Often times the feeling one gets as the finale to the year creeps slowly, painfully, agonisingly closer, is probably not too dissimilar from the torment a golfer playing out of that bunker at St. Andrews’

17th hole might be experiencing. So close, yet so annoyingly far – and still so much to do.

Still, even if you feel as though a Mexican wrestler has repeatedly body-slammed you, and you can’t wait for that tiny year-end break, I hope that 2013 has been a successful and encouraging time for you, personally and professionally.

The team at The Els Club Copperleaf can certainly crawl out of the bunker, or ring, with a sense of pride and accomplishment. It has been a year of great achievement and triumph. The Els Club hosted the inaugural Tshwane Open, a co-sanctioned

international event; which saw a record number of world renowned golfers teeing up in anticipation of conquering the glorious Ernie Els signature course.

For the Copperleaf property sales team, the recession receded enough to allow for a fantastic level of new sales, and it’s encouraging to see the number of new homes being completed on the estate. The ‘village’ is taking shape, and we’d like to welcome all of the new residents and families who have become part of the Copperleaf dream. At the centre of the Copperleaf growth is the Clubhouse – a sort of town square, buzzing with people and business at the Café, Spa, Gym, Golf Shop, Pavilion and new Crèche.

In this issue of the Copperleaf MGZN, besides some interesting lifestyle stories, we’ve included news from each of the portfolios at The Els Club Copperleaf. Our golfers and amateur ‘green keepers’ will be interested

to read about the upgrades to the course’s bunkers; while those who are not too fussed about the sandpits may find the stories and recipes from our Spa and Café more stimulating. Don’t miss our feature story – Space and Time – a focus on the Strydom family’s new life at Copperleaf Estate.

Have you heard about a new golf business venture that’s taking the corporate golf world by storm? It’s called Hickory Golf, and a franchise has been launched in South Africa. Notion Golf will ensure that you are able to participant in an experience that’ll take you back to an era of wooden drivers and putters, while wearing scratchy woollen shirts and knickerbockers. It really gives all the participants an amazing walk back in history.

One thing that dealing with Ernie Els and his team of professionals has taught us at The Els Club Copperleaf, is that you don’t need Hickory Golf to experience the

phenomenon of sportsmanship that still lives on in the modern era of the game.

If you haven’t yet experienced the tradition of excellence and distinction at The Els Club Copperleaf, then I encourage you to pay us a visit. We promise to put our Mexican wrestlers away.

Happy reading and happy holidays. We wish you, and yours, a truly memorable and blessed Festive Season.

P ringle of Scotland has been in the fashion industry since 1815, and recently launched its first kids clothing range.

To our benefit and good-fortune, PRINGLE has chosen South Africa to showcase this flagship brand and in which to pioneer with this new venture. With their classy, timeless and distinct design, an entirely new clothing collection has been launched that keeps up with Pringle’s reputation and consolidated name in the world of fashion. Visit the Golf Shop at Copperleaf to see the new range.

T here aren’t many companies that make a CSI decision out of conviction and personal experience anymore, so we are excited that VAN DER BANK JEWELLERS inCenturion, have expanded their product, ‘Symphony of Colour.’ The range makes use of

diamonds and semi-precious stones in exclusive and unique designs. The product initiative was designed to honour the memory of the founder of the popular Centurion jewellery boutique, Andre van der Bank. Andre was in the jewellery design and manufacturing trade for more than 40 year before he tragically lost his battle against cancer in 2010. With the collection, they hope to make an ongoing contribution to Hospice to show their appreciation for the huge difference they made during the last six months of Andre’s life. The Els for Autism Golf Challenge has raised $6.5 million for autism thanks to over 5,000 rounds of golf and over 15,000 donors pledging funds since its inaugural 2011 series. With 2013

being the most successful year to date with nearly $2.5million raised this year alone. The Golf Challenge, an international, season long, amateur golf series comprising of 20+ events across the U.S., Canada between April-September, hosted its 2013 Grand Finale in Las Vegas on 13-14 October. Funds raised from the Golf Challenge go towards the creation of a virtual and physical Els Centre of Excellence in Jupiter, FL, scheduled to break ground in Spring 2014. The Centre will provide a uniquely designed educational program for children on the AUTISM spectrum ages 3-21, as well as a physical hub for a multi-faceted global outreach program that will make therapeutic best practices available to children on the autism spectrum; both in the U.S. and internationally.See more at: www.ernieels.com/els_for_autism

