LÜNEN IS ...
Otherworldly good. Right around the corner. Colorful and vibrant. Bike-friendly. Good for the heart. Good for the future.
People from Lünen are able to describe their hometown in such vivid ways because
Lünen unites—the town with the river, artists with miners, the Ruhr Valley with the
Münsterland, industry with the future.
Lünen unites the best of all worlds. Come see for yourself.
There are more than enough reasons.
We warmly welcome you to visit us in Lünen!
DISCOVER.
4 | 5 Intersection of the Ruhr Metropolis and the Münsterland
Lünen brings things—and people—together.
Everything is nearby, including the 14 city districts.
Make a quick trip into town to go to the market,
to saunter, to go to school or to the doctor. In
summer, linger a little longer to eat ice cream
in the “Flusspark”.
Lünen has much to offer. Exemplary medical care,
diverse educational offerings, services for young
and old. The extensive network of bicycle paths
helped Lünen earn recognition as a “bicycle-
friendly city.”
Even good old St. Nick enjoys coming to Lünen—
by boat on the Lippe, an annual highlight for young
and old alike. He docks in the middle of town, at
the stepped cascade of the Lippe, and continues
his journey by sleigh into the center of town.
Lünen is accessible from all directions and with all
means of transportation. Whether by federal roads
or the A2 or A1 highways—or by the Datteln-Hamm
Canal, by rail, or by air—Lünen is easy to reach and
easy to depart. But you’ll want to come back.

“Going with the flow” is a way of life in Lünen.
Whether living on the banks of the Lippe, strolling
through the “Preußenhafen”, taking a bike tour
along the Seseke, or relaxing in “Seepark Lünen” or
at Cappenberger Lake, there are countless opportu-
nities for excursions to, in, or on the water.
Lünen is green. There’s always something new
to discover in the forests, parks, and countryside
that surround Lünen. One such experience is the
“Lüner Lippeaue” path, a 17-kilometer route with
16 stations. Biking and hiking is just as popular as
simple walking. And you’ll never get lost because
the well-marked and barrier-free path is rarely far
from the center of town.
There’s also lots going on in the air, especially
above the glider airfield in the autumn. But it isn’t
gliders circling above, but rather the colorful and
fanciful kites of kite flyers from all over the world
at one of Europe’s most popular kite festivals.

“Lüner Hansetuch”.
Every year in November, thousands of film fans
head to the “Lünen Film Festival” for a four-day
celebration of new German films. Both famous
and up-and-coming filmmakers compete for the
coveted audience prize.
Lünen is multicultural. People of different cultures
and backgrounds influence the life of the town
with art, culture, and tradition as well as with music
festivals and countless exhibits. The “Heinz Hilpert
Theater” alone offers more than 100 days of events
per year.
Lünen is proud of its “Hansetuch,” a singular col-
lection of paintings from international Hanseatic
cities. The gallery had long been planned before
it opened with 40 paintings during the anniversary
year 2016.
And Lünen also has a castle. “Schwansbell” Castle
belongs to the youngest noble houses in Westphalia.
A former agricultural building on the castle grounds
houses the Lünen Municipal Museum, which invites
visitors into the daily lives of farmers and workers
of the 19th and 20th centuries.

People in Lünen are dedicated volunteers and
help others. Statistically, half of the population is
involved with a society or an institution. In gratitude,
Lünen launched the “Volunteer Card”, which offers
much-appreciated discounts to those who donate
their time. Moreover, the annual “Volunteer Prize”
recognizes one especially generous individual.
Those in Lünen are open, social, and adventurous.
The city gets a lot up and running, from the “Brunnen-
festival” to the “Lünsche Mess,” from the “Jazz Light
Festival” to the “Film Festival”. Many of these events
are known nationwide. And new events are added
every year.
Clubs and groups come in all shapes and sizes,
from sports, shooting, and Carnival associations
to dog competitions and hobbies and crafts. Well
over 100 in all. Squires and shooters defend their
traditions, sometimes quite literally as with the
local hunters who have become champions in
regional shooting competitions.

