It’S ShoWtIMECheck out this month’s CPS focus on Birmingham.

Our centre page spread is dedicated to a City we are getting to know better over this print show season. Printwear and Promotion plus Focus on Imaging shows in March are followed this month with Sign and Digital, all climaxing with IPEX in May.

Do you know what your customers call you behind your back?

We listen out for below the line feedback at our own shop Colourfast and overhear our visitors on mobiles declaring they are at the printers or down the copy shop. Company inplants are referred to as print rooms or print facilities so no rush for us to hang our hat on the word digital, even though we, with you, pioneered the new technology. The customers are not that interested how their print products are made, they could be baked liked thermography, grilled as in xerography or turned into a liquid gas with di-sublimation or does anyone remember that old process of making plates and separating oil from water, litho something or other?. It’s all called printing… simples.

Duplo announce

Scarborough based Duraweld has announced with pleasure that Richard Senior, owner and chairman of Duraweld Ltd., has completed the sale of the company to two of its managers, Hannah Senior, and her husband Mark Yeung. Hannah is the company’s Chief Operating Officer and Mark its Finance Manager.

The buy-out strengthens the company’s position as one of the UK’s leading producers of customised stationery, presentation and packaging products, and provides a new platform to develop the business going forward.

Hannah Senior, Richard’s daughter, joined the company in September 2008, after completing an MBA at Stanford Graduate School of Business, California. Before attending Stanford, Hannah worked as a strategy consultant at Marakon Associates, and as a manager at Tesco.com.

Whilst at Stanford, Hannah’s particular area of interest included entrepreneurship and family businesses. These interests meant returning to Scarborough to bring her wider experience to her family business presenting a great opportunity for father and daughter alike. Since joining Duraweld, Hannah has been closely involved with all aspects of the business, including the launch of its new website featuring the unique ‘build your own binder’ service.

Mark Yeung joined Duraweld in 2009, and took over the running of the company’s financial operations. A graduate in manufacturing engineering and with an MBA from Harvard, Mark worked for management consultants McKinsey and Company and was part of the team which set up Tesco’s ‘Fresh & Easy’ retail operation in the US.

Richard Senior, who has led the company since 1972, will be staying on as a consultant for the next three years. Richard commented: “I am delighted that this young, energetic management team will be leading the business into the future. Since joining Duraweld, Hannah and Mark have brought with them lots of fresh thinking and new ideas that are having a very positive impact. It’s great news for the company and I wish them every success in the future.”

Hannah Senior said: “We are thrilled to be the new owners of Duraweld and would like to thank our employees and customers for their fantastic encouragement and support. Duraweld is a well known and respected name throughout the industry, and our decision to purchase the business has been based on the fantastic range of opportunities we see for it to grow and develop.

Our aim now is to strengthen and streamline our core business, whilst taking advantage of new opportunities along the way. We will continue to develop and invest in our online service, be committed to environmentally friendly business practises, and in direct response to customer demand, have just expanded our product range to include an exciting range of ‘paper over board’ ring binders.”

Mark added: “Whilst the economic climate continues to be challenging, we have great ambitions for the company. Our confidence in the committed and skilled team at Duraweld is absolute. We are especially delighted that Richard has agreed to stay on as a consultant, which will enable us to draw on his vast knowledge of the industry, and help ensure a seamless transition.”The company website is at www.duraweld.co.uk

Morgana rebrands for IPEX

IPEX 2010 will see Morgana Systems confirm its position as a leader in digital finishing with a bigger than ever range of specialised products and systems displayed on the company’s largest ever stand. The stand will also see the rolling out of a fresh visual style for Morgana built around a newly designed logo which managing director Quen Baum claims will a provide stronger and more immediately recognisable identity.

“Our previous logo has served us for over twenty years”, Baum commented, “and we felt it was time that we designed something visually stronger that would make us stand out a bit more from the crowd. We also wanted something simple that would work equally well in the UK and in our rapidly growing export markets.” The latter was a particularly important consideration bearing in mind that 85% of products manufactured at Morgana’s Milton Keynes headquarters are now destined for export.

The new Morgana identity is built around what Quen Baum describes as a ‘Big M’ which can be adapted easily for all uses from stationery and product branding to exhibition stands. Underneath the ‘M’ is the slogan ‘Digital Finishing for Digital Printers’, which spells out the area in which Morgana has established its global reputation as leaders and innovators

Although the logo moves away totally from the previous design, the colours are the same to provide a measure of continuity. The illustration shows an artist impression of how the new logo will appear on the 70m long IPEX stand.Morgana Systems, 01908 608888

For twenty seven years Friedheim have been UK distributors for Schneider Senator Guillotines and will continue to be. From February 2010 Duplo UK will become the sole UK (end user) Sales Agent for the products via Friedheim for the 78 and 92 models. Friedheim will continue to service the machines and supply parts

This comes after the strategic partnership announcement last summer between Duplo and Friedheim

‘ The Finishing Alliance’ aimed at being the supplier of the widest range of finishing equipment available from a single source

This is a significant move from both parts and mutually beneficial, as Duplo has an opportunity to extend their product offering to their customers and give them exactly what they need, and Friedheim remain in control of the product and the brand and still have access to all sales sites.

Duplo have been selling IDEAL guillotines since 2006 and the Schneider Senator range is very complimentary as the IDEAL range stops at 720mm width and

the Schneiders that Duplo can sell begin at 780mm. Duplo will continue to sell the IDEAL range.

In 2009 Duplo announced more ‘heavy duty’ finishing equipment, including the Alpha Saddle Stitcher, DuBinder PUR binder and DSF-5000 sheet feeder, so the Schneiders compliment Duplo’s product range growth very well. Duplo already has a tender for a local council for Duplo’s first Schneider 78 sale, and an opportunity for 2 x Schneider 92s. This is part of an aggressive new strategy for Duplo UK who aim to add many third party sole distributorships in 2010

IDEAL guillotine sales have increased by 20% in four years, so Duplo has a good model for selling guillotines in the UK.

“We are extremely excited about this new deal with Friedheim. We are aggressively looking to expand our product range and serve our customers with new products that continue to meet their requirements. All part of the plan to double the turnover of the Duplo UK business in five years.” Tony Lock, Duplo UK Managing Director.Telephone: 01372 478279 , www.duplouk.com

EFI and Xerox Corporation have begun shipping the Fiery Network Controller for the Xerox WorkCentre 7700 Series of colour multifunction printers (MFPs) to meet the demanding requirements of environments where maximum productivity, ease of use, and high quality colour are essential. The WorkCentre 7700 Series MFPs are one of the first to support Fiery VUE, the desktop application that makes publishing of professional looking finished documents fast and simple.

