1 Tri-City Regional Chamber of Commerce

Guest EditorialGrowth and Progress Abound!By Lane Savitch, COO, Kadlec and Providence St. Mary Medical Center

Health care is in the news on almost a daily basis, not only at the national level, but statewide and locally, too. Efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, require constant attention to try and follow all that is happening.

Here in our community, impacts are also being felt. Each of our health organizations is doing its best to anticipate and deal with the uncertainties and financial challenges of our current health care climate. In spite of all of this change and transition, physicians, nurses and all of our clinical staff must keep an unwavering focus on providing the safest and highest quality care possible. In addition, we have all come to realize how important the patient experience is to the care we provide. These are tall orders in light of all of the distractions of the change and uncertainty.

The one thing all three health systems have in the Tri-Cities is our community. Regardless of our organization structure, or our affiliations, we have an obligation to that community, not just in providing the very best care when patients arrive at our door, but also to expand our collective focus on how we can help the community improve its health. We truly believe that this is the only way we will be successful as a society in controlling the cost of health care. It won’t be easy, and no organization can do it alone. All three health systems need to partner together, with the counties, the health district, the school districts, the cities, and many others who can play a part in this effort.

All of these changes will not be easy. But they present an opportunity to take a fresh look at how our communities address our collective health care needs. I welcome the opportunity to begin this very important dialogue and continue our unwavering focus of providing safe, compassionate care to the region we serve.

Every year since 1963, the President of the United States has issued a proclamation

announcing National Small Business Week, which recognizes the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business

owners.

More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they create

about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year.

The Tri-City Regional Chamber of Commerce works to provide a platform for our

members to grow their business and expand the local economy.
