Lake- wood is truly a world class yacht club. It's an honor to serve as your Commodore for 2014. Sue and I are looking forward to a great year. The first big event is the Commodore’s Ball on Janu- ary 25th. We hope to see you all there. Before we go further, I want to thank the Drechsels for all they have done. We saw a num- ber of improvements last year and the projects that are being planned for 2014 were identi- fied in Carl’s Strategic Planning initiative last year. And, Sandy has worked tirelessly behind the scenes in many different areas. Together they have been a very productive team to Lakewood’s benefit. Looking forward, by the time you read this we should be closed on our new loan. Our Fi- nance Committee of Ash Walker and Alan Hill did an incredible job negotiating a 4%, 10-year deal with very favorable terms. They deserve a lot of credit for helping to keep Lakewood in a strong financial condition. You should see the projects that were discussed at the an- nual meeting begin to move for- ward. Contrary to a recent rumor, the dirt work in the green space is not for the foundation of a new clubhouse. The old dredge spoils are being moved to make room for some addi- tional dredging. We do antici- pate beginning the work to refurbish G dock in January. The reconstruction of B shed should start by the end of the month. This all is contingent upon get- ting the details of these projects to the Board for final approval. Both General Manager Terry Chapman and the Planning Committee are working hard to make that happen. The intent is to get what we can completed before the Blessing at the end of March. Those are some of the pri- orities of Management and the Board. For everybody else, our first priority should be to have fun with our friends. We have a wonderful club that we need to enjoy. As you all know, we have a very diverse membership. I truly hope that we can provide something for everyone. The first part of the year looks busy al- ready. In January we have the Seahorse Banquet and the Com- modore’s Ball. In February, our cruisers are going to Pelican Rest in Galveston for Mardi Gras and Kim Bettis has a Fam- ily Mardi Gras Party planned as well. In March the racing season begins with Bay Cup I, followed by the J-105 Mid Winters, and at the end of the month comes the Blessing of the Fleet. The Seahorses begin the TSA Regat- tas in February, but then they are busy all of the time. This doesn’t include the plans that Entertainment Co- Chairs Candace McCoin and Fran Bass are making. They have mentioned, among other things, rotating dock parties when the weather starts to warm up. Watch for details because these two know how to have a party. Those are just a few of the highlights of the first quarter, but you begin to get the idea that this will indeed be a busy year. It should be a year that everyone will enjoy. If you have any sug- gestions, just let us know. And one last thing, I am available to talk about Lake- wood any time. I want to hear your thoughts. LAKEWOOD LOG ❘ January 2014

C R U I S E C O M M I T T E EThe difference between cruis-

ing and yachting: cruising is for theenjoyment of the journey andyachting is for the enjoyment of thedestination. Thanks to Steve andMarisa Hegyesi’s leadership thepast two years, we are now in theenviable position of trying to com-bine the best of both worlds in2014.

We have Mike Downs on-board with his Blueberry & Pecanpancakes that have already be-come a Lakewood tradition, Steveand Marisa only think they are re-tiring, Steve will continue leadingcruises and we will not lose theirsynergy. Austin Allen and DuaneGuidry will be leading the youngerLakewood members on a “Cruisewith the Kids” and we will havemore impromptu, dinner andovernight cruises to Houston YachtClub. The selection of Rodney Towfor beverage director was a given, you can’t buy that kind of experi-ence.

As you can see, this comingyear, we have a team of CruiseCommittee members throwing theirshoulder to the wheel in an effort to

enhance your 2014 cruising expe-rience. The Cruise Committee mis-sion for 2014 will be to provide acasual destination experience thatwill exceed the normal marina ex-pectations.

There are no requirements tojoin the Cruise Committee, otherthan membership at LYC. Simplysend an e-mail to [email protected] with your name and e-mailaddress; this will ensure that you re-ceive the latest e-mailed cruisingcommunications. Also include yourcell phone number & boat name, length, manufacturer, power orsail, to be used for contact andidentification purposes in an emer-gency situation.