With speeds up to 50 pages per minute (ppm) in colour and up to 75 ppm in black and white, the WorkCentre 7700 Series handle everything from general office documents to high volume colour print jobs. These MFPs also manage multiple printing, copying, scanning and faxing tasks simultaneously without interruption for quick turnarounds.

“EFI Fiery controllers drive Xerox engines across our product line, ensuring customers ranging in size from the small to the high volume commercial printer can quickly and painlessly produce vibrant looking documents,” said Leah Quesada, vice president of office marketing, Xerox Corporation. “The WorkCentre 7700 Series with the Fiery controller delivers a unique combination of increased productivity and easy to use colour management tools. It is like achieving expert results without being an expert.”

“Our latest Fiery controller paired with the advanced features of the WorkCentre 7700 Series ensure that workers of any skill level can easily produce eye catching documents,” said John Henze, vice president of marketing, Fiery division, EFI. “While there are many new capabilities to enhance productivity and colour quality, we’re excited to offer WorkCentre 7700 Series users the game changing Fiery VUE application, which takes all the complexity out of producing professional documents.”

For enterprises demanding colour control and maximum image quality, there is the optional Fiery Colour Profiler Suite with integrated colour management tools that ensure total colour quality control in the print workflow. Users looking for high quality “out-of the-box” colour can rely on Fiery ColorWise colour management tools, while the Spot-On option ensures the best match of PANTONE colours and streamlines workflow with standardised corporate colour palettes.

Besides colour quality, Fiery controllers are synonymous with high performance. The Fiery controller’s Smart RIP technology significantly improves performance by allowing one page to be printed while subsequent pages are being processed, enabling

more pages to be printed per hour. To speed up printing processes users have the option to let Fiery Hot Folders and Virtual Printers automate the print submission process, saving time when printing repetitive types of jobs. www.efi .com

FuJIFIlM has announced that it is due to showcase its widest range of screen and inkjet solutions for producing wide and super-wide format print at FESPA 2010, Hall B1 Stand 220. The combination of an impressive line up of printers (all fuelled by Fujifilm Sericol’s award-winning Uvijet inks) together with a new system to be announced in the coming weeks designed to standardise screen and inkjet production, and the euromedia range mean that the Fujifilm stand is set to be a ‘must-see’ at FESPA 2010.

SuPErWIdE outdoor aPPlIcatIonSDemonstrating how printers can take advantage of the emerging market for clip-frame billboard banners printed on woven polyethylene (PE) and other superwide format display graphics, the recently-

launched Uvistar superwide format printer will be shown on the stand as the most flexible, cost efficient printer in its class.

The Uvistar is available in four different models, producing high quality output at throughput speeds in excess of 300m2/hour. A proven multi-roll system with a highly intuitive user interface, it provides fast and efficient start up with low media wastage, and has the ability to handle rolls of varying widths up to five metres. In combination with the new vibrant Fujifilm Sericol Uvijet QK inks, the printers can produce jobs on a very wide range of flexible media, including PE, with no curing or ink starvation issues and with excellent inter-coat lay down for backlit and solid prints.

acuItY advancE hSFujifilm will be showcasing the new Acuity Advance HS, on show for the first time in continental Europe. The Acuity produces near-photographic quality images at speeds of up to 65m2/hr, and is an excellent mid-range flatbed for high-quality POP and signage.

thE onSEt EFFEctVisitors to the stand can also see the newest model in the high performance Inca Onset series, which has quickly established itself as a popular choice for productivity. The Onset S20 is a UV curing inkjet flatbed printer that can print

edge to edge onto rigid and flexible substrates at production speeds of 250m2/hr and 50 full bed sheets (3.14 x 1.6m), with the ability to process substrates as thick as 50mm. It also boasts a gloss level control for great versatility in its finish. These

revolutionary printers have represented a major change in business dynamics for the industry, as digital flatbed becomes an economical method of producing high-impact visual images.

For mid range versatility, the Spyder V will also be on show with the Uvijet Ultratone ink system. Based on the design of the popular Spyder 320 platform, the Spyder V has a production speed of up to 93m2/hr onto a wide range of flexible and rigid substrates of up to 30mm thick. The Ultratone ink system increases the colour gamut, producing improved colour reproduction and more accurate spot colours.

EuroMEdIaCompleting the line-up is Fujifilm’s euromedia brand, which provides a dedicated offering for wide format printing. This well known brand of media, software, inks and support comprises hundreds of roll media products for all water-based, solvent-based and UV-printing and laminating applications. These could range from low cost posters, indoor and outdoor banners, flags, exhibition graphics, signmaking and vehicle wraps, to backlit and art prints, and be fulfilled with standard media to novel and high-value products for the more specialist applications.

Keith Harley, European marketing director at Fujifilm Sericol, comments, “We are very excited to have a brand new system on stand which we will be announcing more details of in the next few weeks, along with the first showing in continental Europe of the Acuity Advance HS.” He adds, “In addition, the new applications that are now possible using Uvistar are very exciting for the industry as a whole, and combined with our other wide format offerings and ink expertise, we are looking forward to demonstrating the new opportunities printers can now take advantage of.”www.fujifi lmholdings.com

WatKISS Automation has announced the introduction of a new corporate identity, which will be implemented ahead of the Ipex 2010 exhibition in May.

The company’s former ‘WA’ logo has been in use, in varying forms, for over 25 years during which time there have been major changes in the industry, the company, its products and its customers. The new identity reflects these changes and the continuous evolution of a company that serves a wide customer base in the printing and graphic communications industry.

The new logo presents a fresh, modern look that is in keeping with the company’s forward thinking and innovative approach to the print finishing environment - which in the past 35 years has revolutionised the way people think about collating and booklet making. The Watkiss name is well known and highly respected in the industry, so the new logo features the name ‘Watkiss’ prominently, whilst retaining the company’s distinctive use of orange.

“With Ipex 2010 only a few weeks away, we are encouraging everybody to take a fresh look at Watkiss” says Sales Director Paul Attew, “Since the last Ipex in 2006, we have expanded into new markets, with new business partners, and we will be unveiling new products to improve quality, efficiency and productivity in the finishing department. “

“We believe in building long-term relationships with our customers and in understanding their needs – that’s how we can deliver so many breakthrough innovations” continues Attew “and we have invested heavily in both product design and our manufacturing

facilities in recent years to ensure that we continue as an industry leader.”

Watkiss has long been a pioneer in the printing industry. It is a wholly family owned concern that has been designing and manufacturing innovative print finishing equipment in Sandy, Bedfordshire since 1974. In its 35 year history, the company has received numerous awards for business performance and product design, including the Queens Award for Export and the Design Council’s coveted British Design Award (twice).

