Anthracnose, Dollar Spot & Fusarium Patch

“Mike Reece, Course Manager

I find fungicide packages give a far better disease control than using fungicides on their own especially when used as a preventative measure. “Fusarium Packages 7&9

Introduction The purpose of this booklet is to provide information and guidance on how to control the key turf diseases Fusarium Patch, Dollar Spot and Anthracnose.

This guide contains information about each disease including cultural control methods, an explanation behind the concept of tank-mixing, our trials work and our fungicide packages.

The illustration below shows the correct time to apply preventative, curative and eradicant fungicides. For information relating to these timings please refer to the fungicide package and product sections.

Always read the label and product information before use. Astute is a trademark of Pan, Chipco Green and Scorpio are trademarks of Bayer, GoGreen is a trademark of Amega Sciences, Vision Pro is a trademark of Becker Underwood, Headway, Medallion TL and Heritage are trademarks of Syngenta, K-Max is a trademark of Omex.

Mixing two or more products in the spray tank can be carried out to reduce the potential for disease resistance development. Certain tank-mixes can also improve the quality of the turf and reduce the time taken for the turf to recover from disease attack.

Fungicides are selected with different modes of action so that the resulting mixture will attack the target disease on two or more fronts. This makes it more difficult for the pathogen to develop resistance to the treatment. Tank-mixing when referring to a distributor or contractor backed tank-mix recommendation is perfectly legal provided all the label requirements are followed for the tank mix constituents and partner products.

If a manufacturer or approval holder wishes to claim enhanced activity or biological compatibility from a specific tank mix, this must be demonstrated to PSD to be allowed to be part of the label claims. This is not required when referring to a distributor or contractor backed tank-mix that does not feature on the product label.

The Fungicide Resistance Action Group (FRAG)aims to gather and interpret information on fungicide resistance and its management. Their objective is to promote practical guidance on the status and management of fungicide resistance in the UK.

Taken from the FRAG guidelines section 6:

Alternate applications of fungicides from different groups, or use recommended formulated mixtures or tank-mixes designed to help combat resistance. Use at effective doses. Lists of popular fungicides approved for use on different crops ordered by fungicide group are available online at: http://frag.csl.gov.uk.

There are two different types of ‘tank-mix’:

i) Convenience tank-mixes - The combination by the user of two or more pesticides in the same spray tank to reduce the number of spray operations. A convenience tank-mix can also occur when a product label recommends, in a ‘Compatibility’ section, that the product can be mixed with another product. Such tank-mixes must be shown to be physically and biologically compatible. The compatibility section of the label may also advise on tank-mixes which are known to be incompatible or on specific mixing instructions to be used with compatible mixes.

ii) Positive tank-mixes - The combination by the user of two or more pesticides in the same spray tank to obtain better pest control than if the products were applied alone.

A positive tank-mix occurs when a product label recommends a mixture to give an enhanced effect when the tank-mix is used (eg. to control additional pests; to reduce the application rate of one or more of the products).

We are dealing with Convenience tank mixes. There is no need to prove efficacy and in-fact there is no need to prove the tank mix will work, just ‘shown to be physically and biologically compatible’. There is nothing illegal about reducing rates but it is illegal to go over the maximum label dose rate.

Sherriff Amenity, backed by our parent company Agrovista UK, are at the forefront of practical solutions for turf management. Our trials and research programmes at the STRI along with other independent research organisations are at the vanguard of technical turf care and specialise in the development of innovative technology to solve everyday problems in a practical way.

To maximise the control and longevity of a product, it must be used in a sustainable and controlled manner, protecting the environment and also the product. No other amenity distribution company has committed more resources into researching technical programmes and product efficacy ensuring high-quality, clean and safe turf surfaces can be produced and maintained.

STRI Trials An introduction

Fusarium PatchMicrodochium nivale

Fusarium Patch (Microdochium nivale) is the most common and widespread disease in managed amenity turf in the UK, it can be exceptionally damaging to most grass species, causing unsightly scarring of the sward and reducing the aesthetic appearance and trueness of the playing surface.

Fusarium Patch affects over 98% of golf courses and bowling greens. When the disease is very active or when grass growth is slow or at a standstill, it is essential that immediate steps are taken to control the outbreak by careful use of an appropriate fungicide.

Symptoms

Orange-brown patches 2.5-5 cm across, increase in size as the disease progresses. Active patches on turf have a distinctive ginger appearance and, when viewed early in the morning, creamy white mycelium resembling cotton wool can be seen in the centre and towards the outer edge of the patch. Grass in active patches is often slimy.

Once the disease has been effectively controlled the scars will remain until there is sufficient grass growth to fill in. The scars have a pale straw coloured appearance and are drier to the touch with no evidence of mycelium.

The disease can often become very active under a covering of snow. As the snow melts the large disease patches (sometimes 25-50 cm across) have a bright ginger ring surrounding a pale pink/straw coloured centre. This form of the disease is known as Pink Snow Mould.

Occurrence

Fusarium can occur at any time when conditions are suitable, but especially in the spring and autumn.