C ool under pressure, Dawie Van Der Walt claimed the biggest victory of his career as he bravely held off compatriots Darren Fichardt and Louis De Jager

to win the inaugural TSHWANE OPEN.at the Els Club at Copperleaf. The 30 year old, whose only previous victories as a professional came on satellite tours in America, finished with a five under par 67 to finish with a 21 under par total; two ahead of Africa Open winner Fichardt.“You can only imagine what it’s like to win such a big one,” said Van Der Walt. "I’m just really happy that I played well and won, because you can play well and not win. "You start doubting yourself and at 30 years old you start to wonder if you’re good enough and this shows me that I am. I would have liked to win before 30, but I’ll definitely take this. Van Der Walt made it a three-way tie for the lead when he became only the fourth player in the week to eagle the par-5 Fourth.Fichardt birdied the fifth to go back in front, but Van Der Walt stole a march when he picked up shots at the next two to lead by one at the turn.Despite missing the fairway at the last, Van Der Walt managed three closing pars and that proved good enough as Fichardt – who did not deviate from par over the last 13 holes – struggled to make the required birdies to apply some pressure.

T he Els Club at Copperleaf has done it again! The successful hosting of the Tshwane Open cemented the clubs place as the home of the tournament in

2014 as well. The dates for the competition, co-sanctioned by the European Tour and the Sunshine Tour, is currently being finalised for the first-quarter of the new year. The Tshwane Open was the first of three new events on The EUROPEAN TOUR International schedule for 2013. The other two were the Russia Masters and the Turkish Open.It was also the sixth European Tour event to be jointly-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour for the 2013 schedule - a new record between the two Tours for a single season. The Els Club at the Copperleaf Golf & Country Estate is the first European Tour venue where the course has been designed by Ernie Els. At 7,791 yards, it is the longest South African course to be used for a European Tour event. This beats the 7,761 yards at the Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate, which was used for the last two editions of the SA Open Championship. The 685 yard par five fourth hole went into the record books as the longest hole played on The European Tour, and the venue was the first European Tour course to have three par fives all measuring over 600 yards in length.Visit the Copperleaf Estate website for regular updates on the 2014 Tshwane Open, and if you haven't yet experienced the course for yourself, make an online booking at www.copper-leaf.co.za.

If ever there was a success story in the South African residential property market, then the turn-around of the Copperleaf Estate has to rank right up there with the best. With the backing and

support of the developer, Investec Property, Copperleaf has become the undisputed estate of choice in Gauteng.

The estate is situated in the heart of Gauteng, yet far enough away from the bustle of urban life. The secure, tranquil country setting and farm style architectural guidelines offer an unparalleled standard of living. It’s just 20 minutes away from Centurion and only 25 minutes from Sandton.

The developer has created an environment that lends itself to family living. This is the place where you dream of raising your children, where you're able to spend time with your family in the open parklands and superb facilities, or perfect your game of golf at The Els Club at Copperleaf.

But how has Copperleaf reached such a sales milestone at a time when other developments are struggling? "Investec Property believed

in the development. And Ernie Els believed in the Els Club development and potential," says Property Sales Manager, Peter Ash. "And so they committed themselves to providing unrivalled packages and facilities. The developer also took a decision to build a number of turnkey homes, which were sold out in record time."

Sales have grown exponentially over the last 3 years. and Copperleaf sales are nearing 80% - that's 200 sales in 2013 alone. Currently there are 150 homes that have been completed, with an additional 70 houses under construction - and many more plans have now been approved by the Architectural Committee.

The construction of the Forest Hill Mall (May 2014) a mere 5km from the main gate will continue to add incentive to sales.

Prices for stands start at R525,000, while prime 1200m² stands on the gold course, are available from R995,000.

The Copperleaf Estate Sales Office is open seven days a week between 9am and 5pm and can be contacted on 012 668 8950.

Time is relative in the Strydom household at Copperleaf Estate. "Ja! Relatively amazing!" blurts Magda. Vian and Magda welcome us into their brand new west-facing home. It's late in the

afternoon, but the setting sun is still blasting it's glorious heat over the neat plunge pool and through the large patio doors. "Make yourself at home. We're a very relaxed and chilled family," says Vian.

The atmosphere is certainly 'rustig', and Vian explains why. He is a Tax Specialist with KPMG, and Magda is an Accountant for Copperleaf Estate. They have two children, both girls - Lune, 4 years old, and Amelie, 16-months. "We used to stay in Midrand. It was such a fast-paced environment, so noisy and crowded. We were starting to feel claustraphobic and tense. It affected our work, our relationship and our children."