The company serves the digital and offset print market through direct sales, a world-wide distribution channel and OEM partners. The principal product ranges include the Watkiss Vario and Watkiss DigiVAC Collating and Finishing Systems, the Watkiss BookMaster, Watkiss SpineMaster, and the Watkiss PowerSquare.Watkiss Automation,Tel.:01767 685700, email: [email protected]

an electronic sting or a new corporate style for PaperCo are the two categories of design work for degree level design students wanting to enter the paper merchant group’s Brief Encounters 2010 awards.

“It’s a multi-media challenge this year and one that will test and stretch these creative students working to a specific brief, possibly the first commercial remit they have come up against,” says Veronica Heaven, corporate responsibility director of PaperCo.

“Our close collaboration with leading design colleges helps them with their course work but always impresses us and shows just what excellent talent is coming through. The lecturers who help us each year suggested we use PaperCo as the subject so we

can judge best if they have done their research and understood the company but this is an educational project and we do not take advantage of the students work by using it commercially ourselves. If ever we did they would be reimbursed.”

In the Corporate Style Review brief, students are invited to create a typographical style, using the PaperCo branding and logo, which would work across corporate stationery, its web site and a Powerpoint presentation template. The concept needs to work not only for the main company but for its local trading operations which include: Donald Murray Paper; Dixon & Roe; Mason’s Paper; North West Paper; Rothera & Brereton; and Southern Paper

The Corporate Electronic Sting brief includes

two options. The first invites students to create an electronic sting or short video of about 20-30 seconds which communicates one or a selection of the services that PaperCo offers to designers, end users and printers, including its dummy-making service. Alternatively they can create a similar length sting or video conveying the link between communication and paper and taking into account sustainability, issues including the role of paper in communication and/or the effects of trees on climate change strategies.

Bob Ide, head of marketing at PaperCo, says: “We are very proud of the Brief Encounters project. In addition to introducing graphic designers of tomorrow to our company it also enables us to underpin the message that paper is a sustainable, environmentally acceptable product and that its scope to carry and enhance messages and branding is second to none, even in today’s multi-media world.”

Last year Norwich University College of the Arts scored a double with Gold Awards for Alex Ecob and Amber Sinclair. Rival colleges will be out to reclaim these top titles this year.

FaSt growing Just Digital of Cambridgeshire has installed a second Morgana DocuMaster total finishing system to cope with increased demand for output from its Xerox 8000, 7000 and 4110 print engines. “In fact”, says M.D. Adam Hill, “We upgraded our original DocuMaster to the latest Mk 111 model and bought another one as well.”

The reason for the purchase is the company’s continued recession beating growth which has resulted in annual turnover increases averaging £300,000 over the last six years. Adam Hill attributes this to high standards of customer service in a business where over 90% of output is produced to a demanding same day schedule, coupled with a niche marketing policy that has successfully identified areas of business that are largely recession proof.

Just Digital produces a wide range of short run colour work, all of it time critical, and cannot aff ord fi nishing bott lenecks. “The original DocuMaster totally streamlined our bookletmaking operation”, says Adam “and with two we will be able to respond even more quickly to customer demand.”Further time savings have resulted from siting the two machines alongside one another so that one operator can supervise both”

duPlo UK has announced a nationwide search for their largest Digital Duplicator user.

Duplo are asking all Duprinter users to visit the Duplo UK website homepage where there is a link to a quick 60 second survey, with the user with the highest print volume on one single machine winning a case of champagne.

Peter Jolly Marketing Manager at Duplo UK comments “These fantastically versatile print devices have been serving commercial printers, schools and government print rooms well for many many years. They have the usability of an office photocopier with the qualities that can reach those of a lithographic press. Their combination of environmentally-friendly benefits, fast and extremely cheap print has meant that we have seen a resurgence in demand for our Duprinters during the recession; we felt that it would be a great time to find the UK’s highest volume user.”

Duplo’s Duprinter range has been in the UK market place for over 20 years, with machines from this very early period still being used today. Duplo’s current Duprinter range includes both A4 and A3 models with both friction and suction feed, with speeds up to 150 sheets per minute and costs as low as 0.015p.To join Duplo’s hunt for the No.1 UK Duprinter user please visit www.duploandyou.co.uk/duprinterstars and fi ll in the quick form.

UV COATING TECHNOLOGY

Copy Shop News | April 201010

The Future of Print FinishingIn spite of what many may think, UV curable liquid coating technology has been around for years. Primarily used in the lithographic and screen print industries, UV curable liquid coatings were used mainly to either achieve a specifi c, fi nished look or to provide abrasion protection to printed images.

For YEarS, thESE industry paths have crossed little, but that’s no

longer the case. The localisation and personalisation of print campaigns made possible by digital printing have changed that game forever. No longer are runs of two to twenty thousand prints or more required to be competitive. In fact, it is quite the opposite. The widespread use of digital printing has created a technology crossover like no other in the imaging industry. So, in like fashion, the methods and equipment used for printing and finishing are also metamorphosing into smaller, faster, more user friendly and less expensive products. This metamorphosis has especially affected UV curable liquid coating technology.

The demand by digital printers for less expensive UV curable liquid coating technology has improved the design of coating equipment as well as liquid coating formulations. UV curable liquid coaters that previously measured 5-8 metres long to accommodate long UV curing paths have successfully been shortened to as little as a metre long. These more compact liquid coaters can still achieve 95% of the coating smoothness of the longer coaters because of advances in equipment design and coating formulation.

Besides quicker curing times, today’s liquid coatings have also advanced to offer a variety of speciality finishes and applications. What was once an offering of a basic gloss, lustre or matt finish has blossomed into a whole host of coating types that include speciality products like dry erase, anti graffiti and even anti slip finishes. Truly, a window of opportunity has been opened when it comes to UV curable liquid coating technology in both terms of reduced cost and wider variety of products being available.

One company who have remained a reliable presence in the finishing industry and consistently demonstrated their ability to keep abreast of such changes are Drytac, a global manufacturer and distributor of an extensive range of products for graphics and print finishing, including

over laminating films, mounting adhesives, as well as a wide range of finishing equipment. Over the past three decades Drytac has evolved into a key player in the industry, and are

recognised as leaders in innovation in not only product development and the manufacture of filmic lamination, but more recently in liquid laminating technology.

Their extensive product portfolio of uv and water-based coaters and coatings

includes the VersaCoater™ Documate Plus. Compatible with traditional offset, litho, digital press and photographic output, including wax infused low melt toner systems like the Konica Minolta

C6500 printer, Xiekon and Indigo, this easy to use machine features

variable coating thickness control for cut sheets up to

350gsm. Based on breakthrough VersaCoater™

UV coating technology custom engineered for narrow format digital press output, the VersaCoater™ DocuMate Plus represents the latest in uv curable coating equipment. It produces high volume, commercial quality output in a compact footprint (1016mm x 698mm x 1041mm); with a remarkably low cost from 2p per SRA3 sheet.

