TODAY'S HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENTS
ROBERTA MAY MCKAY AND ELMER EDWARD BRENNER
Roberta McKay and Elmer Brenner are well-known in Regina and throughout the province for their philanthropic activities, particularly in support of the arts and health care. They have also become synonymous with the revitalization of the University of Regina’s College Avenue campus. The couple served in an advisory capacity to help create plans for the campaign to rejuvenate the campus, Building Knowledge, and in 2012 donated $250,000 towards it. Now they are able to watch the refurbishing of Darke Hall and the College Building, just a short walk from where they live and work. In 2014, they donated a Faziloli piano for use in Darke Hall, stipulating that students have access to the world-class instrument. The piano is temporarily located on the main campus while construction continues, but the couple is looking forward to its return, and the restoration of Darke Hall to its historic place as a community performance centre.
McKay, a dermatologist, and Brenner, a visual artist, sponsor free Regina Symphony Orchestra programs at local library branches, the Regina Music
Festival Association, and the annual Saskatchewan Fashion Forward Designer Award. The couple also founded and supported the Saskatchewan Health Care Excellence Awards, which for ten years recognized the achievements of outstanding health care workers. Both have received a number of individual awards over the years: the City of Regina named Brenner volunteer of the year in 1978-79, and CTV Regina honoured McKay as Citizen of the Year in 2007.

STUDENT AWARDSGOVERNOR GENERAL'S ACADEMIC GOLD MEDALThe Governor General's Academic Gold Medal recognizes the outstanding academic performance of a graduate student. The decision of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research Scholarship and Awards Committee was based on the quality of the thesis or exhibition, external examiner’s report, quality of the defense, course work, cumulative grade point average, publications and presentations deriving directly from the research done for the thesis or exhibition, and on awards achieved.
This year, Dr. Thuntida Ngamkham is the recipient of this most distinguished prize. Dr. Ngamkham graduates with a Doctor of Philosophy in Statistics.
Dr. Ngamkham graduated with an average of 95.0%. Her supervisor, Dr. Andrei Volodin says that “Dr. Ngamkham’s main achievement that makes her dissertation exceptional, is her research connected with two main strategic goals of our University of Regina. Namely, Indigenization and research on Water Quality. Chapter 5 of her thesis, entitled "Modeling of Water Quality Dynamics Using Indigenous Knowledge" is devoted to developing a model to use the aboriginal peoples environment evaluation skills for describing water quality dynamics in the aboriginal communities. This has never been done before.”
Dr. Ngamkham is also heavily involved in her academic community. She routinely participates in educational activities at the University of Regina. She runs sessions for students of all ages at the Math Circle and Math Camp. She also works in the University of Regina Statistical Consulting Service. Each year, this office receives serious requests for statistical consulting form business managers, medical doctors, veterinarians, engineers, sociologists and others.
From her research, Dr. Ngamkham has published five papers in high level statistical journals, two international conference proceedings, and has visited Fu Gen Catholic University, in Taiwan; the University of Pisa, in Italy; and the University of Western Australia for seminar talk presentations. One of Thuntida’s papers is published in one of the most top rated journals in this research area “Statistics and Probability Letters”. There are several papers currently submitted for publication and more than six projects currently being worked on now.
The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research congratulates Dr. Thuntida Ngamkham.

Outside of her academics, Belma has served as a dedicated volunteer in several local organizations. Since 2015, Belma has volunteered with Diabetes Canada, and is now the primary speaker for presentations in the Regina area. On a monthly basis, she delivers the Let’s Talk Diabetes material. As a result of her outstanding work with Diabetes Canada, she was awarded their 2018 Regional Volunteer of the Year Award. Since 2016, Belma has been a member of the World University Service of Canada (WUSC) Local Committee at the University of Regina. Through her work with WUSC, she facilitated various aspects of settlements and support for new and long-term refugees to Regina. She has also participated in a Blanket Exercise to explore our relationships with Indigenous youth. Her reflections on the Blanket Exercise can be found on the WUSC website. Since 2017, Belma is an active volunteer for the SEARCH (Student Energy in Action for Regina Community Health Inc.) initiative. SEARCH is a student-run, interdisciplinary, primary health care initiative situated in the North Central community of Regina. Within this organization, Belma’s primary duties are cooking, childcare, and facilitating women’s groups with members of the community.
Belma is not only an outstanding academic, but also a compassionate person that’s led her to become a strong leader both on and off campus. The Faculty of Science congratulates Belma on her accomplishments and wishes her the best of luck with her future endeavours.

