Betty G. Guzman went peacefully to be with our Lord on Monday September 30, 2013. Betty was born to Ralph and Dolores Garcia of Winkelman, Arizona. Betty was a homemaker and also the local cake decorator over 35 years for birthdays, weddings and many other occasions. Betty was a loving wife, mother grandmother and great grandmother. Her hobbies consisted of ceramics, handmade crafts and watching the Arizona Diamond back games.Betty grew up in

Winkelman and moved to Dudleyville, Arizona where she raised her

family. She is survived by her husband Francisco Guzman “Pancho” and her four children, Frank Guzman of North Carolina; Daniel Guzman (Irma) of Dudleyville, Az; Robert Guzman of Dudleyville, Az; Laura Real (Michael) of Kearny, Az and John Guzman of Gilbert, Az. She had 20 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.She was the eldest of 10,

survived by 3 brothers Raymundo (Isabel) Garcia of Winkelman, Az; Louis (Vada) Garcia of Winkelman, Az; and Richard (Cecelia) Garcia of Tucson, Az. She was preceded in

Norma Celis, her son Jimmie Guzman and her granddaughter Angelica Guzman.Betty was very active in

her church at St Joseph in Hayden/Winkelman. She was a member of the Altar

Society in Winkelman and Hispanic Council in Tucson. She taught catechism classes for the children in Dudleyville for many years. Betty organized the bingo to raise funds for the church and many other fund raisers to support the community. She was the one who began to organize the first of many funeral luncheons to help the grieving families in the parish.Betty enjoyed visiting

with her friends but most of all loved keeping up

with the accomplishments of her grandchildren.In her life time she

traveled all over the world, but most of all she enjoyed traveling with her husband to Las Vegas. September 15th they celebrated 71 years married.Services for Mrs.

Guzman were held Saturday, Oct. 5, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hayden. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. and a Rosary recited at 9:30 a.m. Interment followed at Mt. View Cemetery in Hayden.

Sept. 22 Burglary was reported on Sunnyslope. Items valued at about $2,600 were taken. Pills were found all over the road in San Pedro near Pinitos Park. Upon investigation it was found that a male had spilled them on the ground and just left them there. He was advised of the danger of leaving pills on the ground especially near a park. Suspicious activity was reported on Lower Rd. The homeowner advised that there were people in the abandoned room/shed behind her property. Upon investigation, no one was found, but four small bags used for Methamphetamine were

FLORENCE, AZ (10/2/13) – On Sunday, September 29, 2013 at around 8:30am a Dodge Intrepid and a Harley Davidson motorcycle were involved in a collision about 10 miles South of Winkelman, AZ on State Route 77 near mile marker 124. Both victims on the motorcycle died as a result of the collision and have been identified as Daniel Everson, 63 of Oracle, and Donna

Jo White, 69 of the Tucson- area. White was pronounced dead at the scene and Everson was taken to University Medical Center in Tucson, where he succumbed to his injuries late on Sunday. The occupants of the Intrepid appear to have walked away from the scene. Authorities are asking that any member of the public with information on the whereabouts of

Anthony Carroll Arzaga, wanted for questioning, should contact AZ Department of Public Safety Detective Robert Marquez at 520-746-4586. Pinal County Attorney Lando Voyles said, “The public provided significant assistance so far in this investigation and we again return to them for help in locating Mr. Arzaga, as a person needed for questioning. I thank everyone who

contacted authorities in response to prior requests and look forward to ensuring the families of these victims receive justice.” Pinal County Attorney Voyles again expresses his thanks to those persons who offered information and certainly continues to encourage any person who believes they might have any information about this to come forward since the case remains under investigation.

By Vicki ClarkCopper Basin News Fr. Alex Tigga, MSFS, is very happy to have been appointed as the Administrator of the Infant Jesus of Prague Catholic Parish in Kearny. The patron saint of his order says “Bloom where you are planted”, and that’s what he plans to do.

Fr. Alex had been in Kearny since the middle of June and replaces Fr. Thomas Dekaa. “We have to be ready to work where the Lord want us to work,” Fr. Alex said. “The people here are very good and nice, I like them and things are really going forward very well and smoothly. I look forward with great hope to work with