It is ideal for protecting documents from Konica Minolta C6500 series, DocuColor Series Digital Presses, Canon C1, Ricoh and similar digital colour printers. Typical applications include digitally printed brochures, book covers, business or greeting cards, calendars, post cards, self adhesive decals and mailers – up to a maximum of 330mm wide.

Single lever controls for media thickness and coating thickness streamline job set up, while the automated clean up cycle make this one of the easiest coaters on the market to use and maintain. Compact footprint, low staff training costs, and low maintenance costs make the VersaCoater™ Documate Plus an excellent value for print shops wanting multi-featured UV curable coating capabilities at a low cost.

Drytac will be demonstrating this machine at a number of shows this year including Ipex taking place at the Birmingham NEC in May and also at Fespa Digital in Munich in June. At both shows, there will be regular demonstrations throughout the show and some fantastic deals to be had so make sure you come along. Alternatively if you would prefer to arrange a one to one meeting with liquid coating Sales Manager, Alan Lawrence, to discuss your business requirements and applications in more detail, then please call Drytac on 0117 958 6500.

drYtac Europe Ltd, a manufacturer of products for graphics finishing and display, will be launching two new liquid coatings for a range of finishing applications at Sign & Digital UK in April.

To be used in conjunction with the Drytac range of water based liquid laminators or by hand application if preferred, these two new liquids are the latest additions to the already extensive range of EnduraCoat low-VOC water-based coatings.

The first on offer, EnduraCoat Fine Art, is available in both a Gloss and Satin finish. It is a premium grade coating that has been especially developed for the protection and enhancement of canvas/giclée prints and eliminates the “micro air bubble issue” commonly found in many giclée protection

coatings. The second coating to be launched

is EnduraCoat Intego, a quick drying, low cost gloss coating designed for mop on applications. The coating is not only virtually odour free but also incorporates UV inhibitors rendering it suitable for three years outdoors.

On the Drytac stand at Sign & Digital UK you will see examples of

the coatings first hand, as well as seeing the AFC 1600

water based flood coater in action with

live demonstrations throughout the day.

Launched only last year, the AFC Series has already proved to be a huge success for those in the industry

looking for a lower cost solution to protecting inkjet graphics on vinyl, PSA, canvas, wall coverings and other flexible substrates.

Furthermore, it is available in three different sizes (1600mm, 2200mm and 3200mm) and is very easy to operate and clean, with its multiple coating tanks and quick disconnect feature.

Also on the stand this year will be the brand new DES-6 Edger, a compact, simple and cost effective edging system for both curved and straight boards. Ideal for edging digitally cut eco-board structures like furniture, shelving and displays for retail displays and exhibitions.

You will also see the JetMounter™1600, a versatile wide format roller laminator with roll to roll capability and a heated top roller that allows it to be used with Heatset laminates and single sided thermal adhesives as well. For fi rst hand regular demonstrations and for your fi rst look at the new machine, visit Hall 7, Stand F54 at Sign & Digital UK or phone Drytac on 0117 958 6500.

oPInIonatEd, EthIcal, WIttY and customer-minded; these are some of the

verdicts on George Clarke, president of Ipex 2010. He is managing director of Heidelberg UK and he argues that it is this role that gave him the credibility and confidence to take on the Ipex 2010 advisory and ambassadorial role.

George is a leading light within PICON, the graphic arts supplier’s organisation in the UK, which sold the Ipex show to exhibition organiser IIR Exhibitions, an Informa business, in 2006. He still believes that was the right decision, leaving PICON to provide an advisory, lobbying and networking service and letting the experienced international exhibition specialists run this prestigious show which attracts a huge number of overseas visitors. Nevertheless he says that PICON must continue to support the show to the hilt.

Trevor Crawford, event director of Ipex, says: “George probably has more experience of major trade shows, such as Ipex, than anyone else in the industry. He has always shown great loyalty and support to Ipex and been very much part of its international development. His knowledge and understanding of the industry is second to none and his no nonsense approach makes him an excellent barometer of what will, and what will not, work.”

This is George’s sixth Ipex. It’s a show he loves

with all its design, marketing, financial, logistical and commercial challenges and rewards. Since his first Ipex in 1993 he has always been with Heidelberg,

initially as finance director but then as sales director and managing director.

But George’s destiny in print was not obvious from an early age. Holiday jobs included work as a forklift truck driver at a local Kent jam factory and a stint at the British Museum, reflecting his lifelong passion for history.

His father was in advertising in the days

when Fleet Street was the home to the UK national newspapers. He sought his father’s advice on careers only when his mother was pressing him to go into law, something he was determined to avoid. Accountancy, it was agreed, would give him a good basis for any business and so he joined KPMG, qualifying in three years and quickly moving into industry and reporting at board level at 26 years of age with responsibility for 900 people within Beaufort Sea and Air Equipment.

His next move was a blind alley and feeling that the company and his position was insecure he decided to look about for an alternative, not least because his

wife was expecting the first of his four children. Heidelberg UK was looking for a finance director.

The Brentford HQ building was brand new and he was impressed by Wolfgang Gorth and the team of UK directors. He was called back for what he describes as “the toughest interview of my life”, where he had to convince Heidelberg group executives Messrs Zimmerman, Dosch and Schlayer (a trio he still admires) as well as the UK directors that he was the man for the job. He did, although he counts himself lucky that no one noticed that he had put on odd shoes that morning!

Just before Ipex, on 1 May 2010, George will celebrate his 25th anniversary with Heidelberg, a period of personal growth and development. It was former managing director Wolfgang Gorth who encouraged George to move from finance to take on the sales directorship (from fact to fiction), believing that without frontline experience he could not be effective at the top.

For George it was the right move. “Selling is a fantastic job, meeting a rich variety of people. There have been individual sales successes which have given me great pleasure. Winning customers back from the competition is one of the greatest highlights; it’s like welcoming back one of the extended family.

The new Ipex 2010 website www.ipex.org includes sales brochures, the exhibition layout, an exhibitor list as well as marketing and logistical information. It also has information and voting forms for the international Ipex 2010 ‘Champions Print’ Awards which were launched to acknowledge the huge contributions of those who have influenced and shaped the development of the printing industry.

thE PrIntErS’ charItablE Corporation, the leading national

charity for the UK printing and publishing industries, announces it has rebranded as The Printing Charity.

