In Our Hearts Forever

Mary Esther YanezMom, you meant the world to me. You had my back even when I was wrong. You loved me like I was the last one on earth and all I had to do was hug you in return. You were My Mom and I, I was your baby. I love you.Love, Justin

I hope it’s true that a year on earth is like a minute in heaven. If so, you’ll see me in about an hour. Meanwhile while we’re here please watch over us. Help us to be strong, guide us in the right direction, and remind us to be grateful. ank you for teaching me to be my own person, to follow my heart, to reinvent myself anytime I feel the need, and to dive into the future without fear.  Love You Always, Jennifer.

Sister, ve hearts ache for the sound of your voice and the feel of your touch.   e touch only a Big Sister can give. We loved, laughed, shared and cried together as six sisters and now we are left to learn to live without you. Five sisters remain that will carry your love and memory in our hearts for the rest of our lives so you see we will always be together.  We miss you sister Esther....Go play, go laugh, walk, and run but most importantly go Dance in the Kingdom of Heaven. Share with the Angels your beautiful talents and the creative art that you have shared with us. We love you Sissy!

Our sister was always expressing her gratitude to the Hayden/Winkelman community for their continued support and prayers throughout her illness and we thank you. We would like to share our sister’s own words written in a letter to our Mother … ”I am so very thankful to Saint Joseph’s Community who love my Mom and Dad so much, and to the Parishioners who have prayed for me.  Mom I feel the prayers of the People so much!”

Keeping the Spirit of the Cleanup Day AliveSeveral Kearnyites have mentioned to that, since the town cleanup day in January, many people have continued the spirit of the day by working on their yards, maybe doing a bit of painting and fix-up, and others have gone all out and are re-landscaping their yards. As I drive around, I see that it is true. I know of at least one realtor who took time to work with people who are selling their houses to make them “curb pleasing.” I also had a query

about some residents who have two of the big town garbage cans, and who put two out at a time on garbage day. I explored this. I found out that a few years ago the town had several beat-up cans which were offered to people for back yard containers. Yes, sometimes two cans are put out and emptied. However, when this is done a record is kept of it, and people are billed extra for the landfill cost. No one is taking advantage of the system.

This is well and good. I have a deep concern, however, that I want to share with you. It’s our town swimming pool. For years it has operated pretty much on donations and swimming fees. It has been cleaned, patched, painted, re-fixed and patched again many times. Individual citizens, ASARCO, Resolution, and other mines have contributed time and money. But the pool got to a point where the fiberglass lining was separating

from the concrete form, and the edge of the pool was crumbling. With a grant from Resolution Mine, we removed the surface in November. The condition of the concrete, thankfully, is sound. But the town doesn’t have the money to put the pool back together. The Town Council has approved spending the money if we acquire it, but we have heard nothing from the several places where we applied for grants. Our Town Manager, Anna Flores, has contacted many places seeking donations, and has had some success. She is also developing a network of people who would like to use “crowd sourcing” to raise money for the pool. The network includes many former residents of Kearny. This is a lot of work, and there are many uncertainties. I am concerned that the pool

may be opened late, or not even opened at all, this summer. I ask all citizens to respond as able once we are able to pull things more together, and when I know more I will tell you more. On another subject close to my heart, the town is meeting this week with Ken Hall of Central Arizona Governments to

lay the foundations for making our ten-year plan, a document required by Arizona law before we can apply for state and federal grants. I want to thank everyone who responded to our request for financial information so we can figure out Kearny’s financial future relative to other towns in Arizona. I have to report, however, that so far we do not have enough responses to make up a valid study. Again, I will say more about this later. All mining towns in Arizona are having a difficult time right now. I tell you this, though, that I think Kearny has the prospects for a happier future. I’m glad to be your mayor.