Novel Dining Book Club invitesyou to join us on Thursday, January9th, for interesting book talks, goodfriends, and scrumptious food. OurBook Club named “Novel Dining”comes from the fact that we alwaystry to coordinate our dinner menufor the evening to the book underdiscussion that month. We meet inthe Chart Room at 6:00 PM fordrinks and socializing, with dinnerand the book discussion beginningat 6:30 PM. Reservations are re-quired.

For our December meeting weread The Oleanders of San Leon byAndy Upchurch. Ronica & Jim Hallwere the discussion leaders. As aspecial treat, we had Andy Up-church with us to discuss his book.Due to the early publication dead-line, I am not able to report on this, but will do so in my next article.

For the January 9th Book Clubwe are reading Oxygen by CarolCassella. Susan Allen will be thediscussion leader. Oxygen openswith Marie Heaton, an anesthesiol-ogist at the height of her medical ca-

reer, facing a nightmarish operatingroom disaster that ends a child’s lifeand launches a tangled malpracticesuit. As Marie twists through depo-sitions, accusations, and a remorse-ful preoccupation with the deadchild’s mother, she must also copewith her own aging father and con-front questions of love and betrayal, family bonds, and the price of herown choices. With a final twist asheartrending as it is redeeming,Oxygen is a gripping and auspi-cious debut.

Even if you have not read thebook, you are welcome to join thefun, lively group for dinner and dis-cussion. Please call the club forreservations no later than 5:00 PM.on the Wednesday before the meet-ing.

What a great year 2013 wasfor our club! NOW is a great op-portunity to welcome new membersand have delightful times with newand old friends.

Our committee’s mission is “toenhance, promote and develop pro-grams designed to attract new mem-bers to LYC, as well as retainexisting members.”

A terrific way to meet peopleand share common interests is tojoin a committee. There are cur-rently 30 committees (yes, 30). Logon to the LYC website, look underClub Info, Committees, and find acommittee that interests you. Cometo a committee meeting (the meetingtime and dates are in the weekly E-letter), and you will be very wel-comed. We want your help andgood ideas.

Hope to see you all at theMember Mixer the first Friday of the

month. Sign in at the table in thelounge and pick up your tickets forgreat prizes, including the favoriteSunday Champagne Brunch for 4.If you are a new member, be sure toreceive the red tickets. Rememberto wear your nametag for a chanceat an additional prize.

Funny thing—since we movedour boat to Lakewood years ago,our deck and carpet does not havenasty bird “droppings,” that weused to walk in and track into thecockpit. The reason is—our dockmasters, David, and now Cody, wash down the docks. We trulyhave the best marina in Texas!

Teaser—the new calendar isloaded with fun. Watch nextmonth’s column for exciting news!

Through rain, wind and thebayou rising, Sandy Drechsel mas-terfully edited the Lakewood LOGfor eight years. She and ImmediatePast Commodore Carl joined Lake-wood Yacht Club in 2005. She vol-unteered to be editor and felt thatwas a great way to meet people.Sandy says she is most proud ofmeeting the deadlines even withmedical issues, family emergenciesand events like Hurricanes Rita andIke.

She is most proud that the Lake-wood Log has never been late, evenwhen she and Carl were staying atthe Hyatt Lost Pines near Bastropduring Hurricane Ike. Continuing

communications through disasters isdefinitely a focus that Sandy haslearned is important living so closeto the Gulf.

Sandy has seen the Log in-crease from 12 to 20 pages, from anewsletter where all the Flag Offi-cers wrote each month, to a Flag ro-tation system, and to an increase inpictures and articles. We talkedabout an electronic newsletter andadditional social media for theClub. She praised Kim Bettis whosuccessfully uses Facebook with theyouth committee for LYC communi-cations.

Through these eight years,Sandy has not only worked as the

L A D I E S A S S O C I A T I O NFun and festivities were on the

calendar for the Lakewood ladies inDecember. The month began withJoy Edwards and her elves trans-forming the club into a holiday won-derland. The elaborate decorationsprovided a visual treat for visitors ofall ages to Lakewood.