Infant Jesus welcomes new administratorthe parishioners to build up the kingdom of God here on earth.” Fr. Alex was born and raised in India, the seventh child of eight. He came from a Catholic family and had a good Catholic education. He names his father as leading him to the sign of his vocation. He thought of going to work as a missionary from early childhood and dreamt of going to strange and distant lands and he has done just that. Fr. Alex joined the Congregation of Missionaries of St. Francis of Sales in 1985. He completed his orientation course after two years and then earned a B.A. in philosophy in 1991. He then entered into novitiate and made his first profession in May of 1993. In 1994, he completed his B.A. in Education and in 1998 completed Theology study. He added a Master’s Degree in History in early 1999 and was later ordained as a priest in the same year. His first appointment as a priest was to Hartmannpur Mission in UP where he worked as an assistant parish

priest and a teacher. He then opted to be sent as a missionary to Mozambique, Africa, and his mission began in December of 2001. He worked for 10 years in the area as an assistant parish priest, parish priest and rector in Minor Seminary in extreme conditions. Mozambique is a very poor country and backward in many areas according to Fr. Alex. “The country is poor but the cost of living is very high. We were mostly catering to the rural and undeveloped areas where roads are very bad and difficult to travel,” Fr. said. “At times we had to travel through the thick forests encountering elephants and other scary stuff.” During the 10 years Fr. Alex served in Mozambique he endured some very shocking and heart-breaking incidents including a frightful experience in 2004 when the rectory house was broken into by robbers and he and two others were injured. He also suffered several malaria attacks while in Africa. But in spite of all those experiences, Fr. Alex said he enjoyed working in Africa

and cherishes his memories of being there. “It was a time of growth and new experience for me,” he said. “I will always keep that treasure it in my heart.” After his mission in Africa, Fr. Alex asked to be sent to the USA. His request was granted and he arrived in the Diocese of Tucson in November of 2011. He was first appointed as Parochial Vicar at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Tucson. “Working in that Parish was a time of grace, good experience and a moment of

growth for me,” Fr. said. “I enjoyed working there and surely I will carry with me the memories of the life I lived there.” Fr. said he would like to thank all of the Infant Jesus of Prague parishioners for welcoming him and for all the love, help and support he has received. “Let us work together in the vineyard of the Lord, helping, supporting and encouraging each other,” he said.”In this way we will really move forward. God bless one and all in our parish and in Kearny.”

By Mila Besich LiraCopper Basin News After several months of discussion and community organizing, the Kearny Town Council voted unanimously to adjust the current ordinance on curfew and reinstate the use of the curfew siren. Any person under the age of 18 years old will have a curfew of 10 p.m. each day. For youth ages 16-18, they will have a curfew extension of 11:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. The curfew will not apply to those youth 18 and under who are accompanied by a parent, guardian, adult

relative or adult friend approved by a parent or guardian or if the person is attending to a school function, employment or urgent business and can give satisfactory account of why is not home after curfew. During the August meeting Mayor Hossler requested that the Attorney draw up two ordinances, one reinstating the curfew siren and one without the curfew siren. Community members communicated that they wanted the siren reinstated. Following the vote on the curfew ordinance, the council was briefed on

Curfew siren to ring once again; election dates setchanges to the municipal election laws. The Arizona State Legislature passed a law that would require municipal elections to be held in the fall of even numbered years rather than the spring; these new laws will take effect in January of 2014. In August of 2014 the primary election will

be held for Mayor Sam Hosler (two-year term) and Councilmembers Lana Dalton, Neil Gambell and Daniel Radcliffe (four-year terms). The new election ordinance approved will also require that those choosing to run in the upcoming elections will be required to collect 1,000

signatures or at least five percent but not more than 10 percent of the vote for Mayor in the last preceding Mayoral election. The primary election for these seats has been set for August 26, 2014, with the general election set for November 4, 2014. In other business the

Town of Kearny approved a contract with Colby & Powell for the Annual Financial Audit; approved and Intergovernmental Agreement with Pinal County for election services; and approved a street closure for Ray High School for the Homecoming Parade.

By John HernandezCopper Area News A replacement project for the Aravaipa Creek Bridge has been planned by the Arizona Department of Transporta-tion (ADOT). The bridge located on State Route 77 is approximately 10 miles north of Mammoth between mile marker 123 and 124 in Pinal County. The project will also include minor roadway improvements between the mile markers. The Aravaipa Creek Bridge replace-ment project is scheduled to begin this fall. ADOT plans include widening the bridge and replacing the piers, bridge deck and abutments. Construction is expected to take approximately 12 months to complete and will be done in two phases. This will allow traffic to be maintained during construction. During the project construction, tem-

porary traffic signals will be installed at both ends of the bridge and will be adjusted periodically to allow efficient movement of traffic across the bridge. There will be one travel lane open at all

times with traffic controls in place to allow alternating north and southbound traffic. Drivers should expect delays of five to ten minutes but no more than 15 minutes throughout the construction.