Lünen was built on coal and steel. Today, Lünen is
focused on other valuables. The city is an important
location for recycling, the circular economy, and the
securing of resources. Aurubis and Remondis are
headquartered here and are among the largest
employers of the city. Additional companies from
diverse fields offer numerous training and employ-
ment opportunities, securing both their futures and
the futures of the people in Lünen.
The dawn of a new era is symbolized by the “Colani
UFO” in the “LÜNTEC” Technology Center. The futuristic
redesign of a dormant shaft tower, conceived by
designer Luigi Colani, is used as an inventive busi-
ness lounge. The 360-degree panoramic view atop
the 37-meter structure inspires everyone, including
members of the start-ups in the neighboring tech-
nology center.
The Aurubis plant in Lünen was founded in 1926
as a recycling facility for residues containing copper
and precious metals. Today, over 100 years later,
it is the world’s largest copper recycling smelter
and the recycling center of Aurubis AG. Annually,
up to 500,000 tons of secondary raw materials are
Europe’s largest center for industrial recycling is
located in Lünen. Approximately 1.4 million waste
and recycling materials are converted into 0.8 mil-
lion products and raw materials at the REMONDIS
facility in Lünen. Industrial intermediates are pro-
duced from industrial and household waste. Waste
materials are converted into fuel, and biomass is
processed into sources of energy.
In 2016 the state of North Rhine-Westphalia com-
mended the REMONDIS facility in Lünen as a pioneer
for climate protection, describing the facility as
“modern, innovative, and future oriented.” The plant
annually saves 466,000 tons of CO2 through targeted
material flow management.
Every day 1,400 employees at the facility work to
strengthen the region and improve the environment.
The REMONDIS Group stands for high standards of
quality in the areas of recycling, service and water,
perfect infrastructures, and complete performance
processed into 200,000 tons of copper cathode and
precious metals such as lead, nickel, tin, and zinc.
“In the city, for the city” is the motto of the company,
because “we are a part of the city and its popula-
tion.” Aurubis lovingly calls its furnace the “Downtown
Smelter.” Of the approximately 240 million euros
that the corporation invested in the recycling facili-
ties, a good half flowed into measures that protect
the environment.
The work of a highly motivated workforce adheres
to the highest quality and environmental standards
and has resulted in the Lünen plant becoming an
important player in resource conservation and the
circular economy.
Aurubis trains and encourages the up-and-coming:
more than 40 apprentices and over 120 employees
who have successfully completed training at the plant
are today part of the approximately 600 people
working at the location. Among them are about
70 people with severe disabilities.

chains. With years of experience, REMONDIS oper-
ates as a family business that is rich in tradition,
one that continually works to improve circulation
in order to ensure the supply of raw materials in
the future.

The glass processing plant in Lünen, founded in 1907, is today part of the internation-
ally active Ardagh Group. Whether jars for fruit, vegetables, jam, or other delicacies,
around 590 million glass containers are produced in the plant each year. Most of the
raw materials and the recycled glass used in its production come from the region,
thus shortening the transportation routes and being mindful of the environment.
The high percentage of recycled glass guarantees a responsible consideration of
valuable resources. On average, glass containers from Lünen contain 60 percent
recycled glass.

It took just a few years for the internationally active Grass AF recycling company to
develop into a successful and prestigious expert in metal and electronic recycling.
Since its founding in 2013, the company has expanded. The volume of metals now
exceeds 30,000 tons per year and is still increasing. The certified recycling company
has a team with over 15 years of experience. The company, guided by a feeling of
responsibility for the environment and a clear alignment with the future, consciously
chose to locate in Lünen. Outstanding transportation connections offer perfect con-
ditions for modern processes and logistics, creating a strong foundation for a com-
pany with global ambitions.

Industrial processing, the removal of streets and abandoned buildings, and the
burning of waste create mineral debris. The MAV Mineral Conditioning and Utilization
Lünen GmbH is a specialist in reclaiming valuable raw materials from formerly pro-
cessed materials. These recycled materials are used for earth work, road building,
and the erection of noise barriers.

The Ruhrglas Recycling GmbH & Co. KG in Lünen has been a subsidiary of the Reiling
Consortium since 2005. The internationally active Germany-based family company
is a national leader in the recycling of glass containers, sheet glass, and mixed glass.
With modern techniques and sophisticated services, 52 employees are engaged at
the Lünen plant. They process glass from both Germany and abroad for glassworks.