ImageThe charity’s rebrand was launched on

23 March, at an event for the printing and publishing industries hosted by the charity’s President, Michael Johnson, at 11 Downing Street, by kind permission of the Rt. Hon. Alistair Darling MP, Chancellor of the Exchequer.

The new name reflects the charity’s desire to appeal to a wider group of people and their dependents in today’s printing, publishing, graphic arts and allied trades, but without losing its relevance to those in traditional printing and publishing.

Michael Johnson, the charity’s President, says: “We know it’s a very difficult time for many in the sectors we support and the rebranding is key to our strategic objective of ensuring

more people benefit from our services. The word ‘printing’ in our new name is not only more inclusive, but also builds on our heritage of supporting people in printing and the allied trades since 1827.”

The new logo, designed by Manor Creative, incorporates the four CMYK printing blocks used in the colour printing process. Each of the printing blocks represents one of the charity’s four key services: Homes, Helps, Links and Futures.

Adds Stephen Gilbert, the charity’s Chief Executive: “We believe the new working name and logo is critical to our continued relevance to the people the

charity was set up to help.” The rebranding is the result of a

major review the charity undertook as part of its drive to raise its profile and increase the number of people it supports financially. The review included a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with City University’s Cass Business School, which assessed the charity’s service delivery to those who work or have worked in an industry that is continuing to undergo significant change. To find out more, see: www.theprintingcharity.org.uk . Flag firm MD takes on Everest trek challenge

thE managing director of a flag firm which has supported adventurous expeditions and record-breaking missions for more than five years has completed a tough two week trek to the world’s highest mountain.

Hampshire Flag’s Managing Director Graham Wilkinson fulfilled the ambition of a lifetime when he undertook the challenge to reach the base camp of Mount Everest.

Graham, who braved temperatures of -20 and battled with altitude sickness during the expedition, stayed true to his flag manufacturing roots by taking with him a digital printed flag emblazoned with the Hampshire Flag logo.

As one of the UK’s leading flag manufacturers, Hampshire Flag supports various charities and expeditions including the on-going campaigns of swimmer and environmentalist Lewis Pugh, Action for Kids, Help for Heroes, Samaritans and Gumboots by donating an array of flag products.

“The sense of achievement is incredible and I am delighted to have reached base camp. There were some very tough moments, both physically and mentally, but the team spirit and camaraderie helped me get through it,” said Graham, ‘Achiever of the Year’ award winner at a prestigious business awards ceremony a few years ago.

“We have given so much support to determined and brave individuals who push themselves to the extreme in order to raise money and awareness for what they believe in. I have been inspired by each and every one of these people and now I have fulfilled this dream, it has whetted my appetite for the next challenge!” he added.

badge and the slogan ‘Pompey ‘til I die’ was manufactured and donated by Hampshire Flag for Pompey fans to sign.

The 40ft by 20ft banner was produced after The Portsmouth News wanted a symbol of support for the club and approached the Waterlooville firm with the idea.

It took three machinists seven and a half hours to make the flag which was taken to local schools and to Guildhall Square in Portsmouth to be signed. Supporters also queued outside Fratton Park ahead of the FA Cup quarter final win against Birmingham City to add their names to thousands of signatures already written in blue marker pen on the massive banner.

Graham Wilkinson, Hampshire Flag’s Managing Director, said: “We’ve been an on going supplier to Portsmouth Football Club for years and it’s a privilege to show our loyalty and support at this critical time by supplying the large scale supporters’ flag for fans to sign.”

Thousands of fans and Pompey players signed it within just a week and millions saw the flag live on TV as it was

unfurled in the stadium.Mark Acheson, Deputy Editor of The

Portsmouth News, said, “We wanted to give fans a chance to express how much Pompey means to them and thanks to Hampshire Flag, our idea of a giant banner has become reality.”

“Along with Pompey’s fans both local and worldwide, we are extremely grateful for their support and we are overwhelmed by the phenomenal response,” added Mark.

Following Pompey’s 2-0 win, the Club is now off to Wembley for the FA Cup semi final and plans are underway for the flag to go with them.

Hampshire Flag’s team of 21 produces hand-sewn national and international flags and digitally printed

banners. The Waterlooville firm also offers a bespoke flag design service, PVC banners, marine flags, bunting, table flags, exhibition graphics and event systems in addition to the supply and installation an extensive range of flagpoles.

Its prestigious portfolio of clients includes Selfridges, the BBC, Channel 4, Portsmouth Football Club, IBM and British Airways. The proof is in the Printing Sales of medium and large format inkjet printers boomed at this year’s Focus on Imaging Photographic Expo at the NEC in February, Martin Christie is not surprised…

a PrESS rElEaSE from DCP Systems caught my eye as they

had evidently taken twice the amount of orders for large format printers than last year, taking nearly 50 orders for photographic printers from Epson and HP, ranging from the A3 professional desktop, right up to the brand new 42” HP Latex Designjet L25500 printer.

“It’s a sign of the times”, stated managing director, Darren Walker. “And the signs are all pointing to a good year for professional photographers. Most who purchased printers from us at the show are aware that they need to understand the whole process of digital photography — from capture to output and are now diversifying their operations to include printing wide format onto canvas, fabric and much more. The technology is such now that whatever you can imagine in print, there will be a way of realising it. ”

He must have been reading my column, or at least reading my mind. As I’ve pointed out several times, understanding digital output is important when capturing digital image input, just as at least some experience of the darkroom was invaluable to traditional photographers handling film.

As a photographer who went digital, being intimately involved with print has greatly helped the painful process of adjusting to images that exist only electronically and not in the real world, and provided a deep understanding of all the many things that can go wrong.

Working with film pretty well the only thing that could go wrong in camera would be setting the wrong exposure — apart from leaving the lens cap on obviously. In processing you could cover yourself from any chemical errors by developing in separate batches, and with only 36 pictures on a roll — or only twelve with medium format — only a small number of images, however valuable, would be at risk.

Nowadays, with massive storage space on memory cards, a thousand images can be rendered next to useless at the press of a button, or zapped into oblivion. And that’s assuming the pictures were taken with the correct combination of file size, white balance, speed rating, noise, tone, focus and all the rest. The current digital photographer has to get abreast of all these features, and not just simply press

a button. That’s why I never expected

photographers to be a major source of customer for copy shops. It’s the general public who used to get a film processed only several times a year who need the service more. They can now shoot and store a load more images, but they don’t want to know all the technical bit that goes with it.

That doesn’t mean that photographers are lost as custom to printers offering high quality printing, in one way it will help. Most of the purchases at Focus on Imaging would have been for desktop type A3 or compact A2 printers. Not many photographers will have space for a 42 inch latex printer in the back bedroom even if they could afford to feed it.