By Richard BravoCopper Basin News The Pima Roughriders displayed why they are the number one ranked team in division VI football by defeating the Ray Bearcats in a highly anticipated game 44-15 Friday night. The Bearcats, who this season have averaged 48 points a game and held opponents to an average of 15 points a game, had trouble on both sides of the ball. They gave up a season high in points and scoring a season low as they were handed their first loss of the season. The first quarter started out like anticipated, as both teams played tough allowing just one score each. The Roughriders struck first on a big run of 58 yards to take an early 6-0 lead. The Bearcats, not to be out done, came right back on their next possession to tie the game when quarterback Destry Yocum connected with receiver Dominic Bravo on a 7 yard touchdown pass. The PAT by Jacob Pace gave the Bearcats a 7-6 lead at the end of one quarter of play. With momentum being carried by taking an early lead and the use of home field advantage against the top ranked Roughriders, the Bearcats looked to capitalize on a big quarter. Passing Yocum completed 9 passes for 71 yards and a TD. Receiving Bravo had 3 catches for 39 yards and a TD. On the defensive side Yocum led with 12 tackles, 1 assist, and a sack. at Salt River High School. After earning the second-seed in pool play, the Bearcats defeated Superior High School to win the championship.

Head coach Rikki Galka said it was a good tournament for her team and provided good experience for some of her younger players.

They earned the top seed in next week’s league tournament at Ray High School Head coach Stacy Johnson stressed fundamental volleyball form beginning at the first practice in August. “Coach Kenyon (7th grade team) and I have a very structured

practice routine with both of our teams,” Johnson said. “We demand perfect practice so it carries over into the real match.” Johnson said the players on the team are enjoying their experiences on the volleyball team and it’s that team chemistry which is part of the formula for their success. “The girls have learned to have faith and believe in each other when they get the call to be in the game,” she said.

Part of coaching any sport is to put players in a position to achieve their greatest success. Coach Johnson believes in this coach philosophy. “The biggest positive for our girls is to play them at their strongest position,” she said. The players on the team must earn their playing time, according to Coach Johnson, by working hard at practice and in the classroom. The improvement of the players

from the first practice until now is evident as their undefeated record would attest. It’s the continued improvement that has it made a fun season for the players and coaches alike. “We had girls that started the season and could not serve and now most all of them can get the ball over the net when at the service line,” Johnson recalled. “As the season has gone on they have gotten stronger at the serving line as well as getting

more three touch vollies.” The Jr. Lady Cats look to win the league tournament on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at Ray High School. watching her team grow and improve as the season has gone on. “It’s really fun to watch them grow, play together, and really trust and help each other,” she said. “They played united and that’s what won the tournament.” The Bearcats are off this week during the break. They return to action on October 15, 2013 at St. Johns. Game time is 6:00 p.m.

By Georgie Wood([email protected])Special to the Copper Basin News I am so glad to have been able to finish the last revision of my manuscript in spite of the discomfort of the healing broken bone in my right hand and the result of arthritis in that hand (my writing hand!) after the removal of its cast. The final title of my manuscript is “A CREEKSIDE STORY - FROM BUCKBOARD DAYS TO ECOTOURISM”, but there may be a few changes as I have turned my story, that had been typed on my old, reliable typewriter, over to my daughter. Francie Meyer, who has shown great interest in arranging it into a proper format for

possible publication. Francie, who lives with her husband, Nick Meyer, on their Flying UW Ranch west of the San Pedro River, keeps very busy with her work there and her involvement in different interesting groups, so I know it will take time. Now, I have to get busy finding photos of people and places I had written about to add to the story! Any help will be appreciated! There is so much history of Aravaipa Creek and its surrounding area in Arizona. My story starts out with mention of the Aravaipa Apache Indian people, and the earliest non-Indian settlers along the western end of Aravaipa Creek. It also contains happenings, both good and bad,

as the years progressed, and because I had become the wife of an Aravaipa Creek rancher, I had heard many stories and learned much during the years I had lived along Aravaipa Creek. I am so thankful for those years. It is for that reason that I had sent a short story with a few pictures to C.J. Hadley, Publisher/Editor of the quarterly magazine “Range”. That story, which is included in the magazine’s current Fall issue of August 2013, is mostly about the American author and essayist Edward Abbey who had stated some of his very controversial views in a 1986 letter to my husband and myself. It is understandable why some of his views are

not appreciated by ranchers and cowboys! One of the interesting things about the Range magazine are the many comments made by its readers concerning stories that had been published in its issues, so I agree that Range is no stranger to controversy as has been stated in each issue..So far, I have not received any negative comments about my story that C.J. Hadley had titled “LETTER FROM EDWARD ABBEY”, but I won’t be surprised if there will be a few in the magazine’s Winter issue of December of 2013, especially from Abbey fans.