The opportunity to buy and build at Copperleaf presented itself, and the family has now lived in the estate for two months."The building was quite stressful. And there's still lots of work to do, but we're very happy here," explains Magda. I assume that the building went according to budget, seeing as how both of them are 'numbers people'!

"What! laughs Vian. "Never. You know how that saying goes that the Dominee's children are the naughtiest, or the Plumber's toilet never works? That's how it is for us. And Magda loves to spend money." Magda grins, amused.

Magda and Vian met at varsity. "I had to do the chasing," Magda smirks. "We share the same interests, and the same vision for our children."

By now the girls have walked out onto the lawn in front of the house. We follow them, and I'm struck by the peace and contentment of the whole family. One only has to spend a short time at Copperleaf to understand the feeling of space and time that the estate has to offer.

Lune is curious about the mushrooms growing in the grass and sets about 'helping' her Mamma to remove them. Little Amelie, meanwhile, glides around the edge of the garden, exploring the plants and the stones. There's nothing better than the space to move around, and the love of caring parents.

I ask the family to name some of their favourite things of the estate. Magda is quick to mention the Copperleaf Cafe. "It's a mom's best friend. We can wander down for a light meal or a pizza, and the children enjoy the playground." Magda also enjoys the fact that they can run or cycle on well-maintained paths and roads around the estate. "We also walk down the the dams to enjoy the birdlife and the views."

"Golf is definately a plus," adds Vian. He has an audience everytime he walks past their house on the course. "But my favourite part is hearing the jackals howling each night.

It's an eery but wonderful sound. We're actually very privileged to be living in such a beautiful estate."

When the Strydoms aren't at home, they spend their holidays in KZN and the Cape - especially the West Coast. "Though being at home nowadays is also like a holiday. We're enjoying the open spaces, the nature, the birds, the cleaner air and the amenities," says Magda.

What about shops and schools? "It's true that Copperleaf is not that close to shops and schools," adds Vian, "But when you start doing the school run and driving to the shops, you realise that it's not that far. And actually, who needs the shops to distract us, when we have all of this at home. We just plan better when visiting the shops." He points toward the green horizon.

Copperleaf Estate is a secure and well-managed upmarket residential and golf development. It was bought by Investec Property and has broken numerous property sales records. Magda and Vian were able to secure their property through a resale purchase.

The little princesses disappear into a stunning pink wendy house. Soon it will be bath time and the bedtime routine - but until then, they have all the space and time in the world - relatively, amazingly speaking, that is.

Lune & Amelie were dressed by Pringle for Kids. Available at the Golf Shop at Copperleaf Estate.

“Life in Midrand was claustraphobic and noisy. It

affected our work, relationship and children.”

“The Copperleaf Cafe is a mom's best friend.

We enjoy the light meals and pizza.”

Y ou've heard that chemical peeling is a dermatological method for gradually removing one or more skin layers using chemical substances. Now it's time to hear about Phytopeeling - a revolution in chemical peeling that also involves cellular rejuvenation. The Copperleaf

Spa has introduced a new range of skin care products from Juliette Armand, and the Apocalypsis Therapy is already proving to be one of the most popular treatments.

Harnassing the power of your own cells, Apocalypsis Therapy is a medium chemical peeling therapy and a rapid skin cell rejuvenation therapy at the same time. It is based on the combined exfoliation-rejuvenation effects of Spongilla which multiplies the efficacy of your intervention to wrinkles, dyschromias, scars and spots.

Treatment results are established and superior to any other method in terms of combined action and safety.

Latest studies performed by American scientists prove that skin cancer occurrence is reduced by 80% in people who regularly use medium depth peeling.

The Spa has also introduced the new Chronos , Opsis and Caviar Therapies by Juliette Armand. The new treatments were created in Armand's advanced laboratories in Greece, and they are based on high-end, innovatiive and diversified formulas, enriched with active ingredients that enhance the results and protect the skin.

Chronos Therapy is based on bio-technology which uses four systems in four different dimensions to address the lack of water, biological aging and oxidant damage in skin.

Opsis Therapy, a skin booster, is enhanced with new complexes with targeted actions to address wrinkles, dark circles, swellings and irritation in the sensitive eye contour areas.

The Caviar Therapy combines black and red caviar with grape polyphenols, argan oil, aloe, chromocare and shea butter for total skin reconstruction and glow.

For advice on how these new Juliette Armand therapies and products can become a part of your own beauty and spa lifestyle, why not meet with the professionals at Copperleaf Spa to discuss your options?

BUNKER PROGRAMME · HOW IT WORKS

Page 25: Copperleaf MGZN

“It would be fair to say that more money

is spent on bunker maintenance than

green maintenance on a 21st century golf

course."