Several days later the LadiesAssociation Board celebrated theirsuccessful year at a Board Appreci-ation luncheon in the foyer to theBallroom. The Commodore ex-pressed heart-felt thanks for all thehard work performed by the LadiesAssociation this year. Chef Cristyprepared a delicious luncheon ofcream of asparagus soup, beefmedallions on a winter salad, and awarm apple crumble – a perfectmenu for a cold winter day. Outgo-ing President Rosemary Bettisthanked the Executive Board andCommittee chairs for all their hardwork and presented each memberwith a gift. The Board gave Rose-mary a gift in gratitude for her lead-ership.

Every year the Ladies Associa-tion gives the Club a gift and thisyear’s gift is actually two gifts: a newrug for the main entry into the club-house and a new rug for the foyerinto the ballroom. The rugs were cus-tom designed with nautical themesand should be ready sometime in thespring.

On Friday the 13th there wasno bad luck when the ladies heldtheir annual Christmas luncheon. Theleft-right-left-right game of passing awrapped gift was a fun-filled way toshare the fellowship of Christmas.

Ladies Association activities in2013 included participating in theTaste of Lakewood, a tour of winer-ies and shopping in Fredericksburg, sponsoring a booth at Keels andWheels, sponsoring the Flag dinner,a cruise to HYC, a spectacular fash-ion show in September, a successfulFeliz Navidad Market in November,an overnight trip to the Woodlandsin November, several luncheons atthe club and manning the Ship’sStore all year. It was a busy yearand 2014 promises to be just aseventful. The year begins with the in-stallation of the new President, RozClayton on January 17th in the ball-room at 11:30 AM.

Every lady who is a member ofLakewood is automatically a mem-ber of the Ladies Association and wewould love for you to join us at anyor all of the events in 2014. Pleaseconsider making “Becoming MoreActive in the Lakewood Ladies Asso-ciation” one of your New Year’s res-olutions!

We asked her if she and Carlmight sail around the world, captainthe next America’s Cup or race inthe Trans Pac. But Sandy says, no,she would like to take a course atthe CIA (Culinary Institute of Amer-ica). Those who know Sandy, knowwhat a great cook she is, and weare sure this will bring new ideas to

Lakewood Yacht Club’s member-ship voted overwhelmingly at theirAnnual Meeting on Nov. 16 to ap-prove a new military classification ofmembership.

“Since we are a private, mem-ber-owned club, any changes in ourby-laws require a vote of our Resi-dent and Junior members,” ex-plained Lakewood’s Immediate PastCommodore Carl Drechsel.

With the expansion of personnelat Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base, veteran and Past Commodore BobFuller initiated the idea of a MilitaryMembership and took it to the club’sGrowth & Retention Committee lastspring. It applies to an active dutyU.S. Military and Coast Guard per-son serving for not less than 365consecutive days. A proposal wascreated and sent this fall to the club’sBoard of Directors where it was ap-proved and then mailed to the mem-bership for a vote.

“We felt this was an opportunity

to recognize the growing militarypresence at Ellington Field and per-haps expand our membership withquality people serving in the mili-tary,” added PC Bob Fuller. “Hav-ing met with the Commanders ofmost of the Units at Ellington, theidea has been met with great enthu-siasm. LTC Robert Lee Hefner of theU.S. Army’s 75th Training Com-mand has been extremely helpfulwith introductions to the variousCommands.” Fuller also noted thatit is common for yacht clubs with alocal military presence to have sucha class of membership; CorpusChristi, San Diego, and Pensacolabeing prime examples.

cult pregnancy, her daughter-in-lawpresented the family with a beauti-ful baby girl named Sophie. Herweight was only two pounds so shewill have to remain in the hospitalfor awhile. We hear that Jan can’tstand being so far away and will begoing to Florida to view her newgranddaughter in the very near fu-ture.

Bob and Sue Warters had agreat time on a cruise from Floridato South Carolina. They were onthe same boat that the Com-modore’s Cruise used this year. There were no problems and theyhad a great trip. After the cruise, they spent Thanksgiving with theirson, David and daughter-in-law,Shelly in Charleston. David is adoctor at the VA Hospital there andthey live aboard their boat.

Well, Gertie hopes to hearfrom you with the news of your hol-iday travel and parties and whowas naughty and who was nice.
