Conventions of Neo-Noir in the trailerLaura Garcia Del Pino

This is the logo that Emily made in Photoshop , this is the logo four our production company Black City Productions. We chose to create an urban landscape to show the typicality of neo-noir convention. But obviously as it was only a production company we wouldn’t only be creating neo-noir films, but we would be creating films of a same serious nature, of drugs, romance and mystery.

• The first scene of the trailer shows a tracking shot of our main antagonist character walking towards the camera with a deep depth of field, by focusing the scene on the cigarette on the ground. Tracking shots are very typical in many noir films which can be seen in neo-noir series such as ‘True Detective. The next clip shows a close up shot of the cigarette in a high angle as if the character is looking down on it. This scene shows the convention of mystery and the use of codes in the shot. The use of codes adds complexity to the narrative , in which neo-noir narratives are also full of codes and complexity, this then encourages the audience to try and decode the code presented by the producer. This type of convention can be seen in other mystery style films such Sin City (2005).

• We took inspiration for the use of a cigarette as a code by watching Brick (2005) where they also use a cigarette for a code to be used by the protagonist. we used a very deep depth of field to directly focus all the attention on the cigarette.

We used a mid-shot and close up of the protagonist to show his world weariness, which can be seen in the mise-en-scene as the actor uses tense and worried facial expressions and physicality. Because of the use of a deep depth of field it blurs out the background and make it darker, presenting a mysterious and obscured atmosphere . Which is also another very typical convention of neo-noir films such as Brick (2005).

These shots were changed in post production to make them more saturated and give them a blue tone to them which can be seen in different neo-noir films such as Brick(2005) and Sin City (2005). This effect gives a sense of dystopia which is a common convention of neo noir films, in Sin City Saturation is used in the film although black and white it included primary colours in several scenes.

These shots of the ‘the girl’ shows a dead body this clearly shows a theme of violence and crime of the film trailer which is one of the most common conventions of neo noir that we wanted to keep when planning the trailer. This can be clearly seen in the film Brick (2005)

This is a shot in where chiaroscuro lighting was used to heighten the contrast of light in the shot which heightens the intensity of the action. This is a modern take of the convention as in classic noir film blinds and objects would be used to show the shadows.

In this shot we end the trailer with the protagonist running away but two clips start to merge to again show an obscured atmosphere in which will question why the main character is running away.