ACADEMIC REGALIAThe academic regalia worn by the graduates and the members of the platform procession may consist of a gown, a hood or stole (worn over the shoulders), and a hat or mortarboard. All universities have distinctive academic dress for each degree conferred and, at times, for the disciplines in which the degree is awarded. Hence, the colourful variety of academic dress worn by members of the platform procession, who have graduated from dozens of Canadian and international universities, and represent particular groups.
With the exception of students graduating with a PhD and federated college students, graduates wear black gowns. PhD graduates’ gowns are scarlet with royal blue around the collar, down the front and around the sleeves. Students graduating from the University of Regina who have been registered through a federated college wear the following: red gowns for Campion College students, sky blue gowns for First Nations University students, and royal blue gowns for Luther College students. Students are welcome to wear their Indigenous ceremonial dress, other cultural ceremonial dress, or their military or law enforcement dress uniform with, or instead of the gown at the Convocation ceremonies. In these instances, graduands must still be hooded and wear the University of Regina hood. At today’s ceremony, the dean of their respective faculty formally hoods students. The University of Regina also permits members of the Platform Party to hood graduates of their immediate family.

The University of Regina is situated on Treaty 4 lands with a presence in Treaty 6 territory. These are the territories of the nêhiyawak (Cree), Anihšinapek (Saulteaux), and Dakota, Lakota, and Nakoda, and the homeland of the Métis. Today, these lands continue to be the shared territory of many diverse peoples from near and far.

The Executive of the University of Regina Council (Executive of Council) has been empowered by Council to act on its behalf in all matters with the provision that requesting a special meeting of Council may challenge a decision of the Executive. Executive of Council membership is devised as a proportional basis of the academic composition of this University.
Disciplines that are related to one another in the broader areas of teaching are, for purposes of administrative and academic planning, brought together into faculties, of which there are currently ten. Each faculty is headed by a dean; formal membership includes the dean and the teaching members of the various associated disciplines. The deans are recognized by The University of Regina Act as being the chief executive officers of their respective faculties and are directly responsible to the President, through the Provost and Vice-President (Academic). Subject to the statutes of the Senate and the University of Regina Council, each faculty has charge of all matters of scholarship in its disciplines and programs.

SHELDON SCOTT KENNEDY Presented on Wednesday, June 6
Sheldon Kennedy is one of Canada’s most forceful advocates for the prevention of abuse and bullying, stemming from his own experience of being sexually abused by his coach while playing for the Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League. Kennedy captained the team to a Memorial Cup win in 1989, and then played professional hockey for ten seasons. He went public about the abuse he suffered in 1996 and began campaigning to educate people about what action to take if they suspect that abuse might be taking place. In 1998 he roller-bladed across Canada to highlight the issue, raising $1.2 million to support the bullying and abuse prevention programming delivered by the Canadian Red Cross. He and business partner Wayne McNeil later founded Respect Group, which delivers online training programs aimed at preventing bullying, abuse and harassment in sports, education and workplace settings. More than one million individuals have completed one of the three programs, and are Respect Certified.
Kennedy’s story and his advocacy work have attracted recognition in the form of a television movie and a video documentary about his life. In 2013, the Child Advocacy Centre in Calgary - where he is the lead director - was renamed in his honour. Kennedy has received several leadership awards and two honorary degrees. He was named to the Order of Canada in 2015 for his commitment to abuse prevention and support for young victims of abuse.
BRADLEY JOHN HORNUNG Presented on Friday, June 8
Bradley John Hornung was born in Regina in February 1969, and was an 18 year-old player with his hometown Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League (WHL) when he experienced an unimaginable setback. His dream of a professional hockey career ended during a game in March 1987, when he suffered a severe spinal cord injury after an awkward body check by an opposing player. He humbly denies it, but he was considered one of the most talented players in the WHL, a likely pick in the National Hockey League’s entry draft.
His life changed completely that night, but Hornung bore no anger toward the player involved, instead he faced his future with courage and perseverance. He completed high school at Archbishop O’Neil High School, and then continued his education at the University of Regina. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History from Campion College and later took several classes through the Faculty of Business Administration. He worked for many years as a scout for the National Hockey League’s Chicago Black Hawks and
now assesses junior hockey players for the NHL’s central scouting bureau. In this capacity he attends every Regina Pats home game from his familiar vantage point in the Brandt Centre.
The Regina Pats have honoured Hornung by retiring his number eight jersey, and the WHL annually awards the Brad Hornung trophy to the player who best exemplifies talent, determination, and sportsmanship.