G olf Course Architect, Ian Tittershill says that the first lesson he learned in golf construction is that drainage is the key to a good course. This is never more important than in the design and construction of bunkers.

Bunker construction and lining is extremely important in both construction and maintenance of the modern course. Bunkers account for less than two per cent of the playing area on a typical golf course, yet account for over 25 per cent of maintenance costs. It would be fair to say that more money is spent on bunker maintenance than green maintenance on a 21st century golf course.

The lack of good drainage in bunkers on some of the most famous golf courses is still commonplace. Of course there are many issues to consider when designing or building bunkers: location, shape, size, slope, definition, relevance and last but most important, maintenance. But drainage remains paramount. Drainage is the fundamental key to a bunker working, the key to maintaining it and the key to performance.

"I recently visited a prestigious golf course in Brazil, Fazenda da Grama," says Tittershill. "It is possibly one of the most beautiful courses I have been to and is cared for and maintained in a detailed and sympathetic manner. However, the greatest challenge the greenkeeper has is bunker maintenance. In the rainy season, the course will be hit with rain every day – between two and four inches each day for over two months. Every single rain event will washout and contaminate all 90 bunkers."

The course at The Els Club Copperleaf suffers the same sand 'hazards' as many championship courses around the world. So recently, the club employed the services of leading South African course maintenance company, Southern Turf Management, to begin a bunker refurbishment program. The programme will strech over a number of months, with key a focus on selected holes first.

"We're aiming for consistency," says Head Professional, Jaun Gayser. "If we can guarantee the kind of bunker consistency that professionals are demanding, whether it's a on hot blustery day, or we have had a heavy highveld downpour, then we'll be very happy. We want to avoid any contamination, and still be sure that the slopes maintain their sand levels."

For information on the bunker programme, and how it may affect your round at Copperleaf, please contact the bookings office.

"The confidence that the European and Sunshine Tours have in our abilities to host world-class tournaments, has spurred us on to examine each and every part of the course to ensure that we inprove on, and exceed, the standards required by modern golf - even down to those pesky Sand Traps!"

New sand is installed into the bunkers and compacted to a

depth of 100mm.The sand chosen for the Copperleaf bunkers is a

lot coarser than previous products, and will definitely make for a better surface to

play out of.

ny time is a good time to relax, eat, drink and shop at the Copperleaf Cafe. But Summer

Time? Now that's the best time! Ciara M'Crystal is responsible for

ensuring that the restaurants and entertainment decks at Copperleaf

run smoothly. And she's done a superb job. We asked Ciara, and StyleUnited blogger, Karen Walrond to list

some of their favourite things about summer. Here it is:

1. Longer Days. It’s almost like the weather is making up for forcing us all indoors all winter by keeping the warm weather sun out longer during the summer. With all the sports and vacations and get-togethers we have planned, we’re going to need those extra daylight hours.

2. Beaches, Lakes and Other Large Bodies of Water. There’s a reason people love baths: Submerging your body entirely in water to the point of weightlessness feels therapeutic. Besides, whether your pleasure is the ocean, a river or the city pool, there’s nothing quite like cooling off in a large body of water on a hot day.

3. Drinks With Umbrellas. Sticking an umbrella in an ice-cold drink just feels like an instant vacation. Add a maraschino cherry or a slice of pineapple, and you’re practically in the tropics.

4. Cotton and Linen. It’s finally time to throw off those heavy coats and sweaters: Pulling out cotton tees, linen dresses and madras shorts

MGZ

N

30

can make you feel instantly lighter on your feet.5. All Those Awesome Fruits and Vegetables. Peaches. And berries.

And watermelon. Farmers markets teeming with vibrant produce. Summer is the season for sweet or savory salads, and, thankfully, variety is everywhere.

6. Eating Outdoors. Speaking of awesome fruits and vegetables, now’s the time when they taste best while sitting outdoors. So plan a big picnic on the beach or a backyard braai .

7. Ice Cream. Sure, you could eat ice cream at any time of the year, but somehow it isn’t as satisfying as when you have a triple scoop cone on a hot summer day. Bonus points if the ice cream is purchased from the back of a truck that makes music as it slowly cruises down your neighborhood street.

8. Outdoor Movies and Festivals. We’re not the only ones who take advantage of the long days and warmer weather: A plethora of movie and music festivals are all over it as well. This form of entertainment becomes scarcer during cooler weather, so enjoy it while it lasts.

9. Patios With Sparkly Lights. Those lazy summer evenings with the sun dipping over the horizon well after dinner just make evenings more luxurious. What better way to partake in the fading light than while on a patio accompanied by the perfect ambiance: twinkle lights everywhere - at Copperleaf!

