NEW PARISHIONER

REGISTRATION This weekend, November 4th and 5th we will have New Parishioner Registration after Masses for those who would like to become a registered member of our St. Bonaventure Community.

BLOOD

PRESSURE SCREENING Blood pressure screening will be after all Masses next weekend, November 11th and 12th, in the St. Francis Room.

Dear Parishioners, Both the first reading from the Book of the Prophet Malachi and the reading from the Gospel of Matthew this weekend bring up the issue of leaders who betray the trust that was put in them and use their positions for their own gain. God (through the prophet Malachi) and Jesus came down hard on these leaders, and rightly so. The position they had was one of service of the people, not one of service of their own interests. Of course, that is still an issue today. Both in the church and in the secular arena we have ample examples of leaders who do not serve the people but rather have betrayed our trust by serving their own agenda. Jesus sets things right when he says: “The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” Those who are in leadership positions in the church and in government need to take these words to heart. In truth, we all need to take these words to heart. In the gospel Jesus is addressing the crowds with these words, and today he is addressing us. We are meant to be those who serve the needs of our brothers and sisters. We are true to our identity as followers of Christ when we focus on and serve the needs of those around us. Fr. Richard Reflection Question: How do I serve the needs of those around me? How could I do better?

WEEKEND PRAYER

MINISTRY Do you have a special need or intention you would like prayer for? A prayer team will be here today (and every week) immediately after both the 8:00 am and the 10:00 am Mass in the front corner of the church. They will be waiting there to pray individually with you, confidentially, for whatever you request. We trust in the mercy and love of Christ to meet you in that need. We encourage you to give it a try.

ALTAR SERVER TRAINING Annual Altar Server Training will take place on Saturday, November 11 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm in the Church. Please contact John Bauch [email protected] with any questions.

COAL FUND COLLECTION The collection will be next weekend and we urge everyone to consider making a donation to this important fund. It is the source of money to fund special projects that come up and were not in the budget. A recent example was to make additional repairs to the air handler in the Activities Building. The repairs were completed last week and now the handler is in top condition to meet our day to day needs. We often have these surprises and like to be prepared to handle them. We thank you for your great continued support of the Coal Fund.

PERPETUAL ADORATION SIGN-UP WEEKEND November 18-19, 2017

You may ask, why should we go to Adoration? Because Jesus wants it! “Could you not watch one hour with me?” (Matthew 26-40) We also have needs, hurts and sorrows that we can share only with our Lord and Savior, truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. St. John Paul II spent 2-3 hours daily in Jesus Eucharistic Presence and he tells us, “The Church and world have a great need for Eucharistic worship. Jesus awaits us in this Sacrament of love. Let us not refuse the time to go meet him…and making amends for the serious offenses and crimes of the world.” Fr. Matthew Malek will be our guest homilist at the weekend

Masses on November 18-19. He is in residence at our parish and at the present time, Fr. Malek is furthering his studies at St. Mary’s University. Many of you know him from morning Mass. You are invited to sign up for your own special Holy Hour that weekend. Please consider prayerfully this invitation. Do not be afraid to commit to your own hour. You will have another adorer (prayer partner) with you. There are others who help out if both you and your prayer partner are away at the same time. You will find peace there. Any questions, please call Pat at 952-888-1147.

MILITARY APPRECIATION

DINNER AND DANCE Once again, everyone is invited to join the fun and to honor those who have served in the military on Saturday, November 11, 2017, 5:30 pm - 9:00 pm. We will have dinner, followed by live Big Band music for those who love to dance! Come back to the ALIVE table for tickets and more information.

BOOK REVIEW The 12 steps to Holiness and Salvation from the works of Saint Alphonsus Liguor i. Parish library book review by Steve Archer

“Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. And the second is like it. Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:37-40. The 12 Steps to Holiness and Salvation is made up of selections from various wr itings of the Saint. The Order of Virtues is followed by the spiritual sons of St. Alphonsus in the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer which he founded. Each month of the year is assigned a particular virtue to which they devote their attention. This practice is recommended by Masters of the spiritual life. This study of virtues is a school of Christian perfection. Each virtue is studied in detail. Examples are given of the benefits and graces they give. Some of the values studied are Faith, Hope, Poverty, and Chastity. The main point of the book is for Catholics to have a firm foundation for their lives. This way they can work towards holiness here on earth and salvation in heaven. Reading The 12 Steps, St. Alphonsus gave me a sense of the path I must follow to save my soul. St. Alphonsus founded the Redemptorists and was a Bishop and writer. One of his best-known works is the Way of the Cross, still used today at Lent. Saint Alphonsus was canonized in 1839 by Pope Gregory XVI and made a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius IX in 1871. He is the Patron Saint of Confessors.

Parents trained with Risk Management (VIRTUS) are welcome to attend or assist at rehearsals. FAITH FORMATION Celebrate the Word (CtW) began last Sunday. Parents, please encourage your child to come forward for the blessing and dismissal when they are invited to just prior to the readings. CtW brings the Word of God to our children in language that they can understand and relate to which helps them to appreciate the Mass and our Catholic traditions. Please

encourage your child to attend CtW whenever it is offered at Mass. CtW is offered at the 10:00 am Mass three Sundays every month. First Reconciliation Parent Meeting took place 3 weeks ago. If you want your child to receive this sacrament (also known as Penance and Confession) but missed the meeting last week, please see Gary as soon as possible.
