I GRIM REST BAPTIST CHURCH
CONROE, TEXAS
HISTORY OF PILGRIM REST BAPTIST CHURCH
The Pilgrim Rest Baptist of Conroe, Texas was olganized in the yea( of 1901 by the Rev. P. A. North·
ington. Rev. J. J. James, Jr. served as the first secretary. The Deacon Board consisted of Brother Bill Miller,
Ervin Johnson, Valrey Jones and Jim Lee.
Before purchasing the present grounds, services were held In a house near our first branch. In 1903 the first Prilgrim Rest Church building was erected with the Rev. Northington ser.ving as carpenter. From 1901 to 1920 at which time his health failed him, he was a faithful servant. Among the many things accomplished under his administration was the purchase of the fir st bell, the first piano, the installation of lights, and the membership was increased greatly.
From Ma(ch 1920 to December 1920 the Rev. W. S. Brent served as assistant pastor. After the death of Rev. Northington, December 25, 1920, for several months the church was at sea, not knowing what to do but after a week's pr,ayer meeting, led by Brother B. B. Washington and Rev. W. S. Collins, the Rev. W. S. Brent was called to pastor the church. He served from 1921 to 1925, at which time he was called to another field of labor. Under his leadership the church was (epaired, the membership increased and a new pulpit stand was purchased.
In May, 1925, the Rev. B. S. Peoples was called to sltcceed the Rev. W. S. Brent as pastor of the church. He served faithfully for four years and many things were accomplished under his leadership.
The Rev. R. S. Cole succeeded Rev. Peoples in June, 1929 and served for twenty· three years as a dynamic leader until God called him August 12, 1952.
During the twenty· three years the church was completely revolutionized, the present building was erected, new pews installed, chur.ch property insured, Junior Church organized, four preachers and four deacons ordained and many members were added.
After the death of Rev. R. S. Cole, the members, though grief-stricken, realized the necessity of a leader and sought God's guidance in making a selection. On October 20th, James Samuel Curry, the p'resent min· ister, was called by the church to fill the vacancy and assumed official duties November 2, 1952. The church under his leadership has gained new vigor, the organizations are being revitalized and there is a great spiritual awakening, which has led to a tremendous increase in membership. With a vision into the future, the pastor along with the official staff set out to make plans for accommodating the great Increase. Their plans were presented to the membership which were heartily accepted and the work on the Education Building begun.
Today the visions of group planning together have become a reality. The present addition to the church Is the Education Building, consisting of twenty-eight rooms, namely: fifteen classrooms, a primary assembly room that can be used as four classrooms, a Beginners Department, Nursery Department, Combl. nation Library and Prayer room, Deacon's room, Choir room, Pastor's Study and General Church Office.
Rec~ntly ~he church has been completely renovated inside and veneered ~th ?r~ck. The comfort has been enhanced with carpeting. Central heat~ng and air conditioning, adding to the beauty of the Gethsemane scene, and a bulletin board highlighting the weekly calendar.
