Problems & Solutions

Corrosion Control

Corrosion occurs naturally when the metal tends to revert back to it’s original stable form, where it was derived from, the Ore. Basically, dissolved oxygen in the water attacks the metal surface & converts the metal to it’s oxide form. However, as given below, in order to control the corrosion process, either or both sides of the corrosion cell should be stopped.

This means that properly selected Corrosion inhibitors should have the capacity of controlling Cathodic & Anodic sites of the corrosion cells. Thus, the corrosion process will be under control as long as the inhibitor reserves are maintained within specification limits.

Eflo-Chem® Corrosion Control Programs include a series of inhibitors to meet the International Standards of Corrosion Control. Anodic Corrosion Inhibitors & Cathodic Corrosion Inhibitor Programs are effectively formulated to take care of the corrosion process & minimize it’s effect.

Traditional corrosion inhibitors like in-organic & organic phosphates , zinc, nitrites, molybdates, carboxylates, polymers…. etc, are available. However, Eflo-Chem® has combinations of Specific Organic Inhibitors which are formulated to offer synergistic effects of Corrosion Control for all metals at lower dosage rates.

Scale deposits in cooling tower condenser

3

Scale-Deposition-Fouling Scale is a common problem encountered with most of the open recirculating cooling water systems. The higher the water hardness, the higher the chance for scale deposition on the hottest & critical zones of the cooling system. The most common scalant is Calcium Carbonate, then Calcium Phosphate, Magnesium Salts.

Accumulation of general debris, solids, sludge as well as iron oxides is called Deposition. This ends up with system fouling, specially the heat transfer areas. This fouling results in severe problems to cooling water systems & affects the system’s overall performance. More over, deposition promotes corrosion, particularly under-deposit corrosion.

This is the most dangerous type of corrosion for continuously running systems. Pitting Corrosion may be developed which may end up with pin-holes, that may lead to un scheduled shut downs & production losses.

Eflo-Chem® COOL-TREAT Dispersant Programs are designed to handle such problems. Basically , once the system survey is conducted properly & the systems stresses are defined, then a customized program will include a specific dispersant program to handle this type of deposit & fouling.

Suspended Solids

Open Cooling Towers act as air-scrubbers. This way, all air-born particulates including sand, dust, general debris, trashes & bacteria are vulnerable to get en-trained to the Cooling Towers. Closed Cooling Water Systems rarely face fouling problems due to accumulations of suspended solids, as long as they are well chemically flushed from the beginning.

However, since the Cooling Tower system is a dynamic model & the water keeps circulating with continuous evaporation, the chances for suspended solids accumulation becomes higher. Therefore, with the help of Cooling Tower Blowdown, Suspended Solids level may be reduced but will never be controlled well if the Cooling Tower is located in open areas or the area is vulnerable to sand or dust storms in the region.

In these cases, Tower Blowdown will not be enough to control suspended solids. Side Stream Filtration becomes an essential decision to control solids. Many Cooling Towers are equipped with Side Stream Filtration systems. But unfortunately , more than 80% of the current installations are capable of removing particulates greater than 200 microns only. In many cases system surveys confirm that system fouling occurred due to accumulations of very fine particulates specially less than 80 micron size.

Micro-Biological Growth Fouling

Normal conditions for all cooling water systems act as an ideal environment for microbiological growth. Typically Bacteria (Aerobic & An-Aerobic) , Fungi & Algae are expected to grow in Open Cooling Tower Systems. And different types (Anaerobic) of Bacteria may grow in Closed Cooling Water Systems. Therefore, water left un-attended for even short periods of time may enhance the growth of microbiological growth which may lay down bio-films.

Bio-Film & Legionella Bacteria

Bio-films reduce heat transfer since it’s thermal conductivity is too low. This affects Heat Exchangers, Coolers, Evaporators, Cooling Tower Fills, & other equipments. More over, these bio-films are difficult to remove & may enhance Microbio Induced Corrosion (MIC). Also, the presence of certain types of Bacteria , specially the Anaerobes , when Bio-Film Environment & sludge is available, increases the Health Risks.

Major Risks are encountered if Legionella Bacteria is found in the water. This type of Bacteria may end up with a dangerous type of Disease called Legionnarire’s Disease. The chance of having this type of bacteria grow in the water becomes high if the water becomes stagnant or semi-stagnant for elongated periods. This applies for even water tanks, cold & hot water circuits, shower water circuits, fire fighting water systems.

Eflo-Chem® Biocide Programs are well designed to handle contaminated systems & overcome the problems only after having a risk assessment survey on the system. Thereafter, A dedicated Team work on the contaminated system & offers a complete Disinfection Program for effective biocidal activity against any bacteria. Additionally, our Teams select , when given the chance, the proper treatment programs to keep the water systems disinfected well all the time & pro-actively, test for bacteria counts regularly.

Closed Loop Systems

Cold & Hot Closed Water Systems typically get very low make up water since no evaporation is expected. In such systems, scale formation is not the major problem. Almost the same applies for Fouling problems. But , Corrosion Attacks & Biological Growth & Bio-Fouling become the major problems for these systems. However, the main difference between hot water & cold water (Chilled Water) Closed systems is the Temperature & Metallurgy. As a rule of thumb, the corrosion rate doubles for every 10 Degrees F increase of the circulating water.

Eflo-Chem® COOL-TREAT Programs for closed systems are based on blends of inhibitors to handle all types of corrosion , fouling & bio-fouling. These inhibitors are like, Green-Chem Organic Programs, Nitrites, Borates, Molybdates, Alkalis, Nitrates, Silicates, Tannins, Azoles, as well as certain types of polymers carefully selected to suit all metallurgies & condition all types of waters.

Enhanced Corrosion Protection Threshold Effect

When traditional programs are adopted to treat a cooling water system, the dosage rate is calculated stoichiometrically. This means for a specific amount of hardness , iron or other foulants , the dosages of the inhibitor are calculated (summed) to give the total dosage required. But, when properly selected treatment programs like Eflo-Chem® COOL-TREAT Series which are Threshold Inhibitors based ones, the dosages are lower that the traditional ones. Basically, it does not need the same amounts to offer good inhibition. Instead, much lower dosages are required to offer even superior results.

Sequestration Phenomenon

Eflo-Chem® Programs employ the Sequestration phenomena to form stable water soluble complexes with foulants like Calcium, Magnesium (Hardness) & Iron. The Sequestration values of these programs are high, thus more assurance for inhibition once dosed as per recommendations.

Dispersion Phenomenon

Dispersion is basically the process of “Dispersing the Particulates or newly formed nucleations of Particulates” . This process makes the agglomeration of growing crystals & other particulates more difficult.

Eflo-Chem® Programs are strongly adsorbed on to particulate surfaces, thus imparting repulsive charges. Therefore, all the time the metal surface will be free of fouling since these particulates are not flocculating with each other & chances become very slim of having deposition on heat transfer surfaces.

Finally, EFLOCHEM had developed a series of Multi-Functional Treatment Programs tagged with selected blends of dispersants to offer the optimum dispersion capacity against any fouling or deposition.
