operators opt fora simple device for displaying text, a graphics-compatible device or a touch panel with a colourdisplay from the range of control panels avail-able, all satisfy the requirements for maximumpossible clarity and/or efficiency for automation.
13
Simple handling
The user can use the AC31 central units tocommunicate via various control panels as wellas to access the device data (both reading andwriting).Configuration is undertaken simply and quicklyusing the same software for all devices. Com-mands and programming languages are iden-tical for all devices. As a result of the rough environment they arefrequently faced with at the site of usage, thefront ends of all operating panels satisfy type ofprotection IP65.The operating and automation devices areeither connected simply via serial interfaces orin complex applications via Ethernet, MODBUSor PROFIBUS DP.
Requirement-related functions
Depending on the device type, the controlpanels may offer the following functions: real-time clock alarm administration in several groups trend curves recipe handling formula print-outs password protection memory of up to 1600 kB Flash

Quality and the environment
Quality is the true strength of the AdvantController 31. A quality management systemcertified in accordance with DIN ISO 9001establishes an important basis for this:”Our thinking and actions are oriented towardssatisfying the needs and demands of our cus-tomers. Our customers decide the quality ofour products and services. It is they whoevaluate our quality levels.”(Extract from: ABB quality manual)
The environmental impact of a product is pre-dominantly determined by design specifications.Right from the stage of drawing up a product’stechnical specification, particular attention istherefore paid to conserving resources, avoidingproblem materials, designing a product whichcan be recycled and ensuring that the producthas a long life-cycle.