The win was the fourth-straight for the seventh-ranked Bearcats. “At the end of the game I felt good,” Yocum said after picking up his fourth win of the year. “I was fighting during the first five innings of game, but my team kept me going and I just kept firing.” The senior right-hander, who was named the Ray Booster Club Player of the Week for his efforts, pitched his second complete-game of year and allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits with five strikeouts. He threw over 100 pitches in the game, the most so far this season. “His pitch count has been less than 50 during the first part of this season,” Bearcats’ head coach Rene Pacheco said about his ace. “We’re just trying to keep him fresh and hopefully he can help us make a deep run into the playoffs.” Pacheco added, “As the game went on I thought he got a little stronger.” The Cats started fast, scoring four runs in the first. The

first two came on a two-RBI triple by shortstop Derek Pacheco, which scored Cole Yocum and Douglas McPeak, who walked and singled, respectively, to start the game. Pacheco later scored the third run of the inning before Yocum, who batted twice in the first, scored the final run of the inning. “I think we set the tempo of the game in our first at-bat,” Rene Pacheco said. “We had them on their heels (early) and they were pretty much chasing the rest of the game.” Already leading 4 – 2 heading into the top the seventh, the Bearcats added an insurance run to increase their lead to 5 – 2. Derek Pacheco’s leadoff single was followed by Cole Yocum’s walk and a fielder’s choice off the bat of Seth Harmon. An RBI double by Robbin Newman followed, driving in Pacheco with the game’s final run. After starting the year 1 – 5 – 1, the Bearcats are now 8 – 6 – 1 after winning seven of their last eight games. Despite playing perhaps the best they have all season, there is still room for improvement, according to the Cats’ head coach. “If our pitching can figure some things out and we can polish up defensively, I think we’re capable of getting better,” Rene Pacheco said. “We talk about (that) every game and trying to peak at the right time.”

The Ray Jr. High baseball team entered last Wednesday’s game versus rival Hayden with a record of 3 –1, the lone loss coming against Globe after three-straight victories to start the season. The Jr. Bearcats won their fourth game of the season, defeating Hayden at home, 20 – 2. The Jr. Cats, now 4 – 1, are off to a surprising start so far in 2015. “After last years undefeated season, we returned 6 players and 4 of them were starters,” Jr. Bearcats’ head coach Frank Lechuga said. “This has been a challenging season so far after losing our main core of players from last year and bringing in 11 new players to the team.” Lechuga credits assistant coaches Shane Olsen and Shawn Walters with helping him keep the players’ attention while maintaining a good work ethic and a fun

atmosphere. It’s obviously working, as the team’s record indicates. In their most recent win, the Jr. Cats scored early and often, beginning with a four-run first inning. Doubles from leadoff hitter Jayden Lagunas and Skylar Hughes sandwiched walks by Anthony Lopez and Tyler Goodwin, helping the Jr. Cats grab the early lead. Goodwin, who was the starting pitcher for Ray, pitched around trouble in the second inning after striking out two Lobos’ hitters in the first. He allowed a run before his defense made a play with the bases loaded to prevent any more runs from scoring. The Jr. Cats put the game out of reach in the third, scoring 13 runs, highlighted by two hits in the inning from

both Jando Felix and Julian Becerra. Six other Jr. Cats added singles while Danny Garcia and Anthony Lopez came through with run-scoring doubles. The Lobos were able to plate another run before Jr. Cats’ closer Anthony Lopez came on in relief and recorded two strikeouts. Catcher Morgan Bray threw out a Lobos’ runner caught in a rundown for the final out of the game. “After a tough loss and a two week break, this game is what the Bearcats needed,” Lechuga said after the game. “The offense came out and showed a lot of patience while being aggressive at the plate, but we still need to improve on the defensive side and eliminate the mental errors.” Upcoming schedule: Apr. 7 at San Manuel and Apr. 15 at San Carlos.

