Arts District Chorale H. MICHIE AKIN, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
2007-2008 — A Season of Light MOONLIGHT H. Michie Akin, Conductor Tuesday, October 30, 2007, 8:00 p.m. Cathedral Guadalupe ~ 2215 Ross Avenue in the Dallas Arts District Let us send shivers down your spine and uplift your soul as ADC unites the macabre of Halloween and the ethereality of All Souls, exploring the light and dark sides of nature — both human and environmental. We’ll sing of love lost and life gained through death, aspects of nature both eerie and frightening, and supernatural beings. Rich with truly Gothic themes, the concert exploits the haunting acoustics of the Victorian Cathedral Guadalupe and includes readings from authors as diverse as St. John of the Cross, Emily Dickinson, and Edgar Allen Poe with music from Heinrich Schütz, Samuel Barber, Johann Sebastian Bach, Gyorgy Orban, Hugo Distler, John Taverner, and others. The performance will be preceded by a 7:30 p.m. carillon concert featuring the Cathedral’s 52-bell Dutch carillon — the largest instrument of its kind in the city of Dallas. STARLIGHT Constantina Tsolainou, Guest Conductor Friday, December 14, 2007, 8:00 p.m. Westminster Presbyterian Church ~ Corsicana, Texas Saturday, December 15, 2007, 8:00 p.m. First United Methodist Church ~ 225 Lovers Lane, Athens, Texas Join us for a Christmas gift to community centers outside of the Metroplex with one of history’s most beloved and popular masterpieces: G.F. Handel’s Messiah (Part I). A shining light of the international stage, acclaimed conductor Constantina Tsolainou leads the Chorale, orchestra, and a star-studded cast of soloists in a special guest appearance. This community outreach concert is offered free to the general public.

The Arts District Chorale 2007-2008: A Season of Light — continued CANDLELIGHT H. Michie Akin, Conductor Thursday, February 14, 2008, 7:00 p.m. & 8:30 p.m. Crow Collection of Asian Art ~ 2010 Flora Street in the Dallas Arts District Come settle in to the intimacy of the Crow Collection’s Gallery III as you are bathed in candlelight, caressed by gentle love songs, and surrounded by the sensuality of Asian art. The best part is that we’ve done all the planning for you: the evening offers an all-inclusive package with a candlelit, 3-course, prix fixe dinner and concert in the galleries, complete with a long-stemmed rose and chocolate truffle for your loved one. This sixth installment of our popular, standing-room-only concert promises to be a romantic Valentine’s celebration to remember. SUNLIGHT H. Michie Akin, Conductor Thursday, April 24, 2008, 7:30 p.m Dallas Museum of Art ~ 1717 North Harwood Street in the Dallas Arts District The Chorale concludes its Season of Light in collaboration with the Dallas Museum of Art for a panel discussion and concert celebrating the creative expression of light in visual and musical works of art. This event coincides with the DMA’s exhibition of works by “proto-impressionist” J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851), who late in his career experimented with the depiction of light, prefiguring one of the most exciting aspects of the Impressionist movement by some 40 years. A panel of visual artists, art historians, musicians, and musicologists will discuss both the similarities composers and painters share in trying to “depict” light and the unique challenges each art form faces. All programs subject to change rev 1 / 2007 June 29

The Odd Couple (Female version) By Neil Simon 1/25/08-2/16/08
Unger and Madison are at it again! Florence Unger and Olive Madison, that is, in Neil Simon's hilarious con-temporary comic classic look at life from the female point of view. Instead of a poker party that begins the original version, Ms. Madison has invited the girls over for an evening of Trivial Pursuit. Also the Pigeon Sis-ter have been replaced by the hilarious Constanzuela brothers. The play begins with a group of friends as-semble for Trivial Pursuit in the apartment of Olive Madison. The apartment mess is a good indication why her husband left her years earlier. Late to arrive is Florence Unger who just became separated from her husband. They fear that she might commit suicide. As life would have it, the slob Olive and the neat Flor-ence decide to move in together - with comic results. The patterns of the own disastrous marriages begin to reappear in this new arrangement.

Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber Lyrics by Tim Rice
7/11/08- 8/2/08 The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable. Joseph is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams, and his father's favorite son. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances from Potiphar's wife lands him in jail. When news of Joseph's gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh (wryly and riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his brothers, having suffered greatly, un-knowingly find themselves groveling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize. After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself leading to a heartfelt reconciliation of the sons of Israel. Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock 'n' roll, this Old Testament tale emerges both timely and timeless.

What is Cooperative Arts News?
The Mission: The CAN organization was created for the purpose of helping cooperative member arts organizations build audiences by supporting each other. CAN will send notifications to list members with news of member organizations' upcoming events and other arts news of interest. The Rules: 1. Since this is a "cooperative" of arts organizations supporting each other, member groups who
would like to post notices, agree to "receive" notifications from other member groups in return. Individuals will have the option at any time to "opt-out" if they choose not to receive future notifications by e-mailing the list manager.
2. In order to preserve the integrity and quality of the postings to this list and to prevent any unwanted "Spamming," all notifications that member groups want to send through this notification list must come through the list manager. Groups simply send an e-mail notification to the list manager with a descriptive write-up and it will be sent. If there are multiple notifications that need to go out, they may be grouped together to reduce the number of e-mails that are sent to the list.
If at anytime, you would like to be removed from this e-mail list or if you are a new organization that would like to join, please e-mail the list manager and your request will be acted upon in a timely manner. As always, thank-you for supporting the performing arts in the North Texas area! Regards, David Witherspoon List Manager [email protected]
Approximate Distribution: over 25,500 and growing!
