Principal’s Report

Welcome back to 2014.

We have started the year with a number of new staff: Emily Leon in English, Rebecca Nixon in Art, James Kiely in Maths, our new Head Teacher Science Dennis Brown and myself as Principal.

These staff have featured in recent local newspaper articles and are a welcome addition to our staff.

Our grounds and school are in excellent shape due to the work done by our cleaners and ground staff over the holidays; it really looks like an Oasis at present.

I was also delighted to see the vast majority of students arrived in full school uniform last week and continue to wear their uniform with pride throughout week two. Please encourage your child to continue to wear their uniform throughout the year.

I spent last week meeting with staff and students and talking to them about my expectations for this year. Respect for yourself, the people around you and the environment was a common theme as was developing a strong work ethic and always trying to do your best.

When speaking to our senior senior students I also spoke about last years HSC results and how well Coomealla High School students performed in 2013, especially Ryan, Jess, Molly, Ellen, Taylah, Dylan, Max and Sarah. As a parent of recent HSC students myself I not only know how much work students need to put in at home to achieve these results but how supportive parents also make a huge difference; my thanks to the students for their hard work and to the parents for their on going support.

I have also started connecting with our partner Primary Schools with a view to introducing and extending on some joint activities for both staff and students. More information on this will appear over the next few newsletters.

We have been lucky enough to secure a bus run from Mildura for the next 3 years. This is due to the hard work of many people, especially Phil Gee; sincere thanks to all involved.

Once again Coomealla High School is proud of the achievements of our students. Year 12 (2013) student, Sarah Watts, was awarded the ‘Young Citizen of the Year and members of the U/14 Wentworth District Junior Football team were presented with the ‘Junior Sports Team Award’ at the Wentworth Shire Australia Day Awards Presentation.

On 7 January at the Mallee Sports Star Awards Coomealla students were once more well represented. Of particular note were the Sunraysia Lakers Baketball team consisting of Tyreece Kelly, Tyler Tyers, Liam Lawson and Tarryn Shaddock who were the junior team of the year. Tyreece Kelly also won the Indigenous Sports Star of the Year award. Well done to all for this magnificent achievement.

Particular thanks to Ms Josephine Crowley and Mrs Jo Pardoe for ensuring a smooth start to the year. Their hard work and attention to detail is amazing. They are certainly my "right hand women."

We have had an excellent start to the year, let's continue this way.

Ms Jo Scott

Welcome to New Staff - 2014

Rebecca Nixon Hello Coomealla Community and students. Thankyou all for the warm welcome and help in finding my way around the school and community at different times.

I am excited to be working at Coomealla High in Visual Arts and Special Education. I look forward to the coming year and all the fantastic adventures and challenges a new year and new school brings.

Emily Leon My name is Emily Leon. In 2013 I graduated from the University of Notre Dame, Broadway, with a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education majoring in both English Literature and Theatre Studies. Throughout my University degree I was fortunate enough to be a recipient of the DET Scholarship program which, ultimately, led to my placement as the new English/Drama teacher here at Coomealla High School.

I am very excited to have this opportunity to not only develop and hone my skills as a teacher, but also to build ties within the greater community.

James Keily I was born in 1987, lived my first years in Goulbourn, NSW. At age 8, my mother retrained work as a counsellor and we moved to Forbes, NSW. I played rugby league for many years and I stayed in Forbes until I finished school in 2005.

I went to the University of Wollongong for my mathematics degree. Last year I did a graduate diploma in education and became qualified to teach. I am enjoying Coomealla High School and am happy to be teaching here, as I have family in the area.

I have found the community here to be very friendly and receptive. I have been going to football training with the Wenty Roos and am hoping to play some reserve grade games. As a former rugby league player; I can’t bounce, handball or kick but I am working on changing that.

Farewell Chris Plumridge At our staff luncheon on the last day of 2013 school year, the staff farewelled Chris Plumridge after many years of service at Coomie.