If they need to print bigger than a desktop they will still need the services of the specialist, and better still, the experience of doing their own printing will help them prepare files that are suitable as well as tune their expectations of the possible. I shall look forward with interest, and at least a

little sympathy, to postings for help on internet photography forums from the new owners of all these printers.

I very rarely offer advice, not because of being unhelpful, but because whenever I do I often find I am shot down for being completely wrong by someone who obviously knows so much more than me, it’s a wonder they haven’t been head hunted by Canon or HP before now.

I am prepared to be open minded on digital in that as it is all still very new, nobody can possibly know everything, and even with the vast resources available through search engines, there have got to be fresh puzzles still to be solved.

One such came in from a local amateur photographer, keen to do more portraiture, and experimenting with lighting, backgrounds as well as colour correction and image manipulation on the screen. Shooting RAW, unprocessed files he had imported direct from camera into Adobe Lightroom, done the first edit then exported a Jpeg, and finished the image to his satisfaction in

Photoshop. Looked fine on the screen, plenty of

healthy skin tones and a pleasing hue. Trouble was when he sent them off to a reputable mini lab for prints they came back very dark, and the colours drained almost as if they have been desaturated.

Bad enough on the prints, but only a few pounds lost there. Unfortunately he’s also sent one off to one of the internet-based canvas printers and it was too late to recall the order. Without taking a close inspection of the files, the first suspect is a poorly calibrated monitor — a common problem now whether a customer is bringing an image from a home PC or a well-travelled laptop. It’s like walking into someone else’s TV room and your eyes are hurting with the colour: they have got used to it and their brains are telling them that’s the colour it should be!

It’s not the calibration though, although when he brings it in, like most new laptops it’s a bit bright and contrasty. Popping the image onto my calibrated screen makes a little difference, but not as much as the prints would suggest.

DIGITAL IMAGING

And as he has been smart enough to save the original image — something Lightroom will do automatically by default — I can see he hasn’t done anything drastic to the hue and saturation to cause the discoloured effect. Something odd is happening between computer and printer.

The size and resolution seem ok but some information is missing somewhere in the file which isn’t immediately obvious to the eye or the listed data.

We happen to have a little Mitsubishi Easy Photo on test, one of those counter displays designed for self-service producing six by four dye sublimation prints. These machines do produce a pretty accurate print from an image file, faithful to original. When the image is displayed on this for a moment it appears fine, but in a split second the print preview changes to reveal the same effect as the prints. This gives me a clue that the colour information displayed on the screen may be fine but there is a shortage of necessary data for print. The original camera file is ok so the fault has to be in the export to print.

Lightroom saves the previous settings so it is easy to check when the programme opens, and there is the smoking gun — hidden in one of several file saving options. Although dimensions and resolution are fine, the slider setting Jpeg quality is set to zero. When you save a file in Photoshop this slider option — from zero to twelve — pops up before you save it to prompt you. As he had exported it as zero from Lightroom the damage had already been done so regardless of how he saved it from Photoshop, the colour information had been lost.

I stand to be corrected by any boffins who may know more but on the Sherlock Holmes principle of eliminating the impossible so that anything that remains however improbable must be the truth, it seems to be the most likely culprit. Needless to say the photographer will check all of his settings next time !

oFFSEtIng qualItY agaInSt PrIcE agaInSt rEPutatIonIncidentally I also spotted on DCP’s recent press release that they were holding their special prices on Epson and other specialist paper — rather ominously — until the end of March. It was one of those unfortunate coincidences that as I prepared to compose a piece on the price and performance of comparative papers, that dire warnings of yet more price increases hit the screen. Between earthquakes in Chile, strikes in Finland and the humble efforts of our own Chancellor of the Exchequer, things are looking grim. A shortfall in supply crashes headlong into an unprecedented increase in demand. Even without the growth of the emerging industrial giants in Asia, the regular rumble of delivery lorries to the home based copy shop tells its own story of increased consumption. Price increases in raw material are common in any industry, but in many are simply passed on to the customer with an unquestioned logic. Print, however, suffers from the perception that as it has become cheaper and faster, that equation should continue unabated.

Because so much of print is by its nature temporary and disposable, it is hard to escape this relationship. Only in the area of quality and longevity is there probably some chance of changing the odds, but it still needs careful judgement to balance

costs with possible profits. Quite early on, working with medium and large format digital imaging on ink jet printers, I realised that competing with cut-price operations advertising on the Internet, or volume printers on industrial sites, was not the way to go.

The most important att ribute of the walk-in counter of the traditional copy shop is that very contact with the customer, so that you can gauge what is wanted alongside what the cost is likely to be. Face to face with a potential client you have a chance to promote your worth and expertise, as well as present the options available. If they still prefer to go for a discount rate elsewhere then so be it, at least you have an opportunity to state your case. Oft en you may be able to translate what the customer is asking for into what they really want, can aff ord, or can be produced in the time allowed — three issues not always compatible. As always, with the immediacy of print on demand, there is always a temptation to negotiate, trading one with another, but it is important not to undermine the actual value of the product. Cutt ing corners to save costs can not only be short sighted but potentially disastrous in the longer term as a printer’s reputation goes a long way and negative feedback even further.

Last month I chronicled the pros and cons of working with artists, designers and photographers — the kind of customers who expect high quality reproduction should be prepared to come to terms with the consequent costs. They are three quite distinctive groups. In general artists, who work with actual physical items, will not be massively computer literate and may need to be taken gently in hand through the mysteries of the digital world. Designers may work on computers every day, but may not know anything about printing other than where to buy the inks for their desktop printer as mentioned above, even photographers may know a lot about the input of digital images, but very little about the possibilities and pitfalls of the output. The one thing they will have in common is an expectation of quality and consistency.

That is where shopping around for the best deals on consumables has its downside. A cheaper alternative might be more immediately profitable, but if it lacks the previous quality and consistency it will be at a longer term cost in abandoned test pieces and rejected work. Wastage, whether caused by operator error, printer problems or customer dissatisfaction, is a major issue in inkjet printing as the waste, by its very nature, is likely to be large.

It is, however, in the present economic climate, good policy to be looking for the best deals available on best quality media, although the variety of products is quite daunting, and it is important to know if you are comparing like with like. Art paper and canvas that has textured surface can vary tremendously not only on price but most importantly on the quality of image reproduced.

I’ll attempt to throw a little light on the market with products tried and tested next month when we have a clearer perspective on 2010 prices.

rEnz were proud to see Jon Tolley Managing Director - Prime Group, win the highly coveted prize for the “free standing calendar award” at the recent annual National Business Calendar Awards.