Ray Jr. Bearcats post fourth win on the season, 20-2 over Hayden

With spring now here, no one could ask for a more beautiful day to have two rival schools play a game of softball. The Lady Lobos of Hayden showed up with a young squad to face off against the more experienced Bearcat softball team. Right from the start the experienced Bearcat softball team showed they meant business. The Bearcat defense retired the first three batters the Lobo’s sent to the plate, three up, three down. Facing a young pitcher, the Bearcat batting lineup was able to send nine batters to the plate, with six of them crossing the plate, led by a

Julie Meza triple and Tara Lorona single. In the second inning, the Lobo lineup was able to send four batters to the plate led by an Ahleah Arbizo single. The Bearcats second attempt at batting resulted in five runs scored led by a Julianna Hong single and an Amee Kenyon double. The Lady Lobos sent three batters in the third inning to the plate, three up three down. The Bearcats third attempt at bat resulted in four more runs scored led by a Daniella Hinojos double and Shelby Yocum home run. The fourth inning Bearcat

softball was able to introduce a new player into the pitching rotation, Amee Kenyon, which led to a little shuffling around on the defensive front. The Lobos with the heart of their lineup at bat were able to send four batters to the plate, but the Bearcat defense was there to back up their new pitcher resulting in no runs scored. In the bottom of the fourth inning the Bearcat batters scored five more runs, led by a Julianna Hong single and Shelby Yocum home run.

One famous Cinderella sang, “A dream is a wish your heart makes.” And many local ladies last weekend took steps to make their dreams and wishes a reality right on the stage at the Ray High School Auditorium. The second annual Cinderella Pageant was held on Saturday, March 28. The proud parents, grandparents and other attendees enjoyed the entertainment from the young performers and the modeling show they worked hard to present to the public. The young ladies performed as singers, gymnastics and graceful models with the movements they showed off during the Cinderella Pageant. The young ladies who participated in the pageant had several practice events before the actual program this past Saturday. The Pinal County Cinderella Scholarship Program (CSP) is a non-profit organization focused on developing self-esteem, confidence and pride in the young ladies who come and “Dare to Dream”. The Cinderella program is divided into five age divisions: Cinderella Tot (3-6 years); Miniature Miss (7-9 years); Cinderella Miss (10-12 years); Cinderella Teen (13-17 years), and, Cinderella Woman (18-26 years, married or single). This year, three new Cinderella Baby divisions were added to the program: Cinderella Infant (0-11 months), Cinderella Baby (12-23

months), and Cinderella Tiny Tot (24-35 months). The Cinderella Pageant looks forward to seeing more entries in these age groups in the upcoming year. Participants in all age divisions are judged on poise and personality, while modeling sportswear and party wear. The older four divisions are also judged on talent presentations. Cinderella Tots are judged on an on-stage interview called “Tot Personality”. The judges, who have an opportunity to evaluate

their poise, confidence, grooming, and communication skills up-close, also interview all age divisions. The Overall Cinderella Winners, Cinderella Girls, Talent/Tot Personality and Photogenic winners are eligible to attend the 2015 Arizona State Finals, in Tucson, in June. This year’s Cinderella Pageant winners are: Ella Magee, Faith Bracamonte, Madelyn Shirley, Ariza Castillo and Isabella Wernett. Every participant won a

trophy and tiara. The Pinal County Cinderella Delegation Community Service and Events will have the opportunity to participate in many of the upcoming local events such as: Easter Celebration, Cinderella State Finals, Fourth of July Parade, Back to School Drive, Homecoming, Octoberfest and Trunk or Treat. Thank you Dolores Baez and Gloria Beltran for the hard work you put forth helping the youth in our community.

JUNIOR LADY CATSContinued from Page 9

By Andrew LuberdaCopper Basin News

The fourth-ranked Ray softball team remained undefeated in sectional play after last Tuesday’s 18 – 0 lopsided win at Ft. Thomas. The Lady Cats scored at least three runs in each of the first four innings, including eight in the first, to improve to 4 – 0 in Section VI. Stormee Galka and Savannah Willis each had four hits, accounting for half of the Lady Cats’ 16 hits in the game, which included a homerun by Galka and doubles by Willis and Elisa Rodriguez. Galka, Willis, Rodriguez, and Gabbi Montano, who had three hits, each had two RBI in the victory. Galka and Nepeese Avechuco pitched four shutout innings combined, limiting the Apaches to only one hit while striking out nine. The win kept the Lady Cats in a first-place tie in the section with top-ranked San Manuel. Those two teams will play each other last this week (Friday) at San Manuel, featuring two teams who are among the top state title contenders. Friday’s game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
