FROM THE PASTOR
What’s New?
What is new? This short, odd word changes everything. New
beginning, new year. New life, newlywed. New England,
New Jersey, New Orleans, new froner. New heart, new knee.
New wave, new age. New Deal, new math. Newborn,
newcomer, newbie.
New pastor. I guess I am new ... at least to you. This Old English
adjecve indicates fresh, unheard of, or novel. In this regard, I
am not so new. By every indicaon, I see myself as a regular,
same-ol’ kind of guy, dedicated to the Gospel of Jesus and how
that gospel compels us to do church. These aren’t new ideas.
In fact, the Gospel of Jesus is old fare. Or is it? Of course, as an
historic document the Gospel story is not new. But we
believe – right? – that the Gospel story is the Living Word of God,
meaning the story of Jesus is alive and transformave for us
today.
Maybe I am asking the wrong queson. Perhaps I should
wonder: How might the Gospel of Jesus make me new? Yikes!
Now I’m meddling. Does the Gospel of Jesus renew me?

(From the Pastor connued)
Renew is originally based on the Lan renovare, meaning revive, or
resume, like a fresh re-start. In the Bible, we hear:
For Christ's love compels us, because we are convinced that one died
for all, and therefore all died. And he died for all, that those who live
should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them
and was raised again. So from now on we regard no one from a
worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way,
we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new
creaon has come: The old has gone, the new is here! (2 Corinthians
5:14-17, NIV, italics mine)
I may be new to you. You may be new to me. We may do a few new
things together and many old things together. But what maFers
most is that Christ’s love compels us in a new way. Christ’s love
compels us to be new and to do new, to be renewed in love for
others.
Grace to you, and peace,
Pastor Jeff
