Thursday 16th February, 2017

It was great to see such a large turnout for our class information sessions yesterday. Research clearly shows that when students, parents and schools work together, student’s outcomes improve. I think we have made a great start to the year and look forward to getting to know all of our students and parents as the year continues.

Thank you to all of our P & C helpers for putting on the welcome BBQ. The P & C has already made a huge impact on student learning in 2017, with the purchase and installation of two touch screen panels in classrooms to kick start the year.

CAR PARK We are extremely lucky to have so many available car spaces to park in for the afternoon pick up. Please note that parking in the staff car park is rear to kerb only. The afternoon can be a busy time with lots of students and parents making their way home. Safety is everyone’s business!

STUDENT WELLBEING You will have received the student discipline policy with today’s newsletter. Please take the time to have a read over the policy with your children. It is important that the school and parents work together in maintaining high expectations in regard to student behaviour. All behaviour is a student’s best attempt at having their needs met, so it is important that school and parents work together in supporting our students.

WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECK

All parent helpers are now required by law to undertake the Working With Children Check. If you are planning on helping out around the school in any way, whether it be in the classroom, canteen, garden, etc you MUST have this check done. Please see Trish or Sue in the office for the details. I encourage you all to come in and help out in some way throughout the year. The check is simply a matter of filling out a form and completing the 100 point check. Students love seeing mum or dad helping around school and research shows the benefits to student outcomes when these types of links are made. We look forward to seeing you around the school in the future. Mr Quinnell PRINCIPAL

ART ATTACK Cooranbong Public School is proud of the creative contributions of the Art Attack students at this year’s Morisset Agricultural Show which took place on the weekend. Other participants were: Tilli E., Isaiah T., Tala A., Asec T., Missi M., Sarah K., Isabelle G., Keira H., Lily M., Liliana C., Jorja B., Elvan T. and Izzy W. Art Attack will resume for Term 1 in March. Art Attack afternoons will be held on Tuesdays (3.00pm till 5.00pm). I am looking forward to sharing many happy and creative hours with our school’s students in preparation for our Art Exhibition in Term 4 this year. During Terms 1 & 2 Year 3 to 6 students are invited to take part in Art Attack. Year 2 students are invited to join the classes in Term 3 of the year. CHILDREN’S UNIVERSITY Children’s University- Newcastle University has started and Cooranbong Public School have been invited to join children across the Hunter and Central Coast to be a part of this exciting new education program. The concept of Children’s University (CU) is to award different levels to certification to students for learning that occurs out of classroom hours: before school, during lunch, after school and at events that will be scheduled in the school holidays. Children’s University helps to develop social skills and

strengthen student’s aspirations and awareness of opportunities in their future, outside the normal school curriculum. Children’s University will be arranging school holiday programs, strengthening school clubs and linking community organisations to schools to allow opportunities for children to access exciting new learning events linked with lifelong learning. If your child is involved in an activity and you would like to have the learning hours stamped in their passport, please send contact details into Mrs Brown and have a conversation about CU with your activity contact so they know about this fantastic program prior to us calling them. Positive Behaviour for Learning is coming . . .

This year we are very excited to be continuing to introduce Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) into our

school. PBL is a whole school framework that actively promotes positive behaviour within the school and

local community. It is an inclusive framework that enables staff, students and the local community to work

together in a positive and proactive manner. In 2017 PBL will be rolled out in all schools across the Western

Shores Learning Alliance, as well as a couple of local preschools. This will encourage a consistent approach

to positive behaviour from the early years of learning right through to Year 12. Please keep an eye out for

more information over the coming weeks. In the meantime, if you have any questions or queries please

contact Mr Quinnell

CANTEEN NEWS In a couple of months the new NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy will start in NSW. The aim is to establish a healthy food and drink culture in schools. All public schools will, over time, implement this system. This new system incorporates “every day” and “occasional” foods including a new 5 star rating. This is a very similar rating to the ratings on packaged foods in the supermarket. This will take time. Any changes will be in the school newsletter and on the Facebook page. Congratulations to the 4 new Year 6 canteen helpers chosen last week by Mrs Le Roux and Ms Hamilton. They are Izzy, Dee, Caitlyn and Bradley. Welcome to the canteen! If you have any questions or would like to know more about the canteen please call Kay on 0432 275 276 or email [email protected] Canteen Roster Monday 20 Feb Sandra & Jo Tuesday 21 Feb Sue B. & Danielle Wednesday 22 Feb Tracey & Michelle Thursday 23 Feb Paula & ? Did you know that 1 out of 4 children don’t eat breakfast. A good breakfast fuels you up and gets you ready for the day. In general, kids and teens who eat breakfast have more energy and do better at school It boosts a child’s attention span, concentration and memory, which they need to learn in school. But what is a healthy breakfast? Try pairing whole grain cereal such as WeetBix with milk, toast with cheese, Vegemite or peanut butter or yoghurt with fruit. All are great!

Do you need childcare for your child? Mission Australia Early Learning Centre is located at 39
