WE HOPE YOU WILL WEAR YOUR PIN WITH PRIDE

The first Nightingale School of Nursing in the United States, at Bellevue Hospital, created the first school “badge” or “pin” as it later became known, which was presented to the class of 1880. The original pin contained a crane in the center to signify the nurse’s vigilance, an inner circular field of blue to connote constancy, and an outer circle of poppy capsules to symbolize mercy and the relief of suffering.

As time went on the individual schools developed their own distinctive pins (as well as caps and uniforms). The school of nursing pin was always worn very prominently on the uniform and proved to be a lasting symbol of considerable pride for the wearer and did indeed symbolize the nurse’s pride in the high standards of the training school from which the individual graduated.

The pin used for the Orvis School of Nursing was adopted in February 1958. The design of the pin is the university seal placed on the traditional “Nursing Apron.” At the top of the pin are the strings of the apron, which symbolize the apron strings of Florence Nightingale, who is acknowledged as the founder of modern nursing.

The Orvis School of Nursing at the University of Nevada, Reno was established in 1955 and was the first school of nursing in Nevada. Program offerings include a Bachelor of Science degree program for entry-level nursing; a totally online RN to BSN degree program for nurses with an associate degree who wish to complete a baccalaureate degree; a Master of Science in Nursing degree program to educate Clinical Nurse Leaders, Nurse Educators and Family Nurse Practitioners; and a Doctor of Nursing Practice Program. Post-MSN certificates are also available for all master’s specialties.

The Meaning of Academic DressHistorically, academic dress costumes date back to the eleventh and twelfth centuries to the first organized institutions of learning in Europe. In 1895, the academic institutions in the United States adopted a code of academic dress which gave this country a beautiful and impressive method of signifying scholastic honors. With the exception of revisions in 1932 and 1959, the code has been virtually unchanged since its inception.

CAPS: The black mortarboard is the most commonly used in the United States. The tassel, normally worn in the left front quadrant of the cap, is black, although it may be of the color appropriate to the subject of the degree. The tassel on the doctor’s cap is usually made of gold thread.

GOWNS: The bachelor’s gown has a long, pointed sleeve; the master’s gown has an oblong sleeve open at the wrists (or some older gowns may open near the upper part for the arm); the doctor’s gown is fuller than the others with velvet panels full length on the front, and three velvet crossbars on each sleeve in black or in a color distinctive of the subject pertaining to the individual’s degree. The color associated with nursing is apricot. The gowns are black except for the doctor’s which may be a color representing the institution that awarded the degree.

HOODS: The hood, draped over the shoulders and down the back, indicates both the institution granting the degree and academic area of specialization. The silk lining of the hood represents the color, or colors, of the institution from which the degree was received. The higher the degree, the more lining is revealed. The level of the degree is designated by the length of the hood and width of the velvet edging. The color of the velvet edging signifies the field of learning.

COLORS: The colors associated with the various academic areas include:
