Our beloved Mother, Laura Jean Stockwell Breneman, age 90, died peacefully on October 20, 2017 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Jean, as she was known to family and friends, was born on Christmas day, December 25, 1926, in Pontiac, Michigan to Elmer and Gertrude Stockwell. She moved with her mother and brother to Nebraska after her father died in 1935. Jean graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1942, at the age of 16; afterward she taught school in rural Nebraska, under an emergency program to staff schools following the onset of World War II. Also, she and her mother both worked in a munitions factory in Grand Island Jean married Ray Milton Breneman, a big band musician, in Grand Island, Nebraska in August 1945. At the end of that era, they moved to Arizona in 1951 when Ray found work with Kennecott. The family first lived

They moved to Kearny in 1958, when Kennecott built the town to accommodate the relocation of families from Ray and Sonora; as the open pit mining operation expanded. They were one of the first families to move to Kearny, and Jean spent 55 years of her life in this wonderful place. They raised their 10 children in Kearny, and toward the end of Ray’s life adopted two of their grandchildren. Ray passed away in 1987. Mother had a great love of theater, music and books, and instilled that love in her children. She was an avid participant in the town’s little theater group and an organizer of many “hootenannies” during the early 1960’s. Mom’s main focus was always the family but she had many jobs outside of home. She became a Certified Professional Secretary in the mid 1960’s, and worked for Kennecott for many years; starting as a statistical typist and finally as Kennecott’s first female frontline field repair foreman. She really loved her last two jobs, first as clerk for Justice of the Peace, Kelly Haddad, and then serving out his term as Justice for the Pinal County 6th District of Kearny and Superior following Judge Haddad’s death. Jean also served as an interim justice for the Mesa Municipal court for a year. She was a devout Catholic, and a parishioner of Infant Jesus of Prague Catholic Church in Kearny, serving as

volunteer secretary/bookkeeper for several years after the Parish was established. She regularly attended daily and Sunday Mass, and served in many roles, preferring to be a lector. A highlight of her life was when her childhood friend from Nebraska, George Knoell, became her companion. They had been family friends since childhood, and after his wife, Edna, died, they began seeing each other and fell in love. George moved from his home in Tempe to Kearny. They shared and enjoyed 16 years together, attending daily mass, traveling to visit family and friends around the country, and visiting many religious sites and shrines in the United States and Europe. Their favorite trip was to Rome and the Vatican at Christmastime one year. Also, they enjoyed an “around the world” trip. George passed away in 2013. Mom loved to talk, and her stories about her life, family and friends entertained everyone. She enjoyed games, especially Scrabble, and was a member of the bridge club in Kearny until it disbanded. She enjoyed, and always looked forward to, daily visits with her best friend, Bernice Hansen. She moved to Salt Lake City in 2013 to be closer to her daughter, Laura Joyce. She is survived by her children: Ray M. Breneman, Jr.; Laura Joyce (Sidney) Williams; Allison M. (Michael – (d)) Converse; Daniel F.(Donna) Breneman; John Reilly (Ay) Breneman; Timothy C. Breneman; Stephanie F. (George) White; Thaddeus E. Breneman; Cynthia K. Breneman; Geneva L. Breneman; and Joseph P. (Nancy) Breneman. She had 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother (Daniel K. Stockwell), her husband (Ray M. Breneman, Sr.), a son (Matthew D. Breneman), son-in-law (Michael L. Converse) and granddaughter (Deborah M. Starich). A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2017 at Holy Cross Catholic Church 1244 S. Power Rd., Mesa, AZ, at 10 a.m. Inurnment will follow at Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery, 1652 E. Baseline Rd., Mesa, AZ, where she will be inurned with her husband, Ray. The staff of St. Joseph Villa provided kind and thoughtful care during mother’s residence; especially Anwar, Andrew, Katacha, Matilla, Stephan and Symbii Hospice nurse Melinda.

The river communities all had a great observance of Hallowe’en. The Great Pumpkin and Trunk or Treat sponsored

by the Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce was one of the best (and best attended) events in years. Good planning paid off, as there were fewer lines to stand in and something for everyone to enjoy. The Town of Winkelman sponsored a haunted house and other activities at the old barber shop, thanks to the work of local residents. The San Pedro Valley Lions held a Trunk or Treat in Mammoth. On top of all, local residents sponsored Ballin’ for Jovanna, a softball tournament to benefit the family of Jovanna Martinez Calzadillas, who was severely wounded by the Las Vegas killer. A great number of teams, several of them from out of town, came to play. There were two days of softball and raffles and food and music, all taken in by lots of caring people. Well, things will stay busy in our part of the world. On Friday, November 3 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Norman’s IGA in Kearny is sponsoring a free social for retirees. Come to talk. Come to see your friends. Share some of your old pictures of the area. Yes, there will be good refreshments too. The next day, let’s all head to the Hayden/Winkelman Schools auditorium for the CCAB (Copper Communities Action Board) concert that evening. Who knows? You might know

One sign of a healthy community is a healthy, active Chamber of Commerce. The Copper Basin Chamber is sponsoring a membership drive this month, and is seeking businesses and individuals who want a more vital area in which to live. Stop in and see Kelly Towne at the chamber office in the Pinal County Courthouse in Kearny, or speak with current chamber members, especially Ginger Chester, president of the chamber board. The chamber is growing, thanks to the response of so many people. A healthy community displays its health with clean streets, nice yards, and good areas for recreation. In Kearny, a group of volunteers, under the banner of “Journey for a Clean Kearny” has sponsored cleanup days, done plantings around town, and encouraged the painting of some of our public buildings. The young people in the Ray Schools have been involved too. On Wednesday, November 15, at 10 a.m. the clean up group will have a meeting for the express purposes of making plans for future events and for gaining new members of the group. If you care for Kearny and want to help clean it up, please consider attending. And if people from other copper towns want to pick up some ideas, gather some of your friends and come join in. Seeking funding to make long-delayed school infra-structure and equipment improvements, the Ray Uni-fied School District (RUSD) will ask voters for approval to issue bonds up to $3 million total in November. If approved, homeowners could see their property taxes increase by up to $0.615 per $100 assessed valuation, or $49.20 a year on an $80,000 home. “RUSD has so many needs that we need to address, which is why we are seeking the bond issue,” said Su-perintendent Curt Cook. “Many of these needs we have postponed addressing due to the decline of capital funding from the state.” A major need is for funding to expand technical and vocational education at the high school, which voters ap-proved last year. New courses planned by RUSD will cover welding, carpentry, web development and cosmetology. Among other needs cited by Cook include new buses and vans to get students to class, and new security cameras.

The sidewalks and parking lots on school property need repaving, and netting at the elementary school, shredded by recent monsoons, needs to be replaced so students can have lunch outside. RUSD also needs to update its computer equipment (some up to seven years old) used by students, especially with Arizona putting increased emphasis on online testing. “The last time voters approved a RUSD bond issue was in 2001. Some of those funds were used to build a track for competitive track and field events. But so much time as elapsed that the track now needs to be replaced,” Cook said. “I’m sure residents of the district know that RUSD has been conservative with funding over the years and that we have stretched the budget and done more with less revenue than most other districts. But the need to upgrade is overdue,” he added. To inform voters of the issues involved with the bond-ing request, the Pinal County School Superintendent’s Office is preparing an informational pamphlet that will be mailed to households throughout the district. Persons

wishing to submit an argument “for” or “against” the bond issue are asked to send them before August 18 Pinal County School Superintendents Office, 75 N. Bailey St, Florence, AZ 85132. After this pamphlet is mailed, RUSD plans to hold a fo-rum where citizens can learn more about what the district can use the additional revenue, and to help prioritize the projects. The date of the forum is not yet set. The special bond issue election is set for Tuesday, No-vember 7. All voting will be by mail with no polling places accepting ballots.A Little District History In 2014, voters in the Ray Unified School District ap-proved a $330,000 budget override. Taxpayers saw no change to their tax bills with its approval. The measure garnered 643 yes votes to 307 no votes. In 2016, voters approved the district’s membership in the Cobre Valley Institute of Technology (Joint Technological Education District) 914 (yes) to 360 (no). Property taxes received only a minimal increase (5-13¢ for the entire year).

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan for the following restrictions on SR 77 near Mammoth. The $4.3 million, 120-day project is located in Pinal County, north of Mammoth, between mileposts 113 and 120. The work includes milling the existing asphalt and replacing it with new asphalt and a double chip seal coat application. North- and southbound traffic on SR 77 has intermittent shoulder closures from milepost 113 to milepost 120 through April 2018. Southbound traffic on SR 77 has a lane closure from milepost 114 to milepost 116, stop and go traffic (flagging operation) for curb and gutter, sidewalk, and ADA ramps through Nov. 7, 2017. I have so many wonderful memories of the time I had lived in the town of

Hayden, Arizona where I had been born and raised, and of nearby Winkelman and their surrounding areas. Many of those memories were included in my earlier Georgie Digs articles that were started in May of 2010 and had been published in the Copper Basin News. A very close school friend of mine was Ruby Jean Prince, now known as Ruby

Jean Giorsetti who with her sons Jeff and William run their Giorsetti Superior Grocery Store that has been a long-time business in Winkelman. I really enjoyed being with Ruby when we attended several reunions of those who had been students at Hayden High School, and the last one had been held on Oct. 14, 2017 at the Hayden Golf Course. That last one was for those who had been students in the 1940’s/ 1960’s, and I am sure that

Ruby and I were among the oldest. It was fun to visit with those of different ages, and talk about what we remembered. Speaking of remembering, I sometimes can’t remember the names of those I meet and talk to when I am at the post office or Norm’s Hometown Grocery in Kearny, Arizona where I live. We end up laughing after I ask their names , and they tell me they have the same problem. That is just one

Kearny - Kearny Public Library has received a 260-book grant of Juvenile and Young Adult books from Kids Need to Read. Founders, Gary and Tina Mlodzik visited the Kearny library on Monday, Oct. 23, to read to 14 Story Hour kids and present each child with three new books. They also officially presented the books from the

grant to Library Director Janet Danilow. A representative of Kearny Library stated, “The books are all new and superb quality reading and a great addition to our library and we wish to thank the Mlodziks for the books, as well as their organization.” They continued, “Young adults, we get all the latest titles and encourage you to come and try us out.”

The No. 7-ranked Ray football team was eliminated from the state playoffs following

a high-scoring 90 – 58 defeat against No. 2 Bagdad last Saturday night. Seniors Fabian Valenzuela and Nathan Molar combined to rush for 283 yards and five touchdowns in addition to hooking up

for three passing scores. It wasn’t enough though, especially when the opposing quarterback throws for nine touchdowns. The teams combined for 40 points in the first quarter and 48 more in the second.

Senior Dyllin Lopez led the Bearcats’ defense in a game that was anything but defensive. Lopez had two sacks and three tackles in the final game of his high school career. Molar had a team-high nine tackles.

for the Hayden football team its season ended last Saturday with a 73 – 28 loss at No. 1-ranked Mogollon. The Lobos finished with a winning record

in back-to-back seasons and appear headed in the right direction under the leadership of head coach John Estrada. Unfortunately, the Mustangs dashed any

hopes of a Lobos’ upset early on, jumping out to a 32 – 6 lead in the first quarter. Hayden did show some resolve in the third quarter, outscoring the Mustangs 14 – 13.

Donations Sought The Kearny Library needs your help. They are trying to raise money to put an A/C unit in the old teen center. The Library would like to open the teen center on Fridays to the town children for Legos, games and movies. We also plan classes on canning, crochet and other things of interest to the public. It’s fair to say there’s a lot of excitement in Pinal County about all the new roads and freeways in Propositions 416 and 417 on the November 7th ballot.

Better infrastructure means more jobs, both during construction and the new businesses and customers that flock to new roads. That’s why so many Chambers of Commerce support a Yes vote.

Better roads mean better public safety according to Pinal County Attorney Kent Volkmer and Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb. And better roads mean safer roads. That’s critical as I-10 gets worse and fatalities and serious traffic accidents increase everywhere, including several this month.

More freeways lift home values. That’s according to top Arizona real estate expert Jim Belfiore.

But it’s more than fair to ask if the countywide sales tax is raised by one half of one percent to pay for all of these improvements, will the money be spent wisely?

YES! That’s because of new safeguards built into the propositions themselves. Indeed, the plan now before voters was demanded by the people, frustrated with traffic throughout our county. And the people also demanded a seat at the table to see that the money would be spent wisely, if these propositions pass. That’s why a Citizens’ Oversight Committee, to be made up of citizens in incorporated and unincorporated areas, will oversee the decisions and expenditures made by Mayors and Supervisors.

Propositions 416 and 417 are plans by the people, and for the people. And, if passed, the people will be able to hold the politicians accountable.

This is just one more way, and one more reason, to keep Pinal County moving in the right direction.