Prime Group were set the task by DHL, one of their customers, to produce a 100% biodegradable tent calendar; which could be individually personalised and printed in six different languages. Renz, now a manufacturer of this new

100% biodegradable wire were happy to be able to support Prime Group in such an innovative and exciting project. What makes this ring-wire so special is the colour filament on the wire, which is made from corn oil instead of the common nylon coating allowing the wire to be recycled or biodegrade naturally.

This is the first time that Renz have won an award for their 100% biodegradable wire and would like to thank Prime Group for their ongoing trust in Renz to deliver quality and innovative products.

gEF, or Grafityp Ecological Film, is a film that presents the qualities of a polymeric film as well as some of a cast film, and at the same time is offered at the price of a ‘better’ monomeric film.

The GEF film is made of several layers that can be adjusted separately, and does NOT contain any chlorine or plasticisers. This means that NO harmful gases are released when the material is burned after recycling, a truly important step in the ecological sphere. With its magnificent gloss, user friendliness (easy cutting and peeling), linked to an extremely high flexibility, this new GEF film is an enormous leap in the evolution of high quality self adhesive films with an extra ecological character.

Even though GEF, a product from the polyolefine group, cannot be compared to a PVC film as far as its composition is concerned, it looks the same, feels similar and can be applied in exactly the same way. A good opacity is guaranteed by colouring the bottom layer of the multilayered GEF. The shrinkage of the GEF is also considerably lower than that of a standard calendered film. The unique production process of the GEF film makes it perfectly comparable to classic high quality PVC films.

GEF films can be positioned somewhere between monomeric and polymeric calendered films. In-depth tests have proved that the GEF films offer a number of advantages, and that many of their characteristics can easily be compared with those

of a polymeric calendered film, as well as some of cast films, and for a considerably lower price which lies within the range of the ‘better’ monomeric calendered film.

UV-tests have shown that a life span of about four to five years may be presumed in Central-European conditions and if applied vertically.

Self adhesive sign films were introduced to the market more than half a century ago. From the very beginning PVC films strongly appealed to the industry. Even though these films have undergone quite a metamorphosis over preceding decades, they are still unrelentingly damaging to the environment. After all, when using cutting vinyls 50% of the used material after peeling logos and texts immediately turns into waste that is extremely hard to recycle, because of the adhesive layer on the vinyl. The only way to get

rid of this waste efficiently is to burn it. The main disadvantage of this process is that harmful gasses are released as a result of the plasticisers and the chlorine in the material. Grafityp headquarters in Belgium, renowned as a pioneer for ecological solutions in this area, began researching a suitable alternative, which led to the GEF.

In-depth research and the use of specialist know how are the basis of the new GEF film. A long period of extensive investigation, studies, tests and product improvements preceded the eventual production. In the specially equipped laboratory, all raw materials and developments were submitted to severe controls, and the films were subjected to tough tests. Grafityp have installed and developed a completely new cast extruding machine in a brand new production unit, making the production of the GEF film possible. The eventual result of this intense preparation is a highly technological, user and environmentally friendly film with an excellent price/quality ratio. Grafityp’s ISO-9001 quality label offers the best guarantee for a complete and consistent quality control.

Grafityp are continually striving to produce innovative products and offer unequalled customer friendly service, linked to an intensive innovative policy with regard to the environment. Grafityp UK Ltd 01827 300500, E-mail: [email protected] www.grafityp.co.uk

A new 300gsm grade will become available from May 2010, and will be offered in sizes A4, A3 & SRA3.

PRO-DESIGN’s™ improvements as part of the major product re-launch also include new packaging features, encompassing a recyclable paper wrap that will display the grade’s environmental credentials and further endorses its high environmental performance. The product packaging now carries the PEFC logo, EU Ecolabel, along with details of International Paper’s Saillat mill in France. The Saillat mill is one of the best in the world in terms of CO² emissions, with just 122kg per ton as declared in the Paper Profi le.

The Saillat mill has achieved a 78% reduction in CO² emissions since 1990, (which is better than both the CEPI reduction requirement of 27% and also the Kyoto Protocol guidelines of 8%).

The high environmental credentials of the Saillat mill put the production facility amongst the best in terms of environmental reliability. The mill was also among the first in Europe to achieve PEFC Chain of Custody certification in 2003, with its wood supply coming from local sustainably managed forest sources within a 120km transportation distance.

PRO-DESIGN™ is International Paper’s colour laser range for professional laser printing, used by graphic reproduction houses, digital printers and copy centres. Its significant features include improved high whiteness 168 CIE quality; this provides sharper contrasts for excellent reproduction, whilst other

features include better sheet formation, smooth surface, optimal stiffness for jam-free run ability and ISO 9706 providing an anti-ageing guarantee.

The “Pure by Nature” slogan endorses PRO-DESIGN’s™ immaculate whiteness and high environmental credentials. Since the whiteness enhancement, International Paper has recorded a double-digit growth in sales.

PRO-DESIGN’s™ outstanding environmental credentials, such as its environmentally friendly

manufacturing process and accreditations to both PEFC and EU Ecolabel certifications, provide an environmental guarantee and endorsement of the products high sustainable standards.

The merchant stockists in the UK for PRO-DESIGN™ are; Premier Beswick, PaperCo, Polycopy (Loughborough), HOS Paper Merchants (Leeds) and Springfield Business Papers (Bristol). For more information on International Paper and its product ranges visit www.internationalpaper.com

EFI has announced that their VUTEk QS Series r Ink has been approved by the Nordic Ecolabelling Board, and print companies may now refer to the approved ink when documenting their application for a Nordic Ecolabelling license. In order to achieve Nordic Ecolabelling status, printing companies agree to follow a certain criteria set, which includes the use of approved media and ink including the VUTEk QS Series r Ink.

Established in 1989 by the Nordic Council of Ministers, the Nordic Ecolabel’s goal is a sustainable society through sustainable consumerism. Commonly known as the Swan logo, it is the official ecolabel of the Nordic countries, and it covers 66 product categories, including cleaning products, furniture, toys, hotels, restaurants and printing businesses. Over 200 printing companies throughout Sweden, Norway,

Iceland, Denmark and Finland are ecolabel-licensed, meaning they have shown that they and their entire supply chain meet a number of environmental requirements, which make them some of the least polluting businesses in the

printing industry. The voluntary approval process for inks consists of tests for environmentally

harmful substances, health hazards, problematic chemicals, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and heavy metals such as lead and mercury. The VUTEk QS

Series r Ink is one of the industry’s first inks to be approved for referencing within a print business’s application for a Nordic Ecolabelling license.

“The QS Series r Ink is a great example of the company’s long-held commitment to the environment,” says Scott Schinlever, vice president/general manager EFI Rastek and EFI Ink Business. “EFI wholeheartedly agrees with the Nordic Ecolabel’s goal of sustainable society through sustainable consumerism, and we’re proud to offer yet another eco-friendly product to our customers.”For more information about VUTEk inks, visit www.efi .com/products/production/superwide/vutek/inks/.

laSt month we asked whether you fancied opening a print take-away?