Copperleaf Crèche is a much needed additional service offered by Copperleaf Estate. The Crèche opened on the 4th of February 2013 and is open to all estate residents and visitors from outside the estate who would like to enrol their kids. It caters for babies from

the ages of 3 months to kids 5 years old. The Crèche also has ample space for outside play activities and

offers dedicated play areas for supervised activities. School Head, Olivia Erasmus emphasises that the Crèche is a home from home where ALL kids must feel loved, cared for and stimulated by the various learning activities. The environment is managed in such a way that the kids can express themselves fully in all activities. She believes that the learning experience must be a fun and exciting process with lots of stimulating activities. focussing on;

The facility was specifically designed as a Crèche and is therefore fitted with state of the art security. Access to the facility is managed via a biometric system and only parents or nominated caregivers are allowed access. For complete peace of mind, there are also CCTV cameras installed in all class rooms, recording 24 hours per day.

"Here at Copperleaf Creche we see our members grow into more mature, social and smarter little human beings and we come to love each and every one of them to bits," explains Livvy. "We also have lots of other special and fun days. We celebrate Valentines’ Day, Easter, Family Day, Earth Day, Mothers’ Day, Fathers’ Day, Youth Day, Women’s day, Arbour day, Spring Day, Halloween, Movember and Christmas. Apart from all these celebrations, we also have a number of special visitors to add on to our curriculum."

The school has an extended extra-curricular schedule. On Tuesdays the have Playball, on Wednesdays Monkeynastix and on Thursdays, Be Sharp Beetles visit the children to teach all there is to know about music.

Copperleaf Crèche is situated on one of South Africa’s top golf estates and is fortunate enough to be able to take advantage of this privilege. On Mondays, when there are no golfers around, the

children go for long walks and sometimes even stop off for a picnic somewhere on this beautiful estate.

Every Friday is Bring-Your-Bike Day! Copperleaf Crèche is open Monday’s to Friday’s from 6:30 – 17:30. Livvy and her team follow a

strict schedule of breakfast, circle time, activity/stimulation time, snack time, play time, lunch time, nap time, snack time and then playtime again until the parents arrive. (More naptimes are scheduled of course for the younger ones). As a special additional service to hard-working/golf-playing/

need-some-time-for-myself parents we even offer a baby-sitting service on Saturday mornings! (subject to

a minimum of 5 children).

t’s summer time – Woohoo!, the long awaited and much deserved holiday is here! A word of caution though, apart from the obvious dangers, such as sun and water, there are always other lurking dangers that moms need to deal with, such as crowded holiday spots, unhealthy snacking and broken up routines just to name a few. Follow these tips to relieve some of the stress over this holiday season.

CROWDED PLACES: Tell your kids when they get lost to look for a mom with children. She would be more likely to help. FREEZE! “Use the word "freeze" when they're in real danger, like running toward the street, instead of "stop," which they may hear a lot and tune out.GIRLS IN DRESSES: When dressing little girls in dresses, put shorts or leggings underneath. Always. It allows them to play without exposing themselves, and it helps to instil a sense of privacy.SAND-REMOVAL SECRET: Instead of washing or towelling off sand, rub baby powder over it - it brushes right off! (PS: not on their faces though)HEALTHY SNACKING: Reserve the bottom drawer of your holiday refrigerator for healthy, kid-portioned snacks: apple wedges, cheese sticks, yogurt drinks, veggies and dip, etc.JUICE STAINS ARE NOT INEVITABLE: Pull

up the corners of a juice box and it's less likely to spill if your kid squeezes it.DON'T TRASH THE TRINKETS. You know all those little toys (like from McDonald's) cluttering the child's room? Round them up, put them in a closed-in container and then keep it in your vehicle. This is your 'restaurant toy box. When you take your child to a restaurant, bring the box in with you. The toys will be new again and will keep your child entertained.DECISIONS, DECISIONS: Give your toddler two choices, i.e. "Do

you want to wear the blue one or the red one?” versus asking them, "What do you want to wear?"FOLLOW THROUGH: If you tell your kids you are going to send them to their room or take something away, do it!DON'T FREAK OUT AT THE FIRST WAIL: If the baby is crying that means it’s breathing -- finish your shower.SPOIL YOURSELF: Remember this is your holiday too mom! Let dad take over for a couple of hours and do what you love most – go to the spa, hang out in the shops and buy something for yourself, or simply have a lie-down. From all of us at Copperleaf Crèche, Merry Christmas and a very happy 2014!