3

J F M A M J J A S O N D

High Risk Period

Grass species involved

Annual Meadow-grass (Poa annua) is the main species attacked but the disease will also attack Bent Grass (Agrostis spp.) especially where ‘Penncross’ creeping Bent Grass is used as a monoculture. The preference for a specific grass is diminished when the disease attacks under snow cover.

Influencing factors

Shade Humidity Alkaline surface Drainage (inefficient) Excess Nitrogen

Fusarium PatchMicrodochium nivale

“Gareth Williams, Head Greenkeeper

Hornsea Golf Club

We had two greens affected by disease post first application, but this occurred after a very damp, mild and misty week with limited sunlight. The two greens in question were indicator greens with high poa content. All the other greens were free of disease, looking healthy and putting well with good feedback from members.

I do like the options that the packages allow, backed up by the knowledge and experience of my Sherriff Amenity representative. “

Control measures

• Identify the influencing factors from list opposite and apply remedial measures

• Improve the health of the root system by treatment with seaweed products such as SeaVolution, growth stimulants and microbial feeds

• Apply a suitable fungicide. Use a contact fungicide when grass growth is reduced in late autumn, winter and early spring. The new generation of leaf uptake systemic fungicides (systemic or trans-laminar) can be used under fairly low temperatures since they require less energy for uptake into the plant than the older type of root uptake fungicides

• Where Fusarium is a regular problem in the autumn, consider applying a preventative spray before the onset of disease

• In regions that experience regular winter snow cover, any autumn outbreaks of fusarium should be re-treated with a preventative contact fungicide (eg. Chipco Green or Medallion TL) when snow is expected, to protect the turf against the devastating effects of Pink Snow Mould

We applied fungicide Package 1 in the worst disease pressure time of year for us, which is autumn. We have poa/bent greens and they are always susceptible in September and October to Fusarium Patch particularly following our renovation week. We kept clean surfaces from disease during this period so would not hesitate to use this package again. “Fusarium Package 1

Anthracnose

Symptoms

Recent research has identified two significant stages of this disease; a foliar blight that can spread rapidly during the summer months causing considerable discolouration of affected plants. Leaves of individual grass plants turn yellow, with the youngest leaves on each plant appearing red or orange.

Under conditions of high moisture during the autumn and spring, the second stage of the disease can occur when the plant rots at the base and is easy to pull from the turf. Examination of the rotting base of the plant shows extensive dark staining and sometimes black reproductive structures can just be seen with the naked eye. (Known as acervuli, these spore bearing structures are little more than the size of a pin head).

Occurrence

Can be fairly common on turf with low levels of nutrient in late summer and autumn.

Grass species involved

Annual Meadow-grass is the main species affected in the UK but Perennial Ryegrass, Smooth-stalked Meadow-grass and Fescues have also been attacked.

Other influencing factors

Poor growing conditions, especially compacted soils where air supply to the roots is restricted.Poor fertility in the early autumn is also likely to encourage this disease.

Control measures

• Aeration designed to relieve compaction eg. hollow / solid tining, turf conditioning (pan breaking)

• Application of an appropriate fertiliser to sustain the turf into the autumn - this some times calls for reducing the application rate of the fertiliser or using liquid feeds to ‘spoon feed’ the turf

• Apply a suitable fungicide. Chemical treatments are best applied as a preventative spray or at the earliest visible sign of disease infection or if the disease appears to have become an annual problem

Anthracnose Package 3

Sclerotinia homoeocarpa J F M A M J J A S O N D

High Risk PeriodDollar Spot

Dollar Spot is caused by the fungus Sclerotinia homoeocarpa, which is becoming an increasing problem in intensively managed sports turf surfaces. Fescues are particularly susceptible, although it may also be seen in swards dominated by Annual Meadow-grass.

Cultural methods such as dew control, shade reduction, improvement to air movement and the selection of resistant grass cultivars can play an important role in managing this disease. However it is clear that inadequate nitrogen input is a major trigger for the outbreak of Dollar Spot. Turf which is low in nitrogen is not only more susceptible to infection but also takes much longer to recover from Dollar Spot injury.

Symptoms

Small ‘straw’ coloured, bleached spots typically 10 - 20 mm in diameter; rarely much larger than this. The patches are distinct and circular but can sometimes join together forming larger spots. The diseased grass is usually dry. Close examination of individual grasses near the outer edges of the patch often reveals a dark margin separating the dead straw coloured tissue from the green bits.

Occurrence

The disease occurs in summer and autumn. It can be present alongside Red Thread/Pink Patch. Reported incidence of this disease has increased substantially in recent years.

Grass species involved

The disease is common on turf containing Slender Creeping Red Fescue on bowling greens. Sea marsh turf, which contains a high proportion of this grass species, is particularly susceptible. The disease rarely attacks other grass species. Although occasionally reported on Chewings Fescue, its effect is not as devastating as attacks on Slender Creeping Red

Other influencing factor

In common with Red Thread / Pink Patch, this is a low fertility disease. Hence they are some-times found together.

Control measures

• Apply a suitable fertiliser to remedy nutrient deficiencies - usually nitrogen is the culprit• Apply a suitable fungicide