CSN are encouraging the nation’s print shops to take up the challenge to mix print with stationery by pioneering the way with our own two south coast shops, Colourfast and PrintHaven. We are exploring the most popular model printers to stock the fastest moving consumables... It’s all about being more of a services supplier to our new and existing customers and ticking more boxes on their ‘things to do list’.

Most of our 8 million, and growing, SOHO, Small Office Home Office, customer base already dabble with print ‘in-house’. Step forward the print professional; OK we do help with a quick and efficient fix, on-demand print is our business and we excel in our service. While the customer waits we print with the best quality results on a matching media and save the day,

hooray! What better time to give advice on your customers print at home?

The home brew customer does need to step out for supplies though and we can help in two ways;

Print larger print runs and larger print formats, supply professional print advice on our print at home range of manufacturer matching inks and toners, plus the best paper for the job, split a ream or sell single sheets to discover amazing GP opportunities. Big stationers, with supermarket style parking etc sell blister packs of decanted reams for fortunes and they have all started to print as well. We need your help to keep print in the high street. If we have to sell the top 100 stationery lines to satisfy our customers one stop shop demands, so be it.

We are pleased to be researching this huge opportunity for many of our 6600 print shops with our friends at JET TEC, watch this space. To get involved please register your interest with [email protected]

thE idea here is to promote the trade banner services available to you at www.hampshireflag.eu

Where you supply your customer images to promote outdoor events or to promote indoor events, outdoors!

This sample is available though, for you to sell on to your local ice cream vendors who want to stop passers by, to buy one, ice cream that is.

We have purchased the rights to this image for you all to enjoy. As a fresh and contemporary addition to the flag family, Tear Drop Flags offer elegance, durability and a unique way of displaying your business or event.

Hampshire Flag’s Tear Drop Flag System not only provides the complete package but is also one of the most competitively priced systems on the market today. Supplied with a transport bag, the Tear Drop Flag System is compact and the kits contain all you need to see your flag flying high in a matter of minutes.

The System comprises a strong aluminium sectioned pole, a high quality water-based digitally dye printed Tear Drop flag, a rotator and a Vario drill system to fix the system into soft ground. And because size does matter, at Hampshire Flag we offer you three different Tear Drop flag options – either 2m, 3m or 4m sizes.

Whatever the logo or image featured on the flag, you can be sure of exceptional print quality. Each flag is water-base dye printed in-house to the highest standard resulting in excellent colour matching and deep, rich colour contrasts.

Every element is taken care of, which is why each flag is machine finished with a black heading to cover the pole. Other colour options are available on request. Understanding that flexibility is important, they offer the system with or without the Tear Drop Flag and available as 2 m, 3m or 4m kits.

This innovative flag can be used indoors or out and they also offer an X-base with water pouch for use on hard standings and a car wheel-base for external surfaces such as forecourts or outdoor shows.

Tear Drop Flags – eye-catching, contemporary and highly visual Key features:

• Aluminium-sectioned construction pole with a glass fibre flexible rod at the top • Bespoke design dye printed onto knitted polyester tear drop flag • Vario drill with rotator that screws into the ground to secure the pole • Transport bag to house assembly kit and flag 0845 644 3129 www.hampshirefl ag.eu • CSN has negotiated a group rate for this thirst quenching new business opportunity, and at just the right time of year to promote a new banner service. We have asked Graham Wilkinson to sign off a CSN readers offer for our 6600 print shops, maybe the sample at the ten rate of £95?…and the man from Pompey, he says yes!

As ‘Readers Scribes’ is your own place to enjoy our unique frontline printers humour, we do listen to your requests and may from time to time open up this two page spread with your other ideas to share with your fellow quick print professionals.

We are currently collating a copy shop cooking book. When published, we will all have access to personalise and print for our customers, as a colourful sample of our latest print and bindery services.

This will carry our marketing messaging to places where other media cannot reach. Anticipated shelf life will out live most printed fl yers and samples even if it ends up in our customers kitchens.

While we try out your favourite colour themed recipes, bookmaking trials will be investigated in the CSN beta test centre. salt and pepperMethod1. Put a large pan of water on to boil

with a litt le salt.2. Trim the outer leaves and woody

stalks from the broccoli, you will lose at least half the vegetables by this process. Wash the good bits and chop into 1cm/½in sections. Cut the chilli in half lengthways and scrape out the seeds and the att ached pith.

Chop the chilli fl esh, the garlic and the anchovies fi nely. In another large pan warm 4tbsp/60ml/2fl oz of olive oil over a medium fl ame and add the chilli, garlic and anchovies. Sweat these for a minute or so and add the broccoli, season with a litt le salt and pepper, then continue to cook gently whilst the pasta boils.

3. Drop the pasta in the boiling water and stir immediately. Cook until just tender with a litt le bit of resistance to the bite (al dente). This could take anything between 7 and 12 minutes depending on the type of pasta you choose (orecchiett e is the slowest and incidentally the absolutely authentic type for this dish).

4. Grate 4tbsp of the cheese and reserve. Aft er the pasta has been cooking for 5 minutes transfer a small ladle of the cooking water to the broccoli. Keeping over a high heat, add another 2 tbsp/30ml/1fl oz of oil and add the cheese. Toss and serve immediately.

Job IntErvIEw QuEstIonYou are driving along in your car on a wild, stormy night. You pass by a bus stop, and you see three people waiting for the bus: 1. An old lady who looks as if she is

about to die. 2. An old friend who once saved your

life. 3. The perfect man (or) woman you have

been dreaming about. Which one would you choose to offer a

ride to, knowing that there could only be one passenger in your car?

Think before you continue reading. This is a moral/ethical dilemma that was once actually used as part of a job application.

You could pick up the old lady, because she is going to die, and thus you should save her first; or you could take the old friend because he once saved your life, and this would be the perfect chance to pay him back. However, you may never be able to find your perfect dream lover again.

The candidate who was hired (out of 200 applicants) had no trouble coming up with his answer.

He simply answered: “I would give the car keys to my old friend, and let him take the lady to the hospital. I would stay behind and wait for the bus with the woman of my dreams.”

Never forget to “Think Outside of the Box.”

It breeds familiarity and that leads to a breakdown in authority,” he said. “I refer to my employees by their last name only - Smith, Jones, Baker - that’s all. Now that we got that straight, what is your last name?” The new guy sighed and said, “Darling. My name is John Darling.” The manager said, “Okay, John, the next thing I want to tell you...”
