MILESTONES
ANGELO RAVANOThe founder
Contship is the abbreviation of CONTAINER and SHIPPING.
The founder of Contship, Angelo Ravano, converted all the family traditional tonnage and started with fully containerised ships in 1969, with the slogan “we bring the ship to your factory”. Contship is a pioneer of containerization as per following milestones.
The first liner service is operated from Fos-sur-Mer to Casablanca with M/V Sea Maid (82 TEUs of loading capacity).
1969
Container terminal operations commence in La Spezia.It is the first Italian private container terminal.
1971
Contship operates the first ever liner service from Europe to India.
1977
Contship establishes Eagle Container Line, the first independent liner service from Europe to Australia.
1982
Operations commence at La Spezia Container Terminal at Fornelli Pier.
1987
Sogemar is merged with Intermodale Italia, creating the largest private intermodal network in Italy.
1990
Contship launches Medcenter Container Terminal in Gioia Tauro: transhipment arrives in Italy
1995Contship Containerlines business is sold to CP Ships.
1997
Eurokai becomes the main shareholder of Contship Italia Spa.
1999
Terminal Container Ravenna joins the terminals network.
2002
Operations commence at Tangier.
2008Contship terminal in La Spezia operatesthe largestcontainership(16,600 TEUs capacity) ever calling at an Italian port.
2015
Contship Italia SpA inaugurates its new Headquarter in Melzo, Milan.
2014
Oceanogate Italia, the Group rail traction company, starts its operations.
2012Melzo improves its value added service offer by opening a new maintenance workshop for rolling stock, in partnership with Bombardier Transportation.
2017

2019
Rail Hub Milano inaugurates the new development of the Milan based (Melzo) logistics platform.

Eurokai was founded by Kurt Eckelmann in 1961. Today, through the holding Eurogate and Contship Italia, it operates and controls the largest shipping line independent container terminal network in Europe. Eurokai is managed by Thomas Eckelmann, whose vision and entrepreneurial commitment in developing the Italian container
terminals business was given official recognition in June 2006, when he was made a “Commendatore” of the Italian Republic (Order of Merit).
The sixth generation of the Eckelmann family, represented by Tom and Katja, is now representing Eurokai in the Contship Italia Group’s Board.