Chris wore numerous hats; some of these included Member of “Write to Right” Team, valuable member of the Learning Support Team, In Class Tutor, but she is best known for her talent for securing resources for the students at the school.

She will be missed by students & staff.

We wish her all the best for her retirement.

Welcome back to Duncan Driscoll

Science News

Wentworth Community Bank Laura Bysouth and Sarah Clothier were presented with certificates at the first 2014 Community Bank board meeting for their roles as Young Observers over the last 12 months. The observers do not have any access to personal banking information but they are involved in the grant process as well as all matters relating to the operation of the business.

The girls were able to obtain funding for the USB sticks and Ipad which were given out as prizes for our ‘Superdraws’ for the schools PBL system.

As Laura and Sarah will be studying locally this year, they have been invited to remain involved at the Wentworth Community Bank to continue to provide a youth perspective.

Samantha McLean has been appointed as the observer on the board for 2014. If anybody has any ideas on how the Community Bank can assist with youth programs this year, Sam is the person to talk to. The Driver Education courses will continue as the response from over 70 students who have participated so far has been extremely positive.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) At the end of 2013 we had our ‘PBL Superdraw’ for all students who received purple slips throughout the year as acknowledgement of them following the school values. The prize was an Ipad which was donated by The Wentworth and District Community Bank.

TARISSA MITCHELL was the winner.

The PBL committee is looking to obtain more prizes for further draws this year. All you need to do to be eligible for purple slips is follow the Coomie values.

Mildura Bus It has been a long time coming, but a viable option to provide transport for our Mildura based students to continue their education at Coomealla High has finally been achieved. Thanks to the work of Vanessa Dyke and a number of other people, the Victorian Education Department has successfully sourced funding to purchase a 25 seat mini bus that will be employed solely to complete this Mildura run.

As a result, this bus route will NOT be able to carry passengers who do not travel on this bus as regular passengers.

In the past, a number of students have used the Mildura service for transport to sport training, employment, socialising and a range of other activities. This will no longer be possible as the number of available seats for students that rely on this service to get home after school now prevents any other students from using the service.

Families and students who have used the service in the past to meet commitments, will need to make other arrangements to get to Mildura after school.

There are a few copies of the 2013 School Magazines available at the front office for $20 per copy.

Maths Online

MathsOnline is available again this year to all students. The yearly subscription is $20, which covers all syllabus content from kinder to year 12, in the form of tutorials and question sheets with solutions.

It is a valuable program to assist any student with their maths work and comes highly recommended by all staff in the maths department and students who have used it in the past.

If your child would like to access maths online, please pay $20 to the front office and then let Mr Stratford or Mrs Fraser know so that we can get you a login and password. If you would like more information please do not hesitate to contact any of the maths staff and we would be more than happy to show both you and your child the program and its benefits.

Recipe Corner:

Ham, pineapple and cheese pizza roles Makes 12 INGREDIENTS: 300g (2 cups) self-raising flour Pinch of salt 90g butter, cut into cubes 160ml (2/3 cup) milk Plain flour, to dust 60g (1/4 cup) pizza sauce 80g (1 cup) coarsely grated cheddar 150g sliced leg ham, coarsely chopped 1 x 225g can pineapple pieces, drained on paper towel Extra milk, to brush

METHOD: Preheat oven to 210°C. Line a baking tray with non-

stick baking paper. Sift the flour and salt into a large bowl. Use your fingertips to rub the butter into the flour

until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add the milk. Use a round-bladed knife in a cutting motion to mix

until evenly incorporated and the mixture begins to hold together.

Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead until smooth.

Use a lightly floured rolling pin to roll out the dough into a 30 x 40cm rectangle.

Spread the pizza sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a 2cm border around the edge.

Sprinkle with the cheddar, ham and pineapple. Starting from a long side, roll up firmly to form a log. Brush the edge with a little extra milk and press

down firmly to seal the log. Cut crossways into 12 equal portions, about 3cm

thick. Place scrolls on the prepared tray. Bake in preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until

golden brown. Remove from oven and set aside to cool.
